Dynamic Control Of Scan Signals In Amoled Displays To Reduce Power Consumption, Sangmoo Choi, Sang Young Youn
Defensive Publications Series
This publication describes systems and techniques to dynamically control the scan signals of an active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) display in portable electronic devices. Displays in portable electronic devices, such as smartphones, include tens of thousands of pixels. Scan signals in the display control the brightness and color of individual pixels. A leading source of power consumption in AMOLED displays, however, is the parasitic capacitance in the scan lines that carry the scan signals. As the frame rate of AMOLED displays has increased, the frequency of scan signals and the associated parasitic capacitance has also increased. This publication discloses a …

Multibox Human Detection For Images Of Crowded Scenes, Anonymous
Multibox Human Detection For Images Of Crowded Scenes, Anonymous
Defensive Publications Series
Images of crowded scenes typically have been challenging for human-detection and pose-estimation algorithms. Top-down approaches suffer from reliance on non-maximum suppression (NMS) algorithms, which often remove valid detections, while bottom-up approaches inconsistently associate body parts of different people into the same detection. This disclosure presents techniques that combine elements of both top-down and bottom-up approaches, by leveraging the observation that head-boxes overlap less with each other as compared to body-boxes. NMS algorithms are applied to head-boxes instead of body-boxes. Head boxes are detected jointly, and are matched to the corresponding body-boxes. The techniques improve detection and pose estimation results for …

Standardized Flow-Control Signals To Support Chaining Of Identity Providers, Guibin Kong, Steven Soneff
Standardized Flow-Control Signals To Support Chaining Of Identity Providers, Guibin Kong, Steven Soneff
Defensive Publications Series
Many online services, such as websites or apps, facilitate user sign-up or sign-in via different identity providers (IDPs). When a service permits the use of multiple IDPs, displaying the UIs of all of these at the same time is not suitable from a user experience point of view. In such cases, each of the available IDP options needs to be shown one by one. However, owing to various issues regarding how libraries and/or Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) of different IDPs handle the authentication action flow, it is difficult for online services to integrate with multiple IDPs in such a chained …

China Utility Model Patent Trash Or Treasure - A Data-Based Analysis, Patent Liu
China Utility Model Patent Trash Or Treasure - A Data-Based Analysis, Patent Liu
Defensive Publications Series
The Chinese Utility Model Patent (CUMP) has existed since the implementation of China’s Patent Law in 1985. Previous studies on the CUMP focus on the patentability standards (subject matter, novelty, and non-obviousness), and the nature of the system itself. Data-based empirical studies are not often seen. This paper fills this gap by analyzing the CUMP from the data perspectives of citation, litigation, and finance. Derived conclusions show the growing importance of the CUMP, and its high value, as a treasure to CUMP holders, contrary to the traditional misconception that the CUMP is trash.

Techniques For Wide-Angle Distortion Correction Using An Ellipsoidal Projection, Yichang Shih, Chia-Kai Liang, Peng-Ho Lau
Techniques For Wide-Angle Distortion Correction Using An Ellipsoidal Projection, Yichang Shih, Chia-Kai Liang, Peng-Ho Lau
Defensive Publications Series
This publication describes techniques of using an ellipsoidal projection for correcting image distortion caused by wide-angle cameras. Two-dimensional (2D) cartesian pixel coordinates of an image taken with a wide-angle camera are first back-projected to three-dimensional (3D) spherical pixel coordinates (e.g., onto a surface of a 3D sphere) using a focal length of the camera. The 3D spherical pixel coordinates are then projected to 3D ellipsoidal pixel coordinates (e.g., onto a surface of a 3D ellipsoid). Major and minor axes of the 3D ellipsoidal pixel coordinates are defined according to a determined face orientation within the image. …

Generative Adversarial Networks (Gans) For Simulating Human Behaviors During Bone Registration To Improve Registration Algorithms, Think Surgical, Inc.
Defensive Publications Series
Computer-assisted orthopedic surgical procedures routinely require the registration of a bone to preoperative surgical planning data. The registration procedure requires the collection of points on the bone that are then matched to points or surfaces on a 3-D bone model. To improve the registration algorithms, simulations of the real-world registration processer are performed to test the changes to the algorithms. The present publication proposes the use of generative adversarial networks (GANs) to generate registration simulation data that closely matches that of real-world experimental/actual data.
