Facial Expression Recognition In The Wild Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Amir Hossein Farzaneh
Facial Expression Recognition In The Wild Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Amir Hossein Farzaneh
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Facial Expression Recognition (FER) is the task of predicting a specific facial expression given a facial image. FER has demonstrated remarkable progress due to the advancement of deep learning. Generally, a FER system as a prediction model is built using two sub-modules: 1. Facial image representation model that learns a mapping from the input 2D facial image to a compact feature representation in the embedding space, and 2. A classifier module that maps the learned features to the label space comprising seven labels of neutral, happy, sad, surprise, anger, fear, or disgust. Ultimately, …
An Analysis Of Syntax Exercises On The Performance Of Cs1 Students, Shelsey B. Sullivan
An Analysis Of Syntax Exercises On The Performance Of Cs1 Students, Shelsey B. Sullivan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Students in introductory programming classes (CS1) generally have a difficult time learning the rules of programming. Although the general concepts of programming are relatively easy to learn, it can be difficult to learn what exactly can be typed in what order, which is known as syntax. To attempt to help students overcome this barrier, a study was conducted that introduced exercises into a CS1 class which taught the programming syntax in simple steps. The results of this study were obtained by analyzing the keys the students pressed, the errors of their code, their midterm exam scores, and their responses to …

Methods In Modeling Wildlife Disease From Model Selection To Parameterization With Multi-Scale Data, Ian Mcgahan
Methods In Modeling Wildlife Disease From Model Selection To Parameterization With Multi-Scale Data, Ian Mcgahan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effects of emerging wildlife diseases are global and profound, resulting in loss of human life, economic and agricultural impacts, declines in wildlife populations, and ecological disturbance. The spread of wildlife diseases can be viewed as the result of two simultaneous processes: spatial spread of wildlife populations and disease spread through a population. For many diseases these processes happen at different timescales, which is reflected in available data. These data come in two flavors: high-frequency, high-resolution telemetry data (e.g. GPS collar) and low-frequency, low-resolution presence-absence disease data. The multi-scale nature of these data makes analysis of such systems challenging. Mathematical …
Automating And Analyzing Whole-Farm Carbon Models, Aditi Maheshwari
Automating And Analyzing Whole-Farm Carbon Models, Aditi Maheshwari
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The goal of this research is to learn about whole farm carbon models. A whole farm carbon model estimates the emissions of greenhouse gasses (GHGs) based on information for a farm. We analyzed two models, HOLOS whole-farm and COMET-Farm, by running the models on random inputs and building classifiers from the runs. HOLOS estimates GHG emissions for a particular year based on crop and animal agriculture input, while COMET-farm adds past and future farm management practices. Users of the models must manually enter farm data through a graphical user interface (GUI), which is a good method for a single farm, …
Rome, Robes, And Rivers: Land, Water, And Power In The Aniene Valley, Jonah R. Bibo
Rome, Robes, And Rivers: Land, Water, And Power In The Aniene Valley, Jonah R. Bibo
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Rome, Robes, and Rivers is a multi-century environmental history that shows how different occupants in the Italian Aniene river valley help power through the exploitation and control of its land and water resources. It ranges from the classical to late medieval eras, focusing on the Roman empire alongside later Benedictine monastic societies, who each used different tactics to maintain control over the land. Roman aqueducts brought water to the city, while Benedictine monks taxed peasant laborers to maintain control of the land. Each occupant shaped the land their own needs and left their mark on the landscape in ways that …
A Stratospheric Approach To Diagnose The North American Winter Dipole, Henrik Panosyan
A Stratospheric Approach To Diagnose The North American Winter Dipole, Henrik Panosyan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It has been well established in the literature that the stratosphere is dynamically coupled with the troposphere during boreal winter. The North American Winter Dipole is comprised of an upper-tropospheric contrast between a ridge over western North America, and a trough over eastern North America. The variance of this circulation regime has increased in recent years, with its amplified states being associated with extremes ranging from drought and floods, to extreme cold air outbreaks. This study explores the stratospheric link to this extreme weather regime, in the hopes of ultimately improving the predictability of this regime on intraseasonal-to-seasonal timescales. We …
Universal Localizations Of Certain Noncommutative Rings, Tyler B. Bowles
Universal Localizations Of Certain Noncommutative Rings, Tyler B. Bowles
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A common theme throughout algebra is the extension of arithmetic systems to ones over which new equations can be solved. For instance, someone who knows only positive numbers might think that there is no solution to x + 3 = 0, yet later learns x = -3 to be a feasible solution. Likewise, when faced with the equation 2x = 3, someone familiar only with integers may declare that there is no solution, but may later learn that x = 3/2 is a reasonable answer. Many eventually learn that the extension of real numbers to complex numbers unlocks solutions …
Development And Identification Of Metrics To Predict The Impact Of Dimension Reduction Techniques On Classical Machine Learning Algorithms For Still Highway Images, Wasim Akram Khan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
We are witnessing an influx of data - images, texts, video, etc. Their high dimensionality and large volume make it challenging to apply machine learning to obtain actionable insight. This thesis explores several aspects pertaining to dimensional reduction: dimension reduction methods, metrics to measure distortion, image preprocessing, etc. Faster training and inference time on reduced data and smaller models which can be deployed on commodity hardware are a critical advantage of dimension reduction. For this study, classical machine learning methods were explored owing to their solid mathematical foundation and interpretability.
The dataset used is a time series of images from …

