On P-Adic Modules With Isomorphic Endomorphism Algebras, Brendan Goldsmith, Noel White

Articles

We investigate pairs of modules over the ring of p-adic integers having isomorphic endomorphism algebras. In many cases this forces the modules to be isomorphic but there are two exceptional situations where isomorphism does not follow.

The following presents a comparison of an extrinsic Fabry–Perot interferometer (EFPI)- based temperature sensor, constructed using a novel diaphragm manufacturing technique, with a reference all-glass EFPI temperature sensor. The novel diaphragm was manufactured using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The novel sensor fabrication involved fusing a single-mode fibre (SMF) to a length of fused quartz capillary, which has an inner diameter of 132 µm and a 220 µm outer diameter. The capillary was subsequently polished until the distal face of the capillary extended approximately 60 µm beyond that of the single mode fibre. Upon completion of polishing, the assembly is immersed in …

On The Mandelbrot Set For I**2 = ±1 And Imaginary Higgs Fields, Jonathan Blackledge Jan 2021

On The Mandelbrot Set For I**2 = ±1 And Imaginary Higgs Fields, Jonathan Blackledge

Articles

We consider the consequence of breaking with a fundamental result in complex analysisby lettingi2=±1wherei=√−1is the basic unit of all imaginary numbers. An analysis of theMandelbrot set for this case shows that a demarcation between a Fractal and a Euclidean object ispossible based oni2=−1andi2= +1, respectively. Further, we consider the transient behaviourassociated with the two cases to produce a range of non-standard sets in which a Fractal geometricstructure is transformed into a Euclidean object. In the case of the Mandelbrot set, the Euclideanobject is a square whose properties are investigate. Coupled with the associated Julia sets and othercomplex plane mappings, this …

Development Of A Smart Energy Community By Coupling Neighbouring Community Microgrids For Enhanced Power Sharing Using Customised Droop Control, Sandipan Patra, Madichetty Sreedhar, Malabika Basu Jan 2021

Development Of A Smart Energy Community By Coupling Neighbouring Community Microgrids For Enhanced Power Sharing Using Customised Droop Control, Sandipan Patra, Madichetty Sreedhar, Malabika Basu

Articles

This article aims to develop a smart isolated energy community (EC) by coupling the neighbouring rural community microgrids (CMGs) with enhanced droop control for efficient power sharing. This recommended solution employs a power management (PM) based droop-control to enable independent neighbouring CMGs to share power on an available basis by not constraining CMG inverters to equal power sharing. During the grid-connected mode, the droop control may have different power setpoints of each CMG. However, during the standalone mode of operation, the power setpoint should be defined according to their power rating and availability to maintain the system stability. In this …

Above And Beyond: Ethics And Responsibility In Civil Engineering, Shannon Chance, Rob Lawlor, Inês Direito Direito, John Mitchell

Articles

This exploratory study investigates how nine London-based civil engineers have enacted ‘global responsibility’ and how their efforts involve ethics and professionalism. The study assesses moral philosophies related to ethics, as well as professional engineering bodies’ visions, accreditation standards, and requirements for continuing professional development. Regarding ethics, the study questions where the line falls between what an engineer ‘must do’ and what ‘would be good to do’. Although the term ethics did not spring to mind when participants were asked about making decisions related to global responsibility, participants’ concern for protecting the environment and making life better for people did, nonetheless, …

Visualizing The Impact Of Europe’S Slow Covid-19 Vaccine Rollout, Mathias Beck, Gail Sheppard

Articles

On 31 March 2021, the WHO Regional Office for Europe issued a formal statement of concern regarding the slow vaccine rollout across Europe [1]. The WHO noted that the “Region remains the second most affected by SARS-CoV-2 of all the world’s regions” which was worrying, especially because the more transmissible B.1.1.7 was now dominant in the region [1]. It further contrasted this with the experiences of the UK, by noting that according to data from Public Health England, “COVID-19 vaccines have saved, at the very least, over 6,000 lives among people over 70 since vaccination started in December 2020”. Beyond …

