Mass Transfer From A Vertical Flat Plate Due To A Constant Upward Flow, David Mcdonnell, Brendan Redmond, Lawrence J. Crane
Mass Transfer From A Vertical Flat Plate Due To A Constant Upward Flow, David Mcdonnell, Brendan Redmond, Lawrence J. Crane
Articles
This paper examines the mass transfer from a vertical flat surface of a soluble material due to a constant upward flow. The mass transfer rate due to this upward flow is calculated and used to obtain the distance along the surface at which the boundary layer separates. For relatively large velocities no separation will occur and the solution approaches that of forced convection on a horizontal surface.

An Investigation Of The Biochemical Properties Of Tetrazines As Potential Coating Additives, Swarna Jaiswal, Brendan Duffy, Luke O'Neill, Patrick Mchale
Articles
1,2,4,5-Tetrazine and its 3,6-disubstituted derivatives are currently used for a range of industrial and medical applications as they exhibit particular coordination chemistries, characterized by electron and charge transfer phenomena. The aim of the present work is to describe the synthesis of two tetrazine derivatives, namely 3,6-dihydrazino-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (DHDTZ) and 1,2,4,5-tetrazine dicarboxylic acid (DCTZ), and determine their antibacterial, antioxidant and anticorrosion characteristics as additives in a sol-gel coating on SS316L steel. The structure of the tetrazines was confirmed by NMR and FTIR while the surface morphology of bacterial cells in their presence was observed by AFM. Their ability to inhibit corrosion on …

Novel Microwave Assisted Synthesis Of Zns Nanomaterials, Suresh Pillai, Michael Seery, Damian Synnott, John Colreavy, Stephen Hinder
Articles
A novel ambient pressure microwave-assisted technique is developed in which silver and indium modified ZnS is synthesised. The as prepared ZnS is characterised by X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and luminescence spectroscopy. This procedure produced crystalline materials with particle sizes below 10 nm. The synthesis technique leads to defects in the crystal which induce mid energy levels in the band gap and lead to indoor light photocatalytic activity. Increasing the amount of silver causes a phase transition from cubic blende to hexagonal phase ZnS. In a comparative study, when the ZnS cubic blende is heated in a conventional …
Augmented Resistance: The Possibilities For Ar And Data Driven Art, Conor Mcgarrigle
Augmented Resistance: The Possibilities For Ar And Data Driven Art, Conor Mcgarrigle
Articles
This article discusses the possibilities for Augmented Reality (AR) as a driver of data based art. The combination of AR and Open Data (in the broadest post-Wikileaks sense) is seen to provide a powerful tool-set for the artist/activist to augment specific sites with a critical, context-specific data layer. Such situated interventions offer powerful new methods for the political activation of sites which enhance and strengthen traditional non- virtual approaches and should be thought of as complementary to, rather than replacing, physical intervention.
I offer as a case study this author’s “NAMAland” project, a mobile artwork which uses Open Data and …

Raman Spectroscopy In Nanomedicine: Current Status And Future Perspectives, Hugh Byrne, Mark Keating
Articles
Raman spectroscopy is a branch of vibration spectroscopy which is capable of probing the chemical composition of materials. Recent advances in Raman microscopy have added significantly to the range of applications which now extend from medical diagnostics to exploring interfaces between biological organisms and nanomaterials. In this review, Raman is introduced in a general context, highlighting some of the areas in which the technique has found success in the past, as well as some of the potential benefits it offers over other analytical modalities. The subset of Raman techniques which specifically probe the nanoscale, namely Surface Enhanced and Tip Enhanced …
Forget The FlâNeur, Conor Mcgarrigle
Forget The FlâNeur, Conor Mcgarrigle
Articles
This paper discusses the connections between the ‘flâneur’, Baudelaire's symbol of modernity, the anonymous man on the streets of nineteenth century Paris, and his contemporary digital incarnation, the ‘cyberflâneur’. It is argued that, although the flâ- neur could be successfully re-imagined as the cyberflâneur in the early days of the web, this nine- teenth century model of male privilege no longer fits the purpose. It is suggested that it is time to forget the flâneur and search for a new model to consider the peripatetic nature of location-aware networked devices in the digitally augmented city.
Dual-Band Omnidirectional Circularly Polarized Antenna, Adam Narbudowicz, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann
Dual-Band Omnidirectional Circularly Polarized Antenna, Adam Narbudowicz, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann
Articles
A dual-band omnidirectional circularly polarized antenna is proposed. The antenna comprises back-to-back microstrip patches fed by a coplanar waveguide. A very low frequency ratio of 1.182 has been achieved, which can be easily tuned by adjusting four lumped capacitors incorporated into the antenna. An analysis of the omnidirectional circular polarization mechanism as well the dual band operation is provided and confirmed by numerical and experimental data. Key parameters to tune the resonant frequencies and the axial ratio have been identified. The prototype antenna provides omnidirectional circular polarization in one plane with cross polar isolation better than 12 dB for both …

