Understanding Local Perceptions And The Role Of Historical Context In Ecotourism Development: A Case Study Of St. Kitts, Amber Greening
Understanding Local Perceptions And The Role Of Historical Context In Ecotourism Development: A Case Study Of St. Kitts, Amber Greening
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Ecotourism is a popular tool for the conservation of fragile ecosystems and local development of the communities surrounding them. It is widely argued that the key to effective and sustainable ecotourism programs relies on the depth of community involvement and support. This research reveals a better understanding of community members’ perceptions of ecotourism and conservation, and how these perceptions potentially influence participation in current and future ecotourism projects within the villages of Cayon and Keys on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts. Data were collected through several qualitative methods including: face-to-face surveys with Cayon and Keys villagers; interviews with government …
Habitat Characteristics Of Mexican Spotted Owls (Strix Occidentalis Lucida) In The Canyonlands Of Southern Utah, Leah R. Lewis
Habitat Characteristics Of Mexican Spotted Owls (Strix Occidentalis Lucida) In The Canyonlands Of Southern Utah, Leah R. Lewis
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Mexican Spotted Owls are considered a threatened species by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Therefore, they must be properly managed and protected by federal and state agencies. In this study I explored the habitat characteristics used by Mexican Spotted Owls in the canyonlands region of southern Utah. I spent three summer field seasons (May-September) from 2010 – 2013 locating Mexican Spotted Owl sites and measuring vegetative and geologic features at these sites. I found that canyon width and very tall vegetation influenced Mexican Spotted Owl presence, suggesting that these owls prefer narrow canyons that are vegetated with trees.

Cyber-Physical Systems Enabled By Unmanned Aerial System-Based Personal Remote Sensing: Data Mission Quality-Centric Design Architectures, Calvin Coopmans
Cyber-Physical Systems Enabled By Unmanned Aerial System-Based Personal Remote Sensing: Data Mission Quality-Centric Design Architectures, Calvin Coopmans
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the coming 20 years, unmanned aerial data collection will be of great importance to many sectors of civilian life. Of these systems, Personal Remote Sensing (PRS) Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUASs), or “data drones,” will need special attention due to their low cost and high value for farming, scientific, and search-and-rescue uses, among countless others. Cyber-physical systems (large-scale, pervasive automated systems that tightly couple sensing and actuation through technology and the environment) can use sUASs as sensors and actuators, leading to even greater possibilities for benefit from sUASs. However, this nascent robotic technology of small unmanned aerial systems (sUASs) …

Participants were also asked to complete the following scales: Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Self-Construal Scale, the Case Inventory, The Adolescent Autonomy Questionnaire, and The Modified Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment.
It is suggested that text messaging is more strongly related to self-esteem when texting is placed as the …
Estimating Baseline Population Parameters Of Urban And Wildland Black Bear Populations Using A Dna-Based Capture-Mark-Recapture Approach In Mono County, California, Jonathan L. Fusaro
Estimating Baseline Population Parameters Of Urban And Wildland Black Bear Populations Using A Dna-Based Capture-Mark-Recapture Approach In Mono County, California, Jonathan L. Fusaro
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Prior to European settlement, black bear (Ursus americanus) were far less abundant in the state of California. Estimates from statewide harvest data indicate the California black bear population has tripled in the last 3 decades. Bears inhabit areas they formally never occurred (e.g., urban environments) and populations that were at historically low densities are now at high densities. Though harvest data are useful and widely used as an index for black bear population size and population demographics statewide, it lacks the ability to produce precise estimates of abundance and density at local scales or account for the numerous …

Molecular Systematics, Historical Biogeography, And Evolution Of Spider Wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae), Juanita Rodriguez
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The study of the diversity and classification of any group of organisms provides a foundation for further scientific studies in ecology, evolution, and conservation. Insects are among the most diverse organisms that inhabit the planet, but knowledge of their diversity and classification is still limited. One understudied group of insects is spider wasps. These are solitary parasitoids that use one spider to lay a single egg. There are approximately 5,000 described species, and many more to be described. Unfortunately, fewer than 10 scientists worldwide study these insects. One reason the group has not been very well studied is the difficulty …

Biopsychosocial Variables Predict Compensation And Medical Costs Of Radiofrequency Neurotomy In Utah Workers' Compensation Patients, Amie L. Smith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Back pain is one of the most expensive medical conditions to treat. There has been a great deal of research showing that back pain surgery is expensive, but less is known about the costs of less-invasive spine procedures such as radiofrequency neurotomy. Radiofrequency neurotomy is used to treat facet joint pain and typically offers temporary pain relief by coagulating the affected nerve with radiofrequency waves to block pain messages from reaching the brain. This study aimed to document the costs of radiofrequency neurotomy in a group of participants who received the procedure through the Workers’ Compensation Fund of Utah (WCFU). …

