Printed Document Authentication Using Texture Coding, Jonathan Blackledge, Khaled Mahmoud Jan 2009

Printed Document Authentication Using Texture Coding, Jonathan Blackledge, Khaled Mahmoud

Articles

The use of image based information exchange has grown rapidly over the years in terms of both e-to-e image storage and transmission and in terms of maintaining paper documents in electronic form. Further, with the dramatic improvements in the quality of COTS (Commercial-Off-The-Shelf) printing and scanning devices, the ability to counterfeit electronic and printed documents has become a widespread problem. Consequently, there has been an increasing demand to develop digital watermarking techniques which can be applied to both electronic and printed images (and documents) that can be authenticated, prevent unauthorized copying of their content and, in the case of printed …

Counting Triangles In Some Ramsey Graphs, Andrew Lin, John Mackey Jan 2009

Counting Triangles In Some Ramsey Graphs, Andrew Lin, John Mackey

Articles

We extend Goodman’s result on the cardinality of monochromatic triangles in a 2-colored complete graph to the case of bounding the number of triangles in the first color. We apply it to derive the upper bounds on some non-diagonal Ramsey numbers. In particular we show that R(K4 − e,K8) <= 45.

Single Block Attacks And Statistical Tests On Cubehash, Alan Kaminsky, Benjamin Bloom Jan 2009

Single Block Attacks And Statistical Tests On Cubehash, Alan Kaminsky, Benjamin Bloom

Articles

This paper describes a second preimage attack on the CubeHash cryptographic one-way hash function. The attack finds a second preimage in less time than brute force search for these CubeHash variants: CubeHash $r$/$b$-224 for $b > 100$; CubeHash$r$/$b$-256 for $b > 96$; CubeHash$r$/$b$-384 for $b > 80$; and CubeHash$r$/$b$-512 for $b > 64$. However, the attack does not break the CubeHash variants recommended for SHA-3. The attack requires minimal memory and can be performed in a massively parallel fashion. This paper also describes several statistical randomness tests on CubeHash. The tests were unable to disprove the hypothesis that CubeHash behaves as a random mapping. …

Personalization: Data-Driven Print And Internet Communications, Patricia Sorce

Articles

In the three years since the publication of the first edition of “Data-Driven Print,” the media world has continued to change. A tangible example of this change occurred in late 2006, when Time magazine announced their Person of the Year – YOU! This event recognized the growth of user-generated content and the enthusiasm of younger media users in having information “my way.” The growth of the media forms are primarily electronic, including social networking sites, music downloads to cell phones, file sharing, and text messaging. This growth in “new media” has left the mainstream media businesses that provided content—such as …

Alternative Approach For Teaching Multibody Dynamics, George Sutherland Jan 2009

Alternative Approach For Teaching Multibody Dynamics, George Sutherland

Articles

The paper presents an alternative method, the Implicit Constraint Approach (ICA), for developing the equations of motion to describe a system of connected bodies typified by mechanisms and robotic devices. By its simplicity of description and implementation compared to conventional methods, the ICA engages students more in the physics (rather than the mathematics) of the system under study. The ICA enables the direct formation of all needed equations by using only the dynamic equilibrium conditions (in the Newton or Lagrange form). Unlike current approaches, no auxiliary algebraic constraint equations are required. Thus the descriptive equations are ordinary differential equation (ODEs) …

Lessons For Nama From Valuation Practices, Thomas Power Jan 2009

Lessons For Nama From Valuation Practices, Thomas Power

Articles

By adopting accounting values and not economic value, auctioneers and valuers contribute to property market inefficiency. The reaction to this global financial and real asset meltdown is for tighter regulation. But the difficulties now being experienced in global asset markets are not new– it’s just that it is much bigger. The common denominator is accounting based valuations.

