Effects Of Animal Science Agricultural Education Course Completion On Urban High School Students' Career Choice, Kristina Gowans
Effects Of Animal Science Agricultural Education Course Completion On Urban High School Students' Career Choice, Kristina Gowans
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study focused on testing the effects of agricultural education on urban high school students’ career choices. It looked into how students view agriculture, how they perceive their peers view agriculture, how their demographics are related to career choice, and if their career choice was changed to a different career upon completion of the study. The study showed a positive relationship between completing an agricultural education class in animal science and interest in going into an agricultural career. Further, females in the study were more likely to choose an agricultural career. After the completion of a school-based agricultural education program, …
The Benefits Of Animal Traceability Systems On A Foot-And-Mouth Disease Outbreak In Utah, Christian Michael Ukkestad
The Benefits Of Animal Traceability Systems On A Foot-And-Mouth Disease Outbreak In Utah, Christian Michael Ukkestad
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In recent decades, a number of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks have occurred in countries that had been FMD-free for many years. The last FMD outbreak in the United States occurred in 1929 and the country contains a naïve livestock population, meaning it is susceptible to an outbreak. In the event of an FMD outbreak in the United States, the speed at which the source and contacts between livestock can be identified impacts both the implementation and effectiveness of mitigation strategies. The purpose of this thesis was to analyze the impact of higher levels of animal traceability on the immediate welfare …
Ringtail Distribution, Dermatoglyphics, And Diet In Zion National Park, Utah, Adrian Argie Roadman
Ringtail Distribution, Dermatoglyphics, And Diet In Zion National Park, Utah, Adrian Argie Roadman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Current scientific knowledge of the ringtail (Bassariscus astutus) is limited, thus impeding appropriate management decisions. Ringtails in Zion National Park, Utah, are rarely seen, but are involved in increasing occurrences of negative interactions with park visitors and employees such as food theft and denning in buildings, interactions which are harmful to both parties. To manage this conflict, an update to the general knowledge about the status of the population is required as the only previous study on ringtails in this area was conducted in the 1960s. Using noninvasive techniques provides dependable large-scale population information. I used two noninvasive detection methods …
Engaging Alternative High School Students Through The Design, Development, And Crafting Of Computationally Enhanced Pets, Maneksha Katrine Dumont

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A new kind of technology combines making in the physical world with computing in the virtual world. These technologies are simultaneously physical and virtual, require the design of artifacts like computer programs and the crafting of physical components. Combining approaches encourage youth to participate in computing who might not otherwise be interested by harnessing existing hobbies and interests. Because fluency with computing is important to success in a 21st century society, increasing the ways in which young people can experience and connect to computing is important. Computational thinking, and with it the process of debugging computer code, is an example …

There has been little research conducted on the physiological response of calves to temperatures outside thermal neutrality and its effects on intake and weight gain. The effects of ambient temperature on Holstein dairy calves intakes and weight gain were evaluated over a 12-month period at the Utah State University Caine Dairy.
Ambient temperature was monitored using a weather station located 1.3 kilometers from the dairy. Calf health was monitored daily using the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine scoring criteria. Calves were fed whole milk and free choice calf starter. Weight gain, wither and hip height, starter intake, and …
Systematics And Behavioral Evolution Of Spider Wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae), Cecilia Waichert Monteiro
Systematics And Behavioral Evolution Of Spider Wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae), Cecilia Waichert Monteiro
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Spider wasps form a diverse and widespread group of stinging wasps. Although all Pompilidae have similar life history characteristics, there is considerable variation in nesting behavior modes and, thus, this family could be useful for learning about the evolution of nesting behavior in insects. The nesting behavior of many species is well known, the family is monophyletic and easily recognized, and certain species have some degree of pre-sociality, i.e., communal nesting. All these factors suggest that the Pompilidae are an important model group for understanding mechanisms and patterns of behavioral evolution.
