A High-Resolution Melting Approach For Analyzing Allelic Expression Dynamics, Jiazheng Yuan, Muhammad Haroon, David A. Lightfoot, Yvan Pelletier, Qiang Liu, Xiu-Qing Li Jan 2009

A High-Resolution Melting Approach For Analyzing Allelic Expression Dynamics, Jiazheng Yuan, Muhammad Haroon, David A. Lightfoot, Yvan Pelletier, Qiang Liu, Xiu-Qing Li

Articles

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are single base pair mutations that provide new approaches to studies of allele transcript abundances. High-resolution DNA melting curve (HRM) analysis using a LightScanner (Hi-Res Melting system with Idaho's LC Green) provides post-PCR detection of mutations and SNPs in genomic DNA. This study investigated whether the HRM analysis can distinguish alleles among potato (Solanum tuberosum) transcript abundances. Transcript properties of genes encoding seven carbohydrate metabolism enzymes/proteins in various tissues and cold storage durations were studied. The HRM assay measured differential expression of alleles between different organs, between different storage treatments and stages of tubers from the …

Media Discourses On Autonomy In Dying And Death, Christina Quinlan Jan 2009

Media Discourses On Autonomy In Dying And Death, Christina Quinlan

Articles

THIS PAPER IS A SYNOPSIS of a research project designed to examine the representations of particular experiences of dying and death as represented in media consumed in Ireland. This media research is a small part of a large study commissioned by the Hospice Friendly Hospitals Programme, through the Irish Hospice Foundation. The large study, undertaken by a team of researchers from University College Cork and the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland, was tasked with the development of an ethical framework for health-care practitioners on patient autonomy in end-oflife care. Patient autonomy at end-of-life is the degree of autonomy or control …

Run Out Of The Gallery: The Changing Nature Of Irish Political Journalism, Kevin Rafter Jan 2009

Run Out Of The Gallery: The Changing Nature Of Irish Political Journalism, Kevin Rafter

Articles

THIS ARTICLE EXAMINES THE evolution of parliamentary and political reporting in Ireland and builds on earlier work by Foley (1993) and Horgan (2001). It considers the changing nature of Irish political journalism and the loss of influence of the Parliamentary Press Gallery and its constituent part, the Political Correspondents Group. This analysis takes place against a backdrop of continuing very high interest in politics in Ireland. During the 2007 general election, the television debate between Bertie Ahern and Enda Kenny, the leaders of the two main political parties, had an average audience of 941000 – a national audience share of …

The Irish Punditocracy As Contrarian Voice: Opinion Coverage Of The Workplace Smoking Ban, Declan Fahy Jan 2009

The Irish Punditocracy As Contrarian Voice: Opinion Coverage Of The Workplace Smoking Ban, Declan Fahy

Articles

THE JOURNALISM OF COMMENTATORS and columnists has remained a lacuna in media studies. Their work has received so little sustained critical attention that it has become something of a ‘black box’, even as as the space devoted to opinion coverage in newspapers has expanded significantly over the past three decades. The section of the newspaper devoted to opinion journalism has traditionally been the op-ed page, so-called because of its usual placement opposite the section containing editorials. Viewed as a forum for the articulation of diverse viewpoints about current social issues, the page aims to provide a space in the ‘marketplace …

Suing The Pope And Scandalising The People: Irish Attitudes To Sexual Abuse By Clergy Pre- And Post-Screening Of A Critical Documentary, Michael J. Breen, Hannah Mcgee, Ciaran O’Boyle, Helen Goode, Eoin Devereux Jan 2009

Suing The Pope And Scandalising The People: Irish Attitudes To Sexual Abuse By Clergy Pre- And Post-Screening Of A Critical Documentary, Michael J. Breen, Hannah Mcgee, Ciaran O’Boyle, Helen Goode, Eoin Devereux

Articles

THE SEXUAL ABUSE OF children became a significant public issue in Ireland in the 1990s, with frequent media reports about the issue. In the main these focused on the issue of abuse of children by members of the clergy and religious orders. Headline cases included the abuse perpetrated by Fr Brendan Smyth, a priest of a religious order who was convicted of multiple counts of sexual abuse of children and subsequently died in prison, and Fr Seán Fortune, a diocesan priest, who committed suicide before his court trial for abuse. While child sexual abuse by clergy was widely exposed in …