Let Knowledge Make Recommendations For You, Zhiixue Jiang, Chengying Chi, Yun Yun Zhan Jan 2021

Let Knowledge Make Recommendations For You, Zhiixue Jiang, Chengying Chi, Yun Yun Zhan

Articles

The knowledge graph can make more accurate personalized recommendations for the recommendation system, but it is also interpretative and has traces to follow. The purpose of the recommendation system is to recommend a series of unobserved items for users. At present, recommendation systems based on knowledge graphs are mainly implemented in two ways: Embedding-based and path based. Embedding methods usually directly use information from the knowledge graph to enrich the representation of an item or user. Still, it failed to introduce multi-hop relations, and it is challenging to use semantic network information. A path-based recommendation algorithm utilizes the knowledge graph …

The diagnosis of prostate cancer is challenging due to the heterogeneity of its presentations, leading to the over diagnosis and treatment of non-clinically important disease. Accurate diagnosis can directly benefit a patient’s quality of life and prognosis. Towards addressing this issue, we present a learning model for the automatic identification of prostate cancer. While many prostate cancer studies have adopted Raman spectroscopy approaches, none have utilised the combination of Raman Chemical Imaging (RCI) and other imaging modalities. This study uses multimodal images formed from stained Digital Histopathology (DP) and unstained RCI. The approach was developed and tested on a set …

Articles

The Republic of Ireland (ROI) currently reports the highest incidence rates of Shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC) enteritis and cryptosporidiosis in Europe, with the spatial distribution of both infections exhibiting a clear urban/rural divide. To date, no investigation of the role of socio-demographic profile on the incidence of either infection in the ROI has been undertaken. The current study employed bivariate analyses and Random Forest classification to identify associations between individual components of a national deprivation index and spatially aggregated cases of STEC enteritis and cryptosporidiosis. Classification accuracies ranged from 78.2% (STEC, urban) to 90.6% (cryptosporidiosis, rural). STEC incidence was …

Articles

Hypercalcemia of malignancy (HCM) can present secondary to hypersecretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH)-related protein (PTHrP) from malignant tumors, but rare cases of HCM have also been documented due to inappropriate PTH secretion from ectopic neoplasms. Here, we report an unusual case of HCM due to hypersecretion of PTH suspected secondary to a disseminated mucinous ovarian adenocarcinoma. A 45-year-old female presented with severe hypercalcemia and significant elevations in both PTH and PTHrP two weeks after total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and suboptimal debulking of a newly discovered left ovarian mucinous adenocarcinoma with numerous metastases. Ectopic PTH secretion was highly suspected …

Climate-Induced Human Displacement And Conservation Lands, Jessica Owley Jan 2021

Climate-Induced Human Displacement And Conservation Lands, Jessica Owley

Articles

As climate change leads to both internal displacement and mass migrations, we need not only new places for people to live but also new locations for infrastructure projects and other public needs. Some of the most attractive areas for these new land uses are currently unoccupied land, including land set aside for conservation. Numerous laws restrict the availability and possible uses of public conservation land. Individual agreements and property restrictions encumber private conservation land, varying in the ease with which the restrictions can be modified. For example, privately protected areas in the United States are often encumbered with perpetual conservation …

Government Speech And First Amendment Capture, Caroline Mala Corbin Jan 2021

Government Speech And First Amendment Capture, Caroline Mala Corbin

Articles

Alarm regarding government speech is not new. In earlier decades, scholars worried that the government's speech might monopolize a marketplace and drown out opposing viewpoints. But today, using a move I term "First Amendment capture," the government need not be the loudest speaker because it can become the only speaker. First Amendment capture has been made possible by the Supreme Court's developing government speech doctrine, which holds that government speech is not subject to the Free Speech Clause. Consequently, once speech is declared governmental, the government may censor viewpoints it does not like. First Amendment capture categorizing contested speech as …

