Imi—Nonpathological Human Ocular Tissue Changes With Axial Myopia, Jost B. Jonus, Richard F. Spaide, Lisa A. Ostrin, Nicola S. Logan, Daniel Ian Flitcroft, Songhomitra Panda-Jonas Jan 2023

Imi—Nonpathological Human Ocular Tissue Changes With Axial Myopia, Jost B. Jonus, Richard F. Spaide, Lisa A. Ostrin, Nicola S. Logan, Daniel Ian Flitcroft, Songhomitra Panda-Jonas

Articles

In axial myopia, the eye changes from a spherical shape to a prolate ellipsoid, photoreceptor, and retinal pigment epithelium cell density and total retinal thickness decrease, most marked in the retroequatorial region, followed by the equator. The choroid and sclera are thin, most markedly at the posterior pole and least markedly at the ora serrata. The sclera undergoes alterations in fibroblast activity, changes in extracellular matrix content, and remodeling. Bruch’s membrane (BM) thickness is unrelated to axial length, although the BM volume increases. In moderate myopia, the BM opening shifts, usually toward the fovea, leading to the BM overhanging into …

Myopia is a dynamic and rapidly moving field, with ongoing research providing a better understanding of the etiology leading to novel myopia control strategies. In 2019, the International Myopia Institute (IMI) assembled and published a series of white papers across relevant topics and updated the evidence with a digest in 2021. Here, we summarize findings across key topics from the previous 2 years. Studies in animal models have continued to explore how wavelength and intensity of light influence eye growth and have examined new pharmacologic agents and scleral cross-linking as potential strategies for slowing myopia. In children, the term premyopia …

Modification Of Hyaluronic Acid To Enable Click Chemistry Photo-Crosslinking Of Hydrogels With Tailorable Degradation Profiles, Ciara Buckley Jan 2023

Modification Of Hyaluronic Acid To Enable Click Chemistry Photo-Crosslinking Of Hydrogels With Tailorable Degradation Profiles, Ciara Buckley

Articles

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring mucopolysaccharide that, due to its inherent bioactivity and extracellular matrix-like structure, has the potential to be utilised extensively in tissue engineering. However, this glycosaminoglycan lacks the properties required for cellular adhesion and photo-crosslinking by UV light, which significantly hinders this polymers applicability. This research presents a method for modifying hyaluronic acid via thiolation and methacrylation to generate a novel photo-crosslinkable polymer with improved physicochemical properties, biocompatibility and the potential to customize biodegradability according to the ratio of monomers used. A decrease in stiffness proportional to increasing thiol concentration was observed when testing the …

The Use Of Transport Time Scales As Indicators Of Pollution Persistence In A Macro-Tidal Setting, Guanghai Gao, John J. O'Sullivan, Aisling Corkery, Zeinab Bedri, Gregory M.P. O'Hare, Wim G. Meijer

Articles

An understanding of water exchange processes is essential for assessing water quality management issues in coastal bays. This paper evaluates the impact of water exchange processes on pollution persistence in a macro-tidal semi-closed coastal bay through two transport time scales (TTS), namely residence time and exposure time. The numerical model was calibrated against field-measured data for various tidal conditions. Simulated current speeds and directions were shown to agree well with the field data. By considering different release scenarios of a conservative tracer by the refinement of an integrated hydrodynamic and solute transport model (the EFDC), the two TTS were used …

Use Of Inner/Outer Sphere Terminology In Electrochemistry—A Hexacyanoferrate Ii/Iii Case Study, John Cassidy, Rafaela Cristina De Carvalho, Tony Betts Jan 2023

Use Of Inner/Outer Sphere Terminology In Electrochemistry—A Hexacyanoferrate Ii/Iii Case Study, John Cassidy, Rafaela Cristina De Carvalho, Tony Betts

Articles

Salts of hexacyanoferrate II/III anions have been widely used as redox couple probe molecules to determine the characteristics of electrode surfaces. Examples include the assessment of electrocatalysts for energy applications and electrocatalysts for the detection of biological or chemical species, as well as the determination of electrochemically active surface areas. An examination of the electrochemical literature, based largely on cyclic voltammetric investigations, reveals a wide range of peak separation and/or heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants, classified sometimes as inner or outer sphere electron transfer processes. Originally developed for the mechanistic interpretation of inorganic transition metal compounds in solution, this terminology …

