In cloud computing, sole tenant nodes dedicate hardware to a single customer, enabling the customer to tightly optimize utilization and performance to match their load profile. However, with sole tenancy, the burdens of capacity management, risk management, task scheduling, triggering live-migration, etc., fall on the customer. This disclosure describes techniques to enable customers to run their workloads in standard, multitenant cloud computing environments while still being able to customize the experience to levels comparable to those offered via dedicated hardware or sole tenant hosts. The high level of customization in a multitenant environment is enabled even as the customer uses …
Emergency Call Improvements In Areas With Marginal Wireless Coverage, Anonymous
Emergency Call Improvements In Areas With Marginal Wireless Coverage, Anonymous
Defensive Publications Series
In an emergency call, it is critical to provide accurate location and identity from the user equipment (UE) to the emergency service. However, the identity of the user equipment (UE) is known to the emergency service only when the UE is registered with the network. UE registration can be unreliable or unsuccessful in regions of marginal wireless coverage. This disclosure describes techniques to enable a UE, e.g., a smartphone or other mobile device, to attempt registration on a public land-mobile network (PLMN) for emergency calls in areas with marginal wireless coverage. If previous registration failure is traced to poor wireless …

Improving Speed And Reliability Of Database Queries, Ed Gogel
Improving Speed And Reliability Of Database Queries, Ed Gogel
Defensive Publications Series
Low latency databases with high query volumes and large numbers of connections often have multiple redundant communication paths from clients to database servers. When queries fail, clients that submit queries have difficulty identifying the source of query failures and are unable to take actions to ensure high performance and service availability. This disclosure describes database techniques to tune performance and identify reasons for failed queries. A metadata layer within the database is used by the database server to provide anticipated time-to-serve based on the current server load and the complexity of the query. Clients can use the time-to-serve data to …

Clustering-Based Display Calibration, Farnaz Agahian, Xiaoping Bai
Defensive Publications Series
This publication describes techniques for clustering-based display calibration. In aspects, a calibration manager groups displays in a manufacturing line into clusters based on similarities of the displays’ color and white point properties. The clusters can be any quantity of displays and include a “seed” display. The calibration manager generates a calibration profile for the seed display of each cluster. The calibration manager may use an industry standard, such as ΔE00 (Delta E 2000), to determine similarity between displays’ color properties and populate the clusters. Once a cluster is populated with similar displays, the calibration manager applies the calibration profile generated …

Self-Organizing Publish/Subscribe On The Network Edge, Phil Genera
Self-Organizing Publish/Subscribe On The Network Edge, Phil Genera
Defensive Publications Series
In a publish/subscribe protocol such as MQTT, Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices communicate as follows. A device with a message pertaining to a certain topic publishes the message to a cloud-based server. A device that subscribes to the topic receives messages pertaining to the topic from the cloud-based server. The traditional publish/subscribe protocol fails if the internet is unavailable. This disclosure describes techniques for publish/subscribe messaging without the need for a central coordinating server. A subscriber translates the topic of interest to a multicast IP address. To publish a message, the publisher simply sends a UDP packet with the message content to …
Dynamic Real-Time Verification Of Program Call Flows, Nic Watson, Chris Schneider
Dynamic Real-Time Verification Of Program Call Flows, Nic Watson, Chris Schneider
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure describes a dynamic overlay that delineates control flows of an application to identify unexpected code execution pathways that may be indicative of a security breach. Identifying such unexpected (or unauthorized) execution pathways can enable their prevention. The overlay is generated by observing the control flow through the application to produce a histogram of probabilities from a first function call to subsequent function calls. Using the overlay enables the detection of attacks with higher fidelity and at a lower cost than existing approaches.
Enhancing Cryptographic Security By Partial Key Management, Omer Berkman, Marcel M. Moti Yung
Enhancing Cryptographic Security By Partial Key Management, Omer Berkman, Marcel M. Moti Yung
Defensive Publications Series
Cryptographic security can degrade over time due to attackers using more powerful hardware or more sophisticated software. To maintain security, cryptographic machinery is replaced or strengthened as and when weaknesses are found. However, updating certain cryptographic components is infeasible or expensive, resulting in updates that either don’t occur or are delayed. This disclosure describes techniques to enhance cryptographic security by updating portions of a cryptographic system when updating cryptographic parameters is only partially possible. Authenticating data (auth-data) sent by the un-updateable component during normal operation is used to deliver new and upgraded security parameters to secure communication. Security degradation resulting …
