System For Optimizing Buffering Of 360 Degree Video Streams, By Taking Current Viewing Angle Into Account And Buffering More Distant Viewing Angles At Separate Bandwidths, Anurag Agrawal, Thomas Price
Defensive Publications Series
360-degree video is divided into a plurality of fields of view from a playback device. For example, In the case of four fields of view, referred to as quadrants, the first quadrant is defined as the current field of view of the user, the second quadrant is to the user's right, the third quadrant is directly behind the user, and the fourth is to his left. During playback and buffering, a server decides what video quality (e.g., low/medium/high) to assign to each quadrant of the video based on available bandwidth and the likelihood of a viewer rotating the device to …
Automatic Determination Of Delays And Appointment Rescheduling, Jorim Jaggi, Yannick Stucki, Sandro Feuz, Adrian Roos
Automatic Determination Of Delays And Appointment Rescheduling, Jorim Jaggi, Yannick Stucki, Sandro Feuz, Adrian Roos
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure describes techniques to automatically predict that a user is likely to be delayed for an upcoming calendar appointment. A trained on-device machine learning model is used to predict delays based on permitted contextual information. Schedule rearrangements are automatically generated, e.g., to rearrange subsequent calendar meetings that are predicted to be affected due to the delay. Rearrangements are presented to the user, and the calendar is updated per user input and preferences. A calendar application or service that implements these techniques can reduce the burden on users to manually reschedule appointments.

Deep learning requires a large data set. When working with smaller data sets we need an automated approach for feature learning as a pre-processing step to create the training set for a shallow neural network with one hidden layer. The outcome of the neural net classifier is filtered using post-processing rules over a defined wait and quiet period to create an ensemble prediction with higher quality. This gives us the benefits of deep learning, but with a smaller data set.
A partial implementation of this methodology was used for a pilot release for prediction of Common Previsioning Group (CPG) growth …

A Fool Proof Carrier Design For Front Access Storage Expansion Board, Jui Lin Chen, Chia-Yuan Liu
Defensive Publications Series
Storage applications, by their very nature, need an expansion hardware to consolidate more hard drives to a controller. Typically the expansion hardware is designed as an independent printed circuit board and connect to the hard drive backplane in the opposite side of hard drives. When the system is installed in the rack, it requires users to move the whole system box from the position in order to open the lid. It also requires users to power off the system before disconnect the expansion board from the hard drive backplane.

Computer programs and applications are often designed such that sub-tasks of a program are executed by a separate process spawned by the main program or application. An advantage to such a design is resilience, e.g., even if one process fails, the remaining processes continue execution, even as the failed process is started anew. In the context of web browser applications, networking requests are typically not spawned as separate processes but rather handled by the main browser process itself. This can lead to problems of stability, security, and resilience. The techniques of this disclosure spawn the networking tasks of a web …

When applications have critical bugs that present security vulnerabilities or may result in serious failures with potential massive business level impact, these applications have to be updated as fast as possible to minimize the harm of the bug. However, mission-critical or other user-facing applications may maintain critical internal state that has to be serialized and restored during the update process introducing signi1cant cost and delay.
Instead of serializing the internal state we propose to implement applications in such a way that the application state is fully decoupled (e.g. in a different address space or shared memory segment) from the application …
