Understanding Charge Transport Control In Water Splitting Dye-Sensitized Photoelectrochemical Cells, Jacob Alan Spies

Understanding the dynamics of the charge transfer processes that underlie the operation of solar energy conversion devices is crucial for the development of next generation materials. This dissertation focuses on materials used for photoelectrochemical water splitting, namely the water splitting dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cell (WS-DSPEC). In a prototypical WS-DSPEC, water oxidation is driven at a photoanode and proton reduction occurs concurrently at a dark cathode to form hydrogen, a reduced chemical fuel. WS-DSPECs accomplish visible light-driven water-splitting by functionalizing wide bandgap semiconductors (i.e., metal oxides) with visible light harvesting dyes and catalysts. Embryonic definitive hematopoiesis generates hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) essential for the establishment and maintenance of the adult blood system. This process requires the specification of a subset of vascular endothelial cells to become blood-forming, or hemogenic, and the subsequent endothelial-to-hematopoietic transition (EHT) to generate HSPCs therefrom. The mechanisms that regulate these processes are under intensive investigation, as their recapitulation in vitro from human pluripotent stem cells has the potential to generate autologous HSPCs for clinical applications. In these studies, we identified microRNA-223 (miR-223) as a novel negative regulator of hemogenic endothelial cell (EC) specification and HSPC production. We …

The term ‘odorant-binding proteins (Obps)’ is used to refer to a large family of insect proteins that are exceptional in their number, abundance and diversity. The name derives from the expression of many family members in the olfactory system of insects and their ability to bind odorants in vitro. However, an increasing body of evidence reveals a much broader role for this family of proteins. Recent results also provoke interesting questions about their mechanisms of action, both within and outside the olfactory system. Gallium Nitride (GaN) has a great potential in high-power and high-frequency applications due to its wide energy gap and good transport property. GaN-based high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) have been deployed for microwave power amplification for both commercial and military applications. Atypical variations in social cognitive processing of gaze are symptomatic features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that may indicate aberrant joint attention mechanisms. Despite this well-known phenomenon, neural processing of gaze in ASD in real-life social interactions remains limited. This knowledge gap may be due to the limitations of conventional neuroimaging methods that require participants to be still in a confined space with significant environmental noise, potentially eliciting anxiety and discomfort. The Micro Booster Neutrino Experiment (MicroBooNE) is a leading large-scale Liquid Argon Time Project Chamber (LArTPC) experiment, designed for precision neutrino physics. The main scientific objectives of MicroBooNE include the investigation of the Low Energy Excess (LEE) observed by the MiniBooNE Experiment between 2002-2019 in the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at Fermilab, the measurements of neutrino-argon interactions, and the research and development of LArTPC technology. This dissertation examines the relationship between interstate private credit and domestic public finance in early modern England and the Ottoman Empire. During the 1690s, both the English and Ottoman states developed new institutions for longer-term borrowing and reformed their imperial monetary systems. These synchronized but divergent financial developments present a puzzle that has not been answered by rigidly separate English and Ottoman historiographies. Empires of Obligation follows merchants between England and the Ottoman Empire to understand how both states responded differently to the challenges of global trade and fiscal crisis due to alternative arrangements of debt, power, and empire. Traumatic orthopaedic injuries (TOIs), musculoskeletal injuries that result from physical trauma, affect millions of Americans, and cost more than cancer, diabetes, or heart disease annually. Post-injury symptoms of anxiety, depression, pain, sleep disturbance, and stressor-related disorders are common and associated with negative long-term outcomes. Individuals rarely experience a single symptom, but often experience them in clusters of 2 or more co-occurring symptoms. Symptom clusters can be phenotypically characterized by symptom cluster profiles that describe the common ways a group experiences a set of symptoms. Belief Convergence Under Misspecified Learning: A Martingale Approach, Mira Frick, Ryota Iijima, Yuhta Ishii

We present an approach to analyze learning outcomes in a broad class of misspecified environments, spanning both single-agent and social learning. We introduce a novel “prediction accuracy” order over subjective models, and observe that this makes it possible to partially restore standard martingale convergence arguments that apply under correctly specified learning. Based on this, we derive general conditions to determine when beliefs in a given environment converge to some long-run belief either locally or globally (i.e., from some or all initial beliefs).
