Internet Sexual Predators: Protecting Children In The Global Community, Madeleine M. Plasencia Jan 2000

Internet Sexual Predators: Protecting Children In The Global Community, Madeleine M. Plasencia

Articles

The Internet, serving as the largest network of computers in the world, has provided the horizontal parallax over which all can participate in communication and transaction, education and entertainment4 It also serves a community of participants and beneficiaries whose goals are not always shared or legal. The rise of this advanced technology has led to a new "red light district."

Unlike the physical spaces available for the distribution of pornography and sexual favors for money, the Internet, with its lack of structure, has led to an unimaginable amount of pornography available for any on-line spectator.' Information necessary for consummation of …

Cell Surface Effects Of Androgens Between 1 Pm And 100 Nm On Rat Sertoli Cells And Two Human Prostatic Cell Lines, Lncap And Pc3: Evidence For Two Membrance Receptors, Fiona Lyng, G. R. Jones, F. F.G. Rommerts Jan 2000

Cell Surface Effects Of Androgens Between 1 Pm And 100 Nm On Rat Sertoli Cells And Two Human Prostatic Cell Lines, Lncap And Pc3: Evidence For Two Membrance Receptors, Fiona Lyng, G. R. Jones, F. F.G. Rommerts

Articles

Androgen-induced calcium fluxes and gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) were studied in three different cell types. A transient (2–3 min duration) increase in intracellular calcium levels was observed within 20–30 sec of androgen addition, which was followed by a plateau phase with steroid concentrations higher than 1 nM. The kinetics of the calcium responses were similar in immature rat Sertoli cells, which contain normal nuclear receptors; the human prostatic tumor cell line, LNCaP, which contains a mutated nuclear receptor; and the human prostatic cell line, PC3, which does not contain a nuclear receptor. The human A431 tumor cell line did …

Legal Education In The Digital Age, Stephen M. Johnson Jan 2000

Legal Education In The Digital Age, Stephen M. Johnson

Articles

The reports of the demise of traditional law school teaching methods have been greatly exaggerated, however. Historically, reforms in legal education have moved glacially. For reasons described in this Article, it is unlikely that law schools and the American Bar Association will radically restructure legal education in the coming decades, regardless of any potential benefits. Part I of this Article provides a short history of legal education and the introduction of technology into legal education. Part H examines the potential use of technology to enhance traditional law school teaching, or to replace it with "classroom-free" or "extended classroom" teaching methods. …

A Model Of Organic Matter Accumulation In A Developing Fen/Raised Bog Complex, Alan Gilmer, Nicholas Holden, Shane Ward, Anthony Brereton, Edward Farrell Jan 2000

A Model Of Organic Matter Accumulation In A Developing Fen/Raised Bog Complex, Alan Gilmer, Nicholas Holden, Shane Ward, Anthony Brereton, Edward Farrell

Articles

A mechanistic simulation model of organic matter accumulation for a developing fen/raised bog complex in Ireland is presented. Parameter/variable values have been primarily drawn from the published literature. The development of the theoretical considerations of fen peat as a substratum to a raised bog is evaluated using the model. Terrestrialization is the pathway of hydroseral succession. The conceptual model treats peat growth as the accumulation of a series of parcels comprising both a labile and a non-labile component. The fen phase of the model uses a discrete description of organic matter accumulation while the raised bog phase uses a continuous …

Transit Of Straits And Archipelagic Waters By Military Aircraft, Bernard H. Oxman Jan 2000

Transit Of Straits And Archipelagic Waters By Military Aircraft, Bernard H. Oxman

Articles

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea balances the interests of states in ways that are more refined than the classic summa divisio between the free high seas and territorial waters. The result for aviation is the preservation of freedom of overflight for civil and military aircraft seaward of the territorial sea in the exclusive economic zone as on the high seas beyond, and the right of such aircraft to transit archipelagic waters as well as straits comprised of territorial seas and internal waters. A proper understanding of the scope of these rights and their relationship to the …

The Treaty Power And American Federalism, Part Ii, Curtis A. Bradley Jan 2000

The Treaty Power And American Federalism, Part Ii, Curtis A. Bradley

Articles

In an article published in this Review two years ago, I described and critiqued what I called the "nationalist view" of the treaty power. Under this view, the national government has the constitutional power to enter into treaties, and thereby create binding national law by virtue of the Supremacy Clause, without regard to either subject matter or federalism limitations. This view is reflected in the writings of a number of prominent foreign affairs law scholars, as well as in the American Law Institute's Restatement (Third) of Foreign Relations Law of the United States. In my article, I argued that this …

Ironing Out The Flat Tax, David A. Weisbach Jan 2000

Ironing Out The Flat Tax, David A. Weisbach

Articles

While the Flat Tax has attracted substantial attention, proponents of the tax have not given any details of its implementation. Without this detail, evaluation of the tax is difficult. Claims of simplicity may be false. The efficiency claims for the Flat Tax rely on its relative unavoidability and its cleanly stated economic incentives, but without details, these claims cannot be evaluated Moreover, the distribution of the tax burden will be affected by its implementation. This article attempts to fill in the gap by considering the design issues presented by the Flat Tax. A wide variety of issues are considered, including …

The Adolescent's Stake In The Allocation Of Educational Control Between Parent And State, Emily Buss Jan 2000

The Adolescent's Stake In The Allocation Of Educational Control Between Parent And State, Emily Buss

Articles

Courts policymakers; and scholars have long struggled with the question of how to allocate educational control between parents and the state, particularly where parents' preferences are religiously motivated. While the debate reflects a broad range of viewpoints, these viewpoints share a common blind spot: They focus on the state's interest in imparting certain knowledge and skills; and ignore the state's interest in facilitating interactions among ideologically diverse peers. This Article argues that, particularly for older adolescents, the nature of their peer interactions has a far bigger impact on their development than does the content of their curriculum. Drawing on the …
