A Diapsid (Reptilia) Parietal From The Lower Permian Of Oklahoma, Robert L. Carroll

A single isolated parietal bone from the Fort Sill deposit of Oklahoma is described. It has a well-developed upper temporal opening, resembling that of the primitive South African diapsids. The parietal is compared with that of Araeoscelis and Youngopsis. Based on comparison with this parietal and the configuration of the rear skull table of millerosaurs and romeriids, the bone usually identified as tabular in younginids is designated the supratemporal. The Fort Sill parietal may belong to a form structurally, if not phylogenetically, intermediate between primitive captorhinomorphs and eosuchians.

The Lower Jaw Of Cynodonts (Reptilia, Therapsida) And The Evolutionary Origin Of Mammal-Like Adductor Jaw Musculature, Herbert R. Barghusen

The evolution of the feeding apparatus is described from Dimetrodon (a primitive mammal-like reptile representing a pre-therapsid stage of evolution) through theriodont therapsids (moderately and fully advanced carnivorous mammal-like reptiles from which mammals were ultimately derived). Osteological changes are analyzed in terms of modifications in the adductor jaw musculature. In Dimetrodon, very primitive theriodonts, and therocephalians, adductor jaw musculature did not descend beneath the zygomatic arch to insert over the lateral surface of the lower jaw. With the exception of M. pterygoideus, the jaw musculature in these animals was confined within the temporal fossa where part of this muscle mass …

The Anatomy And Systematic Position Of The Antpipits Conopophaga And Corythopis, Peter L. Ames, Mary A. Heimerdinger, Stuart L. Warter

The anatomical characters of the passerine family Conopophagidae have been reexamined. The sternum, syrinx, tarsus, antorbital osteology and pterylosis of Conopophaga and Corythopis were compared with a broad sample of other suboscines, with particular attention to the Formicariidae and Rhinocryptidae. Conopophaga was found to lie well within the range of variation of the Formicariidae in the principal characters (sternum and syrinx) used by Forbes in describing the Conopophagidae. The key character was the apparent presence in Conopophaga of a four-notched sternum. In nearly all specimens of Conopophaga, however, we found the sternum to have two notches and two large medial …