Pompilidae, however, are rarely studied and their research potential …

Ghrelin Concentrations In Milk And Plasma Of Dairy Cows During Early Lactation, Sameer M. Alhojaily
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Ghrelin is a hormone produced mainly by the cells lining the gastric mucosa. Ghrelin was first extracted from human and rat stomachs, and identified as an endogenous stimulator of growth hormone release. Ghrelin is synthesized and produced in several tissues, but the gastric mucosa remains the major source of circulating ghrelin. Besides growth hormone release, ghrelin stimulates appetite and plays some major roles in different organs. In several studies, ghrelin was described as a hormone with multiple functions and diverse biological actions. Ghrelin exists in two major forms, active ghrelin and inactive ghrelin, and only the active from binds to …
Influence Of Stand Composition On Soil Organic Carbon Stabilization And Biochemistry In Aspen And Conifer Forests Of Utah, Mercedes Román Dobarco
Influence Of Stand Composition On Soil Organic Carbon Stabilization And Biochemistry In Aspen And Conifer Forests Of Utah, Mercedes Román Dobarco
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Social concern about climate change and the elevated level of atmospheric CO2 demands understanding carbon (C) storage and dynamics in forest soils, especially since soils are the largest C reservoir in terrestrial ecosystems, storing two thirds of total C. Quacking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) is an iconic species in western United States that offers multiple ecosystem services, such as habitat and forage for wildlife and cattle, biodiversity, water yield, and C storage. A decline in quaking aspen cover has been documented during the last decades, possibly due to fire suppression and ungulate browsing. A shift from aspen- to conifer-dominated …
Stem Development, Seeding Rate, And Establishment Of Birdsfoot Trefoil (Lotus Corniculatus) For Organic, Grazing-Based Dairies, Sara Hunt
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Birdsfoot trefoil (BFT, Lotus corniculatus L.) is a non-bloating, productive forage legume well suited to grazing-based ruminant production. This thesis presents three studies conducted in the Mountain West applicable to organic management and cultivation of BFT. The first is an analysis of lignification in BFT stems that supports recommendations to harvest BFT at approximately 6 weeks of regrowth, or early bloom. Lignification decreases digestibility and is correlated with high shear force required for grazing animals to break BFT stems. The process of stem lignification was observed by harvesting increasingly mature stems; cutting thin sections of the sixth stem internode, which …
The Baker Cave Bison Remains: Bison Diminution And Late Holocene Subsistence On The Snake River Plain, Southern Idaho, Ryan P. Breslawski
The Baker Cave Bison Remains: Bison Diminution And Late Holocene Subsistence On The Snake River Plain, Southern Idaho, Ryan P. Breslawski
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis investigates that paleoecology of southern Idaho bison and their role in prehistoric subsistence with two articles. The first article investigates the trajectory of bison diminution in southern Idaho with bison morphometrics from Baker Cave, a late Holocene archaeological site. Results indicate that local bison followed a diminution trend mirroring the diminution trend documented on the Great Plains. This suggests that similar bottom up ecosystem controls acted on bison in both the Great Plains and in southern Idaho through the Holocene.
The second article examines the role of bison in seasonal subsistence strategies. I hypothesize that winter fat scarcity …
Beetles, Fungi And Trees: A Story For The Ages? Modeling And Projecting The Multipartite Symbiosis Between The Mountain Pine Beetle, Dendroctonus Ponderosae, And Its Fungal Symbionts, Grosmannia Clavigera And Ophiostoma Montium, Audrey L. Addison
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
As data collection and modeling improve, ecologists increasingly discover that interspecies dynamics greatly affect the success of individual species. Models accounting for the dynamics of multiple species are becoming more important. In this work, we explore the relationship between mountain pine beetle (MPB, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) and two mutualistic fungi, Grosmannia clavigera and Ophiostoma montium. These species are involved in a multipartite symbiosis, critical to the survival of MPB, in which each species benefits.
