Persistence Pays Off: Paying Attention To What The Lstm Gating Mechanism Persists, John D. Kelleher, Giancarlo Salton Jan 2019

Persistence Pays Off: Paying Attention To What The Lstm Gating Mechanism Persists, John D. Kelleher, Giancarlo Salton

Articles

Language Models (LMs) are important components in several Natural Language Processing systems. Recurrent Neural Network LMs composed of LSTM units, especially those augmented with an external memory, have achieved state-of-the-art results. However, these models still struggle to process long sequences which are more likely to contain long-distance dependencies because of information fading and a bias towards more recent information. In this paper we demonstrate an effective mechanism for retrieving information in a memory augmented LSTM LM based on attending to information in memory in proportion to the number of timesteps the LSTM gating mechanism persisted the information.

Hard: A Heterogeneity-Aware Replica Deletion For Hdfs, Hilmi Egemen Ciritoglu, John Murphy, Christina Thorpe Jan 2019

Hard: A Heterogeneity-Aware Replica Deletion For Hdfs, Hilmi Egemen Ciritoglu, John Murphy, Christina Thorpe

Articles

The Hadoop distributed fle system (HDFS) is responsible for storing very large datasets reliably on clusters of commodity machines. The HDFS takes advantage of replication to serve data requested by clients with high throughput. Data replication is a trade-of between better data availability and higher disk usage. Recent studies propose diferent data replication management frameworks that alter the replication factor of fles dynamically in response to the popularity of the data, keeping more replicas for in-demand data to enhance the overall performance of the system. When data gets less popular, these schemes reduce the replication factor, which changes the data …

Bigger Versus Similar: Selecting A Background Corpus For First Story Detection Based On Distributional Similarity, Fei Wang, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher Jan 2019

Bigger Versus Similar: Selecting A Background Corpus For First Story Detection Based On Distributional Similarity, Fei Wang, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher

Articles

The current state of the art for First Story Detection (FSD) are nearest neighbourbased models with traditional term vector representations; however, one challenge faced by FSD models is that the document representation is usually defined by the vocabulary and term frequency from a background corpus. Consequently, the ideal background corpus should arguably be both large-scale to ensure adequate term coverage, and similar to the target domain in terms of the language distribution. However, given these two factors cannot always be mutually satisfied, in this paper we examine whether the distributional similarity of common terms is more important than the scale …

Predicting Quality Attributes And Waste Of Strawberry Packed Under Modified Atmosphere Throughout The Cold Chain, Kompal Johsi, Brijesh Tiwari, Patrick J. Cullen, Jesus Maria Frias

Articles

Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) is used commercially to extend the shelf life of strawberries. The attainment of desired gas (O2, CO2) concentrations inside MAP relies on the product respiration and the mass transfer through packaging and will affect the quality. The objective of this work is to build a mathematical model for strawberries to assess the effect of the uncertainties on headspace gas concentration and quality: 1) cold chain related temperature and relative humidity variations and 2) variability associated to product respiration and quality based on literature. Weight loss was more influenced by the cold chain storage conditions (temperature and …

Investigation Of Coastal Sea-Fog Formation Using The Wibs (Wide Band Integrated Bioaerosol Sensor) Technique, Shane M. Daly, David O'Connor, David A. Healy, Stig Hellebust, Jovanna Arndt, Eoinj. Mcgillicuddy, Patrick Feeney, Michael Quirke, John C. Wenger, John R. Sodeau

Articles

Abstract. A wideband integrated bioaerosol sensor (WIBS4) was deployed in Haulbowline Island, Cork Harbour, to detect fluorescence particles in real time during July and September 2011. A scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) was also installed providing sizing analysis of the particles over the 10–450nm range. During the campaign, multiple fog formation events occurred; they coincided with dramatic increases in the recorded fluorescent particle counts. The WIBS sizing and fluorescence intensity profiles indicated that the origin of the signals was potentially non-biological in nature (i.e. PBAPs, primary biological aerosol particles). Furthermore, the data did not support the presence of known fluorescing …

Author’s Note: This is the author’s submitted manuscript which has subsequently been published in the Journal of Validation Technology (www.ivtnetwork.com, Volume 25, Issue 4 – August 2019).

