The proper ties of free unattenuated long waves of small amplitude that travel parallel to the coast over a bottom topography consisting of a gently sloping shelf of finite width that drops off vertically to deep water of constant depth are investigated.

No doubt the peripheral discharge around Antarctica tends to establish a westward coastal fl. ow and may slow the Antarctic Circumpolar Current significantly, as suggested by Barcilon (1966, 1967). It should be noted that this effect would have strong seasonal variations. Virtually all of the discharge is accomplished from midsummer to late summer....

The simplest problem in the formation of an inertial stratified western-boundary current on a continental shelf is examined by numerical treatment of the three-dimensional conservation equations. An offshore countercurrent appears as the predominant feature of the flow.

During June 1966, nine velocity measurements were made with neutrally buoyant floats at a depth of about 2500 m along a section crossing the Gulf Stream near 38° N, 69°W. In combination with hydrographic stations bracketing each float trajectory, these measurements yielded a volume transport of 101 × 106 m3/sec for the Stream as of that time and location

Instrument Far Measuring Terrestrial Heat Flow Through The Ocean Floor, Charles Corry, Carl Dubois, Victor Vacquier

Terrestrial heat flow through the ocean floor is determined by measuring the temperature gradient and thermal conductivity in the upper few meters of sediment with an instrument lowered on hydrographic wire. The chief novel feature of the device is that the thermal conductivity is measured in situ simultaneously with the temperature gradient instead of in a cored specimen of sediment in the laboratory.

Studies At Oyster Bay In Jamaica, West Indies. Iii. Measurements Of Underwater-Sunlight Spectra, H. H. Seliger, W. G. Fastie

Journal of Marine Research

Spectral distributions of ambient underwater sunlight in Oyster Bay, Falmouth Harbor, Jamaica, West Indies, have been measured during the diurnal rise in the stimulable bioluminescent intensity of the marine dinoflagellate, Pyrodinium bahamense. In addition to the changes in light intensity during this period, there are large changes in the relative spectral distributions, as functions of both time and depth in the Bay. The blue-to-red intensity ratios vary by factors of 10 to 100.

Autospectra of observed particle motions in ocean waves are presented. The spectra show the dominant peaks associated with the frequencies of the visually observed waves. Examination of the autospectra relative to depth reveals a strong attenuation of spectral energy, particularly at the higher frequencies; the peaks associated with the waves tend to redden the deeper the wave motions are observed....

Electrochemical Standardization Of The Dehydrogenase Assay Used In The Estimation Of Respiration Rates, Theodore T. Packard, Michael L. Healy

Journal of Marine Research

A primary coulometric titration is proposed as a standardization technique for the succinate dehydrogenase assay used in the estimation of respiration rates in marine plankton. The coulometric method, which is shown to be simple, accurate, and reproducible, eliminates the difficulties of using a chemical reducing agent. An alternative method using polarography is also discussed.
