A Methodology For Planning Distance Learning Courses, Anthony Trippe Jan 2002

A Methodology For Planning Distance Learning Courses, Anthony Trippe

Articles

This article is based on personal experience gained as a result of facilitating over sixty asynchronous classes over the last four years. The article is organized into five areas of review and consideration which can assist the faculty member to plan and develop a learning-centered course intended for distance delivery. Whether in the classroom or on the Internet, critical scrutiny and analysis of the elements of a course is essential for development of a high quality course. The review points presented in this article specifically address key considerations for development for a course delivered in a virtual environment.

Designing Programming Courses For Et Students, Anthony Trippe Jan 2002

Designing Programming Courses For Et Students, Anthony Trippe

Articles

Rochester Institute of Technology offers a three-course technical programming sequence for Engineering Technology students. All three courses are required for Computer Engineering Technology students. The first two courses are required for Telecommunications ET students. Electrical and Civil ET students are required to take only the first course of the sequence. This paper reviews and discusses the events and experiences associated with the development and initial conduct of this sequence of C++ programming courses. It details how the courses were designed to assist ET students to better succeed in higher level courses taken later in their program sequence. Foundation elements of …

Discovering Diversity In Marketing Practice, John Murray, Aidan O'Driscoll, Ann Torres Jan 2002

Discovering Diversity In Marketing Practice, John Murray, Aidan O'Driscoll, Ann Torres

Articles

Marketing practice varies among firms. However, the prescriptive literature emphasises a universal view of practice, a “one-size-fits-all” view. This paper addresses the issue of explaining diversity in competitive space and over time. Diversity in competitive space reflects the existence of different routes to high performance. Diversity over time reflects some combination of change in the individual firm and change in a population of firms. In the former case, diversity is shaped by organisational change; in the latter by the disbandment and founding of firms in the population. Miles and Snow’s typology is taken as a main point of departure in …

Tournaments With A Transitive Subtournament As A Feedback Arc Set, Jennifer Baldwin, William Kronholm, Darren Narayan Jan 2002

Tournaments With A Transitive Subtournament As A Feedback Arc Set, Jennifer Baldwin, William Kronholm, Darren Narayan

Articles

Given an acyclic digraph D, we seek a smallest sized tournament T that has D as a minimum feedback arc set. The reversing number of a digraph is defined to be r(D) = |V (T)|−|V (D)| . The case where D is a tournament Tn was studied by Isaak in 1995 using an integer linear programming formulation. In particular, this approach was used to produce lower bounds for r(Tn), and it was conjectured that the given bounds were tight. We examine the class of tournaments where n = 2k +2k−2 and show the known lower bounds for r(Tn) are best …

Balancing Localization And Globalization: Exploring The Impact Of Globalization On An Opto/Photonics Cluster, Richard De Martino, David Reid, Stelios Zyglidopoulos Jan 2002

Balancing Localization And Globalization: Exploring The Impact Of Globalization On An Opto/Photonics Cluster, Richard De Martino, David Reid, Stelios Zyglidopoulos

Articles

This paper reports the finds of an exploration study on the impact of globalization on regional industrial clusters. The past decade has witnessed the popularization of two somewhat contradictory trends in geographical competitiveness: the importance of localization and globalization. This paper reports the preliminary findings of research conducted on the internationalization of the optics/photonics clusters based in Rochester, NY. Twenty-two senior executives were interviewed, face-to-face. Using content analysis combined with a grounded theory influenced approached the texts of these interviews were appraised. A number of salient findings emerged regarding relationships among localization, internationalization, and firm capacity.

A recent trend in so-called "second generation" legal commentary about the Internet suggests that, though it is an unparalleled communication medium and a means of engaging in global e-commerce, it is not an unmitigated force for good. Instead, the Net poses a fundamental danger to democracy. This trend takes shape in works by well-known cyberlaw theorists like Lawrence Lessig, Andrew Shapiro, and Neil Weinstock Netanel, but the most recent and most troubling criticism lies in Professor Cass Sunstein 's Republic.com. In this book, Professor Sunstein argues that perfect filtering of information on the Internet will lead to a fractured communications …

Predictably Incoherent Judgments, Cass R. Sunstein, Daniel Kahneman, Ilana Ritov, David Schkade Jan 2002

Predictably Incoherent Judgments, Cass R. Sunstein, Daniel Kahneman, Ilana Ritov, David Schkade

Articles

When people make moral or legal judgments in isolation, they produce a pattern of outcomes that they would themselves reject, if only they could see that pattern as a whole. A major reason is that human thinking is category-bound. When people see a case in isolation, they spontaneously compare it to other cases that are mainly drawn from the same category of harms. When people are required to compare cases that involve different kinds of harms, judgments that appear sensible when the problems are considered separately often appear incoherent and arbitrary in the broader context. Another major source of incoherence …

Switching The Default Rule, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2002

Switching The Default Rule, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

There is a standard analysis of default rules in contract law, including those forms of contract law that fall under the label of employment law. But behavioral economics raises many complications. Professor Cass R. Sunstein explains that the default rule can create an endowment effect, making employees value certain rights more, simply because they have been granted such rights in the first instance. New evidence, based on a survey of law students, is introduced to show a significant endowment effect in the context of vacation time. Similarly, the default rule for savings plans, set by employers or by law, seems …