The Case Against Collective Liability, J. Shahar Dillbary Jan 2021

The Case Against Collective Liability, J. Shahar Dillbary

Articles

Collective liability-defined as the imposition of liability on a group that may include innocent actors-is commonplace. From ancient to modem times, legislators, regulators, and courts have imposed such liability when they believe that the culprit is a member of the group. Examples of collective liability abound: from surgical teams held jointly liable for a misplaced sponge to entire families evicted from their homes for the drug-related activity of a single person under the "One Strike Rule." Courts recognize, of course, that collective liability punishes the innocent, but they view it as a necessary evil to smoke out and punish an …

Redliking: When Redlining Goes Online, Allyson Gold Jan 2021

Redliking: When Redlining Goes Online, Allyson Gold

Articles

Airbnb's structure, design, and algorithm create a website architecture that allows user discrimination to prevent minority hosts from realizing the same economic benefits from short-term rental platforms as White hosts, a phenomenon this Article refers to as "redliking." For hosts with an unused home, a spare room, or an extra couch, Airbnb provides an opportunity to create new income streams and increase wealth. Airbnb encourages prospective guests to view host photographs, names, and personal information when considering potential accommodations, thereby inviting bias, both implicit and overt, to permeate transactions. This bias has financial consequences. Empirical research on host earning rates …

The Law Of Emerging Adults, Clare Ryan Jan 2021

The Law Of Emerging Adults, Clare Ryan

Articles

Law tends to divide people into two groups based on age: children and adults. The age of majority provides a bright line between two quite different legal regimes. Minority is characterized by dependency, parental control, incapacity, and diminished responsibility. Adulthood is characterized by autonomy, capacity, and financial and legal responsibility. Over the course of the twentieth century, evolving understandings of adolescence in law and culture produced a staged process of increasing liberty and responsibility up to the age of majority. After eighteen, however, the presumption of adulthood remains strong. Today, a combination of psychological and social factors has extended the …

State-Created Fetal Harm, Benjamin Mcmichael, Meghan Boone Jan 2021

State-Created Fetal Harm, Benjamin Mcmichael, Meghan Boone

Articles

Half a century of state-level restrictions on abortion access might cause a casual observer to conclude that state governments have a long-standing commitment to protecting fetal life. And yet, over the last several decades, state governments and local law enforcement are increasingly taking steps that actively undermine fetal health. Through the passage of state fetal endangerment laws and the prosecution of pregnant women under stretched interpretations of existing criminal laws, states are actively creating conditions that result in poorer fetal health outcomes-including an increase in fetal and infant death.

This Article seeks to make three important contributions to the scholarly …

Sex, Crime, And Serostatus, Courtney K. Cross Jan 2021

Sex, Crime, And Serostatus, Courtney K. Cross

Articles

The HIV crisis in the United States is far from over. The confluence of widespread opioid usage, high rates of HIV infection, and rapidly shrinking rural medical infrastructure has created a public health powder keg across the American South. Yet few states have responded to this grim reality by expanding social and medical services. Instead, criminalizing the behavior of people with HIV remains an overused and counterproductive tool for addressing this crisis - especially in the South, where HIV-specific criminal laws are enforced with the most frequency.

People living with HIV are subject to arrest, prosecution, and lengthy prison sentences …

Unintended Legislative Inertia, Mirit Eyal-Cohen Jan 2021

Unintended Legislative Inertia, Mirit Eyal-Cohen

Articles

Institutional and political forces create strong inertial pressures that make updating legislation a difficult task. As a result, laws often stagnate, leading to the continued existence of obsolete rules and policies that serve long-forgotten purposes. Recognizing this inertial power, legislatures over the last few decades have increasingly relied on a perceived solution -- temporary legislation. In theory, this measure avoids inertia by requiring legislators to choose to extend a law deliberately.

This Article argues that temporary legislation is a double-edged sword. While some temporary laws ultimately expire, many perpetuate through cycles of extension and reauthorization. Temporary legislation often creates its …
