How To Successfully Create And Sustain A Vibrant Apics Student Chapter, Jack Cook Jan 2002

How To Successfully Create And Sustain A Vibrant Apics Student Chapter, Jack Cook

Articles

Starting a successful student chapter is not easy. It requires the right mix of support from the parent chapter, academic liaison, faculty advisor, college administration, and students. Most APICS student chapters are struggling with few (less than 10) student members and even fewer activities that encourage student membership as well as ties with local APICS chapters. It is possible to create and sustain a vibrant student chapter given these tried and tested guidelines provided in this paper.

Recent Trends In Global And Irish Tourism, Kevin Griffin Jan 2002

Recent Trends In Global And Irish Tourism, Kevin Griffin

Articles

2001 will long be remembered as one of the most difficult years for tourism in Ireland. The outbreak of Food and Mouth disease in the first half of the year was seen as a major blow to the industry, with many businesses suffering from the resultant restrictions on travel. These problems were further increased by the global effects of the economic slow-down in the USA. As the sector began to recover and was shaping up for a healthy Autumn, the terrorist attacks of September 11 devastated the industry globally, with knock–on effects which are only now beginning to be assessed. …

Measured Interpretation: Introducing The Method Of Correspondence Analysis To Legal Studies, Bernard E. Harcourt Jan 2002

Measured Interpretation: Introducing The Method Of Correspondence Analysis To Legal Studies, Bernard E. Harcourt

Articles

Professor Harcourt develops and advocates a method to more rigorously measure and evaluate how qualitative "social meaning" variables relate to legal practices and public policies. The method integrates in-depth qualitative interviews with an experimental free associational component, map analysis of the interviews, and a methodology, correspondence analysis, that remains little known in the United States despite its acceptance in other parts of the world. Correspondence analysis, according to Professor Harcourt, is a tool that allows researchers to visually represent the relationship between structures of social meaning and the contexts and practices within which they are embedded. This method opens up …

Global It/Is Outsourcing: Expectations, Considerations And Implications, Qiyang Chen, Qiang Tu, Binshan Lin

Articles

This paper discusses the issues of global IT/IS outsourcing from four interrelated aspects: forming an appropriate global IT strategy, using proper global IT platforms, managing international data sharing, and surviving the cultural environment. It aims at providing a comprehensive framework for both the global outsourcing providers and clients to fully understand and evaluate the expectations, considerations and implications of global IT/IS outsourcing, so that they can form a successful long-term strategic alliance.

The Sustainability Of Sustainable Consumption, Paddy Dolan Jan 2002

The Sustainability Of Sustainable Consumption, Paddy Dolan

Articles

This article examines the limitations of the concept of sustainable consumption in terms of the inadequate attention given to the social, cultural and historical contextualization of consumption. I argue that Macromarketing should adopt modes of inquiry that more fully engage with this contextualization. The implicit assumptions of ‘sustainable consumption’ center on the rational individual and his or her needs and wants, and neglect the significance of consumption practices as embodying the relations between individuals. Acts of consumption are not in opposition to, and prior to, macro structures and processes, they are macro processes at work. Consumer practices are cultural and …

New Product Development (Npd) Simulations: Some Challenging Questions And Tough Modeling Issues, Victor Perotti, Thomas Pray Jan 2002

New Product Development (Npd) Simulations: Some Challenging Questions And Tough Modeling Issues, Victor Perotti, Thomas Pray

Articles

The purpose of this paper is to raise some very challenging questions about how to model new product development (NPD) issues in a computerized business simulation. Initially, we briefly review some of the key issues found in the NPD literature, framing each one as a question that challenges new product managers. The paper then addresses how a designer might model these questions in a strategy-oriented game that will include NPD elements. The overall purpose is to start an open forum whereby modelers could discuss and brainstorm contemporary business issues that warrant modeling into competitive business games.

Imaging At The National Gallery Of Art, Washington D.C., Francisco Imai, Lawrence Taplin, David Day

Articles

This report provides the description of a recent fine art spectral imaging session at the National Gallery of Art, Washington D. C. This report also includes subsequent evaluation of the performance of our multi-channel visible-spectral imaging (MVSI) system. The multi-band channels analyzed in this report were obtained using a monochrome CCD and a liquid-crystal tunable filter (LCTF) capturing 31 narrow-band channels. The results showed the effectiveness of our designed spectral imaging when used at a museum environment to capture spectral imaging of fine art paintings. Furthermore, we also verified the dependence of the performance on the selection of the characterization …

