Innovation In Non-Profit And For-Profit Organizations: Visionary, Strategic, And Financial Considerations, Clyde Hull, Brian Lio Jan 2006

Innovation In Non-Profit And For-Profit Organizations: Visionary, Strategic, And Financial Considerations, Clyde Hull, Brian Lio

Articles

Innovation has been widely studied in the context of for-profit organizations. Less attention has been paid in business literature to innovation in non-profit organizations. This paper lays out a model for comparison and then explores the differnce between the two types of organizations. Using these data, predictions are made as to how these differences between the two types of innovative behavior of non-profit organizations and theories are proposed about the methods of innovation most suited to a non-profit organization. A theory model is presented which incorporates differences in vision, in strategic constraints, and in financial constraints.

Teaching Six Sigma Concepts In A Business School Curriculum, William Stevenson, A. Erhan Mergen

Articles

This paper discusses the desirability of incorporating Six Sigma thinking into an undergraduate business curriculum, and several alternatives for doing so. Although many companies have adopted Six Sigma programs to improve business results, few business programs have kept pace by incorporating Six-Sigma thinking into their curricula. Business results, few business programs Sigma concepts in improving operations and achieving higher standards of quality. Projects are selected that are likely to achieve reductions in cost, time, and increased profits. The linking of project selection based on business results is central to the desirability of teaching Six Sigma thinking to business students. Doing …

Competing Discourses On Journalism Education, Nora French Jan 2006

Competing Discourses On Journalism Education, Nora French

Articles

This paper is concerned with the lack of an agreed framework for the curriculum for journalism education. The paper reports on research into the beliefs and values underlying the two main undergraduate degree programmes in journalism in Ireland, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the concepts of journalism and journalism education on which the curricula were based. Critical discourse analysis was used in the research. The discrepancies found in the two concepts within and between different texts make clear that the problems within journalism education reflect the wider problems of lack of closure in the discourses of …

Promoting Values As West Meets East, Michael Foley Jan 2006

Promoting Values As West Meets East, Michael Foley

Articles

As Western training agencies increasingly promote ‘democratic journalistic values’ in the former communist countries, Michael Foley argues that progress will only occur if the West ceases to see in journalism a way of strengthening the marketplace and helps local experts develop their own models

The Forgotten Role Of Women Insurgents In The 1916 Rising, Tom Clonan Jan 2006

The Forgotten Role Of Women Insurgents In The 1916 Rising, Tom Clonan

Articles

The Women of the 1916 War is normally spoken of in the exclusively masculine sense – particularly by those with no experience of combat. Historical accounts of war tend to describe conflict almost solely in terms of male participation as combatants - thus reinforcing the myth of combat as an exclusively male preserve. In a similar vein – despite the de facto role that women have always played in war and combat - the current debate around our commemoration of the Easter Rising consists of a highly gendered discussion on reclaiming a legitimate remembrance of this problematic event from certain …

Irish Intelligence Staff Work From Kosovo To Kabul, Tom Clonan Jan 2006

Irish Intelligence Staff Work From Kosovo To Kabul, Tom Clonan

Articles

Normally associated with routine troop deployments and logistic support to UN peace keeping and peace enforcement missions worldwide, the Irish Defence Forces have recently dramatically expanded their international intelligence presence abroad. In the wake of 9/11, Ireland’s Military Intelligence Directorate was expanded in order to assess emerging threats to the state – both external and internal – posed by global terrorist networks such as Al Qaeda. As an independent state agency, Ireland’s military intelligence are focused on long term trends within the global security environment across a broad spectrum of threats, from nuclear, biological and chemical weapons proliferation to the …

Holiday Home Owners, A Route To Sustainable Tourism Development? An Economic Analysis Of Tourist Expenditure Data, Ziene Mottiar Jan 2006

Holiday Home Owners, A Route To Sustainable Tourism Development? An Economic Analysis Of Tourist Expenditure Data, Ziene Mottiar

Articles

Although sustainability comprises economic social and environmental aspects, economic analysis has been less evident in this literature. This article takes an economic perspective to evaluate the contribution of holiday home owners to a local economy. Tourism destinations which are at the mature stages of the tourism lifecycle wish to maximise revenue from tourism while minimising costs such as overcrowding. A prime objective has to be to attract the more valuable tourists. The analysis of North Wexford in Ireland poses questions such as: How does the holiday home owners’ expenditure in the local area compare to that of traditional tourists? Do …

Design Of Integrated Polarization Beam Splitter With Liquid Crystal, Qian Wang, Gerald Farrell, Yuliya Semenova Jan 2006

Design Of Integrated Polarization Beam Splitter With Liquid Crystal, Qian Wang, Gerald Farrell, Yuliya Semenova

Articles

An integrated polarization beam splitter based on a directional coupler (DC) with an etched slot and filled-in liquid crystal covering layer, which utilizes the birefringence of liquid crystal materials, is proposed. A supermode solution for the DC involving birefringence materials and the corresponding full-vector anisotropic beam propagation method are employed as modeling tools. A numerical design of the proposed structure is presented. Beam propagation behavior along the whole structure involving curved input and output regions and central coupling region is simulated. Simulation result shows an extinction ratio of 25.3 and 41.9 dB for the TE and TM mode, respectively.

