Identity, Norms And Recognition : A Constructivist Account Of Singapore–Taiwan Relations Under Strategic Constraint, Mohamad Faisal Bin Jamain Jan 2025

Identity, Norms And Recognition : A Constructivist Account Of Singapore–Taiwan Relations Under Strategic Constraint, Mohamad Faisal Bin Jamain

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis examines the enduring resilience of the Singapore–Taiwan relationship, which persists despite intensifying geopolitical constraints, rising diplomatic risks and modest material incentives. This persistence presents a realist paradox: while traditional materialist accounts establish the structural constraints (such as the “One China” policy and great-power rivalry) that rationally predict disengagement, they fail to systematically account for the specific mechanisms and ideational strategies that underpin the relationship's resilience. Addressing this critical theoretical gap, this study applies a constructivist framework centred on identity, norms and recognition, situating these ideational insights alongside material and geopolitical constraints to offer a holistic explanation. The primary …

Factors Affecting Sustainable Supply Chain Practices And Sustainability Performance, Kittinun Makprang

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Sustainable supply chain practices are increasingly emphasized as organizations seek to balance economic, social, and environmental responsibilities. Yet, empirical findings remain inconsistent, particularly in emerging economies where organizational readiness varies. This study examines (1) the influence of market orientation, dynamic capabilities, and managerial commitment on sustainable supply chain practices, and (2) whether these practices contribute to economic, social, and environmental performance. Data were collected from 159 managers across multiple industries in Thailand. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), supported by multi-group and interaction-effect analyses, was used to evaluate structural relationships and sectoral differences. The results show that market orientation …

Chilean Perceptions Of Thailand As Seen Through Social Media (2015 – 2024), Nicolas Agustin Castillo Aldunce

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis has two main objectives: 1) to examine the perception of Thailand as seen in Chilean social media between 2015 and 2024 and 2) to identify the prevailing narratives and stereotypes and underline the factors responsible for these perceptions. 120 social media posts about Thailand from 11 institutional and independent Chilean content creators are collected and analyzed and Richard Gregory’s theory of perception is applied as its theoretical framework. It is found that there was an increase in online contents related to Thailand since 2015 after the ratification of Chile-Thailand Free Trade Agreement, particularly between 2022 to 2024 when …

Imagining Peace From Abroad : How Myanmar Students In Bangkok Define Peace, Shinhyoung Choi

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis examines how Myanmar students living in Bangkok understand and define peace through their everyday experiences, social positions, and transnational lives. Drawing on a multi-stage, qualitatively driven research design—including a narrative survey, a structured follow-up survey, and in-depth interviews—the study investigates how students’ peace perceptions emerge while they navigate between Myanmar’s instability and Bangkok’s relative institutional order.Findings from 105 participants show that students’ peace orientations cluster into two dominant narratives: a Development-Oriented Narrative emphasizing education, opportunity, and gradual change, and a Resistance-Oriented Narrative emphasizing justice, accountability, and structural reform. Although the initial hypothesis assumed that Bangkok’s stability would directly …

Comparative Study Of Environmental Impacts Of End-Of-Life Management Approaches For Air Conditioners Using Lca., Viveha Sriskandaraja

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The amount of e-waste generated worldwide has surpassed 62 million tons, which has created consequences related to the management and disposal of e-waste. The primary concern regarding air-conditioners is waste management, as these units consist of plastics, metals, hazardous materials, and refrigerants. Improper disposal or leakage of refrigerants poses a significant greenhouse gas threat that accelerates climate change. The end-of-life (EOL) stage is often overlooked in the management of discarded air-conditioners. Therefore, this study focuses on filling the knowledge gap regarding the comparison of EOL management methods and analysing the effectiveness of regulated management methods. This study aims to use …

Global Englishers Language Teaching Perceptions And Practices Of Vietnamese Preservice English Teachers, Vu Hoai Nhan Dang

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This mixed-methods study explores how Vietnamese preservice English teachers perceive and practice Global Englishes Language Teaching (GELT). In Phase 1, 100 third- and fourth-year preservice teachers completed a 24-item perceptions questionnaire, and six of them participated in in-depth interviews. Mean questionnaire responses were at the “Agree” level (M = 3.52 on a 5-point scale), indicating broad acceptance of GELT while still revealing gaps in training and materials, especially in using English varieties, integrating intercultural communication, and implementing GELT-oriented activities. Building on these findings, Phase 2 invited 30 volunteers from the original cohort to complete pre- and post-intervention questionnaires, while six …

Nat Kunn And Nat Nann: Changes Of “Body Techniques” And Domestic Spaces Within The Spiritual Cult Of Myanmar, Aung Khant

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The British colonization of Burma in 1885 marked a turning point in Myanmar’s traditional society, particularly in changes of body techniques, shikho (prostration), and the practice of wearing or removing shoes in sacred spaces. While recent scholars have examined the changes in body techniques and spiritual cult, the relationship between body techniques and domestic spaces has remained underexplored. Tracing the changes in techniques from Colonial Burma to contemporary Myanmar, this thesis explores the relationship between body techniques and domestic spaces, Nat Kunn, small shrines dedicated to specific Nats, deities, and Nat Nann, which are larger shrines for the Nat Pantheon. …

