Developing The Language And Tools To Address Food Insecurity, Sarah Candace Desilvey Jan 2020

Developing The Language And Tools To Address Food Insecurity, Sarah Candace Desilvey

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

There is vast literature indicating associations of food insecurity with concerning health outcomes, and clinic and community settings now regularly partner to address food insecurity as it is assessed. However, there is scarce health terminology to use in the care of patients experiencing food insecurity. This presents challenges as clinicians seek to define food insecurity as a risk for their patients, order interventions to address it, and study the effect of interventions in individual and population settings. Furthermore, there is no published food insecurity diagnostic criteria to employ as clinicians listen to the histories of their patients and try to …

Workplace Violence Prevention In Homecare: The Homecare Measures For Employee Safety (Homes) Toolkit, Joanne Elizabeth Schmidt Jan 2020

Workplace Violence Prevention In Homecare: The Homecare Measures For Employee Safety (Homes) Toolkit, Joanne Elizabeth Schmidt

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Risk factors for the homecare worker present differently from other healthcare workers as they engage in fieldwork and their workspace changes throughout the day. Due to the nature of the changing environments and that this work is usually performed solo, the approach and management of safety must include measures and interventions pertinent to this work. This project employs a literature review, survey of homecare workers and law enforcement, and an expert panel to inform an evidence-based toolkit for workplace violence prevention in homecare. The HoMES Toolkit provides information and recommendations for organizations and staff providing homecare services to the public.

Utilizing A Mentorship Approach To Address The Underrepresentation Of African Americans And Ethnic Minorities In Senior Nursing Leadership, Dewi Vivica Brown-Deveaux

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Healthcare organizations must be intentional and purposeful in creating diversity programs. To meet this need, a nursing leader mentorship program for racial and/or ethnic minority nurse managers was introduced at a large academic medical center. The program design was based on the successful Leadership Institute for Black Nurses, first conducted at a university school of nursing. The particpants in the four-month program were 16 nurse managers from two city hospitals, and their mentors.

Procurement Of Housing In Depressed, African-American Homeless Patients In A Large Urban Federally Qualified Health Center: A Pilot To Improve Workflow Processes, Identify Best Practices And Impact Outcomes, Asa Tavares Briggs

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Homelessness is a chronic issue in the United States (US)-impacting individuals from every socio-economic class. African Americans in the US disproportionately experience rates of homelessness higher than those in the general population. These individuals are vulnerable to poor physical and chronic mental health problems, chief among them is depression. African-American homeless individuals have high rates of depression and experience disparities in utilization and access to health care. To address this problem within a healthcare systems level context, this Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) project examined the association between homelessness and depression in African-Americans. A pilot project focused on the targeted …

Nursing Workforce Development In Rural Home Health: Design Of A Nurse Fellowship Curriculum, Johanna Beliveau Jan 2020

Nursing Workforce Development In Rural Home Health: Design Of A Nurse Fellowship Curriculum, Johanna Beliveau

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

As the population of the United States ages, so does the population of registered nurses. The result of this phenomenon is an increased demand for nursing services at the same time there is a growing shortage of nurses; this is particularly true in rural home health. It is imperative that organizations develop strategies to combat the widening divide between supply and demand. One opportunity is implementation of structured transition in practice programs, such as residencies and fellowships, to attract nurses into rural home health settings. While these programs are on the rise in hospitals, there are few in rural areas …

A Pilot Program Evaluating The Acceptability And Feasibility Of A Health Care Ethics Curriculum For Critical Care Nurses, Jennifer Rebekah Rendon

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Abstract

Background: Critical care units are demanding practice settings filled with daily stressors including the ethical climate (America Association of Critical-Care Nurses 2015a; Mealer, & Moss, 2016). Navigating this ethically sensitive area requires critical care nurses have an understanding of ethics at a level appropriate for their practice setting (Bertolini, 1994; Hadjibalassi et al., 2012; Hughes & Dvorak, 1997; Indhraratana & Kaemkate, 2012; Mealer, & Moss, 2016; Rushton & Stutzer, 2015; Schluter, Winch, Holzhauser, & Henderson, 2008; Sellman, 1996). However, current ethics education for critical care nurses is limited to a general understanding of basic ethical principles (American Association of …

Enhancing The Self-Efficacy Of Nurses In The Reduction Of Potentially Avoidable Nursing Home To Hospital Transfers, Marjorie Elena Tapia Jan 2020

Enhancing The Self-Efficacy Of Nurses In The Reduction Of Potentially Avoidable Nursing Home To Hospital Transfers, Marjorie Elena Tapia

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Nursing home hospitalizations are classified as potentially avoidable when they do not improve quality of life or change the course of illness. These hospitalizations are costly, disruptive and detrimental to the quality of nursing home care. Nurses maintain the interconnection amongst the key stakeholders involved in the decision to hospitalize and are integral to the efforts employed in reducing potentially avoidable transfers. The purpose of this project is to enhance the self-efficacy of long-term care nurses with respect to reducing potentially avoidable nursing home hospitalizations, utilizing an expert validated educational module. A review of the literature on potentially avoidable nursing …

Training Pre-Licensure Nursing Students As First Responders In Clinical Emergencies, Poy Yamada Jan 2020

Training Pre-Licensure Nursing Students As First Responders In Clinical Emergencies, Poy Yamada

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

The Joint Commission requires formal education for healthcare providers who are first responders giving care to patients whose conditions are deteriorating. However, most nursing programs do not include education about the role of first responders during clinical emergencies in the pre-licensure curricula. A literature search shows positive outcomes of increased knowledge, skills competences, and confidence, and that additional education training of the role of the first responder was needed. While there are positive outcomes from the current literature, additional research is needed to further the argument that first responders training is essential in the pre-licensure nursing programs.