Extensive phenological modeling has been done to determine how temperature affects the timing of life events and cold-weather mortality of MPB. The fungi have also …

Yield And Quality Of First-Year Corn Silage Following Alfalfa Stand Termination As Affected By Tillage, Herbicide, And Nitrogen Fertilizer, Jason Daniel Clark
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Glyphosate-containing herbicides such as Roundup® are a common and highly effective method to terminate alfalfa stands. With the development of glyphosate-resistant (Roundup Ready®) alfalfa, this tool is no longer an option. The purpose of this research was to determine the optimal termination methods to use when rotating from glyphosate-resistant alfalfa into silage corn. Studies were conducted in 2012 and 2013 in Cache Junction and Cornish, Utah using five different combinations of tillage type and timing (fall conventional till, spring conventional till, fall strip-till, spring strip-till, and no-till), four 2,4-D plus dicamba herbicide timings (fall, spring, in-crop, and a control), and …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge (AMNWR) supports nearly 30 organisms found nowhere else in the world. Most of these species are aquatic, dwelling in more than 50 seeps and springs within the over 24,000 acres of the refuge. Much of the research at AMNWR has centered on these unique and abundant springfed pools across the desert landscape. Many of the terrestrial habitats and species at the refuge have not been as well studied. In 2008, Bio-West, Inc. in Logan, Utah was contracted to inventory the terrestrial organisms present on the refuge. To investigate the terrestrial invertebrate fauna, with special interest …
Structural Change Of The Western United States Alfalfa Hay Market And Its Effect On The Western United States Dairy Industry, Joseph Patrick Cann
Structural Change Of The Western United States Alfalfa Hay Market And Its Effect On The Western United States Dairy Industry, Joseph Patrick Cann
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Alfalfa is the fourth largest commodity grown in the Western U.S., representing 20% of the crop acreage over the past twenty years. In the last five years alfalfa hay price has doubled from what it was previously, indicating a possible structural change in the market. This research project was completed to test for this structural change using econometric analysis of the important demand components of alfalfa price. In addition to this, simulations of an average Utah dairy were completed to examine which ratio of forage crops provided the highest economic return to the operation.
To analyze the structural change of …
Nutrient Utilization, Lactational Performance, And Profitability Of Dairy Cows By Feeding Protein Supplements In High-Forage Lactation Diets, Kathryn Neal
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Due to the increasing cost of soybean meal and concerns of excess N being excreted into the environment, new protein supplements have been developed. Two products that have shown potential in increasing N utilization efficiency are slow release urea (SRU; Optigen) and ruminal escape protein derived from yeast (YMP; DEMP). The objective of this study was to assess the effects of feeding these 2 supplements in high-forage [(54% of total dietary dry matter (DM)] dairy diets on nutrient utilization, feed efficiency, lactational performance of dairy cows, and their impacts on income-over feed costs. Twelve …
Evaluation Of Composting Of Municipal Solid Waste, J. Ryan Stebbins
Evaluation Of Composting Of Municipal Solid Waste, J. Ryan Stebbins
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Millions of tons of organic waste are lost each year by being deposited in landfills instead of being composted. Composting would increase the life of landfills and reduce the loss of renewable resources. Current composting techniques take approximately 6 months to break down the organic components, such as yard trimmings and food waste. In addition, a large amount of area is required for the windrows piles. Recycling techniques help to separate organics, such as yard trimmings and food waste, from the municipal solid waste (MSW) stream for composting. However, these techniques are time consuming, costly, and not extensively practiced. Since …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Worldwide expenditures on international development in the form of assistance or “aid” have continued to increase as developed countries look to both help and influence developing countries. In 2011, more than $140 billion in development aid was distributed globally, more than double the amount expended for international development aid in 2003. Many of the countries that are in need of aid have governments that do not have the resources, the experience, political stability, or well-functioning institutions to effect long-term structural change to bring their people out of poverty.
