The Cosmological Question: A Response To Milner S. Ball's 'All The Company Of Heaven', Joseph Vining Jan 1996

The Cosmological Question: A Response To Milner S. Ball's 'All The Company Of Heaven', Joseph Vining

Articles

We do not disagree, and I do not doubt, that legal processes are sources of injustice, violent oppression, crushing of the spirit, destruction of lives, actual death. I have only to look at The Trial1 again. Nor do we disagree that there are strings of words, statements, put out by officials, lawyers, and lawyer-academics, often called "rules," that cannot be taken into oneself and that by their very nature evoke manipulation in response, avoidance if they cannot be ignored. In their name violent imposition of pure will occurs all the time, and power is exercised by those who can secure …

On Transitive And Fully Transitive Abelian P-Groups, D. Carroll, Brendan Goldsmith Jan 1996

On Transitive And Fully Transitive Abelian P-Groups, D. Carroll, Brendan Goldsmith

Articles

It is a long standing problem of A.L.S. Corner as to whether there exists a non-transitive fully transitive Abelian p-group with finite Ulm subgroups. The principal result of this paper shows that no such group exists for a special class of p-groups if the Ulm subjgroup is the direct sum of two cyclic groups. Some results on summands of trnsitive and fully transitive groups are obtained.

Rotating Disk Ion Selective Electrodes, John Cassidy, David Mullen, Karen Casey, Patrick Cullen Jan 1996

Rotating Disk Ion Selective Electrodes, John Cassidy, David Mullen, Karen Casey, Patrick Cullen

Articles

A simulation was undertaken to predict the transient potential response following a concentration step at a rotating disk electrode comprised of an ion selective layer. A basis for this simulation was that the potential response would be independent of rotation rate since the diffusion layer is larger than the double layer at the electrode. In practice it was found that the potential response does vary with rotation rate. The response was such that the apparent concentration of the analyte in solution decreased with increased rotation rate. The reason for this behavior is due to the disruption of the double layer …

Theorists' Belief: A Comment On The Moral Tradition Of American Constitutionalism, Jospeh Vining Jan 1996

Theorists' Belief: A Comment On The Moral Tradition Of American Constitutionalism, Jospeh Vining

Articles

The Moral Tradition of American Constitutionalism is one of those rare works that leads us to face, at the center of law and legal thought, the largest questions about human life and human purpose. There is a special reader's shudder, a certain gestural shift in the chair, reserved for that moment of realizing where one is being led-not to the edge, but to the center, so that the questions become insistent, and whatever we and others say and do in the face of them becomes our response to them.

The Trouble With Hairdressers, Donald J. Herzog Jan 1996

The Trouble With Hairdressers, Donald J. Herzog

Articles

Why should hairdressers, of all unlikely candidates, have come to exemplify equality, to be a cultural obsession of sort? Suffice it to say that hairdressers happened to occupy a social position that made it possible to demonize them.

Towards Deciding The Existance Of 2-(22,8,4) Designs, Brendan Mckay, Stanislaw Radziszowski Jan 1996

Towards Deciding The Existance Of 2-(22,8,4) Designs, Brendan Mckay, Stanislaw Radziszowski

Articles

We report on progress on towards deciding the existence of 2-(22,8,4) designs without assuming any automorphisms. Using computer algorithms we have shown that in any such design every two blocks have nonempty intersection, every quadruple of points can occur in at most two blocks, and no three blocks can pairwise intersect in one point.

Cardozo's Allegheny College Opinion: A Case Study In Law As An Art, Michael Townsend Jan 1996

Cardozo's Allegheny College Opinion: A Case Study In Law As An Art, Michael Townsend

Articles

This Article consists of two related pieces. One piece considers interpretations of Cardozo's opinion in Allegheny College v. National Chautauqua County Bank. Cardozo commonly is placed among the greatest American judges, but his "analysis in Allegheny College is regularly criticized as contrived and artificial." This Article attempts to resuscitate the reputation of his analysis by placing the case in its historical and doctrinal context. The other piece continues the elaboration of a framework introduced in a previous article for thinking about law as a discipline. Central to this framework is a particular conception of the western intellectual tradition in …

A Formal Preparation For Object-Oriented Query Optimisation, Catherine Higgins Jan 1996

A Formal Preparation For Object-Oriented Query Optimisation, Catherine Higgins

Articles

This paper describes work that is in progress on a formalised preparation to object-oriented query optimisation. Such preparation is conducive to the development of optimisation strategies. As an example of a formal preparation, this paper presents a formalised object algebra, a suggested optimisation method and an implementation of an algebraic converter suitable for DAPLEX.

Chp And Energy Conservation, Jim Mcgovern Sep 1995

Chp And Energy Conservation, Jim Mcgovern

Articles

The principles of the use of 'combined heat and power' (CHP) for the achievement of fuel energy conservation, minimisation of environmental impact and economic advantage are explained. A distinction is made between the two types of outputs: heat and work. It is argued that an efficiency value that is defined as the sum of the heat and work outputs divided by the energy of the fuel used is not very meaningful. An alternative, rational, efficiency is explained. It is concluded that CHP is an option to be considered where both heating and power are required, but is not a general …

Testing Colour-Appearance Models: Guidelines For Coordinated Research, Mark Fairchild Aug 1995

Testing Colour-Appearance Models: Guidelines For Coordinated Research, Mark Fairchild

Articles

These guidelines provide an overview of the many issues involved in generating visual data that can be used to evaluate the performance of colour-appearance models. the three main sections of these guidelines outline the parameters that must be evaluated and controlled in experimental setups for colour-appearance experiments, suggested psychophysical techniques for gathering the data, and some suggested techniques for data analysis. Experimental parameters addressed include models to be tested, illumination conditions, background and surround conditions, types of stimuli to be used, and issues relating to viewing technique. the psychophysical techniques of magnitude estimation, matching, and direct model testing (paired comparison) …

Dephased Index And Gain Coupling In Distributed Feedback Lasers, David Cardimona, Mohinder Sharma, Vassilios Kovanis Jan 1995

Dephased Index And Gain Coupling In Distributed Feedback Lasers, David Cardimona, Mohinder Sharma, Vassilios Kovanis

Articles

In this paper, we study the reflection coefficient of a periodic Bragg reflecting structure in which there exists both an index-of-refraction grating as well as a gain grating. Most past studies have assumed that these two gratings were in phase with each other. In the present work we investigate the effects that arise when a phase shift is purposely introduced between the two gratings. We use a normal coupled-wave analysis to calculate the reflection coefficient as a function of the detuning away from the Bragg frequency when this grating phase difference is varied from 0 to 2π. We find particular …

Fuzzifying The Natural Law--Legal Positivist Debate, Edward S. Adams, Torben Spaak Jan 1995

Fuzzifying The Natural Law--Legal Positivist Debate, Edward S. Adams, Torben Spaak

Articles

Legal scholars have long debated various theories of law. The debate between natural lawyers and legal positivists is case in point. This debate centers, as is well known, on the claim that there is a conceptual connection between law and morality. Natural law theorists maintain that there is such a connection, whereas legal positivists maintain that there isn't. The dialogue in this article details the respective positions of a natural law theorist, Naturalis, a legal positivist, Positivus, and a fuzzy logician, Multivalus, with regard to a case that arose in post-war Germany. As the dialogue highlights, fuzzy logic is a …
