Establishing A Kinetic Assessment Of Reactive Strength, Talin Louder May 2017

Establishing A Kinetic Assessment Of Reactive Strength, Talin Louder

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Three neuromuscular characteristics are identified in Sheppard and Young’s model of agility: concentric strength and power, bilateral symmetry, and reactive strength. Measures of reactive strength attempt to model the neuromuscular regulation of tissue stress and strain. The Coefficient of Reactivity (CoR) is the first known assessment of neuromuscular reactivity. The CoR was developed as an assessment of neuromuscular performance in drop jumping. The construct validity of the CoR was placed in question when Warren Young proposed the Reactive Strength Index (RSI). The RSI improved the theoretical validity of reactive strength assessment since it included a component measure (ground contact time) …

Do Data Structures Matter? A Simulation Study For Testing The Validity Of Age-Period-Cohort Models, Sun Young Jeon May 2017

Do Data Structures Matter? A Simulation Study For Testing The Validity Of Age-Period-Cohort Models, Sun Young Jeon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Age, period, and cohort are three temporal dimensions that can make unique contributions to social and epidemiological changes that occur in populations over time. However, while the theoretical underpinnings for each temporal dimension are well established, the statistical techniques to assess the distinctive contributions of age, period and cohort are controversial. Unless questionable assumptions are imposed on the data, traditional linear regression models are incapable of estimating the independent contribution of each temporal dimension due to the linear dependence between age, period and cohort (A=P-C). Two recently developed methods, Hierarchical Age-Period-Cohort (HAPC) and Intrinsic Estimator (IE) models, enable researchers to …

Evaluation Of Multiple Exemplar Training Plus Discrimination Training On Promoting Generalization Of Response Variability, Bethany P. Contreras May 2017

Evaluation Of Multiple Exemplar Training Plus Discrimination Training On Promoting Generalization Of Response Variability, Bethany P. Contreras

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Typically developing children learn from play. For example, play serves as a foundation for children to acquire early language and social skills. Children with autism tend to have deficits in play, and often engage in rigid or repetitive behaviors during play. Such rigid play behavior can limit opportunities for these children to learn from play. Researchers have shown that it is possible to increase the variety of play behaviors that children with autism engage in. But, research has not yet shown whether these gains in play behavior will transfer to other play environments and situations. Therefore, the purpose of this …

Beam Steerable Reconfigurable Antenna With Smart Rf Switching On 3d Parasitic Level, Mohammad Ababil Hossain May 2017

Beam Steerable Reconfigurable Antenna With Smart Rf Switching On 3d Parasitic Level, Mohammad Ababil Hossain

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Traditional antennas have a lot of limitations as their performance is usually fixed by their initial geometry. On the other hand, modern communication systems are getting way to complicated compared to their earlier counterparts. This necessitates some special types of smart or reconfigurable antennas, which can dynamically adapt to the requirements of the communication systems more effectively. Using conventional single functional antennas is therefore not an efficient approach in these sort of communication systems. Considering all these factors, in this thesis, a beam steerable reconfigurable antenna system is presented that can yield the radiation patterns of multiple antennas with a …

Applications Of Relative Motion Models Using Curvilinear Coordinate Frames, Alex C. Perez

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A new angles-only initial relative orbit determination (IROD) algorithm is derived using three line-of-sight observations. This algorithm accomplishes this by taking a Singular Value Decomposition of a 6x6 matrix to arrive at an approximate initial relative orbit determination solution. This involves the approximate solution of 6 polynomial equations in 6 unknowns. An iterative improvement algorithm is also derived that provides the exact solution, to numerical precision, of the 6 polynomial equations in 6 unknowns. The initial relative orbit algorithm is also expanded for more than three line-of-sight observations with an iterative improvement algorithm for more than three line-of-sight observations. The …

The study focused on MPCs along the Wasatch Front in Utah, since Utah’s population, along the Wasatch Front, is expected to double by 2050 (Envision Utah, n.d.). Many of the developments being built …

Conservative Tryptophan Mutations In Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Ptp1b And Its Effect On Catalytic Rate And Chemical Reaction, Teisha Richan May 2017

Conservative Tryptophan Mutations In Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Ptp1b And Its Effect On Catalytic Rate And Chemical Reaction, Teisha Richan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Protein-tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) catalyze the hydrolysis of phosphorylated tyrosines by a 2-step mechanism involving nucleophilic attack by cysteine and general acid catalysis by aspartic acid. In most PTPs the aspartic acid resides on a flexible protein loop, consisting of about a dozen residues, called the WPD loop. PTP catalysis rates span several orders of magnitude, and differences in WPD loop dynamics have recently been show to correlate with the rate of enzymatic catalysis. The rate of WPD loop motion could possibly be related to a widely conserved tryptophan residue on the WPD loop. Therefore, point mutants were made in PTP1B …

Mechanism Of Substrate Reduction By Nitrogenase, Nimesh Khadka May 2017

Mechanism Of Substrate Reduction By Nitrogenase, Nimesh Khadka

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nitrogen (N) is a vital element of life and the main component of chemical fertilizer. The industrial Haber-Bosch process fulfills the demands of today’s nitrogen need and is therefore considered as one of the major scientific breakthroughs of the last century. However, the Haber-Bosch process operates at very high temperature and pressure, and requires fossils fuels to drive the reaction, making it an energy expensive process. The energy demand for this process accounts for almost 3% of the total global energy consumption. In addition, the rapid population growth, economic development and depletion of limited non-renewable fossil fuels have already created …