Health care services both globally and domestically - are encountering critical issues due to the increasing demand for services at the time of economic recession. Hospital performance is subject to many constraints, and planning is made more difficult by the complexity and uncertainty of demand. Population ageing is creating immense pressures on healthcare facilities across the world, leaving them struggling to cope with the growing demand for elderly healthcare services. Current demand-supply gaps result in prolonged waiting times for patients and substantial cost burdens for healthcare systems due to delayed discharges. This paper reports on a project that uses modelling …

Simulation-Based Framework To Improve Patient Experience In An Emergency Department, Waleed Abo-Hamad, Amr Arisha
Simulation-Based Framework To Improve Patient Experience In An Emergency Department, Waleed Abo-Hamad, Amr Arisha
Articles
The global economic crisis has a significant impact on healthcare resource provision worldwide. The management of limited healthcare resources is further challenged by the high level of uncertainty in demand, which can lead to unbalanced utilisation of the available resources and a potential deterioration of patient satisfaction in terms of longer waiting times and perceived reduced quality of services. Therefore, healthcare managers require timely and accurate tools to optimise resource utility in a complex and ever-changing patient care process. An interactive simulation-based decision support framework is presented in this paper for healthcare process improvement. Complexity and different levels of variability …

This Article argues that mass torts involving multiple tortfeasors can be welfare enhancing It begins by investigating the role of "dilution of liability" "” a phenomenon that has been condemned for its role in facilitating accidents According to the literature in alternative care situations where the damage to the victim is constant dilution of liability leads to inefficient precaution levels and consequently to more bad accidents The Article deviates from this literature and shows that dilution of liability can be welfare enhancing This is so even in the quintessential case where dilution of liability has been denounced The Article further …

The Article III standing doctrine "” with its three requirements of injury in fact causation and redressability "” is often criticized as a restriction that prevents liberal but not conservative plaintiffs from proceeding in the federal courts As I have recently shown however 87 IND LJ 551 2012 standing doctrine has increasingly been an issue in many cases involving conservative litigants in challenges to the landmark federal healthcare law and to conservative appellants defending the federal Defense of Marriage Act and California's constitutional ban on marriage between samesex couples We now have Supreme Court decisions in those cases and the …

Congress's (Limited) Power To Represent Itself In Court, Tara Leigh Grove, Neal Devins
Articles
Scholars and jurists have long assumed that when the executive branch declines to defend a federal statute Congress may intervene in federal court to defend the law When invalidating the Defense of Marriage Act for example no Justice challenged the authority of the House of Representatives to defend federal laws in at least some circumstances At the same time in recent litigation over the Fast and Furious gunrunning case the Department of Justice asserted that the House could not go to court to enforce a subpoena against the executive We seek to challenge both claims We argue that Congress has …

The Law Of The Body, Meredith M. Render
The Law Of The Body, Meredith M. Render
Articles
This Article posits that a "law of the body" is overdue. In the absence of clarity about the legal status of the human body, courts have constructed a collection of circumstantially defined categories for resolving the question of human body ownership and use. This patchwork approach is awkward, unwieldy, incoherent, and, by many lights, ultimately unjust. Many able minds have been applied to critiquing the distributive consequences of a regime in which we cannot-at any point in our lives- "own" our own bodies (or its constituent parts), but other people can and do. But what has been missing from these …
Deconstructing Deem And Pass: A Constitutional Analysis Of The Enactment Of Bills By Implication, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr.
Deconstructing Deem And Pass: A Constitutional Analysis Of The Enactment Of Bills By Implication, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr.
Articles
Since 1933, the U.S. House of Representatives has maintained a procedure, the self-executing rule, that permits a single floor vote to pass multiple independent bills. Using this procedure, the House can pass a bill and, at the same time, "deem passed" entirely separate bills via a single floor vote. Some legal scholars have argued that this procedure is constitutionally unobjectionable, provided that members of the House clearly understand the legislative effects, whether singular or plural, of a particular vote. Others, however, have argued that the device violates the Constitution because the House and Senate do not vote on the same …

The Exceptions Clause As A Structural Safeguard, Tara Leigh Grove
The Exceptions Clause As A Structural Safeguard, Tara Leigh Grove
Articles
Scholars have long treated the Exceptions Clause of Article III as a serious threat to the Supreme Court's central constitutional function establishing definitive and uniform rules of federal law This Article argues that scholars have overlooked an important function of the Clause Congress has repeatedly used its broad "exceptions power" to facilitate not to undermine the Supreme Court's constitutional role Drawing on insights from social science this Article asserts that Congress has an incentive to use its control over federal jurisdiction to promote the Court's role in settling disputed federal questions Notably this argument has considerable historical support When the …
