Comorbidities Of Skin Disease In The Homeless And Medical Students Perspectives, Matthew David Coffman
Comorbidities Of Skin Disease In The Homeless And Medical Students Perspectives, Matthew David Coffman
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The homeless population is at increased risk for skin disease. Exposure to the elements and lack of access to medical care contribute to the problem. To date there have been few studies analyzing the medical comorbidities that put homeless patients at increased risk for skin disease. The aim of this study is to discover what medical conditions are associated with skin disease to allow physicians to better screen their homeless patients for skin disease. The secondary aim of this study is to determine whether medical students are being adequately trained to recognize medical conditions associated with skin disease. Data from …
The Role Of Oxytocin In Modulating Neural Oscillations In Nulliparous Women, Xiaoyue Mona Guo
The Role Of Oxytocin In Modulating Neural Oscillations In Nulliparous Women, Xiaoyue Mona Guo
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The hormone oxytocin (OT) has been implicated in social cognition and behavior as well as in modulating important affiliative relationships such as parenting; meanwhile, intranasal OT administration is gaining popularity as a means to modulate neural activity in brain regions during experimental tasks. However, the neural mechanisms underscoring the changes associated with OT administration have yet to be fully elucidated. Using electroencephalography (EEG), this thesis project aims to further our understanding of how OT affects brain activity and response to infant cues. In a double-blind placebo controlled design, OT’s effect on resting-state neural oscillations and event-related potentials (ERPs) to face …
Identification Of Novel Therapeutic Small-Molecule Inhibitors Of Dna Double-Stranded Break Repair, Vikram Jairam
Identification Of Novel Therapeutic Small-Molecule Inhibitors Of Dna Double-Stranded Break Repair, Vikram Jairam
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Mammalian cells mainly utilize two DNA repair pathways to repair double stranded breaks (DSB): homologous recombination (HR) and non-homologous end joining (NHEJ). While HR utilizes homologous DNA sequences as a template for repair, NHEJ processes and re-ligates the ends of the breaks. NHEJ is further sub-divided into a DNA-PK-dependent canonical pathway, and alternative pathways, which are more mutagenic. These pathways are essential for cell survival after ionizing radiation, and thus have become important therapeutic targets for radiosensitization. Our group recently performed multiple high-throughput small molecule screens for novel DSB repair inhibitors. These studies identified numerous selective NHEJ and HR inhibitors, …
Association Of Tuberculosis And Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor In A South African Population, Duncan Reid Reid
Association Of Tuberculosis And Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor In A South African Population, Duncan Reid Reid
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that plays an important role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune inflammatory diseases. Functional promoter variants in the MIF gene influence host susceptibility to different infectious diseases, including tuberculosis (TB). However, the effect of functional MIF promoter variants in subjects with co-infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and TB, who comprise over 12 percent of new TB cases globally and 60 percent of new TB cases in South Africa, has been examined only in one prior study. Here, an association study was carried out in a clinically well-defined rural population in KwaZulu-Natal, …
Molecular And Genetic Properties Of Breast Cancer Associated With Local Immune Activity, Anton Safonov
Molecular And Genetic Properties Of Breast Cancer Associated With Local Immune Activity, Anton Safonov
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The causes of high versus low, or absent, immune cell infiltration in breast cancer is unknown. The goals of this analysis were to examine if total mutation load, neoantigen load, copy number variations (CNV), gene-level or pathway level somatic mutations or germline polymorphisms (SNP) are associated with the level of immune infiltration measured by immune metagene expression levels. We used RNA-Seq, DNA copy number, mutation and germline SNP data from the TCGA representing n=627 ER+, n=207 HER2+ and n=191 TNBC cancers. 13 published immune metagenes were used in correlation and multivariate linear regression analyses performed separately for the 3 major …
Wind-Driven Flow Over Topography, Michael A. Spall
Wind-Driven Flow Over Topography, Michael A. Spall
Journal of Marine Research
The space and time scales over which wind forcing can directly drive flows over regions of closed topographic contours are explored using an idealized numerical model and theory. It is shown that stratification limits the vertical scale of the mean flow but also results in an enhanced recirculation strength in shallow water by distorting the isopycnals in the bottom boundary layer. Time-dependent forcing can drive flows that extend deeper than the mean flow because the initial response is primarily barotropic. This response is limited at low frequencies by baroclinic Rossby wave propagation. It is expected that these wind-driven flows might …

Adverse Childhood Experiences And Their Relation To Parenting Stress And Parenting Practices, Brittany Lange
Adverse Childhood Experiences And Their Relation To Parenting Stress And Parenting Practices, Brittany Lange
Public Health Theses
Introduction: Trauma represents a significant public health issue that has been associated with a number of adverse physical and mental health outcomes. Additionally, parenting practices have been found to be affected by trauma. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), one conceptualization of trauma, are also associated with adverse outcomes. However, limited research has been done on ACEs and their association to parenting stress and practices. As such, this study aims to understand this relationship. Methods: Surveys (n=1985) were administered to a population of low-income, parenting women to determine community needs and eligibility for a mental health intervention. At the baseline visit, measures …

Us Foreign Policy And The Soviet-Afghan War: A Revisionist History, Julie Lowenstein
Us Foreign Policy And The Soviet-Afghan War: A Revisionist History, Julie Lowenstein
Harvey M. Applebaum ’59 Award
The dominant historical narrative surrounding US policy and actions during the Soviet-Afghan War (1979-1989) maintains that the US government launched its extensive covert operation in support of the Mujahedin (Arabic for those who wage jihad, or holy war) against the Soviet army in response to the Soviet Union’s December 25, 1979 invasion of Afghanistan.
Supposedly, according to such historical accounts, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan blindsided US officials and, in response, the US government began supporting the Mujahedin in order to defend Afghanistan’s sovereignty and religious freedom, and forestall Soviet expansion into the Middle East and South Asia. In reality, …

Species Distribution Modeling Of North American Odonates, Rebecca Beilinson
Species Distribution Modeling Of North American Odonates, Rebecca Beilinson
Library Map Prize
Species distribution modeling, which uses species-environment relationships to predict species’ geographic ranges, is a powerful technique for biogeographical and ecological analysis as well as for conservation planning. However, it has typically been underutilized for invertebrates and for freshwater species, as modeling these groups can pose unique challenges. Here I present methods for modeling odonate distributions and demonstrate these methods for four North American species. I show that incorporating expert-derived range maps as spatial priors can significantly improve model performance as compared to MaxEnt models. I also introduce a new distance to freshwater layer as an environmental variable, and show that …
