Evaporation Screening, Scattering, And Quantum Tunneling Near The Horizons Of Schwarzschild And Reissner-Nordstroem Black Holes, Emil Prodanov Jan 2014

Evaporation Screening, Scattering, And Quantum Tunneling Near The Horizons Of Schwarzschild And Reissner-Nordstroem Black Holes, Emil Prodanov

Articles

For the radial motion of massive particles with large angular momenta in Schwarzschild geometry and that of massive charged particles with large
angular momenta or energy in a particular range in Reissner-Nordstroem geometry, there exist classically forbidden regions on the outside of
the respective event horizons which scatter certain in-falling geodesics or screen some of the black holes' evaporation by reflecting the emitted

particles back into the black holes. Quantum tunneling across this forbidden regions is studied.

Atmospheric Cold Plasma Inactivation Of Escherichia Coli, Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium And Listeria Monocytogenes Inoculated On Fresh Produce, Dana Ziuzina, Sonal Patil, Patrick J. Cullen, Kevin Keener, Paula Bourke

Articles

Atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) represents a potential alternative to traditional methods for non-thermal decontamination of foods. In this study, the antimicrobial efficacy of a novel dielectric barrier discharge ACP device against Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica Typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes inoculated on cherry tomatoes and strawberries, was examined. Bacteria were spot inoculated on the produce surface, air dried and sealed inside a rigid polypropylene container. Samples were indirectly exposed (i.e. placed outside plasma discharge) to a high voltage (70kVRMS) air ACP and subsequently stored at room temperature for 24 h. ACP treatment for 10, 60 and 120 s resulted in reduction …

Improved Efficiency Of Brewer’S Spent Grain Arabinoxylans By Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction, Sofia Reis, Elisabete Coelho, Manuel Coimbra, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam

Articles

Arabinoxylan (AX) rich extracts from brewer’s spent grain (BSG) were produced by the application of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and conventional alkaline extraction (AKE). UAE and AKE were optimised for the production of the highest yield of ethanol insoluble material using response surface methodology (RSM). The efficiency of UAE was established by the significant reduction of time (7h to 25 min) and energy when compared to AKE, to recover similar amount of AX (60%) from BSG, leading to the production of starch-free AX-rich extracts.

How To Feel Like A Woman, Or Why Punishment Is A Drag, Mary Anne Franks Jan 2014

How To Feel Like A Woman, Or Why Punishment Is A Drag, Mary Anne Franks

Articles

If a man in prison says that he was made -to feel like a woman," this is commonly understood to mean that he was degraded, dehumanized, and sexualized. This association of femininity with punishment has significant implications for the way our society understands not only the sexual abuse of men in prison but also sexual abuse generally These important implications are usually overlooked, however, because law and society typically regard prison feminization as a problem of gender transposition: that is, as a problem of men being treated like women. In contrast, this Article argues that feminization is punitive for both …

Hamiltonian Formulation Of 2 Bounded Immiscible Media With Constant Non-Zero Vorticities And A Common Interface, Alan Compelli Jan 2014

Hamiltonian Formulation Of 2 Bounded Immiscible Media With Constant Non-Zero Vorticities And A Common Interface, Alan Compelli

Articles

We examine a 2-dimensional water-wave system, with gravitationally induced waves, consisting of a lower medium bound underneath by an impermeable flat bed and an upper medium bound above by an impermeable lid such that the 2 media have a free common interface. Both media have constant density and constant (non-zero) vorticity. By examining the governing equations of the system we calculate the Hamiltonian of the system in terms of it's conjugate variables and per- form a variable transformation to show that it has canonical Hamiltonian structure.

Β-Lactam Estrogen Receptor Antagonists And A Dual-Targeting Estrogen Receptor/Tubulin Ligand, Niamh O'Boyle, Jade K. Pollock, Miriam Carr, Andrew Js Knox, Seema M. Nathwani, Shu Wang, Laura Caboni, Daniela M. Zisterer, Mary Meegan

Articles

Twelve novel β-lactams were synthesised and their antiproliferative effects and binding affinity for the predominant isoforms of the estrogen receptor (ER), ERα and ERβ, were determined. β-Lactams 23 and 26 had the strongest binding affinities for ERα (IC50 values: 40 and 8 nM respectively) and ERβ (IC50 values: 19 and 15 nM). β-Lactam 26 was the most potent in antiproliferative assays using MCF-7 breast cancer cells, and further biochemical analysis showed that it caused accumulation of cells in G2/M phase (mitotic blockade) and depolymerisation of tubulin in MCF-7 cells. Compound 26 also induced apoptosis and downregulation …

