Social Media And The Press, Lili Levi
Social Media And The Press, Lili Levi
Articles
The Internet and social media are transforming news as we knew it, yet the precise consequences of these changes are not yet clear. Journalists now rely on Twitter, crowdsourcing is available through social media, facts and stories are googled, traditional print newspapers have websites and reporter blogs, "open newsrooms" invite community participation in the editorial process itself, video from citizen journalists is commonly used in mainstream media storytelling, bloggers consider themselves journalists, and media consolidation marries entities like AOL and the Huffington Post. In turn, changes in the news-access practices of readers are increasingly influencing the length, breadth, and subjects …
Sport, Media And The Gaelic Athletic Association: The Quest For The “Youth” Of Ireland, John Connolly, Paddy Dolan
Sport, Media And The Gaelic Athletic Association: The Quest For The “Youth” Of Ireland, John Connolly, Paddy Dolan
Articles
Social developments and related dynamic relationships connected with the sports– media complex is a recurrent focus of sociological investigation. However, in explaining developments in the relationship between sports associations and media organizations the specific structure of power relations between them and other related organizations is often given primacy. We argue that this negates how changes in people’s social habitus – how people think feel and act – are interconnected with and critical to such explanations. Consequently, in this article we apply the theoretical frame of figurational sociology to demonstrate how the gradual development and expansion of specialist communications and media …
Connectedness In The Lives Of Older People In Ireland, Carmel Gallagher
Connectedness In The Lives Of Older People In Ireland, Carmel Gallagher
Articles
This paper presents an analysis of the connectedness of older people in two sample areas, one urban and one rural in Ireland. The paper is based on a study of the communal participation of older people in two geographic localities, Rathmore, a suburban area of Dublin, and Rathbeg, a rural area in County Donegal, conducted between 2000 and 2005. A multi stage study that used both qualitative and quantitative methods examined significant communal interactions of older people across a range of arenas, including leisure interests, involvement in clubs, religious practices, voluntary work, relationships with kin, friends and neighbours, helping activities, …

Electrically Tunable Fabry-Perot Resonator Based On Microstructured Si Contaning Liquid Crystal, V. A. Tolmachev, V. A. Melnikov, A. V. Baldycheva, Kevin Berwick, T. S. Perova
Articles
We have built Fabry-Pérot resonators based on microstructured silicon and a liquid crystal. The devices exhibit tuning of the resonance peaks over a wide range, with relative spectral shifts of up to Δλ/λ = 10%. In order to achieve this substantial spectral shift, cavity peaks of high order were used. Under applied voltages of up to 15 V, a variation in the refractive index of the nematic liquid crystal E7 from ΔnLC = 0.12 to ΔnLC = 0.17 was observed. These results may have practical applications in the near-, mid and far-infrared range.
Learning From Clergy Education: Externships Through The Lens Of Formation, Daisy Hurst Floyd, Timothy Floyd, Sarah Gerwig-Moore
Learning From Clergy Education: Externships Through The Lens Of Formation, Daisy Hurst Floyd, Timothy Floyd, Sarah Gerwig-Moore
Articles
Educating Lawyers, the 2007 Carnegie Foundation study of legal education, challenges law schools to become more intentional about educating students for formation of professional identity. Noting that clergy education has focused more on the formative aspects of professional education than have other professional schools, the study suggests that legal educators could learn a great deal from clergy education about teaching for professional identity formation. Taking that suggestion to heart, the authors undertook an examination of clergy education, with a particular focus on the role of field education in students’ personal and professional formation. This article reports on that examination …
A State-Based National Network For Effective Wildlife Conservation, Dale Goble
A State-Based National Network For Effective Wildlife Conservation, Dale Goble
Articles
State wildlife conservation programs provide a strong foundation for biodiversity conservation in the United States, building on state wildlife action plans. However, states may miss the species that are at the most risk at rangewide scales, and threats such as novel diseases and climate change increasingly act at regional and national levels. Regional collaborations among states and their partners have had impressive successes, and several federal programs now incorporate state priorities. However, regional collaborations are uneven across the country, and no national counterpart exists to support efforts at that scale. A national conservation-support program could fill this gap and could …
Resilience And Water Governance: Adaptive Governance In The Columbia River Basin, Barbara Cosens
Resilience And Water Governance: Adaptive Governance In The Columbia River Basin, Barbara Cosens
Articles
The 1964 Columbia River Treaty between the United States and Canada is currently under review. Under the treaty, the river is jointly operated by the two countries for hydropower and is the largest producer of hydropower in the western hemisphere. In considering the next phase of international river governance, the degree of uncertainty surrounding the drivers of change complicates efforts to predict and manage under traditional approaches that rely on historical ecosystem responses. At the same time, changes in social values have focused attention on ecosystem health, the decline of which has led to the listing of seven salmon and …