Ethiopia is a country receiving large amounts of development aid, and one …

Solving linear systems is at the heart of many scientific applications from the PreAlgebra's student solving for x and y for basic geometry problems to the computational scientist solving billions of equations with billions of variables for weather forecasting, modeling fusion reactions, or web search algorithms. In this study we look at improving the efficiency of solving large linear systems that result from two applications. The first includes linear systems that result from solving differential equations for the movement of atomic particles in particle emitting, void, and absorbing regions. The second includes solving linear systems that result from solving differential …
The Effects Of High-Tech Stimuli And Duration Of Access On Reinforcer Preference And Efficacy, Audrey N. Hoffmann
The Effects Of High-Tech Stimuli And Duration Of Access On Reinforcer Preference And Efficacy, Audrey N. Hoffmann
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Reinforcement is commonly used to increase individuals engaging in certain behaviors. We can alter the value of the reinforcers by manipulating how long they get access to the reinforcer (i.e., magnitude) or by varying the type of reinforcer we use. The use of high technology items (i.e., high-tech) as a reinforcer has not been examined. We examined the interaction between high- and no-tech items and duration of access and the effects of that interaction on reinforcer preference and efficacy (i.e., how effective the reinforcer is in increasing behavior) in three individuals with disabilities. We conducted two preference assessments to identify …

As one of the most epidemic health concerns in the world, obesity has become a widespread health issue especially for the developed world. It is related to various health conditions including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. It is also quite costly. In United States alone, the medical cost of obesity in 2008 was estimated to be $147 billion. Many underlying mechanisms of obesity have been studied in the past few decades. However, the most prevalent cause appears to be simply an imbalance of energy intake and expenditure, resulting in the accumulation of body fat. On …
The Role Of Trpm5 In Dietary Fat Preference, Intake, And Body Composition, Dulce M. Minaya
The Role Of Trpm5 In Dietary Fat Preference, Intake, And Body Composition, Dulce M. Minaya
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
We recently showed a critical role of Trpm5 in the transduction pathway for long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. In the present study, I have begun to investigate dietary fat preference and the propensity to develop dietary-induced obesity in Trpm5-/- mice. My preliminary data shows that in male mice placed on a high fat diet, Trpm5-/- mice did not enhance their caloric intake as observed in wild type mice. Most surprisingly, however, was that I did not observe the same differences in between female mice, which posits a potential gender effect of this pathway on dietary fat intake. Also, …
An Evaluation Of The Food Web Dynamics And Predator Prey Interactions In Scofield Reservoir, Lisa K. Winters
An Evaluation Of The Food Web Dynamics And Predator Prey Interactions In Scofield Reservoir, Lisa K. Winters
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Reservoirs are artificial, dynamic, and highly manipulated systems, where the appearance of either intentionally or unintentionally introduced species may disrupt interactions within an already complex food web. In some situations, a top predator fish may be stocked as a biological control agent, if these fish-eating predators monopolize on the nuisance and unwelcome prey. Scofield Reservoir, Utah has historically been an extremely popular blue-ribbon fishery. However, a recent decrease in rainbow trout catch and increase in the minnow, Utah chub, have made it difficult to find a balance between providing the public with a trophy sport fishery and maintaining an ecologically …
Dramatic Play Affordances Of Natural And Manufactured Outdoor Settings For Preschool-Aged Children, Kimberly K. Cloward Drown
Dramatic Play Affordances Of Natural And Manufactured Outdoor Settings For Preschool-Aged Children, Kimberly K. Cloward Drown
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Concern for child wellness has led play professionals to explore natural playscapes as a means to enhance free play and consequently child development. For preschool children, dramatic or make-believe play is particularly beneficial for enhancing cognitive, social, and emotional skill. Dramatic play in collaboration with other children (sociodramatic play) and, surpassing that, complex socio-dramatic play (group make-believe with a sustained theme that uses sophisticated symbolism) are most valuable for development.
