The present extent of our knowledge of genetic and bio-chemical mechanisms has been derived largely from studies utilizing microorganisms, and more specifically a class of microbial mutants known as conditional lethal mutants. These mutations, which allow survival in a "permissive" environment, but which are lethal under a "restrictive" set of conditions are of three main types --- auxo- trophic, nonsense, and temperature sensitive.

Intimate contact between embryonic and maternal tissues is sine qua non for uterine development in eutherian mammals, since these species shed microlecithal eggs. The stores of nutrients (i.e. yolk) are so scanty in such an egg that independent development beyond the earliest stages cannot be supported.

The cells of any given multicellular organism arise from a single fertilized egg by mitotic divisions. This implies that every cell has the same chromosomal content and thus the same genetic information. Such an assumption was verified by Gurdon (1962) who transplanted nuclei from single somatic cells of the frog into enucleated frog eggs, allowed them to develop and obtained normal adult frogs. If all cells have the same genetic information and the ability to express this information under appropriate conditions, how do cells differentiate and specialize?Mirsky (1964) observed that as much as 70-80% of the DNA of the thymus …
