Combating Staphylococcus Aureus And Its Methicillin Resistance Gene (Meca) With Cold Plasma, Xinyu Liao, Patrick J. Cullen, Donghong Liu, Aliyu Idris Muhammad, Shiguo Chen, Xingqian Ye, Jun Wang, Tian Ding

Articles

The increase in antibiotic resistance has become a global challenge to public health. In this study, an atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) system was applied for combating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and its methicillin resistance gene (mecA) during food wastewater treatment. The plate count and flow cytometry methods were employed to estimate the damage in MRSA induced by plasma treatment. A quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) method was used to assess the plasma-induced degradation of the mecA genes. The inactivation of MRSA and degradation of extracellular (e-) and intracellular (i-)mecA genes were investigated in phosphate buffered solution as a function of plasma …

Plasma Activated Water And Airborne Ultrasound Treatments For Enhanced Germination And Growth Of Soybean, Chiara Lo Porto, Dana Ziuzina, Agata Los, Daniela Boehm, Fabio Palumbo, Pietro Favia, Brijesh Tiwari, Paula Bourke, Patrick J. Cullen

Articles

The effect of two novel technologies, also in combination, on germination and growth of soybeans has been investigated. On one side, ultrasound treatment of the seeds increased water uptake without altering the morphology and the wettability of the seed coat, but also induced slight chemical modifications of the outer part of the seed. Plasma-activated water (PAW), obtained from treating water with non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma in air, increased the rate of germination and subsequent plant growth. Different combinations of these two technologies were tested in order to study their interaction and to identify an optimum treatment process. Industrial relevance A great …

Targeting The Folate Receptor: Improving Efficacy In Inorganic Medicinal Chemistry, Pauraic Mccarron, Aisling Crowley, Denis O'Shea, Malachy Mccann, Orla L. Howe, Mary Hunt, Michael Devereux

Articles

The discovery of the high-affinity, high-specificity folate receptor in mamalian kidney cells, coupled with the ability of folate to enter cells by folate receptor-mediated endocytosis and the subsequent elucidation of the folate receptor’s overexpression in specific cancer cell types; heralded the arrival of the area of chemotherapeutic folate targeting. The application of purely organic folate-based small-molecule drug conjugates that selectively target the folate receptor, which is over expressed in several diseases such as cancer, is well established. The application of inorganic folate-targeted drugs offers significant potential to expand and enhance this therapeutic approach. From the data made available to date, …

Chemical Modifications Of Lipids And Proteins By Nonthermal Food Processing Technologies, Juan M. PéRez-AndréS, CléMentine Charoux, Patrick J. Cullen, Brijesh K. Tiwari

Articles

A range of nonthermal techniques have demonstrated process efficacy in ensuring product safety, extension of shelf life, and in general a retention of key quality attributes. However, various physical, chemical and biochemical effects of nonthermal techniques on macro and micro nutrients are evident, leading to both desirable and undesirable changes in food products. The objective of this review is to outline the effects of nonthermal techniques on food chemistry and the associated degradation mechanisms with the treatment of foods. Oxidation is one of the key mechanisms responsible for undesirable effects induced by nonthermal techniques. Degradation of key macromolecules largely depends …

Spectroscopic Study Of Excited Molecular Nitrogen Generation Due To Interactions Of Metastable Noble Gas Atoms, Laurence Scally, James Lalor, Miroslav Gulan, Patrick J. Cullen, Vladimir Milosavljevic

Articles

This work provides an insight into the generation of excited nitrogen species by allowing noble gases to interact both with one another and ambient air. He and Ar were utilized to generate the optimum selectivity process to create reactive nitrogen species. An optimum setting for the generation of excited molecular nitrogen species, based on their excited energy levels, was obtained when using a mixture of Ar-He at a ratio of 10:1. At that point, when a voltage of 27 kV is applied to the system, it reached the maximum efficiency for selectivity processes to occur which allowed for a greater …

Effect Of Muscle Type And Co-Pretreatment Combinations On The Colour Stability, Protein Oxidation And Shelf-Life Of Vacuum Packaged Beef Steaks, Lauren Anne Van Rooyen, Paul Allen, David I. O'Connor

Articles

This study investigated the effects of CO-pretreatments on three bovine muscles: Psoas major (PM), Gluteus medius (GM) and Semitendinosus (ST) on colour stability and quality attributes under anaerobic conditions. Steaks were exposed to one of four pretreatments: 1% CO for 5 h, 5% CO for 5 h, 1% CO for 24 h, with 60% CO2, (balance N2) or untreated (control) and then vacuum packaged and displayed (28 days at 2 °C). CO pretreatments improved redness for colour labile muscles (PM and GM). The optimum CO pretreatment was 1% for 5 h as this induced surface redness while discolouring (a* = …