Articles

Mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR), and Raman spectroscopy are all well-established analytical techniques in biomedical applications. Since they provide complementary chemical information, we aimed to determine whether combining them amplifies their strengths and mitigates their weaknesses. This study investigates the feasibility of the fusion of MIR, NIR, and Raman spectroscopic data for characterising articular cartilage integrity. Osteochondral specimens from bovine patellae were subjected to mechanical and enzymatic damage, and then MIR, NIR, and Raman data were acquired from the damaged and control specimens. We assessed the capacity of individual spectroscopic methods to classify the samples into damage or control …

Review Of The International Play Policies And Their Contribution To Supporting A Child's Right To Play, Fiona Armstrong, David Gaul Jan 2023

Review Of The International Play Policies And Their Contribution To Supporting A Child's Right To Play, Fiona Armstrong, David Gaul

Articles

Play is recognised as a fundamental children's right protected by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Despite legal and constitutional requirements for ensuring children's right to play, there are few international policies dedicated to play. This paper seeks to use a critical discourse analysis lens to compare the current international policies dedicated to play and identify examples of good practice and perceived barriers to the successful development and implementation of play policies.

The effect of operational parameters such as feed rate (FR), drum speed (DS), and concave clearance (CC) was studied on the performance of a pearling drum. The pearling drum consists of pearling cylinder, pearling sieve, concave, and outer casing of the drum. The response surface method with CCRD experimental design was used to study the effect of operational parameters on pearling drum. The considered levels for optimizing operational parameters viz., FR, DS, and CC were 40–80 kg/h, 5– 10 m/s, and 3–15 mm, respectively. The maximum pearling efficiency (PE) and minimum grain damage (GD) were found to be 98.40%, and …

Memorizing Trade Secrets, Timothy Murphy Jan 2023

Memorizing Trade Secrets, Timothy Murphy

Articles

The earliest trade secret cases recognized that remembered information raised unique issues in trade secret misappropriation claims. However, courts struggled with exactly how to address remembered information, as opposed to information taken in tangible form. The modern trend, according to one case from the Washington Supreme Court, is to ignore the distinction and treat remembered information the same as information taken in tangible form for purposes of trade secret misappropriation claims. However, this case may have prematurely signaled the demise of remembered information's relevance to a trade secret claim. Particularly during the pandemic era, where increased employee mobility is placing …

The Law Of The Sea And Democracy, Tom Ginsburg Jan 2023

The Law Of The Sea And Democracy, Tom Ginsburg

Articles

The law of the sea is not an area of international law generally associated with democracy. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) is one of the world’s most broadly accepted and effective treaties, incorporating all kinds of States. The central cleavages among these states— coastal vs. maritime powers, developing countries vs. industrialized nations, landlocked vs. those with access to the seas—have only coincidental links to the global division of democracy and dictatorship. Yet, the law of the sea has surprising connections with democracy in that democratic states are enthusiastic users of the UNCLOS system. Furthermore, …

Nonparty Interests In Contract Law, Omri Ben-Shahar, David Hoffman, Cathy Hwang Jan 2023

Nonparty Interests In Contract Law, Omri Ben-Shahar, David Hoffman, Cathy Hwang

Articles

Contract law has one overarching goal: to advance the legitimate interests of the contracting parties. For the most part, scholars, judges, and parties embrace this party primacy norm, recognizing only a few exceptions, such as mandatory rules that bar enforcement of agreements that harm others. This Article describes a distinct species of previously unnoticed contract law rules that advance nonparty interests, which it calls “nonparty defaults.”

In doing so, this Article makes three contributions to the contract law literature. First, it identifies nonparty defaults as a judicial technique. It shows how courts deviate from the party primacy norm with surprising …

Recognizing the major scholarly contributions to criminology by the noted Irish criminologist, Ian O’Donnell, The Prison Journal invited seven contemporary corrections and punishment scholars to offer insights into O’Donnell’s new book, Prison Life: Pain, Resistance, and Purpose. Offering contextually rich descriptions of prisoner life, the text features four case study prisons—H Blocks, Northern Ireland; Eastham Unit, Texas; Isir Bet, Ethiopia; and ADX Florence, Colorado, in pivotal time periods and through an individual's custodial career in each institution. The symposium discussants focus on O’Donnell's conceptual framework—the degree of prison integration, system and staff regulation, and legitimacy—and how these reflect the key …

