Encryption Using Deterministic Chaos, Jonathan Blackledge, Nikolai Ptitsyn Jan 2010

Encryption Using Deterministic Chaos, Jonathan Blackledge, Nikolai Ptitsyn

Articles

The concepts of randomness, unpredictability, complexity and entropy form the basis of modern cryptography and a cryptosystem can be interpreted as the design of a key-dependent bijective transformation that is unpredictable to an observer for a given computational resource. For any cryptosystem, including a Pseudo-Random Number Generator (PRNG), encryption algorithm or a key exchange scheme, for example, a cryptanalyst has access to the time series of a dynamic system and knows the PRNG function (the algorithm that is assumed to be based on some iterative process) which is taken to be in the public domain by virtue of the Kerchhoff-Shannon …

An Optical Machine Vision System For Applications In Cytopathology, Jonathan Blackledge, Dmitry Dubovitskiy

Articles

This paper discusses a new approach to the processes of object detection, recognition and classification in a digital image focusing on problem in Cytopathology. A unique self learning procedure is presented in order to incorporate expert knowledge. The classification method is based on the application of a set of features which includes fractal parameters such as the Lacunarity and Fourier dimension. Thus, the approach includes the characterisation of an object in terms of its fractal properties and texture characteristics. The principal issues associated with object recognition are presented which include the basic model and segmentation algorithms. The self-learning procedure for …

Development Of A Panchromatic Acrylamide Based Photopolymer For Multicolour Reflection Holography, Chakrapani Meka, Raghavendra Jallapuram, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal

Articles

The development of a panchromatic acrylamide based photopolymer (ABP) for holographic recording application is presented. The scattering of the recording medium was characterised by measuring the Bidirectional Scattering Distribution Function (BSDF). The dynamic range in reflection mode of recording was evaluated by measuring the diffraction efficiencies of the holographic gratings recorded individually at 633nm, 532nm, and 473nm wavelengths at spatial frequencies of 4200 l/mm, 5000 l/mm and 5700 l/mm respectively. Spectral characterisation of the reflection gratings recorded using a combined single RGB beam was carried out and the reconstructed wavelengths were monitored and compared with the recording wavelengths. The recorded …

A Systematic Study Of The Dispersion Of Swnts In Organic Solvents, Qiaohuan Cheng, Sourabhi Debnath, Luke O'Neill, Theresa Hedderman, Elizabeth Gregan, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Dispersions of as-produced HiPco single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in a series of organic solvents were prepared by dilution with the aid of tip sonication. Mild centrifugation (~ 945 g) was carried out to remove large bundles. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies revealed that the bundle size decreased as the dispersion was diluted. By measuring the UV-vis-NIR absorption before and after centrifugation as a function of the concentration, the dispersion limit of SWNTs in each solvent can be determined. Correlations between the dispersion limit and solvent solubility parameters, including the Hildebrand solubility parameter and three dimensional Hansen solubility parameters, are explored, …

Electrochemical Characterisation Of Poly Arylene Vinylenes, Jonathan Moghal, Patrick Lynch, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne, Gordon Chambers

Articles

The electrochemical properties of a newly synthesised set of PPV derivatives were measured by cyclic voltammetry. A new octyloxy substituted PPV derivative was first synthesised (POPV). The structure of the POPV is varied systematically by the replacement of the phenyl units by naphthyl and anthryl units and the effect of these variations on the electrochemical properties is explored. The HOMO–LOMO levels of the polymers were determined from the onset potentials for the p-doping and n-doping scans. From this the electrochemical bandgap for each of the polymers was calculated. The systematic change in the structure of the POPV results in a …

Articles

Organic-inorganic polymers formed by hydrolysis/condensation reactions of alkoxide precursors, such as organically modified silanes (Ormosils) have found applications as electronic, optical and protective coatings. Such coatings possess important characteristics such as chemical stability, physical strength and scratch resistance. Further performance improvement is achieved through the incorporation of zirconium and titanium based nanoparticles, also formed through the sol-gel process. However due to the inherent difference in the reactivity of the precursors, the hydrolysis of each precursor must be carried out separately before being combined for final condensation. Zirconium precursors are commonly chelated using acetic acid or acetyl acetonate prior to hydrolysis, …