Menstrual Cycle And The Temporal Discrimination Threshold, Eavan M. Mc Govern, Emer O'Connor, Ines Beiser, Laura Williams, John Butler, Brendan Quinlivan, Shruti Narasimham, Rebecca Beck, Richard B. Reilly, Sean O'Riordan, Michael Hutchinson Jan 2018

Menstrual Cycle And The Temporal Discrimination Threshold, Eavan M. Mc Govern, Emer O'Connor, Ines Beiser, Laura Williams, John Butler, Brendan Quinlivan, Shruti Narasimham, Rebecca Beck, Richard B. Reilly, Sean O'Riordan, Michael Hutchinson

Articles

The temporal discrimination threshold (TDT) is a proposed pre-clinical biomarker (endophenotype) for adult onset isolated focal dystonia (AOIFD). Age- and sex-related effects on temporal discrimination demonstrate that women, before the age of 40 years, have faster temporal discrimination than men but their TDTs worsen with age at almost three times the rate of men. Thus after 40 years the TDT in women is progressively worse than in men. AOIFD is an increasingly female-predominant disorder after the age of 40; it is not clear whether this age-related sexually-dimorphic difference observed for both the TDT and sex ratio at disease onset in …

Cognitive Load Reduces The Effects Of Optic Flow On Gait And 2 Electrocortical Dynamics During Treadmill Walking 3, Brenda Malcolm, John J. Foxe, John Butler, Sophie Molholm, Pierfilippo De Sanctis

Articles

While navigating complex environments the brain must continuously adapt to both external demands such as fluctuating sensory inputs, as well as internal demands, such as engagement in a cognitively demanding task. Previous studies have demonstrated changes in behavior and gait with increased sensory and cognitive load, but the underlying cortical mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, in a Mobile Brain/Body Imaging (MoBI) approach sixteen young adults walked on a treadmill with high-density EEG while 3D motion capture tracked kinematics of the head and feet. Visual load was manipulated with the presentation of optic flow with and without continuous mediolateral perturbations. The …

Fatigue And Damage Of Porcine Pars Interarticularis During Asymmetric Loading, Colin Bright, Stephen Tiernan, Fiona Mcevoy, Pat Kiely Jan 2018

Fatigue And Damage Of Porcine Pars Interarticularis During Asymmetric Loading, Colin Bright, Stephen Tiernan, Fiona Mcevoy, Pat Kiely

Articles

If the articular facets of the vertebra grow in an asymmetric manner, the developed bone geometry causes an asymmetry of loading. When the loading environment is altered by way of increased activity, the likelihood of acquiring a stress fracture may be increased. The combination of geometric asymmetry and increased activity is hypothesised to be the precursor to the stress fracture under investigation in this study, spondylolysis. This vertebral defect is an acquired fracture with 7% prevalence in the paediatric population. This value increases to 21% among athletes who participate in hyperextension sports. Tests were carried out on porcine lumbar vertebrae, …

Influenza Infection Directly Alters Innate Il-23 And Il-12p70 And Subsequent Il-17a And Ifn-Γ Responses To Pneumococcus In Vitro In Human Monocytes, Sinead T. Loughran, Patrick A. Power, Paula T. Maguire, Samantha L. Mcquaid, Paul J. Buchanan, Ingileif Jonsdottir, Robert W. Newman, Ruth Harvey, Patricia A. Johnson

Articles

It is well accepted that influenza A virus predisposes individuals to often more severe super-infections with Streptococcus pneumonia. However, the mechanisms that lead to this synergy are not clearly understood. Recent data suggests that competent Th17 immunity is crucial to clearance and protection from invasive pneumococcal disease of the lung. We demonstrate that early influenza infection significantly reduced levels of pneumococcus driven IL-12p70, IL-23 and IL-27 in human monocytes with significant impairment of IL-17A and IFN-γ in HKSP-treated allogeneic mixed lymphocyte cultures. We also provide evidence to suggest that the hemagglutinin component of the virus is at least partially responsible …

Articles

Competition-related dietary intake has not yet been investigated in Gaelic football. The present study examined the precompetition macronutrient intake of elite male Gaelic football players. Forty players from two teams completed a food diary on the 2 days preceding competition (Day 1 and Day 2) and on the match day prior to the match (match day). Carbohydrate intake was significantly greater on Day 2 compared with Day 1, for both absolute (295 ± 98 vs. 318 ± 77 g; p = .048; -23.6 g, 95% confidence interval [-47.3, 0.2]; Cohen's d = 0.27) and relative intake (3.4 ± 1.1 vs. …