Geomorphic History Of The Grand Staircase Region Of The Colorado Plateau: Understanding Arroyo Cut-Fill Dynamics, Erosion Rates, And Wildfire, Kerry E. Riley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Most streams in the southwestern United States do not flow all year, and given their delicate balance of sediment and water flow, they are sensitive to climate change. At the turn of the 20th century, many streams in the Southwest rapidly incised into their floodplains, forming arroyos with a channel entrenched into near-vertical channel banks mostly composed of sand and mud. This dissertation investigates past changes in watersheds draining the Grand Staircase region in southern Utah with the goal of understanding how changes in climate and sediment influence these types of streams. Results show sediment supply is highly variable across …
Connections Between Hydrothermal System Geochemistry And Microbiology: Traversing Tectonic Boundaries In The South-Central Peruvian Andes, Heather Upin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Geochemistry and microbiology are inherently tied in the natural world. The study of geomicrobiology has historically taken place in extreme systems, like hot springs of Yellowstone National Park and deep-sea hydrothermal vents, because the organisms that exist there have deep lineages on the tree of life and provide insight into early life on Earth. These microbes use chemical energy from nutrients available in their environment rather than relying on photosynthesis, energy obtained from the sun, to support their metabolism. The goal of this study is to improve our understanding of geological controls (for example the tectonic setting) on hot spring …

Solar Irradiance Prediction Using Xg-Boost With The Numerical Weather Forecast, Pratyusha Sai Kamarouthu
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
To defeat global warming, the world expects to look at renewable energy sources. Solar energy is one of the best renewable energy sources which causes no harm to the environment. As solar energy changes with atmospheric parameters like temperature, relative humidity, cloud coverage, dewpoint, sun position, day of the year, etc. It is difficult to understand its nature by science. Predicting solar irradiance which is directly proportional to solar energy using atmospheric parameters is the main goal of this work. Powerful artificial intelligence algorithms that won many coding competitions have been used to predict it. Using these methods and numerical …