Maintaining Connections During The Pandemic: Rural Arts Festivals And Digital Practices, Enya Moore, Bernadette Quinn Jan 2023

Maintaining Connections During The Pandemic: Rural Arts Festivals And Digital Practices, Enya Moore, Bernadette Quinn

Articles

During the COVID lockdowns of 2020/21, the transmission of live or recorded concerts grew exponentially as festival makers embraced digital technologies to a greater degree. Investigating how this digital pivot interrupted festival-making practices is now important given that online and hybrid modes will potentially be used in conjunction with in-person events in the future. This task has relevance for rural areas where digital infrastructures can be under-developed. Yet, place-based, community-organised festivals can play a significant role in sustaining local communities. In this context, we explore the recent digital programming practices of music festivals in West Cork, Ireland. Methodologically, the study …

Finally, It Seems To Be Working – The Evolving Valuation Effect Of The European Union’S Emissions Trading System, Benjamin Lynch, Martha O'Hagan-Luff

Articles

This research examines the market reaction to the publication of firm-specific environmental news for participating firms in the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) during its third phase. Our sample of 123 publicly listed participating firms, located in 21 European countries, accounted for 45.43% of emissions in the EU ETS in 2020. Using an event study methodology during the period 2014–2021, we find that positive news was rewarded with increased returns for publication events related to the latter years of the phase (2017–2020) while it had an insignificant impact for earlier year (2013–2016). This indicates that the EU ETS …

Rulemaking 3.0: Incorporating Ai And Chatgpt Into Notice And Comment Rulemaking, Stephen M. Johnson

Articles

Technological innovations since the turn of the century have created opportunities to increase public participation in notice and comment rulemaking, increase the efficiency of the process, and increase the quality of the rules adopted by agencies. For some rules, online rulemaking and social media have facilitated increased public participation, but have not necessarily facilitated improvements in the quality of public comments. In addition, in some cases, the transformation of the process has created new challenges for government agencies by making it easier for supporters or opponents of rules to flood agencies with duplicative and potentially false comments to which the …

Residents Against Housing: A Response To Professor Infranca’S ‘Differentiating Exclusionary Tendencies’, Lee Anne Fennell Jan 2023

Residents Against Housing: A Response To Professor Infranca’S ‘Differentiating Exclusionary Tendencies’, Lee Anne Fennell

Articles

Incumbent residents routinely oppose residential development.1 Interestingly, this is true of both homeowners and renters, if for opposite reasons. Homeowners typically worry that new housing will cause the market value of their own homes to fall, resulting in a hit to what is usually a house-heavy personal wealth portfolio.2 Tenants typically worry that new housing will cause the market value of their own homes to rise, generating pressure toward higher rents and displacement.3 Both homeowners and tenants also express concern that new housing development will change the character of their neighborhoods in unwanted ways.4

Resident opposition …

Democracy's Other Boundary Problem: The Law Of Democratic Disqualification, Tom Ginsburg, Aziz Huq, David Landau Jan 2023

Democracy's Other Boundary Problem: The Law Of Democratic Disqualification, Tom Ginsburg, Aziz Huq, David Landau

Articles

Almost all national constitutions contain one or more ways to disqualify specific individuals from political office. Indeed, the U.S. Constitution incorporates at least four overlapping pathways toward disqualification. This power of disqualifying specific individuals or groups stands at the heart of the complex project of maintaining democratic rule. In practice, disqualification can work both as an instrument for preserving democratic rule and also as a knife against it. This Article is the first to systematically analyze the complex positive and normative questions raised by disqualification. We offer both a positive account of the function that disqualification plays in constitutional ordering …

Personal Jurisdiction’S Moment Of Opportunity: A Reform Blueprint For Originalists And Nonoriginalists, Allan Erbsen Jan 2023

Personal Jurisdiction’S Moment Of Opportunity: A Reform Blueprint For Originalists And Nonoriginalists, Allan Erbsen

