All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A new kind of technology combines making in the physical world with computing in the virtual world. These technologies are simultaneously physical and virtual, require the design of artifacts like computer programs and the crafting of physical components. Combining approaches encourage youth to participate in computing who might not otherwise be interested by harnessing existing hobbies and interests. Because fluency with computing is important to success in a 21st century society, increasing the ways in which young people can experience and connect to computing is important. Computational thinking, and with it the process of debugging computer code, is an example …

Linking Temporal And Spatial Variability Of Millennial And Decadal-Scale Sediment Yield To Aquatic Habitat In The Columbia River Basin, Elijah Portugal May 2014

Linking Temporal And Spatial Variability Of Millennial And Decadal-Scale Sediment Yield To Aquatic Habitat In The Columbia River Basin, Elijah Portugal

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Historically the Columbia River was amongst the most productive salmonidbearing watersheds in North America. Currently, salmonid populations have collapsed and are estimated at ten percent of historic levels. Because of this, there are thirteen, Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed distinct population segments within the Columbia River Basin (CRB). The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) operates a substantial number of hydroelectric dams within the CRB. As the dams effectively block anadromy and are thought to be extremely detrimental to the long-term persistence of salmonid populations within the CRB, the BPA funds a series of programs to mitigate the impacts of dam operation. …

Nonlinear Weir Hydraulics, Mitchell R. Dabling May 2014

Nonlinear Weir Hydraulics, Mitchell R. Dabling

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A hydraulically undersized control structure (i.e., an emergency dam spillway) could result in water overtopping a dam or riverbanks. To increase hydraulic capacity and reduce flooding risk, nonlinear weirs are being used to replace undersized linear weirs during control structure rehabilitation. The complex geometry of a nonlinear weir creates an infinite number of designs and three-dimensional flow patterns. This study investigates four subjects to further knowledge on two types of nonlinear weir, the piano key and labyrinth.

Weir submergence is a condition when the downstream water level of a weir exceeds the weir crest elevation, and can influence the head-discharge …

Ringtail Distribution, Dermatoglyphics, And Diet In Zion National Park, Utah, Adrian Argie Roadman May 2014

Ringtail Distribution, Dermatoglyphics, And Diet In Zion National Park, Utah, Adrian Argie Roadman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Current scientific knowledge of the ringtail (Bassariscus astutus) is limited, thus impeding appropriate management decisions. Ringtails in Zion National Park, Utah, are rarely seen, but are involved in increasing occurrences of negative interactions with park visitors and employees such as food theft and denning in buildings, interactions which are harmful to both parties. To manage this conflict, an update to the general knowledge about the status of the population is required as the only previous study on ringtails in this area was conducted in the 1960s. Using noninvasive techniques provides dependable large-scale population information. I used two noninvasive detection methods …

Biophysically-Based Measurement Of Plant Water Status Using Canopy Temperature, Christopher K. Parry May 2014

Biophysically-Based Measurement Of Plant Water Status Using Canopy Temperature, Christopher K. Parry

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Precision irrigation scheduling is one approach that can conserve water by supplying crops with the minimum amount of water needed for sufficient vegetative growth and final crop yield. Improved methods for irrigation scheduling are needed for arid regions that rely mainly on irrigation for crop water needs, and humid regions that supplement water received from precipitation with added irrigation. Methods that directly determine plant physiological responses to water availability have potential to be significantly more sensitive and accurate than indirect approaches like soil moisture measurement. Stomatal conductance is a rapid physiological response to leaf water potential.

Stomatal conductance in single …

Systematics And Behavioral Evolution Of Spider Wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae), Cecilia Waichert Monteiro May 2014

Systematics And Behavioral Evolution Of Spider Wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae), Cecilia Waichert Monteiro

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Spider wasps form a diverse and widespread group of stinging wasps. Although all Pompilidae have similar life history characteristics, there is considerable variation in nesting behavior modes and, thus, this family could be useful for learning about the evolution of nesting behavior in insects. The nesting behavior of many species is well known, the family is monophyletic and easily recognized, and certain species have some degree of pre-sociality, i.e., communal nesting. All these factors suggest that the Pompilidae are an important model group for understanding mechanisms and patterns of behavioral evolution.

