Undertaking Action Research In Prison: Developing The Older Prisoner Health And Social Care Assessment And Plan, Kate O'Hara, Elizabeth Walsh, Katrina Forsyth, Jane Senior, Jenny Shaw

Articles

Older prisoners are the fastest growing group in prisons. They have complex health and social care needs and the coordination of their care is suboptimal. An action learning group including health care staff, prison staff and older prisoners was established at one prison in England. The group developed the Older prisoner Health and Social Care Assessment and Plan (OHSCAP) which is a health and social care assessment and care planning process for the better identification and management of older prisoners’ needs. This paper describes and critically analyses the process of action learning in prison to develop and pilot the OHSCAP. …

Free Energies In A General Non-Local Theory Of A Material With Memory, Giovambattista Amendola, Mauro Fabrizio, John Murrough Golden Jun 2014

Free Energies In A General Non-Local Theory Of A Material With Memory, Giovambattista Amendola, Mauro Fabrizio, John Murrough Golden

Articles

A general theory of non-local materials, with linear constitutive equations and memory effects, is developed within a thermodynamic framework. Several free energy and dissipation functionals are constructed and explored. These include an expression for the minimum free energy and a functional that is a free energy for important categories of memory kernels and is explicitly a functional of the minimal state. The functionals discussed have a similar general form to the corresponding expressions for simple materials. A number of new results are derived for them, most of which apply equally to both types of material. In particular, detailed formulae are …

Geographic Information System-Based Tools In Environmental Management, Zeinab Bedri, Michael Bruen Jun 2014

Geographic Information System-Based Tools In Environmental Management, Zeinab Bedri, Michael Bruen

Articles

The authors reviewed existing modelling platforms as part of a large study of water and pollution pathways through catchments in Ireland (Irish EPA Pathways project). Worldwide, work on producing catchment management tools (CMTs) has been underway for some time and some of the tools identified here date from as early as 1989. Some of the management problems and model conceptualisations have not changed very much but now there is a stronger emphasis on water quality and more concern about a wider range of contaminants. What has changed substantially is the use of Geographical Information System and Graphical Windows interfaces as …

Metal-Organic Frameworks Based On Pyridyl-Tetrazole Ligands Containing Ester Or Carboxylate Pendant Arms, Ursula Sheridan, John Gallagher, Morten Bjerrum, Adrienne Fleming, Fintan Kelleher, John Mcginley May 2014

Metal-Organic Frameworks Based On Pyridyl-Tetrazole Ligands Containing Ester Or Carboxylate Pendant Arms, Ursula Sheridan, John Gallagher, Morten Bjerrum, Adrienne Fleming, Fintan Kelleher, John Mcginley

Articles

The coordination of pyridyl-tetrazole derivatives containing ester substituents, at either the N-1 or N-2 position of the tetrazole ring, with copper(II) chloride results in the formation of either 1:1 or 1:2 copper to ligand complexes, depending on the ligand. However, when the ester functionality is changed to a carboxylate group, the resulting complexation reactions yield metal-organic frameworks. The resulting structures vary dramatically in pore size, depending on both reaction solvents and position of carboxylate group on the tetrazole ring. Despite the presence of sodium cations in the reaction mixtures, no sodium incorporation was ever observed in any of the complexes. …

Development Of A Novel Hybrid Aluminum-Based Sol-Gel Materials: Application To The Protection Of Aa2024-T3 Alloys In Alkaline Environment, Mohamed Oubaha, Padinchare Covilakath Rajath Varma, Brendan Duffy, Zuhair Mattoug Gasem, Steven J. Hinder

Articles

Extensive research on environmentally complaint sol-gel coatings is currently underway for a wide range of applications. Sol-gel technology combines the synergistic properties of inorganic and organic components to design nanostructured coating materials with advanced physical properties. Through a judicious choice of precursors and additives improved performances, such as chemical resistance or pH stability, it can be achieved. This is of particular interest for copper rich AA 2024-T3 aluminium alloys used on aircraft, where increase in local pH occurs at corrosion sites. This work focuses on improving the alkaline stability and anticorrosion properties of such a sol-gel coatings on AA2024-T3 by …

Constitutional Venue, Peter L. Markowitz, Lindsay C. Nash May 2014

Constitutional Venue, Peter L. Markowitz, Lindsay C. Nash

Articles

A foundational concept of American jurisprudence is the principle that it is unfair to allow litigants to be haled into far away tribunals when the litigants and the litigation have little or nothing to do with the location of such courts. Historically, both personal jurisdiction and venue each served this purpose in related, but distinct ways. Personal jurisdiction is, at base, a limit on the authority of the sovereign. Venue, in contrast, aims to protect parties from being forced to litigate in a location where they would be unfairly disadvantaged. The constitutional boundaries of these early principles came to be …

Adopting Agile Practices When Developing Software For Use In The Medical Domain, Martin Mchugh, Fergal Mccaffery, Valentine Casey

Articles

Non-safety critical software developers have been reaping the benefits of adopting agile practices for a number of years. However, developers of safety critical software often have concerns about adopting agile practices. Through performing a literature review, this research has identified the perceived barriers to following agile practices when developing medical device software. A questionnaire based survey was also conducted with medical device software developers in Ireland to determine the barriers to adopting agile practices. The survey revealed that half of the respondents develop software in accordance with a plan driven software development lifecycle and that they believe that there are …

The Special Tribunal For Lebanon: A Defense Perspective, Charles Chernor Jalloh May 2014

The Special Tribunal For Lebanon: A Defense Perspective, Charles Chernor Jalloh

Articles

This Article analyzes the absence of organs tasked with guaranteeing the rights of the defense in international criminal law. It explains the historical origins of the problem, tracing it back to the genesis of modern prosecutions at the Nuremberg International Military Tribunal. It then explains how the organizational charts of the UN courts for the former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone omitted the defense and essentially treated it as a second class citizen before the eyes of the law. This sets the stage for the author to show why the creation of the first full-fledged defense organ in international criminal …

Given the widespread adoption of social media on the University of San Diego’s (USD) campus, Copley Library formed a Social Media Committee to manage the library’s social media presence with a mission to promote the library’s services and events. To determine which social media platforms undergraduates were using the committee designed and administered a survey in the fall of 2013. The survey confirmed that USD undergraduates were still using Facebook and showed 56% use multiple social media sites. The conference session discussed Copley Library’s implementation of four social networking platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter.