In Vitro Oxygen Availability Modulates The Effect Of Artesunate On Hela Cells, James Murray, Sandra Gannan, Sarah Rawe, James Murphy Jan 2014

In Vitro Oxygen Availability Modulates The Effect Of Artesunate On Hela Cells, James Murray, Sandra Gannan, Sarah Rawe, James Murphy

Articles

Background/Aim: Hypoxia can affect chemo - therapeutic drug efficacy in cancer patients, yet related in vitro assays in oxygen-rich environment remain the norm. Such levels are well beyond normoxic/hypoxic levels typically experienced by normal tissues/tumor masses. The present study evaluated how artesunate anti-tumor efficacy is modulated by oxygen availability in HeLa cells and its implications for future in vitro analyses. Materials and Methods: Real-time cell analysis was employed to evaluate HeLa cell toxicity to artesunate at 21%, 4% or 1% oxygen. Cell count analysis was performed to validate real-time data. Results: An increase in artesunate efficacy was observed when oxygen …

Unwinding The Ceiling Rule, Leigh Osofsky Jan 2014

Unwinding The Ceiling Rule, Leigh Osofsky

Articles

This article closely examines the unwinding of the ceiling rule. Congress and partnership tax experts historically have assumed perfect unwinding of the ceiling rule on liquidation or sale of a partnership interest. However, this assumption glosses over a significantly more complicated reality. This article closely examines the history of section 704(c) and the interaction between the ceiling rule and the rules regarding sales and liquidations of partnership interests to reveal the extent to which the assumption does not hold. By debunking long-held assumptions about the perfect unwinding of the ceiling rule, this article displays that there is no reasonable justification …

Concentrated Enforcement, Leigh Osofsky Jan 2014

Concentrated Enforcement, Leigh Osofsky

Articles

When enforcement resources are limited, how should the scarce enforcement resources be allocated to increase compliance with the law? The answer to this question can determine to what extent the law on the books translates to the law in practice. A dominant school of thought in the tax literature suggests that they should be allocated based on a "worst-first" method, whereby the individuals likely to be most noncompliant are targeted. However, while "worst-first" methods can encourage all individuals to increase compliance so as not to be deemed the "worst, " they can also provide cover to engage in noncompliance that …

Apportioning State Personal Income Taxes To Eliminate The Double Taxation Of Dual Residents: Thoughts Provoked By The Proposed Minnesota Snowbird Tax, Edward A. Zelinsky Jan 2014

Apportioning State Personal Income Taxes To Eliminate The Double Taxation Of Dual Residents: Thoughts Provoked By The Proposed Minnesota Snowbird Tax, Edward A. Zelinsky

Articles

As a matter of both tax policy and constitutional law, it is time to apportion state personal income taxes to eliminate the double taxation of dual residents. Individuals who, for income tax purposes, are residents are two or more states should be taxed along the lines recently proposed by Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton for “snowbirds”: As to income with respect to which a state has source jurisdiction, that state should tax such income. As to income which two or more states tax only on the basis of residence, such states should apportion, based on the dual resident’s relative presence in …

Vibrational Spectroscopic Analysis Of Body Fluids: Avoiding Molecular Contamination Using Centrifugal Filtration, Franck Bonnier, Matthew Baker, Hugh Byrne Jan 2014

Vibrational Spectroscopic Analysis Of Body Fluids: Avoiding Molecular Contamination Using Centrifugal Filtration, Franck Bonnier, Matthew Baker, Hugh Byrne

Articles

The use of centrifugal filtration for protein purification and concentration represents an important improvement for the application of vibrational spectroscopy to analysis of bodily fluids based on protein fractions with specific molecular weight. Vibrational spectroscopic techniques are highly specific and can potentially detect small variations in the protein content indicating the presence of different diseases, therefore usable as markers for early diagnostic. However, due to the high sensitivity of the techniques, it is essential to verify that no molecular contamination occurs during the preparation of the samples. Concentration of the blood serum using commercially available centrifugal filters has been shown …

Antibody-Drug Gold Nanoantennas With Raman Spectroscopic Fingerprints For In Vivo Tumour Theranostics, Joao Conde, Chenchen Bao, Daxiang Cui, Pedro Baptista, Furong Tian

