A Species Comparative Study Of The Soluble Phosphoproteins Of Dentin., William Frederick Beegle
All ETDs from UAB
The soluble phosphoproteins of the dentin have been isolated from the rabbit, cow, hog, and human. The phosphoproteins were purified by means of gel filtration and anion-exchange chromatography, and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. They all showed high levels of aspartic acid, serine, and phosphate which is bound as phosphoserine. The data do not clearly suggest that a dentin phosphoprotein exists in the fish. The phosphoprotein of dentin may be a high molecular weight aggregate of greater than 150,000 daltons. The phosphoproteins purified in this study compare reasonably to the majority of the soluble and insoluble phosphoproteins isolated by other investigators. The findings of …
Secondary Negative Reinforcing Properties Of A Stimulus Associated With Suppression Of Morphine-Induced Abstinence., Danna Lee Rickert
Secondary Negative Reinforcing Properties Of A Stimulus Associated With Suppression Of Morphine-Induced Abstinence., Danna Lee Rickert
All ETDs from UAB
Contemporary theories of learning and motivation assert that stimuli which are paired with conventional reinforcers such as food and water readily acquire the properties of conditioned or "secondary†reinforcers. However, when stimuli are paired with the reduction of aversive drive states induced by the onset of noxious or painful stimuli, generally no conditioning is observed. The results of studies dealing with experimental narcotic addiction suggest that narcotic withdrawal is an aversive drive state which may prove to be an exception in terms of its ability to alter the neutrality of environmental cues associated with its reduction. Yet the nature of …

The question of what role, if any, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep plays in memory consolidation has yet to be answered. Those studies which find evidence for a functional role of REM in consolidation do so by comparing REM deprived (REMD) animals, which are subjected to cold, wetness, isolation, and fatigue, with caged controls, which are subjected to none of these.

Assessment Of State-Dependent Learning Effects Produced By Marijuana In Human Subjects., Elaine P. Campbell
All ETDs from UAB
Dissociative or state-dependent learning refers to a phenomenon characterized by a decrement in the retrieval of previously learned information when a special state present during acquisition is subsequently altered. This change in state is generally produced by a drug administered to the subject, and the decrement may range from partial to total impairment of retrieval. When the "special state" present during acquisition is reinstated, retrieval occurs as usual.

Metaphor is often employed in the formulation of new ideas. It is useful as a kind of expansion bridge which stretches between pre-existing concepts and original ideas still in the nebulous stage of formation. This is true when the theorist is creating new systems of thought and it is true when he is attempting to relate these new ways of viewing his subject to an interested audience.
Development Of The Limb In Mice Bearing The Mutant Gene: Hypodactyly (Hd)., Cynthia Ann Jackson
Development Of The Limb In Mice Bearing The Mutant Gene: Hypodactyly (Hd)., Cynthia Ann Jackson
All ETDs from UAB
The investigations reported in this thesis were concerned with the embryological development, the penetrance, and the expressivity in two strains of inbred mice of a mutant gene: Hypodactyly, whose principal manifestation is a numerical reduction of the hindlimb digits. In 1966, Hypodactyly (symbol Hd; linkage group XI) occurred spontaneously in the inbred strain MYA/Hu (Hummel, 1971). Since the strain was homozygous for another mutant gene which interfered with classification of the new mutant, Hypodactyly was transferred by outcrossing to unrelated normal animals for study of its inheritance and expression. Hypodactyly was inherited as a semi-dominant mutation with full penetrance. No maternal …
Cell Death As A Morphogenetic Basis For Abnormal Development In Mutant-Bearing And Teratogen-Treated Embryos., Frank Perron Achorn Jr
Cell Death As A Morphogenetic Basis For Abnormal Development In Mutant-Bearing And Teratogen-Treated Embryos., Frank Perron Achorn Jr
All ETDs from UAB
Cell death is known to be a widespread and essential event during the normal development of many tissues and organs (Glucksmann, 1965). Whole organs may degenerate during normal organogenesis. For example, massive necrosis is necessary for the proper formation of the excretory and urogenital duct systems in vertebrates (Saunders, 1966). Cell death also has an important role in the contouring of some organs. The sculpturing of the chick wing is related to precisely timed cell death (Saunders, Gasseling, and Saunders, 1962) as is the shaping of the digits in the mammal (Milaire, 1965).