Anaerobic Digestion Of Wastewater: Effects Of Inoculants And Nutrient Management On Biomethane Production And Treatment, Jason Peterson May 2017

Anaerobic Digestion Of Wastewater: Effects Of Inoculants And Nutrient Management On Biomethane Production And Treatment, Jason Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Due to population expiation and the increased awareness of the impact on the environment by wastewater treatment, improved wastewater treatment systems are needed to treat municipal and agricultural wastewater. Treating wastewater with oxygen decreases carbon compounds at the expense of energy to move carbon and oxygen to be in contact with each other. Anaerobic digestion of wastewater can reduce the cost by utilizing microbes to treat high amounts of carbon in wastewater without the need for extensive oxygen requirement. With a proper balance of nutrients, microbes also produce methane, a renewable energy source.

It has been suggested that microalgae be …

Design And Characterization Of A Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometer For Composition Measurements In The Upper Atmosphere, E. Addison Everett May 2017

Design And Characterization Of A Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometer For Composition Measurements In The Upper Atmosphere, E. Addison Everett

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) is perhaps the least understood region of Earth's atmosphere. Too high for balloons and winged aircraft, yet too low for satellites, direct access to the MLT to make in-situ measurements is via high-speed sounding rockets for brief periods of at most a few minutes. Mass spectrometers have previously been used to make composition measurements in this region. But, mass spectrometry in the MLT is difficult, mainly due to the ambient pressures here and also the high speeds and short flight durations of sounding rocket missions. Time-of-flight mass spectrometers (TOF-MS) are capable of making fast, accurate measurements …

The Magic Of The Magic Kingdom: Folklore And Fan Culture In Disneyland, David Giles May 2017

The Magic Of The Magic Kingdom: Folklore And Fan Culture In Disneyland, David Giles

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A strong and vibrant fan culture surrounds Disneyland, despite the fact that Disney itself, in many cases, works hard to quash it. This surprising relationship dynamic is likely a result of the so-called “Disney Magic”—a term appropriated from Disney marketing material and applied to the unique emotional experience found in the park, often described with quasi-spiritual language.

This thesis examines three aspects of Disneyland’s fan culture in an attempt to understand the Magic and how it manifests in and sustains its fan culture. First is urban legends surrounding ash scatterings at the Haunted Mansion ride, which speak to dedicated fans’ …

Role Of Atp Hydrolysis And Mechanism Of Substrate Reduction In Nitrogenase, Sudipta Shaw May 2017

Role Of Atp Hydrolysis And Mechanism Of Substrate Reduction In Nitrogenase, Sudipta Shaw

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nitrogen is essential for life on earth as it is a major constituent of amino acids and nucleic acids. Nitrogen gas (N2) is the most abundant form of nitrogen in the atmosphere but the strong N≡N bond makes it unavailable for most organisms. Certain prokaryotes known as diazotrophs possess the unique ability to convert N2 to ammonia (NH3) which can be utilized by other organisms as a source of nitrogen. The diazotrophs perform this difficult reaction with the help of a complex metalloenzyme, nitrogenase. This enzyme is a major contributor of the fixed source of …

Environmental Values And Landscape Architecture: A New Ecological Paradigm Study, Emmet J. Pruss May 2017

Environmental Values And Landscape Architecture: A New Ecological Paradigm Study, Emmet J. Pruss

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In recent decades, landscape design theory has been affected by an increase in pro-environmental values. Largely, this trend has been associated with notions of ‘sustainability’ and ‘ecosystem services.’ These notions involve sustaining current human behaviors within the constraints of ecological limits and maximizing the benefits that humans receive from ecosystems, respectively. In this way, they involve high evaluations of the instrumental values of ecosystems, yet remain predominantly anthropocentric. As such, they are characteristic of shallow ecology worldview.

In order to assess whether the pro-environmental, yet essentially anthropocentric values involved with modern landscape architecture theory are reflected in the environmental worldviews …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Invasive species introductions are associated with negative economic and environmental impacts, including reductions in native species populations. Successful invasive species populations often grow rapidly and a new food web structure is established. The ability of invasive species to outcompete and prey upon native species are two characteristics that make them a leading cause of fish extinctions in North America.

Northern pike (Esox lucius; hereafter pike) are voracious ambush top predators \native to the upper Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions of the lower 48 United States, Alaska, and southern Canada. Pike have been spreading across the Intermountain West and Pacific …

Identifying The Underlying Components Of Delay Discounting Using Latent Factor Modeling, W. Brady Dehart May 2017

Identifying The Underlying Components Of Delay Discounting Using Latent Factor Modeling, W. Brady Dehart

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many problematic behaviors can be conceptualized as choosing a smaller, immediate outcome over a larger, delayed outcome. For example, drug abuse involves choosing between the immediate euphoric effects of the drug and the delayed health and legal consequences of drug abuse. Individuals that consistently choose the smaller outcome are said to behavior “impulsively.” The goal of this dissertation was to understand how to change impulsive choice. Chapters 2 and 3 successfully demonstrate that impulsive choice can be altered by reframing how the choice is presented. For example, framing a delayed outcome using a specific date instead of a duration of …