While knowledge management (KM) has been widely applied in other sectors, the international biopharmaceutical sector has struggled with the meaningful and sustained application of effective KM practices. This is evident even though KM has been highlighted in regulatory guidance for over 10 years, and the positive business impact of KM is well recognized in other sectors. This paper focuses on the topic of KM as applied to biopharmaceutical technology transfer, introducing …

Innovating Inclusion: The Impact Of Women On Private Company Boards, Jennifer S. Fan Jan 2019

Innovating Inclusion: The Impact Of Women On Private Company Boards, Jennifer S. Fan

Articles

Eight percent—that is the percentage of women who serve on the boards of directors of private high technology companies. Private companies, particularly high technology companies, have transformed citizens’ daily lives, while the unprecedented availability of private capital has allowed those companies to remain private longer. This rise, however, has also obscured some of the weaknesses of private companies, which are not subject to public disclosure and regulatory oversight: rampant sexual harassment, the lack of women leaders in technology companies, the relative absence of female venture capitalists, and the dearth of female board members, to name a few. Yet thus far, …

Uncompromising Hunger For Justice: Resistance, Sacrifice, And Latcrit Theory, Brenda Williams, Edwin Lindo, Marc-Tizoc González

Articles

In this Article, three law professors report on and theorize a nonviolent direct-action campaign of the kind discussed by Dr. King in his famous Letter from a Birmingham Jail. Using the basic steps of the nonviolent campaign as an organizing framework, they analyze and report on the 18-day hunger strike by the Frisco 5 (a.k.a., Frisco5). This direct action protested the extrajudicial killings of Amilcar Perez-Lopez, Alex Nieto, Luis Góngora-Pat, and Mario Woods by San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) officers and advocated for institutional change to reduce the risk of homicides against persons with similarly racialized minority-group identities. Two weeks …

Black, Poor, And Gone: Civil Rights Law’S Inner-City Crisis, Anthony V. Alfieri Jan 2019

Black, Poor, And Gone: Civil Rights Law’S Inner-City Crisis, Anthony V. Alfieri

Articles

In recent years, academics committed to a new law and sociology of poverty and inequality have sounded a call to revisit the inner city as a site of cultural and socio-legal research. Both advocates in anti-poverty and civil rights organizations, and scholars in law school clinical and university social policy programs, have echoed this call. Together they have embraced the inner city as a context for experiential learning, qualitative research, and legal-political advocacy regarding concentrated poverty, neighborhood disadvantage, residential segregation, and mass incarceration. Indeed, for academics, advocates, and activists alike, the inner city stands out as a focal point of …

From Dreaming To Believing: A Review Of Consumer Engagement Behaviours With Brands’ Social Media Content Across The Holiday Travel Process, Dean Creevey, Etain Kidney, Glenn Mehta

Articles

This paper reviews social media user engagement behaviours with brands and proposes a new stage within the travel process. Specifically, the pre-trip stage is examined and investigation into a two sub-stage split is proposed; pre-purchase and post-purchase. Dubbed the Believing phase, this paper calls for research into the patterns of engagement behaviour towards hotel brands’ content at this currently under-researched stage. Current social media-focussed research examines influence on purchasing decisions of users, social media usage on-site, and post-trip evaluation. There remains a conceptual gap highlighting the behavioural patterns of users during the period between initial purchase and subsequent departure.

Researching Pure Digital Entrepreneurship – A Multimethod Insider Action Research Approach, Kisito Futonge Nzembayie, Anthony Paul Buckley, Thomas M. Cooney Jan 2019

Researching Pure Digital Entrepreneurship – A Multimethod Insider Action Research Approach, Kisito Futonge Nzembayie, Anthony Paul Buckley, Thomas M. Cooney

Articles

Knowledge production in Pure Digital Entrepreneurship (PDE) needs to reflect the non-linear nature of a journey defined by digital artifact and platform creation. Accordingly, this paper proposes and offers practical guidance on the use of Multimethod Insider Action Research (MIAR) as a suitable research design for studying the entrepreneurial journey in this context. It argues for integrating first-person Reflective Practice, second-person Collaborative Inquiry and Design Research for third-person knowledge production that balances rigour and relevance. While calls for such forms of longitudinal process inquiry have largely gone unanswered due to identified challenges, this paper uses a case narrative to illustrate …

Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Therapeutic Solutions Using Raman And Infrared Spectroscopy, Alaa A. Makki, Franck Bonnier, Renaud Respaud, Fatma Chtara, Ali Tfayli, Clovis Tauber, Dominique Bertrand, Hugh Byrne, Elhadi Mohammed, Igor Chourpa

Articles

Anticancer drugs are prescribed and administrated to an increasing number of patients on a daily basis. As a consequence, a number of concerns have been raised about the patient health and safety in the case that the drugs administered are not at the required concentration or even worse not the correct ones. Quality control of therapeutic solutions has therefore been extensively implemented in hospital environments, in order to avoid any failure in the intense workflow faced by administering pharmacists. In the present study, infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy have been employed for the analysis of 3 commercially available therapeutic solutions …

Impact Of Plasma Treatment On Acoustic Properties Of Natural Cellulose Materials, Sanja S. Pavlović, Snežana B. Stanković, Andrijana Žekić, Miloš Nenadović, Dušan M. Popović, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Goran B. Poparić

