Microvariation In Verbal Rather, Jim Wood Jan 2022

Microvariation In Verbal Rather, Jim Wood

Yale Working Papers in Grammatical Diversity

This paper uses survey results and interactive mapping tools to analyze correlations across different versions of the non-standard verbal use of the word rather, in particular with participial morphology, as in rathered. Across numerous possible instantiations of the construction, there appear to be in fact a quite limited number of grammars, which are generated by an implicational hierarchy of functional heads, along with the availability of a silent verb HAVE. The overall picture supports several broader conclusions. First, silent verbs can be licensed by head-moving to a modal head in the extended projection. This movement is freely available, but …

Presynaptic Plasticity In A Mammalian Synapse Involves Actin Remodeling And Vesicle Recruitment, Shobana Subramanian Jan 2022

Presynaptic Plasticity In A Mammalian Synapse Involves Actin Remodeling And Vesicle Recruitment, Shobana Subramanian

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Short term synaptic plasticity is required for working memory and executive functions, which become impaired in neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia. A form of short-term plasticity that can be induced by repeated stimulation of neurons is called post-tetanic potentiation (PTP). One way in which PTP occurs is through an increase in the number of vesicles at the active zone, the specialized region of the presynaptic terminal where synaptic transmission occurs. The calyx of Held is a large, rapidly firing synapse located in the auditory brainstem that is involved in sound localization. We have previously shown that the dense layer of …

Constructing Colma, Ethan Treiman Jan 2022

Constructing Colma, Ethan Treiman

Library Map Prize

The American Cemetery Movement tells the story of American cemeteries in roughly four chapters, demarcated by the emergence of new cemetery forms: the rural cemetery, the memorial park, and so on. This paper identifies the salient features associated with each epoch of cemetery development and locates them within the city-cemetery of Colma, California — America’s only official necropolis — to demonstrate how Colma extends America’s cemetery tradition in familiar ways. In Colma, the trends of cemetery growth and ‘flattening’ reached their natural conclusions, throwing the uncertain future of earthen burial in America into the spotlight. This paper analyzes the societal, …

“A Cascade Of Shifts In The Brain”: Kay Ryan’S Poetics, Sarah Gannett Jan 2022

“A Cascade Of Shifts In The Brain”: Kay Ryan’S Poetics, Sarah Gannett

Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections

In 2015, Kay Ryan wrote in her private journal that “I don’t feel that my poems have really been enjoyed yet, although they have been rewarded” (May 3, 2015 6:29 AM). This essay uses Ryan’s papers, acquired by the Beinecke Library in 2018, to develop an understanding of the poetics of this much-rewarded, but underappreciated two-term poet laureate, MacArthur fellow, and Pulitzer Prize winner. This essay is the first to use Ryan’s archives to analyze her poetic work.

Two poles of the Beinecke’s Kay Ryan Papers ground my discussion: her self-published 1983 debut collection, Dragon Acts to Dragon Ends, …

A Nurse-Driven Protocol To Increase Metabolic Screening And Interventions For Inpatients On Antipsychotic Medications, James Thomas Demarco Jan 2022

A Nurse-Driven Protocol To Increase Metabolic Screening And Interventions For Inpatients On Antipsychotic Medications, James Thomas Demarco

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Patients on antipsychotic medications are at higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome; nevertheless, metabolic screening for patients on antipsychotics is suboptimal. This project implemented a nurse-driven protocol on inpatient psychiatric units to increase metabolic screening compliance rates. The literature on improving metabolic screening as well as the clinical use of nurse-driven protocols were used to develop a protocol. The initial implementation of the protocol showed no change in screening rate; however, when the protocol was updated to include nursing leader involvement, metabolic screening increased. Nurses’ perception of the nurse-driven protocol was examined and found a negative perception and no change …

Educational Program For Caregivers Of Children With Tympanostomy Tube Otorrhea: Impact On Caregiver Self-Efficacy And Clinical Outcomes, Wendy Lord Mackey Jan 2022

Educational Program For Caregivers Of Children With Tympanostomy Tube Otorrhea: Impact On Caregiver Self-Efficacy And Clinical Outcomes, Wendy Lord Mackey

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

There is an overuse of oral antibiotics and acute care visits conducted to treat children with uncomplicated tympanostomy tube otorrhea (TTO), a condition easily identified by the child’s caregiver who can then independently initiate treatment with ototopical antibiotic drops (TAD). Yet, some caregivers seek urgent medical attention for children with TTO, which often results in mismanagement of the condition including the administration of oral antibiotics. This quality improvement initiative involved the development and implementation of an educational program for caregivers of children with tympanostomy tubes (TT). Resources for caregivers included a web-based instructional video, informational pocket-card, and a post-operative text …

Implementation Of A Medication Adherence Protocol In A Large Urban Safety Net Hospital, Carlie Martinez Jan 2022