Single Step Morphology-Controlled Synthesis Of Silver Nanoparticles, Vinodkumar Etacheri, Reenamole Georgekutty, Michael Seery, Suresh Pillai

Articles

Silver nanoparticles having different size and plasmon resonances were synthesized through a single step aqueous based method. The current procedure was based on the reduction of silver ions by ascorbic acid in the presence of sodiumborohydride and trisodium citrate. Triangular colloidal nanoparticles having different plasmon resonances (and hence different size and colours) were synthesized by varying only the concentration of ascorbic acid. These nanoparticles were found to be stable without using any surfactants or polymers. This study revealed a strong correlation between particle growth and concentration of constituent chemicals. Crystallinity and phase purity of the silver samples were investigated through …

Computational Micromodel For Epigenetic Mechanisms, Karthika Raghavan, Heather J. Ruskin, Dimitri Perrin, Francois Goasmat, John Burns

Articles

Characterization of the epigenetic profile of humans since the initial breakthrough on the human genome project has strongly established the key role of histone modifications and DNA methylation. These dynamic elements interact to determine the normal level of expression or methylation status of the constituent genes in the genome. Recently, considerable evidence has been put forward to demonstrate that environmental stress implicitly alters epigenetic patterns causing imbalance that can lead to cancer initiation. This chain of consequences has motivated attempts to computationally model the influence of histone modification and DNA methylation in gene expression and investigate their intrinsic interdependency. Welfare As Happiness, John Bronsteen, Christopher Buccafusco, Jonathan Masur

Articles

Perhaps the most important goal of law and policy is improving people’s lives. But what constitutes improvement? What is quality of life, and how can it be measured? In previous articles, we have used insights from the new field of hedonic psychology to analyze central questions in civil and criminal justice, and we now apply those insights to a broader inquiry: how can the law make life better? The leading accounts of human welfare in law, economics, and philosophy are preference-satisfaction - getting what one wants - and objective list approaches - possessing an enumerated set of capabilities. Motion In Augmented Reality Games: An Engine For Creating Plausible Physical Interactions In Augmented Reality Games, Brian Mac Namee, David Beaney, Qingqing Dong

Articles

The next generation of Augmented Reality (AR) games will require real and virtual objects to coexist in motion in immersive game environments. This will require the illusion that real and virtual objects interact physically together in a plausible way. The Motion in Augmented Reality Games (MARG) engine described in this paper has been developed to allow these kinds of game environments. The paper describes the design and implementation of the MARG engine and presents two proof-of-concept AR games that have been developed using it. Evaluations of these games have been performed and are presented to show that the MARG engine …

more evident than in the limited capabilities of Spatial Information Systems (SIS) to manipulate data from aerial Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). Currently, multiple software packages are needed to conduct three-dimensional (3D) analysis of LiDAR data. This workflow heavily relies on importing and exporting different file formats, thus potentially losing accuracy and increasing costs. Ideally, all required functionality would be available within a single system. New functionalities in Oracle Spatial combined with our enhanced 3D-indexing for hosting and analysing offer a critical breakthrough in this area.

Assessing The Application Of 3d Collaborative Interfaces Within An Immersive Virtual University, Gavin Mcardle, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, Michela Bortolotto

Articles

The need to stimulate and engage students is of paramount importance within any learning scenario. Despite this, recent developments in online learning have failed to take this requirement into account. As a result e-learning courses which utilise traditional online learning management systems have a higher dropout rate than their classroom based counterparts. The attrition rate is attributed to boredom with the interfaces used to deliver learning material and also to the lack of opportunities to interact socially with others. Furthermore, being in a virtual environment imposes a whole new set of challenges onto users due to the distinct lack of …