Disposable Printed Lateral Flow Electrochemical Immunosensors For Human Cardiac Troponin T, Eithne Dempsey, Dhanraj Rathod Jan 2018

Disposable Printed Lateral Flow Electrochemical Immunosensors For Human Cardiac Troponin T, Eithne Dempsey, Dhanraj Rathod

Articles

Here we report an electrochemical ELISA approach for cardiac Troponin T (cTnT) determination based on a lateral flow membrane with underlying screen printed electrodes (<;100 Ω /cm 2 ). The thick film transducer was modified with the anti-cardiac Troponin T antibody via physisorption and the electrochemical performance of the immunosensor was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry. The capture antibody coated immunoelectrode employed for electrochemical determination of Troponin T antigen used a sandwich assay format with horseradish peroxidase conjugated signaling antibodies held in the track of a lateral flow sensor strip. A simple two step procedure realized signal acquisition within <;20 min (total assay time). The lateral flow electrochemical immunosensor response resulted in a calibration curve with linear response (0-700 ng/ml cTnT) with limit of detection of 0.15 ng/ml.

Service Charge Collection In Multi-Unit Developments, Adele Mckeown, Lorcan Sirr Jan 2018

Service Charge Collection In Multi-Unit Developments, Adele Mckeown, Lorcan Sirr

Articles

Multi-unit developments (MUDs) – typically developments of apartments, or apartments and houses, but also sometimes including a commercial component – differ from traditional housing as they have three distinct characteristics: individual ownership of a unit, shared ownership of common property, and collective membership of a corporate body that assumes responsibility for the management of the development (Christudason, 2004). In the Irish case, this corporate body is known as the owners’ management company (OMC). The legal framework for ownership in MUDs is based on leasehold, which means that the purchaser owns the property but not the land on which it is …

Articles

Attenuated Total Reflectance – Infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy holds great promise for industrial applications as a quality control tool for complex galenic formulations. Although the technique is often promoted for the molecular information it delivers in a label free and cost effective fashion, other advantages can emerge compared to gold standard analytical tools such as liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The present study demonstrates how ATR-IR measurements enable accurate quantitative analysis of an Active Cosmetic Ingredient such as Omegalight® encapsulated in a complex alginate based nano-capsule. The study demonstrates how precise concentrations can be obtained without the requirement for fastidious …

Investigating The Role Of Gold Nanoparticle Shape And Size In Their Toxicities To Fungi, Kangze Liu, Zhonglei He, Hugh Byrne, James Curtin, Furong Tian

Articles

Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) are increasingly being used in a wide range of applications, and such they are being released in greater quantities into the environment. Consequently, the environmental effects of GNPs, especially toxicities to living organisms, have drawn great attention. However, their toxicological characteristics still remain unclear. Fungi, as the decomposers of the ecosystem, interact directly with the environment and critically control the overall health of the biosphere. Thus, their sensitivity to GNP toxicity is particularly important. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of GNP shape and size in their toxicities to fungi, which could help …

Survivability Strategies For Emerging Wireless Networks With Data Mining Techniques: A Case Study With Netlogo And Rapidminer, Ivan Garcia-Magarino, Geraldine Gray, Raquel Lacuesta, Jaime Lloret

Articles

Emerging wireless networks have brought Internet and communications to more users and areas. Some of the most relevant emerging wireless technologies are Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, Long-Term Evolution Advanced, and ad hoc and mesh networks. An open challenge is to ensure the reliability and robustness of these networks when individual components fail. The survivability and performance of these networks can be especially relevant when emergencies arise in rural areas, for example supporting communications during a medical emergency. This can be done by anticipating failures and finding alternative solutions. This paper proposes using big data analytics techniques, such as decision …

Beauty Bloggers And Youtubers As A Community Of Practice, Valerie Gannon, Andrea Prothero

Articles

Much consumption-related activity online is outside of what is understood traditionally as community and is via user-generated content (UGC), of which blogs and YouTube channels in particular dominate in the beauty sphere. Community of practice (CoP) theory from social learning and organisation studies offers an alternative way to understand these consumption-based UGC practices. This study combines data from 25 interviews with bloggers and YouTubers and their blog posts and videos. Among these UGC creators we find mutual engagement, shared repertoires and joint enterprise. This paper theorises consumption-based UGC creators as a CoP and contributes insights for mangers as to how …

Effect Of Hydrofracking On Aquifers, Abdullah Faruque, Joshua Goldowitz Dec 2017

Effect Of Hydrofracking On Aquifers, Abdullah Faruque, Joshua Goldowitz

Articles

Geologists have understood the presence of shale gas and shale oil since the early 20th century, but always considered it unattainable due to shale’s low permeability. The shale gas revolution in the United States, brought about by the combination of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing has proven the feasibility of economically accessing this resource and significantly increasing the world’s proven reserve. As we enter the era of application of this technology worldwide, countries will have to weigh the promise of increased energy independence and hydrocarbon revenue against the potential damage to water supplies. Hydrofracking’s voracious thirst for water and potential …

