Socio Economic Determinants Of Spousal Violence Against Women In Myanmar, Lin Lin Mar
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Nowadays, the violence against women by spouses is a hidden social problem embedded in social and cultural norms in Myanmar. However, there are limited numbers of previous studies regarding spousal violence in Myanmar. Some studies utilized a qualitative approach, while some used a quantitative approach in some parts of Myanmar. This study aims to examine whether socioeconomic and demographic factors affecting spousal violence using a quantitative approach to fill the literature gap at the national level. It uses the data from the 2015-16 Myanmar Demographic and Health Survey. The explanatory variables are demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the women, their …

Direct And Indirect Impacts Of Education On Subjective Well-Being Of Older Persons In Vietnam : Gender Differences, Truc Ngoc Hoang Dang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Vietnam, like many developing countries, is undergoing a rapid pace of population ageing but within a resource limited context. Therefore, understanding the factors that are important to later life well-being has become a key policy issue. Using data from the 2011 Vietnam National Aging Survey, this thesis aims to investigate gender differences in the direct and indirect impacts of education on subjective well-being of older Vietnamese based on four domains: happiness, life satisfaction, loneliness, and depression (N=2,789, including 1,683 females and 1,106 males). The results from path analysis show that those with higher level of education are happier and more …

Impact Of Migration And Remittances On Children's Human Capital In Cambodia, Vatana Chea
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This dissertation investigates the impacts of migration and remittances on human capital development of left-behind children in Cambodia. It contributes new evidence to a controversial debate in the literature on long-term impacts of migration and of remittances on the children. This is from the perspective of education, health, and consumption in remittance-recipient households compared with those in non-recipient ones. It relies on pooled data from Cambodia Socio-Economic Survey of 2009 and 2014, each of which comprises around 12,000 households in both rural and urban areas across all 25 provinces there. To evaluate the impact on household educational investment, the study …

Using N-Alkane As A Proxy To Reconstruct Paleoenvironment In Thale Noi, Phatthalung Province, Assuma Sainakum
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Normal alkane (n-alkane) is the widely used hydrocarbon proxy for the paleoenvironmental study because of their specific characteristic and resistance to microbial degradation. The n-alkanes from the sediment cores TLN-CP5 and TLN-CP7 from Thale Noi, Phatthalung Province, were analyzed and subsequently compared with those derived from the recent plant samples. The plant samples were taken from mangrove forests, i.e. true mangrove, back mangrove, and mangrove associate, based on the previous study on pollen analysis. The n-alkane distributions, the average chain length (ACL), the carbon preference index (CPI) and the proportion of aquatic components (Paq) were further analyzed in order to …

Lithological Classification By Deep Learning Algorithm, Worapop Thongsame
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Six machine learning algorithms are used to classify subsurface rocks based on fifteen well logging features from four geothermal wells in the Snake River Plain, Idaho, USA. Two experimental designs, single- and multiple-well tests, are developed to determine the most optimal model and hyperparameters. The single-well test randomly assigns the data in each well into 70% for training set, 10% for validation set, and 20% for test set. The multiple-well test combines data from three wells and splits the data in the fourth well into 70% for training set, 10% for validation set, and 20% for test set. Results show …

What Would You Do, If I Get More? An Experimental Test On The Consequences Of Envy, Nattawut Hunyek
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Envy is an unpleasant emotion characterised by the feelings of inferiority, hostility, and resentment produced by an awareness of another person or group of persons who enjoy the desired possession which can motivate the envious person in two different paths, destructive (named malicious envy) and competitive (benign envy). This research presents an experimental design which involves real-effort task to study the quantitative difference between both types of envy. The results show that envy may incentivise subject to do both competitive and destructive things to make them feel better after realising their lower position. The self-position and reference agent position are …

Coordination Between Central And Local Control Of Photovoltaic Generation System For Controlling Voltage Violation And Unbalance In Distribution Systems, Anuwat Chanhome
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Solar energy is a clean and pollution-free energy. Economic growth has led to increased demand for electricity in many countries, which has encouraged the installation of solar power generation systems, especially in LV distribution system. Households have the potential to install solar power generation systems because the costs of installation and maintenance have been continuously decreased. However, when there are many connected solar power generation systems in LV distribution system, the following problems may occur: (1) Loss of real power generation due to the operation of overvoltage protection of solar power generation systems, especially the ones on downstream nodes and …

Application Of Model Predictive Control To Traffic Systems With Hierarchical Distributed Control Framework, Jeerapat Jitnaunt
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Traffic congestion is one of the chronic problems that degrades an urban traffic sustainable development especially the transport system. It seriously affects the quality of life of many people and becomes a catalyst of an increment of air pollution. If we can improve public infrastructure, logistics, and public transport system, they will reduce traffic congestion problem. This thesis aims to apply model predictive control (MPC) to traffic systems in a framework on hierarchical distributed control. The control structure composes of three layers which are network layer, area layer, and intersection layer. On the network layer and area layer, the control …

Reclaiming Stolen Voices : An Indigenous, Region-Based Reading Of Leslie Marmon SilkoS Ceremony, Patricia GraceS Potiki And Kiana DavenportS Shark Dialogues, Krittaporn Reungwattanakul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This thesis aims to examine how contemporary indigenous writers reclaim their self-definition through the born-within, region-based perspectives in three novels: Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony (1977), Patricia Grace' Potiki (1986), and Kiana Davenport's Shark Dialogues (1998). It propounds that the three novels employ indigenous myths, knowledge, and epistemologies to present their modern indigenous culture, history and identity as distinct from mainstream Western stereotypical perceptions. These writers also suggest the necessity for hybridization of traditional culture in order for indigenous cultures to survive when it comes into contact with the global community. The three selected literary texts present integral roles of nature …