Minority Stress And Health: Implications For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Questioning (Lgbtq) Young People, Cathy Kelleher Jan 2009

Minority Stress And Health: Implications For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Questioning (Lgbtq) Young People, Cathy Kelleher

Articles

Historically, the pathologisation of LGBTQ orientations shaped research and professional practice, while the impact of stigma was not considered. Within a minority stress conceptualisation however, stigma-related prejudice and discrimination experienced by LGBTQ people constitute chronically stressful events that can lead to negative health outcomes. Minority stress has been linked to psychological distress among gay men and lesbians and may contribute to elevated rates of distress frequently observed among LGBTQ youth. This study explored the impact of minority stress on psychological distress among LGBTQ youth in Ireland. Measures assessing three components of minority stress (sexual identity distress, stigma consciousness, and heterosexist …

Civil Procedure In Idaho: An Examination Of Significant Differences Between The Rules Of Procedure Of The Idaho State And Federal Courts, Katie Ball Jan 2009

Civil Procedure In Idaho: An Examination Of Significant Differences Between The Rules Of Procedure Of The Idaho State And Federal Courts, Katie Ball

Articles

The University of Idaho College of Law celebrates its centennial this year. The rules of civil procedure do not have that lengthy a history, but they are still a critical part of current legal education and any civil practice. Civil practitioners choosing an Idaho forum have two court system options for many types of cases-the federal courts or the state courts. The goal of this article is to point out the significant differences in the state and federal civil procedural rules for Idaho practitioners. It is meant to particularly address those Idaho attorneys who have practiced primarily or exclusively in …

From Warranted To Valuable Belief: Local Government, Climate Change, And Giving Up The Pickup To Save Bangladesh, Jerrold A. Long

Articles

Although the public discourse about efforts to address global climate change understandably focuses on national- and international-level efforts, in the United States much of the authority for regulating greenhouse gas emitting activities resides with state and local governments. Many local governments have initiated efforts to address global climate change in some fashion. But this article argues that there remains a disconnect between the local causes and global consequences of climate change sufficient to prevent the adoption of durable and effective local efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In other words, individuals remain largely unable to connect their personal decisions with …

The Role Of Information And Communication Technology In Small Italian Logistics Enterprises, Pietro Evangelista, Edward Sweeney Jan 2009

The Role Of Information And Communication Technology In Small Italian Logistics Enterprises, Pietro Evangelista, Edward Sweeney

Articles

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is widely regarded as a key integration enabler in contemporary supply chain configurations. Furthermore, recent years have seen the vertical disintegration of supply chains as increasing numbers of manufacturers and retailers outsource significant parts of their supply chain functionality. In this environment, Third Party Logistics (3PL) providers - the majority of which are small companies - play a pivotal role. This raises important questions about the usage of ICT in this sector. However, there is a paucity of research in the field of small 3PLs with little empirical investigation into the usage of ICT by …

Digital Camera Photographing In Measuring Propagation Loss Properties Of Ion2exchange Planar Optical Waveguides, Ling-Hua Jia, Feng Qiu, Jian Ying, Ti Yun-Jiang, Jie Z|Heng, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell

Articles

The digital photographs of propagation lines of ion-exchange planar glass optical waveguides were taken by a common digital camera.According to the profile of light intensity of propagation lines, the attenuation curves were fitted and the propagation losses of the waveguides were calculated. The waveguides were treated by annealing process, and propagation losses properties were studied before and after annealing, respectively. The results show that the loss of waveguide increases with the mode. The loss in 0 mode decreases from 2.148 9 dB·cm-1 to 0.746 0 dB·cm-1.

Misalignment Limits For A Singlemode-Multimode-Singlemode Fiber-Based Edge Filter, Agus Hatta, Gerald Farrell, Pengfei Wang, Ginu Rajan, Yuliya Semenova Jan 2009

Misalignment Limits For A Singlemode-Multimode-Singlemode Fiber-Based Edge Filter, Agus Hatta, Gerald Farrell, Pengfei Wang, Ginu Rajan, Yuliya Semenova

Articles

Misalignment effects on the spectral characteristics of edge filters based on singlemode–multimode–singlemode (SMS) fibre structures are investigated numerically and experimentally. A modal propagation analysis is used with a set of guided modes calculated using the finite-difference method to determine the transmission loss of the SMS-based edge filters. A limit for the tolerable misalignment of the SMS fiber-based edge filter is proposed, beyond which the spectral performance of the SMS structure degrades unacceptably. The numerical results are verified experimentally with good agreement.

