Cryostat System For Spacecraft Materials Testing, Justin Dekany
Cryostat System For Spacecraft Materials Testing, Justin Dekany
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
An existing space environment simulation test chamber used in the study of electron emission, sample charging and discharge, electrostatic discharge and arcing, electron transport, and luminescence of spacecraft materials now has extended temperature control capabilities. By incorporating a two-stage, closed-cycle helium cryostat, it is now possible to simulate the temperature typical spacecraft will experience when in orbit, ranging from < 40 K to > 450 K. The system was designed to maintain compatibility with an existing ultrahigh vacuum chamber that can simulate diverse space environments. This vacuum chamber can simulate space environment conditions by producing the same pressure, amount of electrons, electromagnetic radiation and temperature …
Partially Closed Valve Effects On Electromagnetic Flow Meter Accuracy, Jordan Clark Jarrett
Partially Closed Valve Effects On Electromagnetic Flow Meter Accuracy, Jordan Clark Jarrett
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
As the need to manage water resources increases, the ability to accurately measure use becomes crucial. In industry, measurement inaccuracies can cost either the
supplier or consumer large amounts of money or even result in a depleted resource. Generally, flow meters need a flow profile to be fully developed so to optimize
measurement accuracy.
In order to produce accurate measurements, most flow meters require a straight section of pipe immediately upstream of the meter. The straight pipe helps to develop the flow profile and produces flow conditions that are as ideal as possible. In many field installations, space restrictions lead …
Global Thermospheric Response To Geomagnetic Storms, Padmashri Suresh
Global Thermospheric Response To Geomagnetic Storms, Padmashri Suresh
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The terrestrial atmospheric region between the altitudes of 90 km and 600 km is known as the thermosphere region. The thermosphere is continuously modulated by particle emissions and magnetic fields that originate from the sun. These fields and emissions are intensified during events known as geomagnetic storms which alter the state of the thermosphere by dumping gigawatts of energy. This energy is mostly deposited in the lower thermosphere regions of 150 km and below and can potentially have hazardous repercussions on the technological assets of mankind. These storms can disrupt radio communication systems, interrupt electric power systems, threaten the safety …
Stable Isotopes And The Ecology And Physiology Of Reptiles, Andrew M. Durso
Stable Isotopes And The Ecology And Physiology Of Reptiles, Andrew M. Durso
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
When animals don’t have enough food, they have to “choose” between “spending” their limited energy on themselves or on their offspring. Biologists think that reptiles can make this choice quickly in response to different environments. But, it can be hard to study these choices because it is hard to convert between, for example, the number of eggs laid and the speed of healing a wound. By using stable isotope chemistry, we can collect more detailed and comparable information about how lizards and other animals spend their limited resources than with any other method. For example, lizards in the wild have …
Effects Of Acceptance And Commitment Therapy On Impulsive Decision Making, Kate L. Morrison
Effects Of Acceptance And Commitment Therapy On Impulsive Decision Making, Kate L. Morrison
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
For some people, decision making is more often influenced by immediate gratification, rather than what is best for them in the long term. This study intended to change how those people made decisions, in order to help them live meaningful lives. This was done through eight sessions of a treatment called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT; in comparison to no treatment). Forty adults were randomly assigned to either treatment or a no treatment control. The treatment did not change the way people responded on the decision making measures, although the treatment reduced problematic behaviors and obstacles to living a meaningful …

Highway inventory plays an important role in highway management. Governments and agencies have been employing different kinds of methodologies for highway inventory. Existing methodologies include field inventory, photo/video log, integrated global positioning system (GPS)/ global information system (GIS) mapping, aerial/satellite photography, terrestrial light detection and ranging (LiDAR), mobile LiDAR, and airborne LiDAR. Each has advantages and disadvantages as well as limitations in collecting road inventory data. This paper mainly focused on the application of airborne data collection method.
Four highway sections in Utah were mapped in this experiment: one section on Interstate 84 (I-84), two sections on Interstate 15 (I-15 …
Diversity-Related Experiences And Academic Performance Among Ethnic Minority College Students, Amanda K. Blume
Diversity-Related Experiences And Academic Performance Among Ethnic Minority College Students, Amanda K. Blume
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Students of color experience numerous educational disadvantages compared to White students. These disadvantages begin in elementary school and continue into college and adulthood. Ethnic minority students typically have less resources available to them than White students and are typically less prepared for college—academically and financially. Once students of color enroll in college, they face additional barriers due to discrimination and negative attitudes towards diversity. These factors play a key role in student engagement and persistence. The campus racial climate of a university, defined as the overall racial environment of the campus, has been shown to strongly influence students’ feelings of …