Articles

Inspired by the ability of SERS nanoantennas to provide an integrated platform to enhance disease targeting in vivo, we developed a highly sensitive probe for in vivo tumoral recognition with the capacity to target specific cancer biomarkers such as epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) on human cancer cells and xenograft tumour models. Here, we used ~90 nm gold nanoparticles capped by a Raman reporter, encapsulated and entrapped by larger polymers and a FDA antibody-drug conjugate –Cetuximab (Erbitux®) – that specifically targets EGFR and turns off a main signalling cascade for cancer cells to proliferate and survive. These drug/SERS gold nanoantennas …

Exosomes Are Involved In Mediating Radiation Induced Bystander Signaling In Human Keratinocyte Cells, K. Kumar Jella, S. Rani, L. O'Driscoll, B. Mcclean, H. J. Byrne, F. M. Lyng Jan 2014

Exosomes Are Involved In Mediating Radiation Induced Bystander Signaling In Human Keratinocyte Cells, K. Kumar Jella, S. Rani, L. O'Driscoll, B. Mcclean, H. J. Byrne, F. M. Lyng

Articles

There is much evidence supporting the existence of bystander effects in cells that were never exposed to radiation. Directly irradiated cells and bystander cells can communicate with each other using gap junctional intercellular communication or by releasing soluble factors into the surrounding medium. Exosomes and microvesicles are also known to mediate communication between cells. The main aim of this study is to establish whether exosomes and microvesicles are involved in radiation induced bystander signaling. Human keratinocytes, HaCaT cells, were irradiated (0.005, 0.05 and 0.5 Gy) using γ rays produced from a cobalt 60 teletherapy unit. After irradiation, the cells were …

Cell Survival And Dna Damage In Normal Prostate Cells Irradiated Out-Of-Field, L. Shields, I. Vega-Carrascal, S. Singleton, F. M. Lyng, B. Mcclean Jan 2014

Cell Survival And Dna Damage In Normal Prostate Cells Irradiated Out-Of-Field, L. Shields, I. Vega-Carrascal, S. Singleton, F. M. Lyng, B. Mcclean

Articles

Interest in out-of-field radiation dose has been increasing with the introduction of new techniques, such as volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT). These new techniques offer superior conformity of high-dose regions to the target compared to conventional techniques, however more normal tissue is exposed to low-dose radiation with VMAT. There is a potential increase in radiobiological effectiveness associated with lower energy photons delivered during VMAT as normal cells are exposed to a temporal change in incident photon energy spectrum. During VMAT deliveries, normal cells can be exposed to the primary radiation beam, as well as to transmission and scatter radiation. The …

Training The New Litigator: Some Assembly Required, Leonard M. Niehoff Jan 2014

Training The New Litigator: Some Assembly Required, Leonard M. Niehoff

Articles

The financial crisis of 2008 brought the legal profession to a crossroads. Indeed, it brought the profession to so many crossroads that we awoke to find ourselves in a surreal cityscape that seemed to consist of nothing but dangerous intersections. Law firms faced tough decisions about which way to go: Should we get smaller, or stay the course, or take advantage of the buyer's market for new and lateral hires? Should we jettison struggling clients or stand beside them? Should we cut budgets for business development, or do we need them now more than ever? Should we pursue some practice …

Zombies Among Us: Injunctions In Defamation Cases Come Back From The Dead, Jim Stewart, Leonard M. Niehoff

Articles

Here's a scary thought: an individual, unhappy with negative statements that have been made about him, sues for defamation and persuades the trial court to issue an injunction prohibiting the speaker from engaging in that speech again. An appellate court reviews the injunction and, in large measure, upholds it. This creepy scenario brings shudders to free speech and media advocates, who have long viewed such injunctions as prior restraints that the First Amendment forbids in all but the most extreme and extraordinary cases. As a recent decision from the Michigan Court of Appeals demonstrates, however, decades of United States Supreme …

Global Administrative Law And The Post-Crisis Financial Order, Michael S. Barr Jan 2014

Global Administrative Law And The Post-Crisis Financial Order, Michael S. Barr

Articles

The global financial crisis caused widespread harm not just to the financial system, but also to millions of households and businesses, and to the global economy.1 The crisis revealed substantive, fundamental weaknesses in global financial regulation, and raised serious questions about whether national regulators and the international financial regulatory system could ever be up to the task of overseeing global finance. The Bretton Woods institutions (the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization) were never really equipped to deal with the growing complexity, breadth, and size of the global financial system, and instead left rulemaking and …
