Models Of The Distribution Of 210pb In A Section Across The North Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, Derek W. Spencer, Michael P. Bacon, Peter G. Brewer Jan 1981

Models Of The Distribution Of 210pb In A Section Across The North Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, Derek W. Spencer, Michael P. Bacon, Peter G. Brewer

Journal of Marine Research

The deficiency of 210Pb relative to 226Ra in the world's deep ocean is well documented, and the overall residence time of 210Pb bas been calculated to be about 15-100 years. It has been assumed, generally, that the removal mechanism is one of in situ adsorption on settling particles, but Bacon et al. (1976) suggested that a boundary scavenging process with diffusive and advective fluxes of 210Pb from the interior ocean may be a significant factor....

Baroclinic Transport In The Gulf Of Alaska Part I. Seasonal Variations Of The Alaska Current, Thomas C. Royer Jan 1981

Baroclinic Transport In The Gulf Of Alaska Part I. Seasonal Variations Of The Alaska Current, Thomas C. Royer

Journal of Marine Research

Temperature and salinity sections which intersect the Alaska Current are used to determine the baroclinic, geostropbic current on 21 occasions from 1975 to 1977. A sinusoidal curve-fitting technique is applied to these Alaska Current estimates and others available in the literature to statistically test the flow for an annual signal....

The Antarctic Influence On Antarctic Intermediate Water, Eugene J. Molinelli Jan 1981

The Antarctic Influence On Antarctic Intermediate Water, Eugene J. Molinelli

Journal of Marine Research

lsopycnal geostrophic flow is postulated within the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. The major consequence of this is that a strong source (at least 3 × 106m3sec-1) of water with Antarctic Intermediate Water densities (σ0 = 27.2 to 27.3) and cold, fresh Antarctic Zone characteristics must occur in the southeast Pacific Ocean. This is consistent with the formation of isohaline thermoclines in the Subantarctic Zone of the southeast Pacific....

Light Inhibition Of Nitrification In Sea-Surface Films, S. G. Horrigan, A. F. Carlucci, P. M. Williams Jan 1981

Light Inhibition Of Nitrification In Sea-Surface Films, S. G. Horrigan, A. F. Carlucci, P. M. Williams

Journal of Marine Research

Nitrifying bacteria (ammonia- and nitrite-oxidizers) were isolated from sea-surface films collected in the Gulf of California. Laboratory studies indicate substrate oxidation by these isolates is inhibited by light. Ammonia-oxidizers showed lower nitrifying activity and a longer lag time when held in an 8-hr light:16-hr dark regime compared to those held completely in the dark, and nitrite-oxidizers showed nitrifying activity only when held in the dark. Tracer studies using 15N-ammonia corroborate that little or no nitrification occurs in the surface films of subtropical seas.

Characteristic Functions And The Tail Behavior Of Probability Distributions, Peter C.B. Phillips Dec 1980

Characteristic Functions And The Tail Behavior Of Probability Distributions, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The theory of Fourier transforms of generalized functions is used to extract general formulas for the tail behavior of a probability distribution from the behavior of its characteristic function in the locality of the origin. The theory is applied to develop asymptotic formula for the tails of the stable distributions.

A Market Value Approach To Approximate Equilibria, Robert M. Anderson Dec 1980

A Market Value Approach To Approximate Equilibria, Robert M. Anderson

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We consider the market value of excess demand as a measure of disequilibrium. We show that, in a fixed exchange economy, there exist approximate equilibria whose measures of disequilibrium depend only on the endowments and not on the preferences. A related bound on the norm of excess demand, depending on the endowments and the approximate equilibrium price, is also obtained. We show the existence of allocations which are nearly competitive, as measured by the largest proportion of demand given up at the allocation by any trader. We use these results to obtain, for very general sequences of exchange economies, allocations …

Housing Market With Indivisibility, Mamoru Kaneko Dec 1980

Housing Market With Indivisibility, Mamoru Kaneko

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In this paper we present a model of rental housing market in which houses are treated as indivisible commodities. We provide a recursive equation which determines a competitive equilibrium and argue that we can regard the competitive equilibrium as a representative of the set of all competitive equilibria. Using this representative equilibrium, we provide several propositions on comparative statics, that is, we consider how the competitive rents change when certain parameters of the model change.

Taxonomic Status Of Eohyus Marsh, 1894, Spencer G. Lucas Nov 1980

Taxonomic Status Of Eohyus Marsh, 1894, Spencer G. Lucas

Postilla

In 1977 Marsh mentioned Eohyus as the oldest known artiodactyl but failed to describe or illustrate a type specimen, and thus Eohyus was for many years anomen nudum. The validity of its two species, E. distans and E. robustus, both named by Marsh in 1894, has been the subject of numerous and often conflicting opinions. Reexamination of the type specimens reveals that E. distans is a subjective synonym of Phenacodus primaevus Cope, 1873, and E. robustus is a subjective synonym of Periptychus carinidens Cope, 1881. The type of E. distans is from early Eocene (Wasatchian) age strata of the San …

A Geologic And Biostratigraphic Framework For Miocene Sediments Near Khaur Village, Northern Pakistan, John C. Barry, Anna K. Behrensmeyer, Marc Monaghan Nov 1980

A Geologic And Biostratigraphic Framework For Miocene Sediments Near Khaur Village, Northern Pakistan, John C. Barry, Anna K. Behrensmeyer, Marc Monaghan

Postilla

A litho- and chronostratigraphic framework for approximately 3500 m of late Miocene sedimentary deposits with lateral exposure of 30-40 km is now well established for Siwalik deposits in the vicinity of Khaur Village, northern Pakistan. Based on paleomagnetic reversal stratigraphy and the constraints of long range faunal correlations, the time spanned is between 15-12 and 6 my BP. Boundaries of the major lithostratigraphic units are time-transgressive with respect to a paleomagnetic isochron traced laterally for 20-30 km. With reference to this datum, the zone of interfingering of the Dhok Pathan and Nagri Formations moves upward through approximately 1.5 my from …