Hybridization, Population Genetic Structure And Gene Expression In The Genus Boechera, Martin Peter Schilling
Hybridization, Population Genetic Structure And Gene Expression In The Genus Boechera, Martin Peter Schilling
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
When we look at life on earth, we can see a lot of different life forms, but we still do not fully understand how these different life forms came to be and at which points in time these life forms began to be different enough from each other so we could call them by different names, or species. Some groups of species on earth, especially plants, seem to reproduce with each other, even though they are already very different from each other so that we call them different species. This process is called hybridization, and it can stir up the …

Family And Center Childcare Providers: Correlates Among Mathematics Anxiety/Attitudes Toward Mathematics, Teacher Self-Efficacy, And Other Factors, Shawnee M. Hendershot
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Previous experiences with mathematics, particularly negative ones, can influence an individual’s attitudes toward mathematics. Children’s first experiences with mathematics are often in their childcare settings. Elementary teachers appear to have more mathematics anxiety than other professionals, but the level of mathematics anxiety among childcare providers is not known. The presence of mathematics anxiety correlates with lower teacher self-efficacy or the teacher’s belief of how effective he/she is in influencing a student’s learning. Grounded in Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy, this study examined the level of mathematics anxiety and teacher self-efficacy among 122 licensed Utah childcare providers in center and family home …

An Economic Analysis Of Factors Affecting Pre-Weaned Dairy Calf Growth And Profit Optimization In Dairy Calf Operations, Vincent T. Hess
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study was an extension of a study submitted in April 2014 by Sheldon D. Holt entitled “Ambient Temperature, Calf Intakes, and Weight Gains on Preweaned Dairy Calves”.
A major component in a profitable dairy operation is the raising of female calves as replacement heifers; but since no direct income is generated by calf raising alone, it is often overlooked as a potential profit area on a dairy farm. Calf management practices that ultimately impact milk productivity and reproductive performance during a heifer’s lifetime begin at birth. This study examines the effect of calf starter intake on calf growth, measuring …

An Analysis Of The Feasibility Of Anaerobic Digestion On Small-Scale Dairies In Utah, Steven Chans Lund
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
With an ever increasing concern for the environment, different methods of managing organic waste on dairy farms have been explored and analyzed. Anaerobic digestion has long been a popular method of managing organic waste. Its popularity stems from the potential to decrease greenhouse gases, improve air quality and provide a source of additional revenue for the farm. Problems with implementing anaerobic digestion arise from high failure rates, high start-up costs and continuous maintenance and equipment replacement.
Subsidies for the initial investment and improved technology have increased the possibility of large-scale dairy farms to adopt anaerobic digestion. Due to economies of …

Greater Sage-Grouse Vital Rate And Habitat Use Response To Landscape Scale Habitat Manipulations And Vegetation Micro-Sites In Northwestern Utah, Charles P. Sandford
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; sage-grouse) has been a species of conservation concern since the early 20th century. The decline of populations has largely been attributed to loss and degradation of sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) habitats. To contribute to the knowledge of sage-grouse ecology and quantify the effectiveness of landscape scale habitat manipulations intended to benefit sage-grouse, I monitored habitat use and vital-rates (i.e., nest and brood success) of 45 sage-grouse females in the Box Ender Sage-Grouse Management Area (SGMA) in northwestern Utah. Using telemetry locations of sage-grouse females with known nest and brood fates, I generated …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The strand-Cartesian grid approach is a unique method of generating and computing fluid dynamic simulations. The strand-Cartesian approach provides highly desirable qualities of fully-automatic grid generation and high accuracy. This work focuses on development of a high-accuracy methodology (high-order scheme) on strand grids for two and three dimensions.
In this work, the high-order scheme is extended to high-Reynolds number computations in both two and three dimensions with the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model and the Menter SST turbulence model. In addition, a simple limiter is explored to allow the high-order scheme to accurately predict discontinuous flows.
Extensive verification and validation is conducted …
How Good Intentions Backfire: Failures And Negative Consequences Of Federal Environmental Policies, Jordan K. Lofthouse
How Good Intentions Backfire: Failures And Negative Consequences Of Federal Environmental Policies, Jordan K. Lofthouse
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis is meant to dispel the myths that surround federal environmental policies. The research object of this project is to show that the formation of environmental policies is not altruistic, and the outcomes of these policies often have negative side effects that policymakers and the general public should recognize.
During my time as an undergraduate, I studied environmental geography, which also included environmental policies. We would research environmental problems, but the solution to these problems always seemed to be another government policy. I began to wonder why environmental problems never seemed to actually get better. Once I began my …