Implementation Of A Medication Adherence Protocol In A Large Urban Safety Net Hospital, Carlie Martinez

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Medication nonadherence has a deleterious effect on patients with chronic health conditions, as it contributes to poorer health outcomes and increased healthcare spending. This Doctor of Nursing Practice project sought to improve medication adherence in at-risk patients by enhancing patient-provider communication and improving health literacy in a large, urban, safety net hospital. Utilizing a multi-prong approach, patients were provided with a visual aid – a pill card, in conjunction with the teach-back method, to improve systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DPB) and Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) over a 6-month period. Twenty-three patients participated in the project. Participant demographics, attitudes …

Using Telemedicine To Optimize The Delivery Of Care In Patients With Liver Disease, Samantha Ramirez Jan 2022

Using Telemedicine To Optimize The Delivery Of Care In Patients With Liver Disease, Samantha Ramirez

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Chronic Liver Disease (CLD) is one of the top causes of morbidity and mortality globally. Among the spectrum of liver diseases, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is the most common cause of cirrhosis and one of the top reasons for a liver transplant. Patients with NASH end up with hepatic decompensation and liver-related complications such as malnutrition, sarcopenia, frailty, and death. Telemedicine has transformed health care by improving access, reducing cost, and increasing the quality of care. However, telemedicine has not been widely used to manage patients with CLD. This DNP project created a telemedicine protocol to manage patients with NASH, implemented …

Reducing Unnecessary Primary Cesarean Sections: A Quality Improvement Project, Jennifer L. Suess Jan 2022

Reducing Unnecessary Primary Cesarean Sections: A Quality Improvement Project, Jennifer L. Suess

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Background: The cesarean section (CS) is the most common surgical procedure in the United States and while often necessary and life-saving, brings higher risk of morbidity and mortality for both patient and neonate than vaginal birth (Boyle et al., 2013; Lagrew et al., 2018). CS rates in nulliparous, term, singleton, vertex (NTSV) patients vary dramatically, from 7.1% to 69.9%, throughout US birthing facilities but can be safely reduced via the implementation of evidence-based safety bundles that aim to reduce variation in care (Council on Patient Safety in Women’s Health Care, 2020; Kozhimannil et al., 2013). Local Problem: A large birthing …

Implementing A Peer And Mentor Transition Support Program For New Graduate Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, Christina Maroone Jan 2022

Implementing A Peer And Mentor Transition Support Program For New Graduate Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, Christina Maroone

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

New graduate Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) face challenges during the transition to practice that can lead to emotional distress and decreased productivity. To address this issue, a New Graduate PMHNP Transition Program was developed to provide mentorship, peer support, and education during the transitional period. This program aimed to improve role clarity, prevent burnout, and improve self-confidence for new graduate PMHNPs. The program consisted of individual mentorship, peer support groups, and educational modules relevant to the new graduate transition PMHNP to practice. The program was implemented with twenty new graduate PMHNPs, who reviewed the curriculum on transition to …

Retention Of The Newly Licensed Registered Nursing Workforce Post-Coronavirus (Covid-19): Establishing A Trauma-Informed Wellness Program, The Registered Nurse Residency Script For The Future (Rnrx) (© Maryellen Hope Kosturko, 2022), Maryellen Hope Kosturko Jan 2022

Retention Of The Newly Licensed Registered Nursing Workforce Post-Coronavirus (Covid-19): Establishing A Trauma-Informed Wellness Program, The Registered Nurse Residency Script For The Future (Rnrx) (© Maryellen Hope Kosturko, 2022), Maryellen Hope Kosturko

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Retention of newly licensed registered nurses (NLRNs) is crucial to the future success of a thriving nursing workforce. It is well-established that most NLRNs experience stress as they transition from school to work environments leading some to leave the workforce or nursing altogether within their first two years post-graduation. The novel Coronavirus virus (Covid-19) pandemic exacerbated this problem as NLRNs experienced increased stress, fear, exhaustion, uncertainty, and dissatisfaction, further threatening the future of the nursing workforce. The aim of this project was to develop and implement a trauma-informed wellness program in an acute care inpatient hospital, The Registered Nurse Residency …

An Index Of Community Priorities To Inform Local Governance In New Haven, Max E. Teirstein Jan 2022

An Index Of Community Priorities To Inform Local Governance In New Haven, Max E. Teirstein

Library Map Prize

Environmental justice screening and mapping tools visually depict the distribution of environmental justice burden across a geographic area. How that burden is measured varies according to location—different communities face different challenges, and a mapping tool that represents the landscape of environmental justice in one community may not adequately capture the distribution of EJ burden in another area. Who decides what “burden” means for each community? In this study of environmental justice in New Haven, CT, I argue that it is residents and local community leaders whose perspectives are most critical to how environmental justice is defined. I create a census …