Mobile Mapping Systems (MMSs) for infrastructural monitoring and mapping arebecoming more prevalent as the availability and affordability of solutions that generate high accuracy geospatial data has matured. However, no existent methodology or systemexists where all theLiDAR, video, navigation, infrared and multispectraldata sources, collected from thismobile platform are integrated into a single, comprehensivedata management solution. Based on empirical experience there is a need for an MMS-data management framework where these types of data can be dynamically accessed and integratedto enable different projects with varying objectives todynamically accessdifferent MMS-data for, in one example, use in feature extraction algorithms. In this paper we introduce the LiDAR …

A Scaling Method And Its Applications To Problems In Fractional Dimensional Space, Sami I. Muslih, Om P. Agrawal Dec 2009

A Scaling Method And Its Applications To Problems In Fractional Dimensional Space, Sami I. Muslih, Om P. Agrawal

Articles

A scaling method is proposed to find (1) the volume and the surface area of a generalized hypersphere in a fractional dimensional space and (2) the solid angle at a point for the same space. It is demonstrated that the total dimension of the fractional space can be obtained by summing the dimension of the fractional line element along each axis. The regularization condition is defined for functions depending on more than one variable. This condition is applied (1) to find a closed form expression for the fractional Gaussian integral, (2) to establish a relationship between a fractional dimensional space …

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis Of Zno Micro-Javelins, Suresh Pillai, Declan Mccormack, John M. Kelly, Sibu C. Padmanabhan

Articles

The microwave (MW)-assisted formation of ZnO micro-javelins from zinc nitrate and urea in aqueous solution is described. The particles (named as ‘micro-javelins’ because of their high aspect ratio and needle-like tips) grow hexagonally with well-defined facets in the h0110i direction and pointed tips in (0001) direction. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns show the appearance of a strikingly dominant (1000) orientation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations reveal the morphological evolution of these hexagonal ZnO particles with time. The effect of precursor concentrations, counterion type andMWirradiation power and their consequent influence on pH and Zn2+ ion concentration are …

Photopolymers: Beyond The Standard Approach To Photosensitisation, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal Sep 2009

Photopolymers: Beyond The Standard Approach To Photosensitisation, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal

Articles

A photopolymerizable material for use in the visible normally consists of a dye sensitizer, a free radical generator, monomer/monomers and, optionally, a binder, and is prepared usually as a dry or liquid film. Upon illumination with light of appropriate wavelength, a photopolymerisation reaction is triggered, leading to a change in the film’s refractive index. Because the presence of the dye is essential, the film is usually made sensitive to light during its preparation. Here we separate the film preparation and the sensitisation processes. In this way the photopolymerisation process can be used to detect dye labelled analytes, providing an alternative …

Spectroscopic Investigation Of The Anatase-To-Rutile Transformation Of Sol-Gel Synthesised Tio2 Photocatalysts, Nicholas Nolan, Suresh Pillai, Michael Seery

Articles

Among the three major phases in titania, anatase is reported to be a better photocatalytically active phase. Anatase to rutile transformations, under normal conditions, usually occurs at a temperatue range of 600- 700 °C. Various chemical additives have previously been employed to extend the anatase transition to higher temperatures. Effect of employing various concentrations of formic acid and water on phase transition has systematically been studied by XRD, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. A considerably higher anatase phase (41%) has been obtained at 800 ºC and 10% anatase composition is retained after annealing the materials at 900 ºC for the optimised …

Stochastic Particle Acceleration In The Lobes Of Giant Radio Galaxies, Stephen O'Sullivan, Brian Reville, Andrew Taylor Sep 2009

Stochastic Particle Acceleration In The Lobes Of Giant Radio Galaxies, Stephen O'Sullivan, Brian Reville, Andrew Taylor

Articles

We investigate the acceleration of particles by Alfv ́en waves via the second-order Fermi process in the lobes of giant radio galaxies. Such sites are candidates for the accelerators of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR). We focus on the nearby Fanaroff–Riley type I radio galaxy Centaurus A. This is motivated by the coincidence of its position with the arrival direction of several of the highest energy Auger events. The conditions necessary for consistency with the acceleration time-scales predicted by quasi-linear theory are reviewed. Test particle calculations are performed in fields which guarantee electric fields with no component parallel to the local …