Uk Governance: From Overloading To Freeloading, Richard Woodward Dec 2017

Uk Governance: From Overloading To Freeloading, Richard Woodward

Articles

The UK's ongoing political turbulence has prompted a reprise of debates from the 1970s when many concluded the country was ungovernable. Then, the most influential diagnosis conceptualised the UK's governance problem as one of ‘overloading’ caused by the electorate's excessive expectations. This article argues that these accounts overlooked another phenomenon besieging UK governance during this period. This phenomenon was freeloading: the withering of government capacity deriving from the ability of actors to enjoy the benefits of citizenship without altogether contributing to the cost. In the interim, these problems have become endemic, not least because of the unspoken but discernible policy …

Moving Beyond Lassiter: The Need For A Federal Statutory Right To Counsel For Parents In Child Welfare Cases, Vivek S. Sankaran Dec 2017

Moving Beyond Lassiter: The Need For A Federal Statutory Right To Counsel For Parents In Child Welfare Cases, Vivek S. Sankaran

Articles

In New York City, an indigent parent can receive the assistance of a multidisciplinary legal team—an attorney, a social worker, and a parent advocate—to defend against the City’s request to temporarily remove a child from her care. But in Mississippi, that same parent can have her rights to her child permanently terminated without ever receiving the assistance of a single lawyer. In Washington State, the Legislature has ensured that parents ensnared in child abuse and neglect proceedings will receive the help of a well-trained and well-compensated attorney with a reasonable caseload. Yet in Tennessee, its Supreme Court has held that …

How Does The Law Put A Historical Analogy To Work?: Defining The Imposition Of "A Condition Analogous To That Of A Slave" In Modern Brazil, Rebecca J. Scott, Leonardo Augusto De Andrade Barbosa, Carlos Henrique Borlido Haddad Dec 2017

How Does The Law Put A Historical Analogy To Work?: Defining The Imposition Of "A Condition Analogous To That Of A Slave" In Modern Brazil, Rebecca J. Scott, Leonardo Augusto De Andrade Barbosa, Carlos Henrique Borlido Haddad

Articles

Over the last decades, the Brazilian state has engaged in concerted legal efforts to identify and prosecute cases of what officials refer to as “slave labor” (trabalho escravo). At a conceptual level, the campaign has paired the constitutional protection of human dignity and the “social value of labor” with an expansive interpretation of the offense described in Article 149 of the Criminal Code as “the reduction of a person to a condition analogous to that of a slave.” At the operational level, mobile teams of inspectors and prosecutors have intervened in thousands of work sites, and labor prosecutors …

Progesterone For Prevention Of Preterm Birth: Shortcomings And Unintended Consequences Of The Orphan Drug Act, Rebekah E. Gee, Sreyram Kuy, Laura Karas

Articles

Preterm birth is a problem of major public health significance that continues to plague our country despite the existence of a therapy, 17α-hydroxyprogesterone caproate, with known efficacy in reducing the risk of spontaneous preterm birth among high-risk women. Over the past several years, the Louisiana Department of Health has undertaken a robust, multifaceted initiative to improve access to 17α-hydroxyprogesterone caproate, which resulted in a 3.5-fold increase in the percentage of eligible high-risk pregnant women in the Medicaid program who received the therapy between 2013 and 2016. Yet despite Louisiana's progress, the vast majority of the eligible population still fails to …

Risk And Resilience In Health Data Infrastructure, W. Nicholson Price Ii Dec 2017

Risk And Resilience In Health Data Infrastructure, W. Nicholson Price Ii

Articles

Today’s health system runs on data. However, for a system that generates and requires so much data, the health care system is surprisingly bad at maintaining, connecting, and using those data. In the easy cases of coordinated care and stationary patients, the system works—sometimes. But when care is fragmented, fragmented data often result. Fragmented data create risks both to individual patients and to the system. For patients, fragmentation creates risks in care based on incomplete or incorrect information, and may also lead to privacy risks from a patched together system. For the system, data fragmentation hinders efforts to improve efficiency …

The 2016 election has had significant consequences for American social welfare policy. Some of these consequences are direct. By giving unified control of the federal government to the Republican Party for the first time in a decade, the election has potentially empowered conservatives to ram through a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act—the landmark “Obamacare” law that marked the most significant expansion of the social welfare state since the 1960s. Other consequences are more indirect. Both the election result itself, and Republicans’ actions since, have spurred a renewed debate within the left-liberal coalition regarding the politics of social welfare …
