An Investigation Of The Properties Of Join Geometry, Louis John Giegerich Jr. May 1963

An Investigation Of The Properties Of Join Geometry, Louis John Giegerich Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This paper presents a proof that the classical geometry as stated by Karol Borsuk [1] follows from the join geometry of Walter Prenowitz [2].

The approach taken is to assume the axioms of Prenowitz. Using these as the foundation, the theory of join geometry is then developed to include such ideas as 'convex set', 'linear set', the important concept of 'dimension', and finally the relation of 'betweenness'. The development is in the form of definitions with the important extensions given in the form of theorems.

With a firm foundation of theorems in the join geometry, the axioms of classical geometry …

A set of elements with a binary operation is called a system, or, more explicitly, a mathematical system. [2] The following discussion will involve systems with only one operation. This operation will be denoted by "⋅" and will sometimes be referred to as a product.

The Lower Devonian Water Canyon Formation Of Northeastern Utah, Michael E. Taylor May 1963

The Lower Devonian Water Canyon Formation Of Northeastern Utah, Michael E. Taylor

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In 1948 Williams subdivided the Jefferson Formation of northeastern Utah into two formations. The upper formation was referred to as the Late Devonian Jefferson Formation and the lower formation the Early Devonian Water Canyon Formation (Williams, 1948, p. 1138). Since that time detailed study of the Water Canyon Formation has not been made. It is the purpose of this investigation to describe in detail the lithology and paleontology of the formation and their implication as to the environment of deposition of Early Devonian time in northeastern Utah.

The Influence Of Salinity On The Growth And Reproduction Of Marsh Plants, D. K. Kaushik May 1963

The Influence Of Salinity On The Growth And Reproduction Of Marsh Plants, D. K. Kaushik

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The water resources of the State of Utah are rapidly being developed for agriculture and industry. They are so extensively exploited that their continued and additional use must be justified on the basis of need and efficiency of utilization. To determine more accurately the quantity and quality of water needed to operate a marsh, a project was undertaken by the Utah Department of Fish and Game, the Engineering Experiment Station and the Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit at Utah State University. The study was divided into the two phases, one on quantity and one on quality of water. The present report …

Pressure Dependence Of Soil Water Matric Potential, Bozorg Bahrani May 1963

Pressure Dependence Of Soil Water Matric Potential, Bozorg Bahrani

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The partial specific Gibbs1 free energy or the chemical potential has been shown to be the most desirable thermodynamic function for describing soil-water systems. The absolute value of the chemical potential of soil water cannot be determined. If pure water at standard temperature and pressure is taken as the reference, the difference between the chemical potential of soil water and that of the reference can be measured and is called "soil water potential," which has the dimension of energy per unit mass.

The barometric pressure at the sea level has been accepted as the standard reference pressure. Thus, any …

The Effectiveness Of Leaching And Soil Amendments In Improving A Salt-Affected Soil Of The Hooper Area Of Utah, Edwin Baugh Haycock

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the relatively low lying delta area west of Ogden, Utah several thousand acres of potentially productive lands have been seriously affected by the accumulation of soluble salts and the associated condition of excessive exchangeable sodium. As a part of the Weber Basin Project, much of this large area of undeveloped or only partially developed land is proposed for irrigation. Successful irrigation of these salt-affected lands, however, is dependent upon their reclamation and improvement.

Salt Effect On Water Requirements Of Plants, Abdel-Wahhab M. H. Sallam May 1963

Salt Effect On Water Requirements Of Plants, Abdel-Wahhab M. H. Sallam

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water requirement was defined by Briggs and Shantz in 1911 as the ratio of the weight of water absorbed by a plant during its growth to the weight of dry matter produced. Ballard (1933) and Williams (1935) defined water requirement as the ratio of the amount of water transpired to the amount of dry matter produced. Ballard (1933) and Williams (1935) defined water requirement as the ratio of the amount of water transpired to the amount of dry matter formed during the whole or any part of the life cycle of the plant. Miller (1938) and Kramer (1959) postulated that …

A Field Study Of Miscible Displacement In Saturated Soils, Lloyd Dowley Mcfadden Sadler May 1963

A Field Study Of Miscible Displacement In Saturated Soils, Lloyd Dowley Mcfadden Sadler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Extensive research has been carried out in both field and laboratory to explain water and solute movement under both saturated and unsaturated conditions. The importance of such work is obvious, since any attempt at exploring land reclamation by leaching or nutrient movement in plant feeding (to name only two) is subject to interpretations and theories of moisture flow.

