Despite efforts to reduce the incidence of adolescent pregnancy and childbearing in the U.S., it remains a pressing social concern and public health problem. Indeed, births to women under 20 continue to constitute one of every seven births in this country and remain higher than teen birth rates in comparable industrialized nations. The literature clearly indicates that factors such as (a) early initiation of sexual activity, (b) lack of appropriate reproductive knowledge, (c) limited educational aspirations, (d) low self-esteem, and (e) family poverty increase the likelihood that an adolescent will begin early childbearing and that she will subsequently have at …

Objectives . (1) To identify and describe four groups of children with special health care needs (CSHCN) using definitions that represent various groups of special needs children who are, or who have been recommended to be, carved-out of participation in managed care plans. (2) To examine how total, mean, and median annual health care expenditures differ based on the definition for CSHCN used. (3) To assess the capacity of several risk adjusters, including age, gender, CSHCN group to which children belong, and the Ambulatory Diagnostic Groups (ADGs) to predict annual expenditures for healthy children and for the groups of CSHCN. …

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is produced by many sources, and for most people the sun is their main source of exposure. In the occupational environment there are also many artificial sources, of which welding arcs are the predominant and most intense. This dissertation represents a synthesis and interpretation of information (both empirical and review) that is contained in five journal articles. These articles address personal exposure, evaluation and control of UVR from both natural and artificial sources, and in particular exposure to UVR from welding arcs.
