System For Providing Push Media Notifications Meeting Search Criteria, Vincent Dureau, Jonathan Wald

Defensive Publications Series

A system and method are disclosed for providing push notifications on TV and movie content meeting set criteria based on categorical queries. The system considers queries recently issued by users, runs them offline, and identifies any new additions to the result set. The system either responds to specific user interest in receiving updates or infers relevance to decide whether or not to send a push notification to the user. The system calculates a score and sets threshold values above which a notification is sent to the user. The notifications could be sent by email, bite-sized alert, operating system (OS) alert …

Google Votes: A Liquid Democracy Experiment On A Corporate Social Network, Steve Hardt, Lia C. R. Lopes Jun 2015

Google Votes: A Liquid Democracy Experiment On A Corporate Social Network, Steve Hardt, Lia C. R. Lopes

Defensive Publications Series

This paper introduces Google Votes, an experiment in liquid democracy built on Google's internal corporate Google+ social network. Liquid democracy decision-making systems can scale to cover large groups by enabling voters to delegate their votes to other voters. This approach is in contrast to direct democracy systems where voters vote directly on issues, and representative democracy systems where voters elect representatives to vote on issues for them. Liquid democracy systems can provide many of the benefits of both direct and representative democracy systems with few of the weaknesses. Thus far, high implementation complexity and infrastructure costs have prevented widespread adoption. …

Pre-Fetching Batched Advertisements On Mobile Devices, Russell Quong, Steve Osborn May 2015

Pre-Fetching Batched Advertisements On Mobile Devices, Russell Quong, Steve Osborn

Defensive Publications Series

A mobile device may include an advertisement subsystem that can transmit ad requests to an advertisement network to receive batched advertisements to be stored in an ad cache. When an application executing on the mobile device requests an advertisement from the advertisement subsystem, the advertisement subsystem can select and serve the prefetched advertisement even if the mobile device is offline. Impression and/or performance data may be transmitted to the advertisement network once the mobile device is online. In some implementations, the advertisement subsystem can combine signal data from multiple applications having differing permissions to create a more comprehensive ad request. …

Absolute Attribution Using Frequency Extrapolation, Robert Marsa

Defensive Publications Series

Systems and methods pertaining to attribution are provided. In some implementations, a method enables assigning accurate credit to known factors by quantifying the effects of unknown factors in influencing behavior. The method may include examining a lift of being exposed to additional advertising to quantify the effect of the additional advertising. The method may further include measuring the lift directly for the non-zero events and using extrapolation to determine a baseline for the zero event.

Proximity Based Social Search, Justin Lewis, Gavin James Apr 2015

Proximity Based Social Search, Justin Lewis, Gavin James

Defensive Publications Series

The invention discloses a proximity search system. The system receives a search query from a first user to search for a second user. The system then identifies one or more candidate users in proximity to the first user. Further, the system transmits a proximity token to the respective client devices of the one or more candidate users. The system further causes the client devices to broadcast the proximity token. The system then determines that the first user’s client device detects the proximity token broadcasted by a second user’s client device. The system provides the first user with search results that …
