Innovation In Large Organizations: A Matter Of Value And Belief?, Daniela Rothkegel
Innovation In Large Organizations: A Matter Of Value And Belief?, Daniela Rothkegel
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper extends the design and organizational literature by evaluating the impact of values and beliefs on multi-levels as blocking factors in large organizations. The problem that has initiated this research is that large organizations often have difficulties to develop radical innovations. The idea of this research is to identify contradictions in intentions in the beginning of a multidisciplinary bottom-up initiative for new product development as possible reasons for the creation of hinders. Not identified contradictions remain hidden by psychological contracts. (Rousseau, 1995) A mapping exercise has been created to evaluate existing values and beliefs, roles and processes by assumptions, …
Shaping And Expressing Of Happiness Image In Products, Ju-Chuan Cheng, Ming-Chyuan Ho
Shaping And Expressing Of Happiness Image In Products, Ju-Chuan Cheng, Ming-Chyuan Ho
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Happiness is humans' constant and eternal pursuit. The aspiration for happiness is also directly reflected in presentation of products. Spiritual value of products can be shaped by design conversion. Compared with emotional products, products with image of happiness are much closer to aspiration deep in people's heart and play the role of enlightening and nourishing people's spirit. It's shown by literature analysis that the sense of happiness emerges from satisfaction to feeling, perception and sensation. Besides function and sense of beauty, the sensation of "bring happiness to people" should also be taken into consideration in products' connotation. This study is …
Co-Creating With Companies: A Design Led Process Of Learning, Alessandro Deserti, Francesca Rizzo
Co-Creating With Companies: A Design Led Process Of Learning, Alessandro Deserti, Francesca Rizzo
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Design emerged and spread at the beginning of the industrial era in a strongly industrial and product-oriented environment. Therefore it developed and consolidated around the notion of industrial product. Today, different voices are calling for a new role for design as a driver of innovation. Especially the notion of co-design, intended as the process of involving customers and end users in developing new products and services has been largely discussed as a source of competitive advantage and as a key element of innovation for companies. Co-design can help companies in generating new and alternative solutions that can satisfy the market …
Rethinking System Diagrams: From Arranging Components To Organizing Action, Thought, And Possibility, Soojin Jun, Miso Kim, Joonhwan Lee
Rethinking System Diagrams: From Arranging Components To Organizing Action, Thought, And Possibility, Soojin Jun, Miso Kim, Joonhwan Lee
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The use of system diagrams has encouraged information designers to tacitly consider the holistic context. However, because the traditional understanding about the nature of systems has been highly focused on the arrangement of components within a static model, users’ experience is considered little. The goal of this research is to provide a theoretical framework to broaden designers’ conception of the system diagram and enable them to design system diagrams that would prove most effective for different situations, needs, and design problems. Therefore, the key of system diagrams is to understand the relationship of how the system is organized, according to …
The Challenges Of Information Transfer Between The Client Organization And The Temporary Multi-Organization (Tmo), Michel De Blois
The Challenges Of Information Transfer Between The Client Organization And The Temporary Multi-Organization (Tmo), Michel De Blois
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The mechanisms required for the transfer of both implicit and explicit information between the client organization and the temporary multi-organization are crucial in the programming process of construction projects. However, the identification and transfer of needs within the conception phase from the client (and eventually the users) towards the project team are rarely direct and easy. (Nadler et al., 1992) The evaluation of the project outcome (“as built”) against the initial project proposal, allows for a better understanding of both the project process and the influence of informal communications in translating client/user needs. This research project, comprised of three phases, …

Exemplary Design Research, T Binder, J Redström
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Center for Design Research, Royal Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, Copenhagen, Denmark Many design programmes are currently under-going radical transformations as they move towards university status. Research and research-based education becomes part of the everyday of the design school. Also in design studios and design consultancies, design research is frequently heard of as a new venue of activity. But what is design research and how does it relate to design and to the more proven knowledge production of the sciences and humanities? In this paper we will suggest some answers to these questions. In particular, we will look …
Champions, Conformists, And Challengers: Attitudes Of Interior Designers As Expressions Of Sustainability Through Materials Selection, K. J. Mate
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Whilst the uptake of sustainable interior design has increased recently, material selection has improved only slightly since the mid-1990s. This is probably because human values and attitudes have not changed significantly, despite the prominence of sustainability in government policy. This paper describes the results of a research project that investigated the sustainability values of interior designers and examined how those values shape designers’ behaviour, particularly the selection of materials for design briefs involving sustainability. The project categorised designers into three groups according to their sustainability values: champions, conformists or challengers. A set questionnaire was used in interviews with 20 interior …
Building Research Across The Marketing-Psychology-Design Trilogy., Daniela Buchler, Philippa Ashton
Building Research Across The Marketing-Psychology-Design Trilogy., Daniela Buchler, Philippa Ashton
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The paper seeks to find links between concepts and research methods in Marketing, Psychology and Design using product differentiation as the central theme of the investigation. It focuses on the possibilities of cross–paradigm research and shows linking differentiation and perception is both original and lacking: “although many writers seem to imply that differentiation is based on customer perceptions, the connection between the intentions of the firm, and the subsequent perceptions of the customer is not well explained” (McGovern, 1987:5). Design in this context is the ‘hub’ that, by giving meaning to products, links aspects of marketing and psychology. One study …
New Models For Design Management In The Textile Industry In Response To Direct Digital Textile Print Technology And Manufacture., Bruce Carnie
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper is based on initial research including a literature review of the management of digital printing processes and technology in the paper and textile industries. For the purposes of this paper I will use the scope of thought evolved from the Design Management Institute in Boston USA. Continuing research will be augmented by quantitative data analysis and comparative analysis of case studies and also research of the philosophical underpinning of these business ventures. This paper is an introduction to the argument for a systematic approach to the impact of direct digital printing processes and technology on textile design using …
Innovation Planning Toolkit., Vijay Kumar
Innovation Planning Toolkit., Vijay Kumar
DRS Biennial Conference Series
To maintain leadership position, companies need to be continuously proactive in exploring new opportunities for innovation. Focusing on core offerings, customer support, and relationship management is a safe way to sustain business and maintain continued revenue flows. But complacency with the successes of core offerings and eagerness to serve the core customer base frequently leads to inaction in the search for new opportunities. Companies deliberately need to be in an active sensing mode during which new opportunities are continuously sought. An active innovation culture needs to evolve within organizations. This should be predominantly characterized by continuous exploration and search for …