A Novel Gps Patch Antenna On A Fractal Hi-Impedance Surface Substrate, Xiulong Bao, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann, Matthias John

Articles

A compact high-performance circularly-polarized microstrip antenna for the global positioning system application is proposed. It comprises a fractal hi-impedance surface electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure printed on a high permittivity substrate. Measurements and simulation of return loss and axial ratio are in good agreement. It is shown that the proposed Global Positioning System antenna has good axial ratio performance in the upper half-plane, an improvement in gain and a significantly wider axial ratio bandwidth when compared to the same antenna without EBG

Process Modeling For Simulation, John Ryan, Cathal Heavey Jan 2006

Process Modeling For Simulation, John Ryan, Cathal Heavey

Articles

This paper discusses shortfalls in relation to the requirements gathering phases of simulation. While many developments have taken place around supporting the model coding task of simulation, there are few tools available to assist in the requirements gathering phase. This is surprising as it has been reported by several researchers that the requirements phase can absorb twice as much resources as the coding phase. There are numerous process modeling tools available (over 100) that can and have been used to support the requirements phase of simulation. This paper provides a selective review of some of the most important in relation …

The Importance Of Family And Community Links For Children In The Out Of Home Care System, David Williams Jan 2006

The Importance Of Family And Community Links For Children In The Out Of Home Care System, David Williams

Articles

Regardless of the exact setting in which the social care worker is involved, be it supporting clients in maintaining their position in the community or assisting clients in making a return to the general community, the maintenance of family and community links are key tools to the achievement of the above identified goals. The role of the parents, family and community in general must not be underestimated if we are to fully meet the needs of the vulnerable people with whom we work. In the following article we will discus the reasons why it is important for social care workers …

Attachment Theory And Wellbeing For The Young Person In Residential Care: The Provision Of A Second Chance Secure Base For The Child In Crisis, Gay Graham Jan 2006

Attachment Theory And Wellbeing For The Young Person In Residential Care: The Provision Of A Second Chance Secure Base For The Child In Crisis, Gay Graham

Articles

Aristotle argued that happiness for humans is not possible in the absence of reciprocal, affective relationships or friendships (Sherman 1991). Such relationships for children are only possible in the context of satisfactory attachments which provide for them a secure base from which to explore their environment (Bowlby 1988). Young people placed in the child welfare system, particularly those in residential care, often experience a system that is problem focused, intent on physical protection and control, where warm reciprocal relationships are not prioritised. This paper states that young people in residential care, whose primary attachments, whatever their quality, have been disrupted; …

Geographic Variation Of Solar Water Heater Performance In Europe, Y. Yohanis, O. Popel, S. Frid, Brian Norton Jan 2006

Geographic Variation Of Solar Water Heater Performance In Europe, Y. Yohanis, O. Popel, S. Frid, Brian Norton

Articles

Solar water heater (SWH) performance has been analysed using the ‘number of days’ method for 147 different sites in all European countries. The total number of days that the temperature of delivered solar heated water reaches or exceeds specified demand temperatures is correlated with solar radiation on a horizontal surface for summer, warm half-year, and whole year periods. Maps are presented and discussed showing the contours for the number of days that an illustrative SWH met different hot water demand temperatures. Correlations between number of days water is provided at a specified temperature and solar fractions for the same periods …

Effects Of Retinal Image Degradation On Pre-Attentive Visual Search (Pavs) Efficiency For Flicker, Movement And Orientation Stimuli, Peter Davison, James Loughman Jan 2006

Effects Of Retinal Image Degradation On Pre-Attentive Visual Search (Pavs) Efficiency For Flicker, Movement And Orientation Stimuli, Peter Davison, James Loughman

Articles

Background: Previous research has shown that several clinical conditions cause increased preattentive visual search (PAVS) times, implying reduced parallel search capabilities in glaucoma and DLB dementia. The purpose of the research reported here was to examine for the first time the resistance of PAVS to dioptric blur using targets differing from the background in terms of flicker, vertical displacement, and orientation. Resistance would enhance the applicability of PAVS as a screening method for glaucoma and other clinical conditions affecting performance of a substantial area of the retina. Method: Computer generated flicker, orientation and vertical displacement targets were used to assess …

Techonology Usage In The Supply Chain: The Case Of Small 3pls, Pietro Evangelista, Edward Sweeney Jan 2006

Techonology Usage In The Supply Chain: The Case Of Small 3pls, Pietro Evangelista, Edward Sweeney

Articles

Purpose - In today’s supply chain management (SCM) practices, a successful strategy depends
increasingly on the performance of Third Party Logistics (3PL) providers as they play a key
integrative role linking the different supply chain elements more effectively. Information and
Communications Technology (ICT) has become an important element of 3PL competitive
capability as it enables higher levels of supply chain integration. Recent industry developments
have widened the technological gap between large and small 3PLs. This is critical particularly for
those markets populated by a large number of small 3PLs such as the Italian logistics industry. The
purpose of this paper …

A Dispatch From The Crypto Wars, A. Michael Froomkin

Articles

Matt Curtin's Brute Force is a primarily personal account of one early effort to harness the power of distributed computing. In 1997, Mr. Curtin and other members of the DESCHALL (DES Challenge) project built, distributed, and managed software that united thousands of computers, many of them ordinary personal computers, in the search for a single decryption key among 72 quadrillion possibilities. The DESCHALL project sought to demonstrate that DES, then the U.S. national standard encryption algorithm, was no longer as secure as advertised. While Brute Force also offers some background on encryption regulation, export control policy, and other aspect of …