Articles

Low-temperature plasma is widely used in many surface treatment technologies for modifications of the physical properties of different polymeric materials. In the present work, we have examined the modification of acoustical properties of natural cellulose materials (cotton, hemp) by the radio-frequency argon plasma. We have observed an increase of the sound absorption coefficient due to the plasma treatment for certain range of applied powers. An analysis of elementary processes which happened during plasma–material interaction was conducted. Additional analyses related to material characterizations were performed in order to resolve structural and chemical changes of plasma treated materials. The micro-mechanical modification of …

The Bullet In The Brick: The Materiality Of Conflict In Museum Objects, Siobhan Doyle Jan 2019

The Bullet In The Brick: The Materiality Of Conflict In Museum Objects, Siobhan Doyle

Articles

Tangible traces of conflict in visual artefacts can take viewers uncomfortably close to the realities of war—violence, destruction and fatalities. This article questions the evidential force of objects associated with conflict and their eventual display in exhibitions. Through a study of the display of a brick in which is embedded a bullet that is said to have passed through the body of Francis Sheehy Skeffington when he was executed by firing squad during the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916, this article explores the historical configuration of the brick and analyses its public display in the National Museum of Ireland …

Traversing States: A Reflection On Digital Technology And Simondon's Critique Of Hylomorphism, Michael O'Hara Jan 2019

Traversing States: A Reflection On Digital Technology And Simondon's Critique Of Hylomorphism, Michael O'Hara

Articles

In this article, I examine Simondon's concept of the technical object reflecting on its analogous relationship to digital technology. Intrinsic to such an analysis is Simondon's distinction between the abstract and concrete and his specific critique of the hylomorphic model. In a deeply rich example, Simondon, contra Aristotle, mobilises the process of mould-making as an exemplar of the modulated ensemble of forces that prefigure any formations of matter through form. I analyse Simondon's paradigmatic criticism while at the same time carving out the potential intersections that emerge through the kinaesthetic awareness of the body. By doing so I highlight the …

An Empirical Analysis Of Sexual Orientation Discrimination, J. Shahar Dillbary, Griffin Edwards Jan 2019

An Empirical Analysis Of Sexual Orientation Discrimination, J. Shahar Dillbary, Griffin Edwards

Articles

This study is the first to empirically demonstrate widespread discrimination across the United States based on perceived sexual orientation sex and race in the mortgage lending process Our analysis of over five million mortgage applications reveals that any FHA loan application filed by samesex male coapplicants is significantly less likely to be approved compared to the white heterosexual baseline holding lending risk constant The most likely explanation for this pattern is sexual orientation based discrimination "” despite the fact that FHA loans are the only type of loan in which discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is prohibited brbrMoreover …

Children As Bargaining Chips, Clare Ryan Jan 2019

Children As Bargaining Chips, Clare Ryan

Articles

The parent- child relationship is one of the most valued and protected relationships in constitutional and family law. At the same time, the state has custodial power over children: a power that is necessary in some cases to protect vulnerable children from danger, neglect, and abandonment. But because the parent-child bond is so powerful, state actors can be tempted to exploit it for their own purposes. Custodial power over children provides state actors with the means to put pressure on the parent by threatening to remove the child. In these circumstances, the state uses the child as a bargaining chip …

Community Consequences Of Airbnb, Allyson E. Gold Jan 2019

Community Consequences Of Airbnb, Allyson E. Gold

Articles

Short-term rental accommodations account for more than 20% of the United States lodging market, with annual sales now greater than those of nearly all legacy hotel brands. The rise of companies like Airbnb has created a booming market that provides affordable short-term rentals for travelers and new income for those with an extra couch, spare room, or even an unused home. However, while individual hosts and guests may benefit economically, the use of short-term rentals produces significant consequences for the surrounding community. Airbnb proliferation causes fewer affordable housing options, higher average asking rents, and erosion of neighborhood social capital. Due …

Taming Blockbuster Punitive Damages Awards, Benjamin J. Mcmichael, W. Kip Viscusi

Articles

Blockbuster punitive damages awards ie those awards exceeding 100 million attract attention based on their sheer size While there have been fewer such awards in the last decade they remain an important presence in the legal landscape Taking notice of these and other large punitive damages awards courts and state policymakers have taken steps to both constrain them and render them more predictable States have enacted punitive damages caps to limit the amount of punitive damages courts can award but these caps often contain a number of exceptions and apply only to damages under a specific state's law At a …

Notice Pleading In Exile, Adam N. Steinman

Articles

According to the conventional wisdom the Supreme Courts 2009 decision in Ashcroft v Iqbal discarded notice pleading in favor of plausibility pleading This Article "” part of a symposium commemorating the Iqbal decisions tenth anniversary "” highlights decisions during those ten years that have continued to endorse notice pleading despite Iqbal It also argues that those decisions reflect the best way to read the Iqbal decision Although Iqbal is a troubling decision in many respects it can be implemented consistently with the noticepleading framework that the original drafters of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure had in mind