Comparison Of The Accuracy Of Various Transformations From Multi-Band Images To Reflectance Spectra, Francisco Imai, Lawrence Taplin, Ellen Day

Articles

This report provides a comparative study of the spectral and colorimetric accuracy of various transformations from multi-band digital signals to spectral reflectance. The multiband channels were obtained by multi-channel visible-spectral imaging (MVSI) using a monochrome CCD and two different filtering systems. In the first system we used a liquid-crystal tunable filter (LCTF) capturing 31 narrow-band channels. We also used a filter wheel with a set of 6 glass filters imaging with and without an extra Wratten absorption filter giving a total of 12 channels. Four different mathematical methods were tested to derive reflectance spectra from digital signals: pseudo-inverse, eigenvector analysis, …

Tournaments With A Transitive Subtournament As A Feedback Arc Set, Jennifer Baldwin, William Kronholm, Darren Narayan Jan 2002

Tournaments With A Transitive Subtournament As A Feedback Arc Set, Jennifer Baldwin, William Kronholm, Darren Narayan

Articles

Given an acyclic digraph D, we seek a smallest sized tournament T that has D as a minimum feedback arc set. The reversing number of a digraph is defined to be r(D) = |V (T)|−|V (D)| . The case where D is a tournament Tn was studied by Isaak in 1995 using an integer linear programming formulation. In particular, this approach was used to produce lower bounds for r(Tn), and it was conjectured that the given bounds were tight. We examine the class of tournaments where n = 2k +2k−2 and show the known lower bounds for r(Tn) are best …

Balancing Localization And Globalization: Exploring The Impact Of Globalization On An Opto/Photonics Cluster, Richard De Martino, David Reid, Stelios Zyglidopoulos

Articles

This paper reports the finds of an exploration study on the impact of globalization on regional industrial clusters. The past decade has witnessed the popularization of two somewhat contradictory trends in geographical competitiveness: the importance of localization and globalization. This paper reports the preliminary findings of research conducted on the internationalization of the optics/photonics clusters based in Rochester, NY. Twenty-two senior executives were interviewed, face-to-face. Using content analysis combined with a grounded theory influenced approached the texts of these interviews were appraised. A number of salient findings emerged regarding relationships among localization, internationalization, and firm capacity.

A recent trend in so-called "second generation" legal commentary about the Internet suggests that, though it is an unparalleled communication medium and a means of engaging in global e-commerce, it is not an unmitigated force for good. Instead, the Net poses a fundamental danger to democracy. This trend takes shape in works by well-known cyberlaw theorists like Lawrence Lessig, Andrew Shapiro, and Neil Weinstock Netanel, but the most recent and most troubling criticism lies in Professor Cass Sunstein 's Republic.com. In this book, Professor Sunstein argues that perfect filtering of information on the Internet will lead to a fractured communications …

A Computational Approach For The Ramsey Numbers R(C_4, K_N), Stanislaw Radziszowski, Kung-Kuen Tse Jan 2002

A Computational Approach For The Ramsey Numbers R(C_4, K_N), Stanislaw Radziszowski, Kung-Kuen Tse

Articles

For graphs G and H, the Ramsey number R(G,H) is the least integer n such that every 2-coloring of the edges of K_n contains a subgraph isomorphic to G in the first color or a subgraph isomorphic to H in the second color. Graph G is a (C_4, K_n)-graph if G doesn't contain a cycle C_4 and G has no independent set of order n. Jayawardene and Rousseau showed that 21 < = R(C_4,K_7) < = 22. In this work we determine R(C_4, K_7) = 22 and R(C_4,K_8) = 26, and enumerate various families of (C_4, K_n)-graphs. In particular, we construct all (C_4, K_n)-graphs for n < 7, and all (C_4,K_7)-graphs on at least 19 vertices. Most of the results are based on computer algorithms.

Business-To-Business (B2b) Trade Exchanges: Current Marketplace Information Flow, Jack Cook Jan 2002

Business-To-Business (B2b) Trade Exchanges: Current Marketplace Information Flow, Jack Cook

Articles

Marketplace communication channels in most industries are complicated by the presence of thousands of buyers and sellers maintaining business-to-business (B2B) relationships with one another. The conglomeration of these channels has produced an intricate network of unique relationships between these partners that simulataneously encourages inefficient, non-standardized, information-flow transaction platforms. Through trading partners such a sales representatives, brokers, or distributors, "Buyer A" maintains a unique business relationship with each of its suppliers (see Figure 1). For every transaction process conducted between "Buyer A" and its respective supplier, a different means of communication may be utilized (Girishankar).