Racialized Masculinities In The Sexual Field: A Latent Profile Analysis Of Gay Community Stressors, Okoduwa Aboiralor

Public Health Theses

While intra-group discrimination is commonly experienced among men in the LGBT community, little is known about the intersection of multiple forms of discrimination. This study used a latent class analysis (LCA) to visualize the intersections of different forms of perceived discrimination and to evaluate to what degree LCA membership is associated with depression, anxiety, and somatization among a sample of racially and ethnically diverse men who have sex with men (MSM). The data was sourced from the Gay Community Stress Scale (GCSS) wherein participants were asked to what degree their perception of the mainstream gay community’s racism, racial objectification, masculinity …

Health Disparities Among Arab-American Immigrants For Hpv Vaccination As An Indicator Of Cervical Cancer Prevention, Nafeesa Abuwala

Public Health Theses

Background

Arab American immigrants are an understudied minority in the United States due to their invisibility under the White racial group in census data. As such, there is little health research regarding their preventative behaviors, including for cervical cancer, a preventable but fatal illness. Human papillomavirus infection (HPV), a sexually-transmitted infection which can be prevented through the administration of a 3 regimen vaccine between the ages of 9 and 26 is the primary known cause. This study assesses the relationship between region of birth and HPV vaccination.

Methods

Utilizing data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from 2016, 2017, …

Group Care has shown promise in improving patient outcomes, such as …

Screening For Legionnaires’ Disease: A Predictive Model For Improving Health And Economic Outcomes, Alyssa K. Amick Jan 2020

Screening For Legionnaires’ Disease: A Predictive Model For Improving Health And Economic Outcomes, Alyssa K. Amick

Public Health Theses

Introduction: Legionnaires’ disease (LD), caused by the Legionella bacterium, is a rare but serious atypical pneumonia that is often underdiagnosed in the clinical setting. Recent guideline changes by the American Thoracic Society limited use of the urinary Legionella tests, the primary form of diagnosis, due to the excessive costs of regular testing. Delays in testing and diagnosis of LD result in increased cost of treatment and risk of death.

Objective: To develop a predictive model to estimate a patient’s probability of having LD. This model would serve as a screen to better target diagnostic efforts, prevent misdiagnosis, and reduce the …

Methods: Using data from the National Cardiovascular Disease Registry (NCDR) - Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion …

A Literature Review Of Current Tuberculosis Prophylaxis Strategies For Plhiv In Namibia, Anumita Bajpai Jan 2020

A Literature Review Of Current Tuberculosis Prophylaxis Strategies For Plhiv In Namibia, Anumita Bajpai

Public Health Theses

INTRODUCTION: The HIV and TB co-epidemic remains a big obstacle in reducing PLHIV mortality and morbidity in Namibia. The solution to that has been the implementation of isoniazid preventative therapy (IPT) alongside ART for PLHIV to prevent the development of active tuberculosis. As newer shorter regimens of IPT (3HP) are released it is important to Namibia’s Ministry of Health to evaluate the efficacy of these newer IPT regimens prior to their implementation.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review is to compare the benefit of 3HP to that of 6-month or continuous (36-month) daily IPT for PLHIV to make future TB …

A Prospective Cohort Study To Evaluate The Efficacy Of A Peer-Led Tuberculosis Education And Counseling Intervention In Kampala, Uganda, Anna Dawn Baker Jan 2020

A Prospective Cohort Study To Evaluate The Efficacy Of A Peer-Led Tuberculosis Education And Counseling Intervention In Kampala, Uganda, Anna Dawn Baker

Public Health Theses

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and disproportionally burdens low- to middle-income countries (LMICs). Upon initiation of treatment for an active TB diagnosis, universal TB education and counseling (TEC) is recommended to promote knowledge and medication adherence. Though previous studies have shown that there are areas that can be improved when delivering routine TEC, there is limited data on how peer-led TEC can fill these gaps in Kampala, Uganda. Our study evaluated the efficacy of a peer-led TEC intervention among newly diagnosed adults initiating TB treatment in Kampala and assessed capacity for scale-up. We used …

The Effect Of The Lifestyle, Exercise, And Nutrition (Lean) Study On Alcohol Consumption Among Breast Cancer Survivors, Isabella Sofia Berglund-Brown Jan 2020

The Effect Of The Lifestyle, Exercise, And Nutrition (Lean) Study On Alcohol Consumption Among Breast Cancer Survivors, Isabella Sofia Berglund-Brown

Public Health Theses

Background: Alcohol use is an established risk factor for the development of breast cancer. Additionally, there is evidence that consuming alcohol increases the risk of breast cancer recurrence among survivors. A randomized controlled weight loss intervention called the Lifestyle, Exercise, and Nutrition (LEAN) Study resulted in clinically meaningful weight loss and improvements in aspects of diet among a population of breast cancer survivors. Since the LEAN intervention included some content related to alcohol consumption, we hypothesized that the LEAN intervention would result in a reduction in alcohol consumption at 6 months.

Methods: A total of 151 overweight and obese breast …

Experiences And Beliefs About Violence And Sexual Health: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Experiences Of Female Migrant Lao Workers At The Border Of Thailand And Laos, Rachel Michele Brase

Public Health Theses

Background: It is estimated that 10% of Thailand’s total labor force is estimated to be made up of migrant workers. While the exact number of migrant workers from nearby countries is unknown, border towns and provinces are acknowledged to utilize a large population of undocumented and documented migrant workers. A majority of undocumented and a nearly half of documented migrants were reported to be female. While previous research has explored the health needs of female migrant workers in specific industries, such as the sex work industry and manufacturing industry, few studies have examined the health needs and beliefs of female …