The purpose of this multiple-paper dissertation is to design a digital game and stealth assessments within the game to assess young second language learners' Chinese reading proficiency. In Chapter 2 (Paper 1), I describe the game designed for this dissertation and how it was implemented in a dual language immersion classroom. This study found that the digital game and in-class implementation led to significant vocabulary and reading comprehension gains. Further, seven types of support that students needed while playing the game were identified. In Chapter 3 (Paper 2), I describe how educational data mining approaches, and more specifically, how data-driven …
Improving Aquatic Habitat Representation In Utah Using Large Spatial Scale Environmental Datasets, Gregory C. Goodrum
Improving Aquatic Habitat Representation In Utah Using Large Spatial Scale Environmental Datasets, Gregory C. Goodrum
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Rivers provide habitat for aquatic species, but widespread human water development degrades aquatic habitat, fragments stream networks, and threatens native fish populations. Habitat suitability models are commonly used to identify current instream habitat conditions, but are often species-specific, data-intensive, and rarely suitable to the large spatial scales required in conservation and water resources management. Thus, there is need to develop and validate habitat suitability models that provide ecologically-meaningful estimations of aquatic habitat, but are simple enough to apply at large geographic areas and flexible to incorporate different species. I tested the accuracy of 15 habitat suitability models estimating Bonneville Cutthroat …
Greening-Induced Runoff Loss In The Western United States, Xueyan Zhang
Greening-Induced Runoff Loss In The Western United States, Xueyan Zhang
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study assessed how vegetation will influence long-term runoff trends across the western United States (western US) in the future. I used a land surface model with improved dynamic vegetation root processes to better quantify regional runoff trends across five regions (Upper and Lower Colorado, Great Basin, Pacific Northwest, and California). The model was driven by statistically downscaled and bias-corrected outputs from three global climate models under the Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios. Vegetation greening dominated significant transpiration increases that contributed most to increasing evapotranspiration across the western US, especially during spring and summer. Consistent with these trends, …
Evaluation Of Best Practices For Urban Water Conservation And Water-Smart Growth Implementation In Utah, J. Ivy Harvey Thomson
Evaluation Of Best Practices For Urban Water Conservation And Water-Smart Growth Implementation In Utah, J. Ivy Harvey Thomson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Policies and programs have been utilized throughout the United States (U.S.) to reduce water use as a strategy to ensure sufficient water supplies for future demand. As governmental leaders and policy makers face increasing freshwater scarcity and supply unpredictability, along with rising costs and decreased federal funding, Best Practices (BPs) in water conservation are increasingly important to facilitate decision-making in choosing which strategies to employ. This project uses policy analysis to review and summarize various BPs, referencing both academic and professional literature. National fixture efficiency standards enacted in 1992 are credited as among the leading factors reducing indoor water use …
Load Forecasting Analysis Using Contextual Data And Integration With Microgrids Used For Off Grid Ev Charging Stations, Ashit Neema
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Electricity is an essential component of the smooth working of every sector. If a successful prediction of how much electricity will be required for say the next 24 hours or 48 hours can be made, it will not only help in efficiently planning the activities and operations but also help in minimizing the cost incurred. In this thesis the same is being attempted, first, a model is created that can predict the energy consumption of households using various tools available. To achieve this, historical data of the past 5 years that has been recorded in London has been used. Secondly, …
Massive Graviton Spectra In Supergravity, Kevin Dimmitt
Massive Graviton Spectra In Supergravity, Kevin Dimmitt
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Development of a unified theory of physics would pave the way for new research and technology development for many years to come. Unfortunately, the two best current theories explaining nature, the Standard Model of particle physics and general relativity, do not seem to be compatible, requiring the development of more complicated models which contains both of these at their respective limits. Supergravities are one set of theories which may, at least in part, provide hints as to how it may be possible to unify physics into a single model.
This research project follows from a line of investigation which the …