Gun Control After Heller: Threats And Sideshows From A Social Welfare Perspective, Jens Ludwig, Adam M. Samaha, Philip J. Cook Jan 2009

Gun Control After Heller: Threats And Sideshows From A Social Welfare Perspective, Jens Ludwig, Adam M. Samaha, Philip J. Cook

Articles

What will happen after District of Columbia v. Heller? We know that five justices on the Supreme Court now oppose comprehensive federal prohibitions on home handgun possession by some class of trustworthy homeowners for the purpose of, and maybe only at the time of, self-defense. Perhaps the justices will push further and apply Heller's holding to state and local governments via the Fourteenth Amendment. But the majority opinion in Heller offered limited guidance for future cases. It did not follow a purely originalist method of constitutional interpretation, nor did it establish a constraining doctrinal framework for evaluating firearms regulation-although the …

Randomization In Adjudication, Adam M. Samaha Jan 2009

Randomization In Adjudication, Adam M. Samaha

Articles

Flipping a coin to decide a case is among the most serious forms of judicial misconduct. Yet judges react quite differently to other types of lotteries. Judges tend to tolerate or encourage deliberately random decisions in nonjudicial settings ranging from military drafts to experimental welfare requirements. Equally striking, most adjudicators now embrace randomization within their own institutions: they commonly use lotteries to assign incoming cases to each other. This practice creates a remarkable tension. Because adjudicators vary in competence and ideology, randomizing their case assignments will effectively randomize outcomes in a subset of merits decisions. We might then ask whether …

A New Systematic Explanation Of The Types And Mitigating Effects Of Exculpatory Defenses, Jim Staihar Jan 2009

A New Systematic Explanation Of The Types And Mitigating Effects Of Exculpatory Defenses, Jim Staihar

Articles

When someone performs a criminal act, there is a rebuttable presumption that she is particularly blameworthy and liable to a particularly severe punishment for the act. The presumption is rebutted when the criminal actor has an exculpatory defense. Such defenses mitigate how much a criminal actor is blameworthy and liable to be punished for her act. In this paper, I begin by spelling out a taxonomy of the main types of exculpatory defenses. Then I argue that a restorative signaling theory of punitive desert best explains why such defenses have their mitigating effects. According to the theory, how much someone …

The United States, Israel & Unlawful Combatants, Curtis A. Bradley Jan 2009

The United States, Israel & Unlawful Combatants, Curtis A. Bradley

Articles

The Essay considers how members of a terrorist organization should be categorized under international law when the organization is engaged in an armed conflict with a nation. In particular, the essay discusses whether these members can properly be categorized as a type of “combatant” or whether they must instead always be categorized as “civilians.” The proper categorization can have significant implications for the nation’s authority under international law (and potentially also domestic law) to subject members of a terrorist organization to military targeting and detention. The United States and Israel currently have different legal approaches to the question, and the …

Foreign Officials And Sovereign Immunity In U.S. Courts, Curtis A. Bradley Jan 2009

Foreign Officials And Sovereign Immunity In U.S. Courts, Curtis A. Bradley

Articles

The Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act (FSIA) provides that foreign states shall be immune from the jurisdiction of U.S. courts unless the suit falls within a specified statutory exception to immunity. There is currently a conflict among the federal circuit courts over whether suits against individual foreign officials are covered by the FSIA. If such suits are not covered by the FSIA, additional questions are raised concerning a possible common law immunity for foreign officials. This Insight describes both the conflict and the additional questions.
