One-Way Permutations And Self-Witnessing Languages, Christopher Homan, Mayur Thakur Jan 2003

One-Way Permutations And Self-Witnessing Languages, Christopher Homan, Mayur Thakur

Articles

A desirable property of one-way functions is that they be total, one-to-one, and onto—in other words, that they be permutations. We prove that one-way permutations exist exactly if PaUP-coUP: This provides the first characterization of the existence of one-way permutations based on a complexity-class separation and shows that their existence is equivalent to a number of previously studied complexity theoretic hypotheses. We study permutations in the context of witness functions of nondeterministic Turing machines. A language is in PermUP if, relative to some unambiguous, nondeterministic, polynomial-time Turing machine accepting the language, the function mapping each string to its unique witness …

Knowledge Content And Worker Participation In Environmental Management At Nummi, Sandra Rothenberg Jan 2003

Knowledge Content And Worker Participation In Environmental Management At Nummi, Sandra Rothenberg

Articles

This paper looks at, within the context of lean production, how and in what ways employees participative work structures, New United Motor Manufacturing (NUMMI), to look more closely at the dynamics of worker participation in environmental management (i.e. management of pollution and waste). Finding show that while workers possess important contextual knowledge, the importance of process, intra-organizational and external knowledge make the role of specialist staff (both internal and external to the environmental function) critically important for environmental improvements. Additionally, environmental improvements often required a combination of more than one knowledge type. The paper discusses how the culture and management …

New Evidence On The Market For Directors: Board Membership And Pennsylvania Senate Bill 1310, Jeffrey Coles, Chun-Keung Hoi Jan 2003

New Evidence On The Market For Directors: Board Membership And Pennsylvania Senate Bill 1310, Jeffrey Coles, Chun-Keung Hoi

Articles

We examine the relation between a board's decision to reject antitakeover provisions of Pennsylvania Senate Bill 1310 and subsequent labor market opportunities of those same board members. Compared to directors retaining all provisions, directors rejecting all protective provisions of SB1310 are three times as likely to gain additional external directorships and are 30 percent more likely to retain their internal slot on the board of that same Pennsylvania company. For external board seats, the results are driven by nonexecutive directors who are not members of the management team; for internal board seats, the results are driven by executive directors.

Pictorial Offset Corporation: Simultaneous Iso 9002 And 14001 Registration, Sandra Rothenberg, Monica Becker Jan 2003

Pictorial Offset Corporation: Simultaneous Iso 9002 And 14001 Registration, Sandra Rothenberg, Monica Becker

Articles

Pictorial Offset Corporation was the first company in the world to obtain simultaneous certification for ISO 9002 and 14001 in 1998 and ISO 9001 and 14001 in 2002. This family-owned and operated lithographic printer in Carlstadt, New Jersey traces its history back to 1938, and operated with more than an average level of environmental concern for a firm at that time. In the 1980s, however, what began with a straightforward examination of how chemicals were used in the firm ended with an acute understanding of the links between environmental management, wast generation and the bottom line. While most firms adopting …

The Impact Of Technostress On Role Stress And Productivity, Monideepa Tarafdar, Qiang Tu, T.S. Ragu-Nathan Jan 2003

The Impact Of Technostress On Role Stress And Productivity, Monideepa Tarafdar, Qiang Tu, T.S. Ragu-Nathan

Articles

Based on empirical survey data, this paper uses concepts from sociotechnical theory and role theory to explore the effects of stress created by informatino and computer technology (ICT) - that is, "technostress" - on role stress and on stress in user and identify factors that creat technostress. We next propose three hypotheses: (1) technostress is inversely related to individual productivity, (2) role stress is inversely related to individual productivity, and (3) technostress is directly related to role stress. We then use strucutral equation modeling on survey data from ICT users in 223 organizations to test the hypotheses. The results show …

Symbols, Practices And Myth-Making: Cultural Perspectives On The Wexford Festival Opera, Bernadette Quinn Jan 2003

Symbols, Practices And Myth-Making: Cultural Perspectives On The Wexford Festival Opera, Bernadette Quinn

Articles

In recent decades geographers have paid increasing attention to festivals. They have construed festivals as important practices through which people connect with their place and as authored landscapes designed to promote particular sets of values and attach specific meanings to place. Tourism influences the processes and dynamics ongoing in festival settings and this paper seeks to unravel some of the complex ways in which it influences the reproduction of cultural meanings there. It draws on research conducted on the Wexford Festival Opera in the Republic of Ireland and analyses the symbolism, practices and meanings found to be associated with the …

From Edison To The Broadcast Flag: Mechanisms Of Consent And Refusal And The Propertization Of Copyright, Randal C. Picker Jan 2003