The purpose of this thesis is to provide a software toolkit within the Differential Geometry package of Maple for classifying subalgebras of In particular the thesis will focus on classifying those subalgebras which are isomorphic to the Lie algebra sl(2) and those subalgebras of which have a basis aligned with the root space decomposition (regular subalgebras).
Impact Of Parasitic Drag On A Family Of Optimal Lift Distributions, Austin J. Stewart
Impact Of Parasitic Drag On A Family Of Optimal Lift Distributions, Austin J. Stewart
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Minimizing drag is a variational problem, and several minimum induced drag solutions have been found using different design constraints. The elliptic lift distribution is commonly used to minimize induced drag, but is only the optimal solution under one set of design constraints. Non-elliptic lift distributions are able to reduce induced drag, when compared to the elliptic lift distribution, by increasing the wingspan while maintaining a consistent wing–structure weight. However, these non-elliptic lift distributions are only optimal if the effects of viscous drag are neglected. In this study, numerical tools are used to estimate the total drag on rectangular wings that …
Big Data Management For Secured Smart Healthcare System: A Machine Learning Framework, Abrar Zahin
Big Data Management For Secured Smart Healthcare System: A Machine Learning Framework, Abrar Zahin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Human action recognition and monitoring are a significant part of a smart healthcare system, which allows us to remotely monitor the behavior of patients or elderly persons to record their daily activities and to ensure safety. Ubiquitous smart wearable sensors are becoming convenient for generating and transmitting those healthcare data for further processing. Interpretation of such huge amount of data requires advanced learning systems where most important information can be extracted and analyzed. For example, current classification algorithms are not robust enough to differentiate among numerous variations of human actions due to the lack of sufficient processed samples. Thus, one …
Nanotextural And Nanochemical Constraints On The Role Of Heat In The Development Of Crystalline-Hosted, Silica-Rich Fault Mirrors In The Wasatch Fault Damage Zone, Utah, Usa, Leah M. Houser
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Earthquakes occur on faults, or rock that has experienced displacement at depth. Experimental work on a range of rock types reveals that >90% of earthquake energy on fault surfaces is given off as heat. Heat weakens rock and promotes earthquake rupture propagation. Thin (<0.5mm), high-gloss, "polished", light-reflective exposed fault surfaces are called fault mirrors (FMs). Fault mirrors may record rapid thermal, textural, and chemical changes that occur during an earthquake event.
The Wasatch Mountains are a N-S trending mountain range in Northern Utah that are the backdrop for Salt Lake City, Provo, Ogden, and Brigham City. This mountain range is currently built by the active Wasatch fault, and includes the exposed Wasatch fault damage zone. Many segments of the Wasatch fault are overdue for a potentially catastrophic …

Predicting The Impact Of Weather On Rural Travel Times Using Now-Cast Weather Forecast Data, Manish Meshram
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the states which record extreme weather conditions and high snow in winters, the travel time to drive between cities can get highly affected due to these bad weather conditions. The present solutions to tackle this problem are largely flow or time related and do not take weather conditions into account while making the predictions about travel time. Also these solutions can mostly be used for real time travel and not the future travel. In addition to that, the studies that have been done in this space are mostly for urban travel times but most parts of the interstate highways …

Applications Of Machine Learning In High-Frequency Trade Direction Classification, Jared E. Hansen
Applications Of Machine Learning In High-Frequency Trade Direction Classification, Jared E. Hansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The correct assignment of trades as buyer-initiated or seller-initiated is paramount in many quantitative finance studies. Simple decision rule methods have been used for signing trades since many data sets available to researchers do not include the sign of each trade executed. By utilizing these decision rule methods, as well as engineering new variables from available data, we have demonstrated that machine learning models outperform prior methods for accurately signing trades as buys and sells, achieving state-of-the-art results. The best model developed was 4.5 percentage points more accurate than older methods when predicting onto unseen data. Since finance and economics …

“What Makes ‘Em Tick?” The Impact Of Parenting Style And Parent-Initiated Motivational Climate On Student Athletes’ Motivation Orientation In The Context Of Intercollegiate Athletics, Logan Kateryna Lyons
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Motivation has become a widely studied construct in intercollegiate athletics, as coaches and administrators have sought to maximize the socioemotional and performance aspects of athletic competition. While researchers acknowledge parents as having an important role in the socialization of motivation, research in this area has largely focused on sport-specific parenting practices, failing to account for the broader components of global parenting style that may influence parent-initiated motivational climates, and subsequently the motivational profiles exhibited by developing student athletes. The present study was designed to investigate the relationship among global parenting style, parent-created motivational climate, and student-athlete motivation within the context …