Pompilidae, however, are rarely studied and their research potential …

Pathway Pioneer: A Web-Based Metabolic Network Layout Extension, Harsh Dosi May 2014

Pathway Pioneer: A Web-Based Metabolic Network Layout Extension, Harsh Dosi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The number and complexity of genome-scale metabolic networks have seen a rapid growth in the past 10 years. Today, more than 450 genome-scale metabolic reconstructions of biological systems are characterized and existing models are extended. With the growing influence of these reconstructions on biomedical and biological research, the field has observed a shift from an inward focus on method development to an outward focus on application development.

Static state analysis of metabolic networks in textual format is too cumbersome and time consuming. In addition, visualization and arrangement of these networks to facilitate their analysis is an open research problem. A …

Influence Of Stand Composition On Soil Organic Carbon Stabilization And Biochemistry In Aspen And Conifer Forests Of Utah, Mercedes Román Dobarco

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Social concern about climate change and the elevated level of atmospheric CO2 demands understanding carbon (C) storage and dynamics in forest soils, especially since soils are the largest C reservoir in terrestrial ecosystems, storing two thirds of total C. Quacking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) is an iconic species in western United States that offers multiple ecosystem services, such as habitat and forage for wildlife and cattle, biodiversity, water yield, and C storage. A decline in quaking aspen cover has been documented during the last decades, possibly due to fire suppression and ungulate browsing. A shift from aspen- to conifer-dominated …

Stem Development, Seeding Rate, And Establishment Of Birdsfoot Trefoil (Lotus Corniculatus) For Organic, Grazing-Based Dairies, Sara Hunt May 2014

Stem Development, Seeding Rate, And Establishment Of Birdsfoot Trefoil (Lotus Corniculatus) For Organic, Grazing-Based Dairies, Sara Hunt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Birdsfoot trefoil (BFT, Lotus corniculatus L.) is a non-bloating, productive forage legume well suited to grazing-based ruminant production. This thesis presents three studies conducted in the Mountain West applicable to organic management and cultivation of BFT. The first is an analysis of lignification in BFT stems that supports recommendations to harvest BFT at approximately 6 weeks of regrowth, or early bloom. Lignification decreases digestibility and is correlated with high shear force required for grazing animals to break BFT stems. The process of stem lignification was observed by harvesting increasingly mature stems; cutting thin sections of the sixth stem internode, which …

Producing An Ovine Model Of Cystic Fibrosis, Kira Perry Morgado May 2014

Producing An Ovine Model Of Cystic Fibrosis, Kira Perry Morgado

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disease that significantly affects quality of life and lifespan. There are currently no effective animal models of CF that mimic the human disease state. This prevents the development of pharmaceutical treatments for patients. Sheep have been considered for a useful animal model because of their size, life expectancy, and similarities in their anatomy and physiology. In order to generate a sheep transgenic model to study CF we have produced two Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) gene targeting DNA vectors containing large regions of homology to the CFTR gene in sheep. One of …

Constraints On Patterns Of Abundance And Aggregation In Biological Systems, Kenneth J. Locey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Understanding the mechanisms that structure biological systems is a primary goal of biology. My research shows that the biological structure is constrained in important ways by general variables such as the number of base pairs in a genome and the number of individuals and species in a community. I used a combination of macroecology, bioinformatics, statistics, mathematics, and advanced computing to pursue my research and published several peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and open-source software as a result.

