Research on biosynthesis of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) ribonucleic acid (RNA) in vitro has been reported by Cochran, et al; Karasek and Schramm; Kim and Wildman; Cornuet and Astier; and Tongur and Baland in. It has been postulated that the replication of a number of viruses containing single-stranded RNA is accompanied by the formation of a virus-specific double-stranded helical RNA, the replicative form. This has been demonstrated both for animal and bacterial viruses including MS2. The double helical structure of purified replicative form of MS2 was established by X-ray diffraction studies. Deoxyribonucleic acid isolated from bacteriophage λ can infect Escherichia coli K12 in the presence of adsorbed helper phage (Kaiser and Hogness, 1960; Kaiser, 1962). The manner in which λ DNA enters the cell and the possible role of helper phage in the penetration process is still not clear. Kinetic studies conducted in this laboratory during the initial stages of infection by λ DNA demonstrate a requirement for helper function during the penetration of an infectious molecule. Further investigation into this problem is needed and was the major objective of this study.

The salt content of cheese is usually determined by the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) (26) procedure. This method is based upon the determination of chloride in the sample, and results are expressed as per cent sodium chloride. The presence of chlorides in cheese other than sodium chloride would introduce error in the results. However, in practice this is not serious except where relatively large amounts of CaCl₂ are added to the cheese milk.

These diseases appear to be related to abnormalities in lipid metabolism. Since sex differences have been noted in lipid metabolism, the role of steroid hormones has been under investigation in a number of laboratories. Coronary heart disease occurs only rarely in women during the reproductive phase. This work describes the extent and pattern of some black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) movements and areas of activity in northern Utah and their relationship to sex and age, and season of the year.

Black-tailed jackrabbits are the most common lagomorphs in much of the western United States, particularly in that vegetational association described by McDougal (1908) as the sagebrush desert. Furthermore, Adams and Adams (1959) have suggested a correlation between sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) incidence and jackrabbit density.

The ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus incana) inhabits much of the deciduous woodland of northern and central Utah. Its distribution is confined mainly to the Wasatch and Uinta mountain ranges. It has been observed in willows (Salix spp.) at 5, 000 feet elevation and in Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) at 9,000 feet.

Due to the fact that Ca deficiency is most common in acid soils, the majority of the experimentation has in the past been largely confined to acid soils and their soil-Ca-plant relationships. Molybdenum compounds present a series of baffling chemical puzzles. By no means are all of these yet even clearly defined and many may never be. This complexity results from the ability of molybdenum to form six different oxidation states, which can possess three different coordination numbers. Furthermore, molybdenum compounds readily disproportionate to yield mixed valence compounds; and finally, molybdate ions readily aggregate in solution to form a variety of polyions by polymerization-condensation reactions which are controlled by pH and the concentration of the system.