Water flow through soil during reclamation by leaching can be termed miscible displacement since soil water and leaching water do not have a distinct fluid-fluid interface and will physically mix. It is probable that miscible displacement investigations can contribute to an understanding …

Influence Of Temperature And Rate Of Heat Penetration On Some Factors In Charcoal Broiled Porterhouse Steak And Ground Beef, Geraldine Irvine May 1963

Influence Of Temperature And Rate Of Heat Penetration On Some Factors In Charcoal Broiled Porterhouse Steak And Ground Beef, Geraldine Irvine

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Charcoal broiling is becoming an increasingly popular method for cooking meat. Little scientific work has been done in this area. Information presently available on charcoal broiling consists of broad generalizations which have developed from trial and error testing. With the current interest in charcoal broiling, there is a need for more factual, scientific information as to the proper procedure.

Cooking method affects palatability and nutritive value of meat. Chemical and physical changes occur during the cooking process and the reactions which take place are not fully known or understood. Each cooking method has a specific effect upon meat due to …

Effects Of Beaver On Stream Flow And Water Quality, James W. Bates May 1963

Effects Of Beaver On Stream Flow And Water Quality, James W. Bates

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water, one of the major resources of the western lands, controls the economy and expansion of the communities. Industry, agriculture, timber, livestock, game and home water needs are all dependent upon a steady and continued flow of water from wells, springs, and rivers. Water is derived from one source, precipitation, which occurs in the form of rain and snow. Watersheds which are properly managed accumulate a substantial snow pack during the winter which is the life-giving source of water for our springs.

The Utah Water and Power Report (1948) indicates the annual precipitation over the entire state of Utah averaged …

Biosynthesis Of Infectious Cucumber Mosaic Virus Ribonucleic Acid In A Cell-Free Medium, Men Hui Lee May 1963

Biosynthesis Of Infectious Cucumber Mosaic Virus Ribonucleic Acid In A Cell-Free Medium, Men Hui Lee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The mechanism of biosynthesis of the nucleic acids, RNA, remained obscure until 1955 when the announcement was made (14) that an enzyme isolated from bacterial sources catalyzes the synthesis of ribopolynucleotides from nucleoside-5'-diphosphates. It has been shown that the biosynthesis of polynucleotides occurs through the stepwise polymerization of nucleoside-5'-diphosphates or triphosphates. A great deal of research over the past few years has indicated that isolated nuclei from both animal (1) and plant (19) sources are able to synthesize ribonucleic acids in vitro (18).

Some Agronomic Aspects Of Seed Chalcid Bruchophagus Roddi Gussakovsii Resistance In Alfalfas, James H. Thomas May 1963

Some Agronomic Aspects Of Seed Chalcid Bruchophagus Roddi Gussakovsii Resistance In Alfalfas, James H. Thomas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Previous studies have indicated that certain alfalfa varieties and clones are more resistant than others to alfalfa seed chalcid damage. This resistance varies in all cases and data on infestations indicate that agronomic characteristics may be responsible for some of the apparent resistance. Since this is a major pest in alfalfa seed producing areas, and cultural and chemical controls have been essentially ineffective, it was decided to determine if resistance was associated with certain pod characteristics in order to find a partial solution to the problem.

Molybdenum Chelates Of 8-Hydroxyquinoline-5-Sulfonic Acid, Ellis Ray Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Man has had an intense interest in the role of enzymes in biological reactions for many years. The basic question -- how enzymes are able to function so efficiently -- remains as yet largely unanswered.

Only in recent years has it been discovered that molybdenum is essential for certain biological processes. For example, traces of molybdenum added to certain soils have resulted in spectacular plant growth (1). Four enzymes are known to contain molybdenum: nitrate reductase (2), hydrogenase (3), xanthine oxidase (4), and aldehyde oxidase (5). In each of these enzymes riboflavin is also present as the coenzyme FAD (flavin …

Relations Between Transpiration, Leaf Temperatures, And Some Environmental Factors, Ronald Kay Tew May 1962

Relations Between Transpiration, Leaf Temperatures, And Some Environmental Factors, Ronald Kay Tew

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Transpiration is the loss of water in vapor form from a plant. This is essentially the same process as evaporation except that it is modified by plant structure. Large quantities of water are removed from the soil, transferred through the conducting tissues of the plant, and dissipated into the air each day. As soon as the water is lost to the atmosphere, it becomes unavailable for human use.