I was funded through a combination of fellowships and scholarships awarded by the Utah State University School of Graduate Studies, College of Science, and …

An Algorithm To Recognize Multi-Stable Behavior From An Ensemble Of Stochastic Simulation Runs, Eduardo Monzon Dec 2013

An Algorithm To Recognize Multi-Stable Behavior From An Ensemble Of Stochastic Simulation Runs, Eduardo Monzon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Synthetic biological designers are demanding tools to help with the design and verification process of new biological models. Some of the most common tools available aggregate multiple simulation results into one “clean” trajectory that hopefully is representative of the system’s behavior. However, for systems exhibiting multiple stable states, these techniques fail to show all the possible trajectories of the system. This work introduces a method capable of detecting the presence of more than one “typical” trajectory in a system, which can also be integrated with other available simulation tools.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Interactions among commercial fisheries and birds have been studied in open ocean ecosystems and at aquaculture facilities. On the Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah, USA, a commercial harvest of brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) eggs (i.e. cysts) occurs annually during fall and winter. Coinciding with commercial harvest is the use of the GSL by millions of waterbirds which has the potential to result in conflict among industry and birds. The objectives of my research were to examine fall and winter ecology of birds using the GSL and interactions with the brine shrimp cyst harvest. I examined the influence of temperature and …

Substrate Binding And Reduction Mechanism Of Molybdenum Nitrogenase, Zhiyong Yang Dec 2013

Substrate Binding And Reduction Mechanism Of Molybdenum Nitrogenase, Zhiyong Yang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As a key constituent of proteins, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules, nitrogen is essential to all living organisms including human beings. Dinitrogen represents the largest pool of nitrogen, about 79% of the Earth’s atmosphere, yet it is unusable by most living organisms due to its inertness. There are two ways to fix this inert dinitrogen to usable ammonia. One is the industrial Haber-Bosch process, which needs to be conducted at high temperature and pressure. This process uses a lot of the non-renewable fossil fuel as the energy source. The other major pathway is the biological nitrogen fixation carried out by …

Utilizing Municipal And Industrial Wastes For The Production Of Bioproducts: From Metagenomics To Bioproducts, Joshua T. Ellis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Developing renewable sources of energy is gaining interest due to limited supplies, rising costs, and environmental impacts of exploiting fossil fuels. Biosolvents such as acetone, butanol, and ethanol are attractive sources of fuel which can aid in replacing our dependence on foreign oil. Butanol is of particular interest due to its ability to directly replace gasoline, thus considered a drop-in-fuel. Biological hydrogen and methane gas are also attractive energy sources that can lower dependence on fossil energy.

This research focused on incorporating DNA sequencing technologies in parallel with fermentation methods for understanding and producing energy. The natural environment provides diverse …

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a potent neurotoxin found in a variety of species. This toxin has long been of concern to human health as it is found in puffer fish, which are a delicacy in Japan. Since the distribution of this toxin is so great, there are many questions regarding the evolution and ecology of organisms that have TTX. My research has focused on further investigating three topics with this research: production, predation, and identification of novel TTX bearing taxa. In order to perform this research I first refined a Competitive Inhibition Enzymatic Immunoassay methodology to quantify levels of TTX in …

Longitudinal Analysis Of Resource Competitiveness And Homelessness Among Young Adults, Mathew F. Prante Aug 2013

Longitudinal Analysis Of Resource Competitiveness And Homelessness Among Young Adults, Mathew F. Prante

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Homelessness occurs when individual resources are not enough for the demands of a given environment. It is not an arbitrary state of being, or a class of individual, it is a marker that signals a person has fallen to the extreme low end of a continuum of poverty. Perceiving homelessness as a point on a spectrum versus a discrete state, leads to research and explanations concerning how someone goes from being housed to being homeless, which can lead to more meaningful results than conceptualizing the homeless population as a class of people. It allows for the exploration of identification markers …

Modeling Habitat Use Of A Fringe Greater Sage-Grouse Population At Multiple Spatial Scales, Anya Cheyenne Burnett Aug 2013

Modeling Habitat Use Of A Fringe Greater Sage-Grouse Population At Multiple Spatial Scales, Anya Cheyenne Burnett
