Distributed Trusted Update Approval, Nelson Araujo Jul 2016

Distributed Trusted Update Approval, Nelson Araujo

Defensive Publications Series

An automatic update system is described that enables a user to elect one or more security delegates that the automatic update system extracts opinions from, regarding software and firmware updates. The automatic update system may compare the opinion of security delegates with an update installation policy associated with each delegate. The automatic update system may use the delegate opinions when confronted with a decision to accept (e.g., download) and optionally install an update to determine whether to install or reject the update, despite whether the update is or is not received from a trusted source.

Selectively Delaying Location-Based Queries, Fredrik Bergenlid, Nils Grimsmo Jun 2016

Selectively Delaying Location-Based Queries, Fredrik Bergenlid, Nils Grimsmo

Defensive Publications Series

To prevent superfluous updating of the location of a mobile device, a search engine can implement a tool to determine if a query is location-based before requesting an updated user location. The tool can also determine a precision of the updated location required to return accurate search results. The tool helps retrieve accurate and quick results to location-based queries while preventing unnecessary updates of a user location for non-location-based queries, in turn saving battery life of the mobile device and bandwidth on the network.

System For Recommending Job Titles Based On User Provided Titles And Categories, Xuejun Tao, Hao Jiang, Roger Hernandez Jr, Mark Rivera, Christian Posse, Maria Helena Buhr, Sarah Lin

Defensive Publications Series

The present disclosure relates to a system and method of recommending job titles based on user-provided titles and categories. The system leverages an occupational ontology with multiple levels such as a job title, minor occupational category and major occupational category. The system receives job title or category as inputs from a user. It then classifies the job title or job category into one or more minor job categories. The system then uses a number of recommendation algorithms to generate several job titles. It then presents recommended job titles to the user in one final recommendation list. The user interface could …

Systems And Methods Of Managing Geofences, Levent Besik, Alessio Pace Apr 2016

Systems And Methods Of Managing Geofences, Levent Besik, Alessio Pace

Defensive Publications Series

This paper discusses systems and methods of dynamically prioritizing geofences on a server such that a device can only receive and setup relevant geofences in accordance with a maximum geofence limit of the device, application, or operating system. The system can then maintain those geofences as the device moves around. For example, a system (e.g., one or more processors executing on a server) receives several geofences. The system dynamically prioritizes the geofences based on one or more input signals, including, e.g., an advertisement bid amount made by a content provider or advertiser requesting a geofence around a location, popularity, mapping …

Name Normalization, Vladimir Yakunin, David Talbot Apr 2016

Name Normalization, Vladimir Yakunin, David Talbot

Defensive Publications Series

"This disclosure is directed generally to methods and apparatus for normalizing tokens found in text input prior to attempting to match those tokens to a database of names (e.g., a contact list). In various implementations, a set of suffix tuples, which may be optionally annotated, may be used to normalize tokens found in text obtained from, for instance, a user speaking into a microphone of a mobile phone or smart watch. For example, a suffix tuple, may indicate that the suffix “u” may be replaced by the suffix “a” to normalize a name, and that the resulting normalized name should be …

The search provider determines a price for the consumer to purchase each product, where at least part of the price is expressed in rewards points associated …

Automatic Detection Of User Language, Rachel Blum, Aurimas Liutikas, Alex Ainslie, Rachel Simpson Feb 2016

Automatic Detection Of User Language, Rachel Blum, Aurimas Liutikas, Alex Ainslie, Rachel Simpson

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes techniques to automatically detect a user’s proficiency in particular languages. Signals from user activity, such as search, browsing activity, location history, mobile usage, etc. are interpreted as indicators of the user’s likely language proficiency. Further, user preferences, such as language preferences, spell checking preferences, etc. are analyzed as indicators of the user’s language proficiency. Multiple signals are combined to determine languages in which the user is proficient. Detected proficiency is utilized to customize user experience, e.g., to automatically offer translation for content that is in a language in which the user is not proficient.

Using Machine Translation For Query Rewrite Generation, Massimiliano Ciaramita, Anton Andryeyev, Babak Behsaz, Srinivas Narayanan, Nitin Gupta, Neil Houlsby, Preyas Popat, Wei Wang

Defensive Publications Series

A query rewrite system can be used to improve query understanding of search engines by generating multiple reformulations of the same query using machine translation. The query rewrite system receives an initial query from a user. It then retrieves known related queries to the initial query from a database. Subsequently, the system generates variant queries from the query and the related queries by passing them through a monolingual machine translator. Thereafter, the system ranks the variant queries according to predefined parameters and transmits one or more of the ranked variant queries to a search engine for further processing.

Google Votes: A Liquid Democracy Experiment On A Corporate Social Network, Steve Hardt, Lia C. R. Lopes Jun 2015

Google Votes: A Liquid Democracy Experiment On A Corporate Social Network, Steve Hardt, Lia C. R. Lopes

Defensive Publications Series

This paper introduces Google Votes, an experiment in liquid democracy built on Google's internal corporate Google+ social network. Liquid democracy decision-making systems can scale to cover large groups by enabling voters to delegate their votes to other voters. This approach is in contrast to direct democracy systems where voters vote directly on issues, and representative democracy systems where voters elect representatives to vote on issues for them. Liquid democracy systems can provide many of the benefits of both direct and representative democracy systems with few of the weaknesses. Thus far, high implementation complexity and infrastructure costs have prevented widespread adoption. …

Pre-Fetching Batched Advertisements On Mobile Devices, Russell Quong, Steve Osborn May 2015

Pre-Fetching Batched Advertisements On Mobile Devices, Russell Quong, Steve Osborn

Defensive Publications Series

A mobile device may include an advertisement subsystem that can transmit ad requests to an advertisement network to receive batched advertisements to be stored in an ad cache. When an application executing on the mobile device requests an advertisement from the advertisement subsystem, the advertisement subsystem can select and serve the prefetched advertisement even if the mobile device is offline. Impression and/or performance data may be transmitted to the advertisement network once the mobile device is online. In some implementations, the advertisement subsystem can combine signal data from multiple applications having differing permissions to create a more comprehensive ad request. …