Post-Harvest Storage Studies With Selected Fruits, Amrik Singh Dhaliwal May 1962

Post-Harvest Storage Studies With Selected Fruits, Amrik Singh Dhaliwal

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It has been estimated that one-fourth of the fresh fruits harvested are never consumed because of spoilage. This spoilage amounts to many thousands of tons of fruits which are valued annually at several million dollars. Several factors are responsible for the post-harvest spoilage of fruits, namely, pathological, physiological, and mechanical.

Men in the past have used various methods to control pathological spoilage of foods. The recent development of nuclear radiation, antibiotics, fungicides, and packaging films provides new methods for prolonging the shelf-life of many fruits. These may prove important in countries like India where refrigeration facilities are not readily available …

The Effects Of Radium On Certain Goldfish Blood Constituents And Organs, D. Wayne Linn May 1962

The Effects Of Radium On Certain Goldfish Blood Constituents And Organs, D. Wayne Linn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Background radioactivity from radium has long existed in ground and surface waters of the United States, but in the last 15 years radium has become a consequential unnatural contaminant of waters (Coulomb, 1955; Rone, 1952; Schlundt, 1910; Scott and Barker, 1956; Scott, 1961; and Tsivoglou et al., 1958). The onset of the atomic age initiated the increased processing of uranium ore for its uranium content. Radium is a daughter product and a by-product of uranium ore and its purification (Glasstone, 1958; and Tsivoglou et al., 1958). The uranium refinery wastes are released into streams in which all forms of aquatic …

Some Factors Influencing The Response Of Halogeton Glomeratus To 2,4-Dichloropheloxyacetic Acid, Eugene H. Cronin May 1962

Some Factors Influencing The Response Of Halogeton Glomeratus To 2,4-Dichloropheloxyacetic Acid, Eugene H. Cronin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Halogeton glomeratus (M. Bieb) C. A. Mey. was introduced into the cold desert of North America sometime prior to 1934. The first collections were made near Wells, Nevada in 1935 (Zappetini, 1953) and the plant now occupies in excess of 10 million acres. The plant is poisonous to livestock. The toxic substances in halogeton are sodium and potassium oxalates which account for 17 to 30 percent of its dry weight, depending on the time of year it is collected (Dye, 1956, and Williams, 1960a). Since the plant is a pioneer invader on disturbed sites in the salt-desert shrub vegetation of …

Upper Cretaceous Stratigraphy Of The Central Part Of Utah, Fredric R. Van De Graaff

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Rocks of Late Cretaceous age in the central part of Utah are dominantly elastic. In general, the sediments in the west are of conglomerate and sandstone of continental origin; the sediments in the east are of sandstone and shale of marine origin, These rocks were deposited at or near the western shore of a sea which extended from the Arctic to the Gulf of Mexico. The strand line lay in a general northern direction through Utah with land to the west and marine water to the east.

Selected Insecticides In The Control Of Invertebrates Possibly Associated With Avian Botulism, J. Larry Haddock May 1962

Selected Insecticides In The Control Of Invertebrates Possibly Associated With Avian Botulism, J. Larry Haddock

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Avian botulism or ''western duck sickness" has long been a major problem on duck marshes in the western part of the United States. This has been demonstrated to result from the ingestion of products of metabolism of bacterial cells of Clostridium botulinum type C. These products when ingested by waterfowl act as neurotoxins (Coburn, 1942). Studies have shown that many animal tissues are readily utilized as culture media by Cl. botulinum type C (Bell et al., 1955).

Since 1955 investigations have indicated a close relation between the occurrence of avian botulism and invertebrate population levels. It is thought that when …

The Effect Of Chelates On Phosphorus Availability And Mobility, Salah Ahmed Tahoun May 1962

The Effect Of Chelates On Phosphorus Availability And Mobility, Salah Ahmed Tahoun

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Soil-phosphorus relations and plant-phosphorus relations have attracted the interest of many investigators since Liebig introduced his famous theory about the importance of the mineral matters to the plant in 1840. It was soon realized that phosphorus nutrition was a problem not easily solved for two reasons. 1. The added phosphorus fertilizers, soon after soil application are converted by some reactions in the soil to complex compounds far less soluble, consequently less available to the plant. Conclusions about this process led to controversial debates until it was discovered that a general statement covering all soils was impossible since the reactions involved …