Articles

Personal jurisdiction doctrine is broken, but there is a moment of opportunity to repair it. The Supreme Court has struggled for decades to explain why constitutional law sometimes prevents states from providing local remedies for local injuries. Basic questions lack satisfying answers. Should doctrine emphasize liberty or federalism? Is the Due Process Clause the proper foundation for limits on state power or are other clauses more relevant? What harms should limits on state power prevent and what harms should limits avoid creating? Decisions addressing these questions rely on jargon rather than a coherent account of how to allocate jurisdictional power …

State Responsibility For Human Rights Violations Perpetrated In The Name Of International Counter-Terrorism Financing Obligations, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin

Articles

This Essay responds to the increasing adoption by States across continents of repressive, over-reaching laws, regulations, and policies aimed at countering the financing of terrorism. It documents the immense international pressure to adopt counter-terrorism financing measures, coupled with the seeming marginalization of concurrent international human rights law obligations. The Essay first sets out the applicable legal framework and rapid normative developments in international counter-terrorism financing law. Second, the Essay provides a snapshot of existing allegations of human rights violations committed in the name of international counter-terrorism financing obligations, including judicial harassment and undue surveillance of human rights defenders and civil …

Theorizing International Business In Africa: A Roadmap, Paul Vaaler Jan 2023

Theorizing International Business In Africa: A Roadmap, Paul Vaaler

Articles

International business in Africa is complicated by colonial history, late internationalization, and the growing interest of various foreign powers in Africa and its resources. We share key indicators about African countries and offer a conceptual map to help make sense of this complex scholarly terrain. We distinguish between three types of multinational enterprises (MNEs) operating in sub-Saharan Africa: Advanced MNEs (from high-income previous colonial and non-colonial countries), Emerging MNEs (from middle-income countries both inside and outside the region) and Nascent MNEs (from low-income African countries). We show how these distinct types of MNEs provide different development opportunities, how they engage …

An Empirical Constitutional Crisis: When Magistrate Judges Exercise De Facto Article Iii Power, Edward Adams Jan 2023

An Empirical Constitutional Crisis: When Magistrate Judges Exercise De Facto Article Iii Power, Edward Adams

Articles

Magistrate judges within the United States district court system have historically been viewed as a means to alleviate the large caseloads faced by district court judges. Magistrate judges issue Reports and Recommendations (R&Rs), wherein they detail the underlying facts, analyze relevant legal issues, and outline a proposed order for district court judges to follow. While district court judges may reject or modify R&Rs submitted to them, district court judges overwhelmingly adopt R&Rs, even after a purportedly de novo determination. In doing so, this Article posits that constitutionally-appointed district court judges are abrogating their Article III constitutionally required role to magistrate …

Process As Suffering: How U.S. Immigration Court Process And Culture Prevent Substantive Justice, Christopher Levesque, Kimberly Horner, Linus Chan Jan 2023

Process As Suffering: How U.S. Immigration Court Process And Culture Prevent Substantive Justice, Christopher Levesque, Kimberly Horner, Linus Chan

Articles

In this article, we argue that there is a form of double punishment unique to the immigration court system that attorneys and their noncitizen clients must navigate throughout changing political contexts. The first form of punishment is the court process during removal proceedings, and the second form of punishment is removal from the United States. Our interviews with removal defense attorneys in the U.S. Upper Midwest illustrate how these punishments intersect with one another and push attorneys to adopt strategies that may not lead to winning a case, but intend to protect their clients by losing as slowly as possible. …

Isolated Effects Of Footwear Structure And Cushioning On Running Mechanics In Habitual Mid/Forefoot Runners, A.H Gruber, Joe Warne, J. Hamill Jan 2023

Isolated Effects Of Footwear Structure And Cushioning On Running Mechanics In Habitual Mid/Forefoot Runners, A.H Gruber, Joe Warne, J. Hamill

Articles

The true differences between barefoot and shod running are difficult to directly compare 2 because of the concomitant change to a mid/forefoot footfall pattern that typically occurs 3 during barefoot running. The purpose of this study was to compare isolated effects of footwear 4 structure and cushioning on running mechanics in habitual mid/forefoot runners running shod 5 (SHOD), barefoot (BF), and barefoot on a foam surface (BF+FOAM). Ten habitually shod 6 mid/forefoot runners were recruited (male=8, female=2). Repeated measures ANOVA 7 (α=0.05) revealed differences between conditions for only vertical peak active force, contact 8 time, negative and total ankle joint …