Potted Plants In Urban Spaces: Analyzing Social And Spatial Dynamics For Urban Management In Bangkok's Residential Areas, Chihiro Okajima Jan 2025

Potted Plants In Urban Spaces: Analyzing Social And Spatial Dynamics For Urban Management In Bangkok's Residential Areas, Chihiro Okajima

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Potted plants have long served as portable, small-scale gardens for residents in Thailand, particularly in densely populated and flood-prone areas. In Bangkok, they remain a common feature of the urban landscape, reflecting both everyday life and traditional Thai culture. Beyond their cultural and visual value, these potted plants are increasingly recognized as a practical form of green infrastructure, especially in high-density urban areas where space is limited. However, current rigid regulatory frameworks—which distinguish strictly between public and private spaces—prioritize keeping sidewalks clear, creating tension between city and residents as most potted plants are placed on public land beyond private property …

Cinematic Architecture: Perceiving The Real From The Reel In How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies Film Setting, Edbert Theo Fortino Jan 2025

Cinematic Architecture: Perceiving The Real From The Reel In How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies Film Setting, Edbert Theo Fortino

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Cinematic architecture is a multidisciplinary approach that examines the relationship between film and architecture. This thesis explores how film offers a unique way to immerse audiences in spatial experience. Through time, movement, and visual framing, film can dramatize or reinterpret space according to the director’s vision, making it a valuable medium for understanding how architecture is perceived, used, and felt. Film also visualizes fragments of real everyday life, cultural practices, and spatial behaviour. Observing how characters inhabit and interact with spaces reveals how real users interpret the functional and symbolic meanings of architecture—insights often overlooked when architects rely solely on …

Analysing Biophilic And Technophilic Design In Architectural Materiality: A Comparative Study Of Bangkok's Community Malls, Thailand, Min Si Hein

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study examines how architectural materiality and perceptual attributes influence human sensory and emotional experience through the theoretical frameworks of biophilia and technophilia. Focusing on two community malls in Bangkok—The Commons Thong Lo and Zone C of Marché Thong Lo—the research adopts a qualitative comparative case study approach, combining on-site observation, photographic documentation, and semi-structured interviews. The study applies an attribute-based analytical framework that categorizes architectural experience into six dimensions: material origin, sensory qualities, user interaction, visual comfort, spatial atmosphere, and emotional response. The findings reveal that The Commons Thong Lo expresses a predominantly biophilic orientation, characterized by natural materials, …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research examines the visual homogenization of music video (MV) production among Southeast Asian girl groups under K-pop's influence—a phenomenon termed K-popization—to elucidate its localization processes within this complex, multi-layered region. It addresses three key research questions: (1) What are the characteristics of K-popization? (2) How are K-pop visual elements localized? and (3) How can communication design practices investigate K-popization in MV production? The study analyzes MVs from K-pop and SEA-pop girl groups uploaded to YouTube (each with over 10,000 views) between January 2019 and July 2025, encompassing 76 Southeast Asian girl groups (296 MVs) and 111 Korean girl groups …

Investigating The Spatiality Of Sites Of Youth Āddā (Informal Social Hangout) In Changing Urban Landscape: A Study Of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, Md Samiul Sabbir Islam

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Recent urban transformation in the Global South, driven by globalization, commodification, and a logic of development, is producing homogenized cities and increasingly regulated public spaces. Within this context, the Bengali practice of adda (āddā), understood as prolonged informal, convivial conversation, embodies a form of non-instrumental sociability that resists commodification and control. Although a historically and cultural rooted practice, scholarly attention to adda has been limited. The spatial dimensions of adda, the characteristics of its sites, or how changing urban conditions influence the practice, especially among youth remain under-explored. This study investigates the spatiality of youth adda in the rapidly transforming …

The Determinants Of Short-Term And Long-Term Performance Of Initial Public Offering: Evidence From The Stock Exchange Of Thailand (Set) And Market For Alternative Investment (Mai), Chittakrij Peungsugk

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study examines the determinants of short and long-term IPO performance in the SET and mai market. Using samples of SET and mai IPOs from 2014-2021, the research investigates how underwriter reputation, institutional investor ownership, and big-4 auditor influence cumulative abnormal returns across time horizons. From information asymmetry, certification, and signaling theories, the study uses multiple linear regression with OLS to analyze IPO performance. Results are different between the two markets. Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis investigates the impact of Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU) and Climate Policy Uncertainty (CPU) on ESG momentum strategies in U.S. equity markets from 2011 to 2023. Momentum portfolios are constructed within high- and low-rated ESG pillar groups to assess how policy uncertainty influences their performance across different firm characteristics, including sectoral classification and geographic operations. Empirical analysis reveals that policy uncertainty, particularly through Forecast and News channels, significantly affects momentum returns, with the strongest effects concentrated among low ESG-rated and domestically focused firms. Cyclical sectors display heightened sensitivity to both EPU and CPU, while international firms show weaker or …