Developing A Method For Quantifying Nitrogen Transformation Rates Using In Situ Benthic Chambers Dosed With Isotopically Labeled Nitrate, Chelsea A. Stewardson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Nitrogen, a nutrient required for biological growth, is a common water quality parameter of concern as too much nitrogen can cause a strain on aquatic environments and even death of plants and animals. One way high levels of nitrogen are introduced into aquatic systems is by anthropogenic sources such as effluent from water reclamation facilities. A method was designed to observe the fate of nitrogen and measure the rates of its transformation into different nitrogen species within a stream receiving the effluent from the Silver Creek Water Reclamation Facility in Park City, Utah.
Sealed chambers were designed and installed along …
Developing More Efficient Mechanically Stabilized Earth (Mse) Wall Reinforcements, Matthew J. Rahmeyer
Developing More Efficient Mechanically Stabilized Earth (Mse) Wall Reinforcements, Matthew J. Rahmeyer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The most common shape for metallic reinforcement in Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls is a rectangular strip. The amount of force required to pull the reinforcement out of the wall versus how much steel is required is well balanced.
This study shows that a metal round bar can be altered, either by bending into various geometries or welding into crossbars, and provide similar and sometimes higher resistance to pullout than the rectangular strip. This was achieved while reducing the weight per foot of reinforcement of steel required and providing cost saving benefits.

“Touched By Time”: Geopolitical Themes Of Estonian National Identity Through Folklore And Song Festivals, Mandy L. Hoggard
“Touched By Time”: Geopolitical Themes Of Estonian National Identity Through Folklore And Song Festivals, Mandy L. Hoggard
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Estonian national identity—how Estonians imagine their values, history, and place in the world—is defined by their centuries-long struggle for independence and autonomy. This thesis examines the struggle and resulting identity through the lens of the laulupidu, or song festival, and its employment as a vehicle of political mobilization and re-constructor of Estonian history. Regarding folklore, in this case festivals and folk songs, as containers of the soul of the nation, I show how Estonians have produced and reproduced their national identity through the practice which they hold sacred: choral singing. I implemented a critical geopolitical approach, which emphasizes the …

Toward A General Parametric Model For Assessing The Impact Of Video Transcoding On Objective Video Quality, Nawaf Omar N. Alsrehin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The ultimate goal of any video delivery system is to allow any user to watch any video of any kind on any display device over any type of network with a desired output, i.e., viewing codec with preferred quality of service. This could theoretically require 1032 video transcoding functions that convert any original video to any desired output. Guaranteeing a required format and preferred quality of service of the perceived video requires selecting or composing a set of transcoding functions that satisfy the requested format and preferred quality of service. An effective way to accomplish this is by allowing the …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Largely produced in the Kashmir Valley during the mid-nineteenth century, gutkas are pocket-sized anthologies of texts, hymns, and prayers that a Hindu would recite in a sacred place in the home, usually near an altar. In the past, these objects have been relegated to the periphery of art historical discourse due to scholarly discriminations against their unrefined, "folk" characteristics. However, despite the lack of academic interest, a critical study of gutka culture provides the ideal viewpoint from which to explore South Asian art history, cultural history, and historical Hindu practices. Although these objects were often left unsigned by their illiterate …

Atp Usage In The Dark-Operative Protochlorophyllide Oxidoreductase, Mark S. Soffe
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Chlorophylls are essential pigment molecules that function in photosynthesis, and serve to aid in utilizing energy from sunlight to power cellular processes in plants, and other organisms. To make chlorophyll, photosynthetic organisms devote an abundance of resources and energy to ensure their appropriate construction. This process of making chlorophylls is highlighted by the penultimate step in the pathway—the conversion of protochlorophyllide (Pchlide) to chlorophyllide a (Chlide).
This conversion can be mediated in two different ways, depending on the type of organism. The first method incorporates the use of a light-activated system called the light-dependent protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase (LPOR). This system, as …
Heterogeneous And Homogeneous Nickel-Based Electrocatalysts For Oxygen Evolution And Carbon Dioxide Reduction, Meili Sheng
Heterogeneous And Homogeneous Nickel-Based Electrocatalysts For Oxygen Evolution And Carbon Dioxide Reduction, Meili Sheng
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The growing global energy demand and the increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere have encouraged the development of renewable energy to replace carbon-based fossil fuels. Electrocatalytic water splitting to form H2 and O2 and reduction of CO2 to CO are appealing processes and we can be directly utilize H2 and CO as fuels or commodity chemicals in mature industrial processes, which will not alter the current carbon cycle. However, the O2 evolution reaction of water splitting is a reaction of four-proton and four-electron transfer process, whose kinetics is very sluggish under normal conditions. …