Operation Armageddon: Doomsday For Irish Armed Forces, Tom Clonan Jan 2009

Operation Armageddon: Doomsday For Irish Armed Forces, Tom Clonan

Articles

Lynch’s Invasion Plans Exactly forty years ago, in August and September of 1969, intense rioting and civil unrest prevailed throughout Northern Ireland – violence that would ultimately lead to the outbreak of the Troubles. As the violence reached fever pitch the then Taoiseach, Jack Lynch made a televised speech to the nation on RTE in which he used – the now immortal and much misquoted phrase – ‘We will not stand by’. For almost forty years, historians and political pundits alike have argued over the precise meaning of this provocative – and yet somewhat ambiguous phrase. Had Jack Lynch intended …

Analysis And Performance Evaluation Of An All-Fiber Wide Range Interrogation System For A Bragg Grating Sensor Array, Ginu Rajan, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell Jan 2009

Analysis And Performance Evaluation Of An All-Fiber Wide Range Interrogation System For A Bragg Grating Sensor Array, Ginu Rajan, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell

Articles

Analysis and performance evaluation of a macro-bend ¯ber based interrogation system for a Bragg grating sensor array is presented. Due to the characteristic properties of the macro-bend ¯ber ¯lter such as polarization and temperature dependence and the total noise associated with the ratiometric system, a best ¯t ratio slope is required to interrogate multiple FBGs whose peak wavelengths are spread over a wide wavelength range, rather than the optimal slope for individual FBG. In this paper for investigation we have used an FBG array with 5 FBGs with peak re°ected wavelengths lying between 1525 nm and 1575 nm. The analysis …

Motivation And Decision Making In City Break Travel, Gerard Dunne Jan 2009

Motivation And Decision Making In City Break Travel, Gerard Dunne

Articles

The demand for city breaks has been one of the major growth areas in travel and tourism in recent years. The city break product is generally considered to be different from other holiday products, particularly in a spatial and temporal context. However marketing strategies targeting this important tourism niche continue to be based on data that is often anecdotal and frequently inaccurate. This book explores the distinctive characteristics of this form of travel and in particular the motivations and decision making involved in taking such trips. The book presents a decision making continuum that highlights the variation that exists between …

Competition: The Next Generation Of Environmental Regulation?, Stephen M. Johnson Jan 2009

Competition: The Next Generation Of Environmental Regulation?, Stephen M. Johnson

Articles

Risk. In the environmental arena, when determining whether to regulate or how to regulate activities or products, policymakers must begin by assessing the level of risk presented by the activity or product. Although essential information about the level of risk is often in the hands of the actors or producers, they may be reluctant to provide this information to policymakers, unless they are compelled to do so, because the disclosure of information about the risk presented by their activity or product could reduce demand for their activity or product, increase potential liability for harm caused by their activity or product, …

Is Religion The Environment’S Last Best Hope? Targeting Change In Individual Behavior Through Personal Norm Activation, Stephen M. Johnson Jan 2009

Is Religion The Environment’S Last Best Hope? Targeting Change In Individual Behavior Through Personal Norm Activation, Stephen M. Johnson

Articles

This Article explores the important role that religious organizations have played, and can play, in personal norm activation to influence change in individuals’ environmentally destructive actions. Part I of the Article describes the need for regulating or targeting individuals, in addition to industrial sources, in order to address many of the remaining significant environmental problems. Part II examines the advantages and disadvantages of targeting individual actions through command-and-control regulation, economic-based alternatives, and information disclosure programs. Part III outlines the concept of norm activation and details the manner in which information disclosure programs can be used to activate personal norms to …

Heat Transfer Correlations For Low Approach Evaporative Cooling Systems In Buildings, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn Jan 2009

Heat Transfer Correlations For Low Approach Evaporative Cooling Systems In Buildings, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn

Articles

The experimental performance of an open industrial scale cooling tower, utilising small approach temperature differences (1–3 K), for rejection of heat at the low water temperatures (11–20 °C) typical of chilled ceilings and other sensible air–water heat dissipation systems in buildings, is examined. The study was carried out under temperate maritime climatic conditions (3–18 °C wet-bulb temperature range). Initially a theoretical analysis of the process at typical conditions for this climate was conducted, which indicated that a water to air (L/G) mass flow rate ratio of less than 1.0 was required for effective operation. Consequently for these low L/G ratios, …