The water quality of the Jordan River has been the subject of a Total Maximum Daily Load study conducted under the direction of the Utah Department of Environmental Quality's Water Quality Division (DWQ). They have determined the oxygen impairment issues in the river are most likely tied to the amount of organic material entering the river from various sources.
The focus of the study conducted by Jacob Richardson was organic material that enters the Salt Lake City storm drain system, and is eventually released into the Jordan River. He found that leaves, grass, and wood particles that enter the storm …
Specific Learning Disabilities: Beliefs About The Construct, Identification Methods, And Job Satisfaction Among Practicing School Psychologists, Joseph M. Cottrell
Specific Learning Disabilities: Beliefs About The Construct, Identification Methods, And Job Satisfaction Among Practicing School Psychologists, Joseph M. Cottrell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Students with specific learning disabilities (SLDs) account for approximately 40% of all students receiving special education services. Debate among professionals regarding the causes of SLDs and the most appropriate methods used to identify SLDs persists. This debate may be related to the increase in prevalence of SLDs since the implementation of special education law in 1975. There are three prominent theories regarding the cause of SLDs: (a) environmental theory, (b) biological theory, and (c) interactional theory. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) allows school districts to implement the following SLD identification procedures: (a) the IQ-Achievement discrepancy method, (b) response-to-intervention …
Mothers On The Market: Employer Hiring Practices And Motherhood Penalties, Elizabeth Kiester
Mothers On The Market: Employer Hiring Practices And Motherhood Penalties, Elizabeth Kiester
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
While gender inequity in wages is often discussed in the media by politicians, the motherhood wage penalty receives substantially less attention. This distinct wage penalty suggests that women with children suffer a wage penalty separate from women without children. In addition, there is an employment gap between mothers and nonmothers indicating that mothers are less likely to be employed. While some argue that this is a matter of choice, I contend that mothers may face unique barriers that deny them access to the labor market. I tested this theory in two ways and in two states; Utah and California. First, …

Activated Carbon Decreases Invasive Plant Growth By Mediating Plant-Microbe Interactions, Nicole E. Nolan
Activated Carbon Decreases Invasive Plant Growth By Mediating Plant-Microbe Interactions, Nicole E. Nolan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
To restore lands invaded by dense, non-native vegetation, it may be necessary to develop targeted restoration tools than can remove the mechanism used by these non-native species as a competitive advantage. Activated carbon (AC) is one such tool, with the ability to disrupt the mechanisms of plant to plant communication (allelopathy) and positive plant to microbe communication commonly used by non-native species. Previous studies have shown the success of high concentrations, 1000g/m2, of AC in native plant community restoration on a small scale. Here, our goals are twofold: first, to test AC effectiveness in restoring desirable plant communities …
System Identification Of A Small Low-Cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Using Flight Data From Low-Cost Sensors, Nathan V. Hoffer
System Identification Of A Small Low-Cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Using Flight Data From Low-Cost Sensors, Nathan V. Hoffer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Remote sensing has usually been done with satellites and manned aircraft. While they can be useful, satellites and manned aircraft have issues in how quickly you can get data, process it, and go back to get more data. Small low-cost unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) overcome these issues. To collect precise data a precise model of the UAV is needed to develop the autopilot, make sure the aircraft flies well, and does not break. One method of making a model is system identification (system ID). In this thesis system ID of a small low-cost fixed-wing T-tail UAV is done. The equations …

Father-Child Play Behaviors And Child Emotion Regulation, Amanda Hagman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Most of us have learned ways to manage how, when, and to what extent we experience emotions. These emotion regulation skills are habitual and may seem innate, but for infants and young children these abilities are basic, limited, and unrefined. Developing emotion regulation skills is an important learning task for infants and toddlers; the role of fathers in emotion regulation learning is a growing area of research. This research takes a closer look at early childhood and how father-child interactions may contribute to child emotion regulation.
Theory suggests that during interactions with their parents, children learn emotion regulation skills, but …

Severed Hands As Symbols Of Humanity In Legend And Popular Narratives, Scott White
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Modern scholarly theories of oral folk narrative suggest that urban legends contain expressions of cultural beliefs that can be understood both through the contexts in which these stories are told and through the elements of the stories that remain constant across multiple tellings by various narrators. This study centers exclusively on stories and popular culture products that utilize missing or damaged fingers, hands, or arms, in order to identify the cultural values that are attached to hands in American culture. These stories in particular were chosen because the severed hand was perceived at the onset to be a common element …

Nitrogen Cycling In The Rhizosphere Of Cheatgrass And Crested Wheatgrass: Contributions Of Root Exudates And Senescence, Kendalynn A. Morris
Nitrogen Cycling In The Rhizosphere Of Cheatgrass And Crested Wheatgrass: Contributions Of Root Exudates And Senescence, Kendalynn A. Morris
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Cheatgrass is an invasive weed that has come to dominate large areas of the western United States. Once an ecosystem has been converted to a cheatgrass monoculture, it is extremely difficult to restore native vegetation. Cheatgrass negatively impacts wildlife and increases wildfire frequency and intensity. Understanding how cheatgrass so effectively invades western ecosystems is essential to turning the tide of invasion. One possible key to cheatgrass’ success is alteration of soil nutrient cycling. The goal of this study is to explore how nitrogen (N) may accumulate in cheatgrass soils via redistribution of N within soil N pools. To accomplish this …

Trophic Status, Energetic Demands, And Factors Affecting Lahontan Cutthroat Trout Distribution In Pyramid Lake, Nevada, Nicholas A. Heredia
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The progression of human development across the landscape has caused declines to both terrestrial and aquatic fauna. Many fishes, specifically native salmonids, have seen reductions in both population size and geographic distribution resulting from reduced habitat, overharvest, and the introduction of non-native predators and competitors. A native North American fish particularly hard hit by these types of actions, Lahontan cutthroat trout, are now limited to less than 10% of their historical habitat, and currently occupy only half of the lakes that they once occupied.
In Pyramid Lake, Nevada, where Lahontan cutthroat trout were once locally extinct, due to overfishing, water …
