Enhancing Depth Estimation By Leveraging Foldable Device Cameras, Avichal Rakesh, Patrick Shehane Dec 2025

Enhancing Depth Estimation By Leveraging Foldable Device Cameras, Avichal Rakesh, Patrick Shehane

Defensive Publications Series

This document describes techniques to enhance depth estimation accuracy using foldable device cameras. Modern smartphones use multiple cameras for depth estimation via stereo vision, which relies on the distance between cameras. Conventional, bar-shaped smartphones have a relatively small distance between cameras, leading to lower depth accuracy for distant objects. Foldable devices, when unfolded (open), allow for a much larger distance between the rear camera and the outward-facing selfie camera. This greater separation is leveraged for accurate depth estimation through triangulation, substantially reducing estimation error. The described techniques are applicable to devices with various foldable form factors.

User-Customized Application Settings Using Customized Application Environments, Alexander Haubold, Clément Julliard Dec 2025

User-Customized Application Settings Using Customized Application Environments, Alexander Haubold, Clément Julliard

Defensive Publications Series

Software applications on user devices can be launched only in their default state or in a single user-configured state. This requires users to change the application state for individual use cases each time they launch an application. For example, a camera application may have multiple modes such as default, portrait, panorama, video, etc. and the user needs to switch from the default mode to other modes before using the application. This disclosure describes application containerization techniques that enable users to launch an application in any of a set of custom initial states associated with separate custom-labeled icons. Users can thus …

Satellite Service Provisioning Via Premium Pass Purchase, Thomas Nguyen, Sooraj Sasindran Dec 2025

Temporary satellite data is provided for completing payment during on-demand purchase. The service is suspended if the pass limits are exceeded …

Context-Aware Standby State And Context-Aware Boot With Low-Cost Hardware, Subrata Banik, Noga Smith Dec 2025

Context-Aware Standby State And Context-Aware Boot With Low-Cost Hardware, Subrata Banik, Noga Smith

Defensive Publications Series

Avoiding latency in booting or waking a device requires keeping it on and connected at all times, resulting in poor battery life, frequent recharging, limited mobility because of the need for a connection, and higher costs. Sensor-based functionality for automatically triggering device start or wake by sensing human presence requires expensive sensors, does not identify specific users, generates many false positives, and lacks uniformity across devices. This disclosure describes implementation of a context-aware standby state and context-aware boot process with low-cost hardware integrated within a device. A device in the shutdown or suspended state can be switched to the context-aware …

Motion Gesture And Near-Field Communication Field Detection For Initiating Wearable Payments, Malcolm Kemeny, Sergio Alves, Michael Angermann, Andrew Chen, Annie Tran, Brian Julian

Defensive Publications Series

Some methods for making payments with a wearable computing device, such as a smart watch, can involve manual steps like waking the device and opening a payment application, which may introduce latency into the transaction process. The disclosed technology provides an approach for initiating payments by using sensor data to detect an indication of a user's intent to pay. For example, a system can analyze data from a sensor, such as an accelerometer, to detect a predefined motion gesture. The detection of this gesture, in combination with the contemporaneous presence of a near-field communication (NFC) field from a payment terminal, …

Logic-Based Dynamic Resource Determination For Retrieval-Augmented Generation, Iain Foulds Dec 2025

Logic-Based Dynamic Resource Determination For Retrieval-Augmented Generation, Iain Foulds

Defensive Publications Series

Some retrieval-augmented generation systems can be limited by a reliance on static, predefined resource lists, which may become outdated, or by computationally expensive and potentially non-deterministic search queries. The disclosed technology describes a logic-based method for the dynamic determination and retrieval of supplemental information sources. A system, such as a client computing device or server, can parse an input to extract contextual identifiers and apply a configurable set of rules, patterns, and heuristics to infer the location of relevant resources. These resources may then be fetched to augment a large language model or other generative model. This approach can provide …

System For Data Extraction Via Consensus Of Extractors Vetted By Ground Truth, Jordan Janeiro, Sergey Novikov

Defensive Publications Series

Automated data extraction from diverse web resources may result in inaccuracies, as single-method systems can struggle with varied implementation patterns, such as client-side rendering. This paper describes systems and methods that utilize a trustability-based framework to address these potential inaccuracies. This framework can employ a set of diverse extractors, for example, code-based, image-based, and machine learning-based modules, that may operate concurrently. The performance of these extractors can be evaluated against a ground-truth dataset, which may be generated by human reviewers from a sample of web pages for a given domain. The extractors that meet a pre-defined accuracy threshold can be …

A Content-Centric Discussion Platform, Nikolas Ojala Dec 2025

A Content-Centric Discussion Platform, Nikolas Ojala

Defensive Publications Series

Traditional linear, time-ordered discussion threads cause three deeply interconnected structural problems in online forums:

  1. sedimentation of valuable content (both inside threads and across the forum),
  2. thread hijacking / topic drift, and
  3. structural harassment through off-topic flooding.

These problems are not primarily caused by malicious users but are inevitable by-products of forcing all discussion into a single chronological pipe.

This article fully discloses a complete architectural solution: a content- centric, modular discussion platform (the “content-pool model”) in which every contribution is an independent, semantically linked unit equipped with structured metadata fields. By completely removing the linear thread and replacing it with …

The present disclosure is directed to a protocol-agnostic fast-failover mechanism for IPv4 and IPv6 networks designed to address the inherent lack of rapid reconvergence. The present disclosure may enhance network resilience by pre-calculating and pre-installing a backup, or backup route, into a router's forwarding information base (FIB) alongside a primary route. In the event of a primary route failure, a router can be configured to switch traffic to the backup route almost instantaneously, thereby bypassing the conventional, time-consuming process of route recalculation and installation. This approach can significantly minimize packet loss and service disruption.
