Targeting Brand Advertisements In Content Feed, Ruxandra Davies, Justin Lewis
Targeting Brand Advertisements In Content Feed, Ruxandra Davies, Justin Lewis
Defensive Publications Series
A brand advertisement system targets brand advertisements in a content feed. The brand advertisement system identifies a media item in the content feed. If the system detects a brand mark in the media item, the system identifies an advertisement associated with the detected brand mark. The system can modify the ranking of the media item and present the media item based on the modified ranking in the content feed. Further, the system places the advertisement adjacent to the media item in the content feed.
Smart Data Saver Based On Predicted Information Needs, Matthew Sharifi, Jakob Foerster
Smart Data Saver Based On Predicted Information Needs, Matthew Sharifi, Jakob Foerster
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure describes techniques to manage consumption of network bandwidth, e.g., by a mobile device. Dynamic classification of mobile device applications is performed based on permissions and levels of background data usable by an application. Background data requests from an application are selectively permitted or denied access to the network, based on device state such as content displayed on screen, text input state, application usage information, etc. Such selective permission or denial of network access results in savings in network bandwidth consumption while allowing the mobile device to access the network for important tasks, e.g., to receive updates.

Improved Security For Non-Volatile Main Memory, Stuart Haber, Pratyusa K Manadhata
Improved Security For Non-Volatile Main Memory, Stuart Haber, Pratyusa K Manadhata
Defensive Publications Series
A technique that improves security for non-volatile main memory in computer systems is disclosed. Some prior approaches that secure data between OS processes in such systems reduce the number of NVM write cycles by using encryption instead of "shredding" (zeroing out) physical memory pages between processes. However, in some circumstances, this solution can be less secure. The disclosed technique uses a pseudorandom function to change how the major counter is updated for a page that is to be shredded in order to increase security.

E-Sra Rescue Events For Sm Tickets, Tyagi Nishant
Defensive Publications Series
E-SRA Rescue is a passively monitoring events tool which comes into the existence when the ticketing is delayed in SM (Service Manager) Ticketing Tool. When an event is not handled in a timely way, RESCUE is ready to catch events and forward them to the Support teams. When the Service Manager is down then the events are pushed into the Rescue which is then pulled by E-SRA Rescue event portal to see those tickets which were not created when the Service manager was down.

For a server system, we would have many kinds of configurations for customer’s different application. Some configurations like 2.5” / 3.5” HDD or different length PSU might have different PCBA, cable, mechanical part and cable clip in the chassis. It will have the part’s maintenance and inventory cost on these parts for different configuration. So if we could use the same part at different configuration, it will reduce our cost. So we propose a new cable clip module with moveable cable clip to let the cable routing more flexible by moving the location of the cable clip. By using this …

Multi-View Watch-Together Viewport, Ruxandra Davies, Annie Tang, Justin Lewis
Defensive Publications Series
A system and method for simultaneously supporting watch-together experiences and content management on mobile devices is disclosed. Accordingly two multi-video viewports having independent playback/navigation controls and inverted audio controls are used. This system implements three key viewing experiences, one for watch-together viewing, and two others for independent viewing. The system avoids overlapping audio from simultaneously playing videos and to simultaneously control the playback in both the watch-together and the independent consumption viewports. This is achieved by inverted audio playback control in which one of the two video viewports is muted and the other is not. When the user taps on …

Browser Based Multi-Account Notifications, Justin Lewis, Joseph Cohen
Defensive Publications Series
A system and method are disclosed for accurately delivering notifications to devices with multiple users. The system uses a notification server and operates using cookies on the user device. When a user enables notifications, the device is registered with the server backend. Such info is then copied to the client device and stored in a cookie. At the time of notifying a particular user, the notification service will retrieve a list of devices registered to that user id. It then sends a notification fingerprint indicating the notification payload and intended account to the device. When the client device receives the …

A Scholarly Paper Index With Strong Truth-Seeking Incentives, Alexandros Salazar Cardozo
Defensive Publications Series
A system and method are disclosed to automatically estimate the quality of individual papers published by a scholar in a web search engine. The index of search engine consists of a graph model which has three main elements - papers, scholars and publications. Paper edges such as cites-presumes true, replicates, fails-to-replicate and meta-analyzes are the features where most of the power resides. This graph-dependent method provides truth-seeking incentives for scholars to obtain higher or lower rating for their published papers based on the information estimated from the paper edges. The credibility metrics are preserved and updated live, as they propagate …

Memory Enclaves With Software Configuration Information, Uday Savagaonkar
Memory Enclaves With Software Configuration Information, Uday Savagaonkar
Defensive Publications Series
Software guard extensions (SGX) allow an application to instantiate within memory a protected container, referred to as an enclave. An enclave is an area in the address space of an application that provides confidentiality and integrity even in presence of software of higher privilege, even if such software is malicious. The protection is achieved by restricting non-enclave accesses to code/data resident in the enclave, and by enforcing execution integrity for the enclave. An enclave has an identity, which comprises, for example, a hash of the code resident in the enclave, hash of a key with which the enclave was signed, …

3d Environment For Interacting And Viewing Photospheres, Joel Valli, Devin Mancuso
Defensive Publications Series
ABSTRACT
This disclosure presents a system and method for permitting users to interact with images as three-dimensional objects. In that regard, an aspect of the system and method relates to displaying a world space to a user based on a three-dimensional model. The world space includes a collection of spherical images upon which equirectangular images are projected. When a user selects a sphere for increased interaction, the size of the sphere increases until it appears as if the user is inside of the sphere. The user may then view and interact with a photosphere that corresponds with the equirectangular image …

Dominant Color Extraction And Theming, Alexander Kuscher, Jennifer Chen
Defensive Publications Series
A system and method for setting themes automatically on computing devices having backlit LED surfaces is disclosed. The system extracts the main or dominant color palette out of the wallpaper that the user sets and uses that palette to lightly customize system UI. The system thus automatically selects the theme to match the user's choice and applies this to various system interfaces such as menus, applications or other operating system screens. For devices with keyboards that have LED backlight and devices that have a touch keyboard, the method envisages use of multi-colored LEDs. The system would adjust colors of the …

Sensor Based Auditory And Haptic Guidance System, Brian Mulford, Ben Kwa, Jay Lieske, Wade Norris
Defensive Publications Series
A system and method are disclosed that use data provided by a mobile device equipped with sensors to guide a human or machine along a vector path through sensory feedback. The system uses motion and depth sensor information and object recognition to create models of an interior space, which facilitate movement for a person who has never been inside a space before, and to use those models for navigation. The method utilizes interior space maps to identify "safe" vectors. A realtime algorithm compares the user’s location and direction of movement with the desired path in the model, providing a measure …

Content generators, such as video producers and advertisers, can provide their content to TV networks and other publishers for display. Automatically determining if the provided content appeared on a specific TV network can be difficult. Matching captured frames from the video streamed by the TV networks to frames from the provided content can result in a low match rate. The match rate can be low because the TV networks often apply various image transformations, such as scalings, croppings, color transformations, and overlays such as logos, tickers and other on-screen graphics that can obscure the content. When the transformations are applied, …