From Edison To The Broadcast Flag: Mechanisms Of Consent And Refusal And The Propertization Of Copyright, Randal C. Picker

Articles

Negligence law is built around the paradigmatic case of a person who unreasonably preferred his own interests to those of others and, as a result, caused damage to another person. However, this case is not representative of all instances of negligence. In some cases, the negligent injurer failed in balancing between the interests of the victim alone; in other cases, he failed in balancing between the victim's interests and those of a third party; sometimes the injurer failed in balancing the victim's interests and the interests of the public or of society as a whole; and in yet other instances, …

The Spatially Averaged Electric Field In The Near Field And Far Field Of A Circular Aperture, Charles Daly, Todd Nuteson, Navalgund Rao Jan 2003

The Spatially Averaged Electric Field In The Near Field And Far Field Of A Circular Aperture, Charles Daly, Todd Nuteson, Navalgund Rao

Articles

This paper presents a theoretical and numerical investigation of the spatially averaged electric field in the beam of a circular aperture. The investigation leads to closed-form analytical expressions, based on scalar diffraction theory, which describe the spatially averaged electric field in the Fresnel region of a circular aperture excited by a spatially uniform, harmonic plane wave. The expressions ultimately permit rapid, practical, and efficient prediction of certain routine electromagnetic measurements. Because the expressions are valid in the Fresnel region, they are also valid in the near field, the far field, and the Fraunhofer region of a circular aperture. In fact, …

A Process For Synthesizing Bandlimited Chaotic Waveforms For Digital Signal Transmission, Chance Glenn

Articles

In our development of a chaotic oscillator technology to produce high-quality communication signals, we have found a novel method for limiting the out-of-band spectral power from chaotic oscillators. This development is an important breakthrough that has allowed us to make a major step toward a commercially viable technology.

An Examination Of Financial Integration For The Group Of Seven (G7) Industrialized Countries Using An I(2) Conintegration Model, A Tahai, Robert Rutledge, Khondkar Karim Jan 2003

An Examination Of Financial Integration For The Group Of Seven (G7) Industrialized Countries Using An I(2) Conintegration Model, A Tahai, Robert Rutledge, Khondkar Karim

Articles

This study investigates financial cointegration of G7 equity markets. The term 'international stock market integration' refers to an area of research in financial economics that covers many different aspects of the interrelationships across equity markets. The cointegration of order tow model, 1(2), that was developed by Johansen is used to specify potential cointegration structure. The empirical validity of this economic model is investigated by employing monthly stock indexes of the Group of Seven (G7) from March 1978 through December 1997 on Morgan Stanley's Capital International (MSCI) indices. This monthly time series data is used to estimate the vector error correction …

Strategic Implications Of Technological Innovation That Is Hard To Sell, Stephen Luxmore, Ken Shaw Jan 2003

Strategic Implications Of Technological Innovation That Is Hard To Sell, Stephen Luxmore, Ken Shaw

Articles

During the last decade the biotechnology industry has made remarkable scientific advancement. It is reasonable to surmise that in addition to corporate and personal goals, an intended outcome of biotechnological research is to benefit society. Yet how should companies react in the face of public scrutiny and often-resulting mistrust for technological innovation? This paper examines the strategic implications of researching, developing and bringing to market technology that is hard to sell. Specifically, we explore the application of technology to genetically modified crops in the agricultural industry.

An Upper Bound For The Representation Number Of Graphs With Fixed Order, Darren Narayan Jan 2003

An Upper Bound For The Representation Number Of Graphs With Fixed Order, Darren Narayan

Articles

A graph has a representation modulo n if there exists an injective map f: {V(G)} -> {0, 1, ... , n @ 1} such that vertices u and v are adjacent if and only if |f(u)@f(v)| is relatively prime to n. The representation number is the smallest n such that G has a representation modulo n. We seek the maximum value for the representation number over graphs of a fixed order. Erdos and Evans provided an upper bound in their proof that every finite graph can be represented modulo some positive integer. In this note we improve this bound and …

On The Equivalences Of The Wheel W5, The Prism P And The Bipyramid B5, Hossein Shahmohamad Jan 2003

On The Equivalences Of The Wheel W5, The Prism P And The Bipyramid B5, Hossein Shahmohamad

Articles

The main results of this paper are the discovery of infinite families of flow equivalent pairs of B5 and W5 amallamorphs and infinite families of chromatically equivalent pairs of P and W*5 homeomorphs, where B5 is K5 with one edge deleted, P is the Prism graph and W5 is the join of K1 and a cycle on 4 vertices. Six families of B5 amallamorphs, with two families having 6 parameters, and 9 families of W5 amallamorphs, with one family having 4 parameters, are discovered. Since B5 and W5 are both planar, all these results obtained can be stated in terms …