High-Q Bismuth-Silicate Nonlinear Glass Microsphere Resonators, Pengfei Wang, Ganapathy Murugan, Timothy Lee, Ming Ding, Gilberto Brambilla, Yuliya Semenova, Qiang Wu, Fumihito Koizumi, Gerald Farrell
Articles
The fabrication and characterization of a bismuth-silicate glass microsphere resonator has been demonstrated. At wavelengths near 1550 nm, high-modes can be efficiently excited in a 179-μm diameter bismuth-silicate glass microsphere via evanescent coupling using a tapered silica fiber with a waist diameter of circa 2 μm. Resonances with Q-factors as high as were observed. The dependence of the spectral response on variations in the input power level was studied in detail to gain an insight into power-dependent thermal resonance shifts. Because of their high nonlinearity and high- factors, bismuth-silicate glass microspheres offer the potential for robustly assembled fully integrated all-optical …

Maritime Health: A Review With Suggestions For Research, Malcolm Maclachlan, Bill Kavanagh, Alison Kay
Articles
International maritime health has largely developed within the sphere of occupational health services and international health problems. We reviewed publications in the journal International Maritime Health from 2000 to 2010 to establish the coverage of the journal and the scope of research in maritime health. We identified six thematic categories: healthcare access, delivery and integration; telehealth; non-communicable diseases and physical health problems; communicable diseases; psychological functioning and health; and safety-related issues. We describe the research within these themes and report on their publication prominence. We also analyse the research in terms of its geographical focus, the population groups addressed and …
Historical Gloss And The Separation Of Powers, Curtis A. Bradley, Trevor W. Morrison
Historical Gloss And The Separation Of Powers, Curtis A. Bradley, Trevor W. Morrison
Articles
Arguments based on historical practice are a mainstay of debates about the constitutional separation of powers. Surprisingly, however, there has been little sustained academic attention to the proper role of historical practice in this context. The scant existing scholarship is either limited to specific subject areas or focused primarily on judicial doctrine without addressing the use of historical practice in broader conceptual or theoretical terms. To the extent that the issue has been discussed, accounts of how historical practice should inform the separation of powers often require “acquiescence” by the branch of government whose prerogatives the practice implicates. Such acquiescence …

Theory And Practice In Antitrust Law: Judge Cudahy's Example, Diane P. Wood
Theory And Practice In Antitrust Law: Judge Cudahy's Example, Diane P. Wood
Articles
When Richard D. Cudahy graduated from the Yale Law School, antitrust law in the United States was at its zenith. The US. Department of Justice was bringing ambitious lawsuits to break up global cartels in all kinds of product markets, and the Supreme Court had condemned a number of restraints between competitors as illegal per se. Times have changed, as this Essay demonstrates. More recently, the Court overruled a ninety-six-year-old rule condemning resale price maintenance as per se illegal, ruling that such arrangements would henceforth be judged by the more nuanced rule of reason. This decision represents the denouement of …

Structural Constitutionalism As Counterterrorism, Aziz Huq
Structural Constitutionalism As Counterterrorism, Aziz Huq
Articles
During the past decade, federal courts have adjudicated proliferating challenges to novel policy responses to terrorism. Judges often resolve the individual rights and statutory interpretation questions implicated in those controversies by deploying presumptions or rules of thumb derived from the Constitution's Separation of Powers. These "structural constitutional presumptions" serve as heuristics to facilitate adjudication and to enable judicial bypass of difficult legal, policy, and factual questions. This Article challenges the use of such structural presumptions in counterterrorism cases. Drawing upon recent empirical research in political science, political psychology, and security studies, it demonstrates that abstract eighteenth-century Separation of Powers ideals …
Enforcing (But Not Defending) Unconstitutional Laws, Aziz Huq
Enforcing (But Not Defending) Unconstitutional Laws, Aziz Huq
Articles
When should the executive decline to defend in court a federal law it has determined to be unconstitutional, yet still enforce that same statute against third parties? The question is prompted by the Obama administration's decision to enforce, but not defend in federal court, Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act ("DOMA "). But the DOMA Section 3 decision is not the first time the executive has bifurcated the enforcement of a statute from its defense before the bench. The practice of enforcement-litigation gaps dates back at least to World War I. Commentators tend to judge the practice by …
The Death Penalty And The Mentally Ill: A Selected And Annotated Bibliography, Jean Mattimoe
The Death Penalty And The Mentally Ill: A Selected And Annotated Bibliography, Jean Mattimoe
Articles
The United States Supreme Court over the last decade has selectively whittled away at the scope and availability of the death penalty by exempting certain groups from execution under the Eighth Amendment. In 2002 the court ruled that executing mentally retarded criminals violates the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment. In 2005 the court ruled that the Constitution forbids the execution of individuals who were under the age of 18 when they committed their crimes. Currently there is an active debate on whether to extend the categorical exemptions created by the Court to the mentally ill. At the forefront …