This study compared natural and manufactured outdoor play settings to determine which provided the most opportunity for quality dramatic play. Twenty-four 3- to 5- year olds were observed during daily …
Three Essays On The Economics Of Controlling Invasive Species, Yanxu Liu
Three Essays On The Economics Of Controlling Invasive Species, Yanxu Liu
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Invasive species have caused notable economic damages in agriculture, fisheries, forestry, and other industries over the past several decades. Invasive species control must therefore be designed to prevent the both the introduction and spread of invasive species. This dissertation examines the efficiency and efficacy of tariffs and inspections as a joint control mechanism at a home (i.e., importing) country's border. I find that a traditional tariff can be optimal in the short run when the invasive species level is directly related to a foreign (i.e., exporting) country's shipment size. However, in the long run a traditional tariff results in a …
Macroinvertebrate-Driven Nutrient Recycling In Four Large Rivers, Matt A. Schroer
Macroinvertebrate-Driven Nutrient Recycling In Four Large Rivers, Matt A. Schroer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The cycling of nutrients is a fundamental process in streams and rivers, and scientists are increasingly recognizing the importance of animal communities to nutrient dynamics in these ecosystems. Despite growing evidence that animal excretion (i.e. urine) can supply limiting nutrients to primary producers in small streams, the importance of excretion is uncertain in large rivers. Accordingly, I used three estimation approaches based on past and new excretion rate data to determine nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) excretion inputs from insect communities in four large rivers (discharge > 10 cubic meters per second) in North America, and I compared these rates to …
The Ecosystem Role Of Fishes In Lotic Environments, Christopher C. Wheeler
The Ecosystem Role Of Fishes In Lotic Environments, Christopher C. Wheeler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is important for humans to understand how ecosystems work because we depend on them for a variety of products and services. For example, rivers and streams provide fisheries, improved water quality, and recreational opportunities to many individuals. In rivers, interactions among fishes, other stream plants and animals, and the physical river environment can influence continued provision of these valuable services. However, the role played by many freshwater fishes in the provision of these services remains unknown. Additionally, it is important to identify different factors that affect the outcome of interactions involving riverine fishes. To address these issues, I evaluated …
Assessing The Impact Of Supplements, Food Aversions, And Silica On Medusahead Use By Sheep, Tyler Hamilton
Assessing The Impact Of Supplements, Food Aversions, And Silica On Medusahead Use By Sheep, Tyler Hamilton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Ranchers, farmers, land managers, and resource management agencies have been plagued with various types of invasive weeds for decades, ultimately affecting millions of acres of viable wildlife habitat, grazing, and recreational opportunities. Invasive weeds often have nutritional contexts that negatively affect animals in some way, increasing the incentive to avoid consuming it by various animal species and domestic livestock. With the current amount of land infested with this weed, and the limited knowledge of the reason for avoidance, the underlying causes of livestock avoidance require in-depth and fundamental understanding.
In my MS program, I sought to explore the relationship of …
The Role Of Obesity, Diabetes, And Hypertension In Cleft Lip And Cleft Palate Birth Defects, Hebah Alawi Kutbi
The Role Of Obesity, Diabetes, And Hypertension In Cleft Lip And Cleft Palate Birth Defects, Hebah Alawi Kutbi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Orofacial clefts (OFCs) are birth defects characterized by immediately recognizable disruption of normal facial structure caused by abnormal facial development during the first six to eight weeks of gestation, causing a cleft in the lip or the palate. OFCs are among the most common structural birth defects and a public health problem. Some studies have found that maternal obesity, diabetes, hypertension, or the underlying metabolic abnormalities known as the metabolic syndrome, might be associated with the risk of OFCs, though other studies have been inconsistent. Data of mothers who have had children with OFCs were compared to those of children …