Rethinking Categorical Prohibitions On Capital Punishment: How The Current Test Fails Mentally Ill Offenders And What To Do About It, Pamela A. Wilkins Jan 2009

Rethinking Categorical Prohibitions On Capital Punishment: How The Current Test Fails Mentally Ill Offenders And What To Do About It, Pamela A. Wilkins

Articles

My aim in this short Article is both specific and general. Specifically, I examine whether the Eighth Amendment should be held to prohibit imposition of death sentences upon offenders with severe mental illnesses, as is the case with mentally retarded and juvenile offenders. More generally, and perhaps more importantly, I examine the current Eighth Amendment test for categorical prohibitions, find it wanting, and propose a different test that, at least in my view, more neatly captures what the Eighth Amendment is intended to accomplish.

I believe the key to an Eighth Amendment analysis of categorical prohibitions lies in two dilemmas …

High Resolution Temperature Insensitive Interrogation Technique For Fbg Sensors, Qiang Wu, Yuliya Semenova, An Sun, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell Jan 2009

High Resolution Temperature Insensitive Interrogation Technique For Fbg Sensors, Qiang Wu, Yuliya Semenova, An Sun, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell

Articles

In this letter, we propose a high resolution temperature insensitive interrogation technique for FBG sensors where one FBG acts as an edge filter to interrogate a separate FBG sensor. A high resolution of better than 5 με in strain measurement range from 0 to 1100 με and the best resolution of better than 1 με were verified by experiments. An error of only ±2.2 με is achieved over a temperature range from 15 to 50 °C, indicating that this strain interrogation technique is temperature insensitive. Using an altered system configuration, the temperature was also measured simultaneously with a resolution better …

Building The Bottom Up From The Top Down, A. Michael Froomkin Jan 2009

Building The Bottom Up From The Top Down, A. Michael Froomkin

Articles

"Bottom up" governance. "Self-organization." These are among the most talismanic virtue-words of modern political discourse. Yet the reality is that in politics, "self-organization" is rare, being hard to initiate and even harder to sustain. As Oscar Wilde once complained about socialism, it "requires too many evenings." Governance as we tend to know it depends primarily on hierarchical institutions, or on close coordination within small groups. True partnerships, conversations among engaged equals, do not seem to scale. Indeed, whether one believes the fundamental problem to be something about the economics of group formation, the iron law of oligarchy, or something in …

Fault In Contract Law, Eric A. Posner Jan 2009

Fault In Contract Law, Eric A. Posner

Articles

A promisor is strictly liable for breaching a contract, according to the standard account. However, a negligence-based system of contract law can be given an economic interpretation, and this Article shows that such a system is in some respects more attractive than the strict-liability system. This may explain why, as a brief discussion of cases shows, negligence ideas continue to play a role in contract decisions.

Happiness And Punishment, Jonathan Masur, John Bronsteen, Christopher Buccafusco Jan 2009

Happiness And Punishment, Jonathan Masur, John Bronsteen, Christopher Buccafusco

Articles

This Article continues our project of applying new findings in the behavioral psychology of human happiness to some of the most deeply analyzed questions in law. When a state decides how to punish criminal offenders, at least one important consideration is the amount of harm any given punishment is likely to inflict. It would be undesirable, for example, to impose greater harm on those who commit less serious crimes or to impose harm that rises to the level of cruelty. Our penal system fits punishments to crimes primarily by adjusting the size of monetary fines and the length of prison …

Corporate Philanthropy And The Market For Altruism, M. Todd Henderson, Anup Malani Jan 2009

Corporate Philanthropy And The Market For Altruism, M. Todd Henderson, Anup Malani

Articles

Academics and businesspeople have long debated the merits of corporate philanthropy. It is our contention that this debate is too narrowly focused on the role of corporations. There is a robust market for philanthropic works--which we call the market for altruism--in which nonprofit organizations, the government, and for-profit corporations compete to do good works. In this Essay, we describe this market and the role corporations play in satisfying the demand for altruism. We conclude that corporations should only engage in philanthropy when they have a comparative advantage over nonprofits and the government. Moreover, the government must avoid discriminating--particularly when setting …
