A Note On Sverdrup Balance In The Southern Ocean, D. James Baker Jr. Jan 1982

A Note On Sverdrup Balance In The Southern Ocean, D. James Baker Jr.

Journal of Marine Research

Three sets of recent data from the Southern Ocean, on mass transport through the Drake Passage (Whitworth et al., 1982), on surface winds (Jenne et al., 1971; Han and Lee, 1981) and on density (Gordon et al., 1978) allow an instructive look at the dynamics of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. These new data suggest that the simple Sverdrup balance of wind stress curl driving a poleward flow south of about 50S as first proposed by Stommel (1957) is consistent with the observed transport within experimental uncertainties....

Observations Of A Barotropic Planetary Wave In The Western North Atlantic, James F. Price, H. Thomas Rossby Jan 1982

Observations Of A Barotropic Planetary Wave In The Western North Atlantic, James F. Price, H. Thomas Rossby

Journal of Marine Research

SOFAR float observations from 1300 m depth are used to describe a major feature of the large-scale, subthermocline velocity field observed in the western North Atlantic (31 N, 70W), during the 1978 POLYMODE Local Dynamics Experiment (LDE). The two-month-long intensive phase of the LDE was dominated by a highly polarized, oscillatory flow which had many of the characteristics of a barotropic planetary wave....

A Theory Of Wind-Driven Circulation. I. Mid-Ocean Gyres, Peter B. Rhines, William R. Young Jan 1982

A Theory Of Wind-Driven Circulation. I. Mid-Ocean Gyres, Peter B. Rhines, William R. Young

Journal of Marine Research

A theory of the wind-driven ocean circulation is presented in which the key feature is strong deformation of interior density layers and consequent production of closed geostrophic-contours by the flow itself. The constraint imposed on the subsurface flow by the imposition of a no flux condition where a geostrophic contour strikes a coastal boundary is thus removed. Within regions where the geostrophic contours close the potential vorticity is uniform....

The Influence Of The Meandering Guiana Current On Surface Conditions Near Barbados - Temporal Variations Of Trichodesmium (Cyanophyta) And Other Plankton, Gary A. Borstad Jan 1982

The Influence Of The Meandering Guiana Current On Surface Conditions Near Barbados - Temporal Variations Of Trichodesmium (Cyanophyta) And Other Plankton, Gary A. Borstad

Journal of Marine Research

The temporal fluctuations of the surface layer Trichodesmium (Cyanophyta) populations off Barbados which occur at roughly three-month intervals are shown to be accompanied by in-phase fluctuations of both the numbers and species composition of other phytoplankton and surface dwelling zooplankton....

Seasonal Variation In Meridional Overturning And Poleward Heat Transport In The Atlantic And Pacific Oceans: A Model Study, Kirk Bryan Jan 1982

Seasonal Variation In Meridional Overturning And Poleward Heat Transport In The Atlantic And Pacific Oceans: A Model Study, Kirk Bryan

Journal of Marine Research

Numerical solutions for a model of the World Ocean are analyzed to illustrate the important changes in the meridional circulation of the ocean induced by seasonal changes in wind stress. Seasonal variations of meridional circulation and associated changes in poleward heat transport predicted by the model are most important in the Pacific where the background thermohaline circulation is relatively weak....

A Preliminary Comparison Of Selected Numerical Eddy-Resolving General Circulation Experiments With Observations, William J. Schmitz Jr., William R. Holland

Journal of Marine Research

Results from several numerical experiments based on one class of eddy-resolving gyre-scale models have been compared kinematically with observations. The model oceans are forced by a simplified steady wind stress distribution in basins with idealized coastlines and bottom topography....

How Fast Should We Graze The Global Commons?, William D. Nordhaus Jan 1982

How Fast Should We Graze The Global Commons?, William D. Nordhaus

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Unlike the vast preponderance of planets, earth has been bequeathed a hospitable environment in which to thrive. Up to now, man’s activities have affected this environment negligibly. Scientists are becoming convinced, however, that release of carbon dioxide (CO2) from combustion of fossil fuels will lead to a significant modification of the global climate (see Woodwell). How should we think about such a destruction of our heritage? Should it be treated as anathema, like bondage? Or should the pace and extent of use of our global commons be subject to the same reasoned balancing of costs and benefits as other economic …

A New Species Of Conoryctella (Mammalia: Taeniodonta) From The Paleocene Of The San Juan Basin, New Mexico, And A Revision Of The Genus, Robert M. Schoch, Spencer G. Lucas Dec 1981

A New Species Of Conoryctella (Mammalia: Taeniodonta) From The Paleocene Of The San Juan Basin, New Mexico, And A Revision Of The Genus, Robert M. Schoch, Spencer G. Lucas

Postilla

Specimens from Paleocene strata of the Nacimiento Formation in Kutz Canyon, San Juan Basin, New Mexico, add to our knowledge of the poorly known taeniodont genus Conoryctella Gazin, 1939 and provide evidence for its taxonomic revision. C. dragonensis Gazin, 1939 is only known with certainty from its type specimen from the Dragon local fauna, North Horn Formation in east-central Utah, although a poorly preserved maxillary fragment and canine of uncertain provenance from the San Juan Basin, New Mexico, may pertain to this taxon. C. pattersoni, new species, differs from C. dragonensis in its smaller size, less molariform P4 and relatively …

The Epsilon Core Of A Large Game, Myrna Holtz Wooders Dec 1981

The Epsilon Core Of A Large Game, Myrna Holtz Wooders

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Sufficient conditions are given for large replica games without side payments to have non-empty approximate cores for all sufficiently large replications. No “balancedness” assumptions are required. The conditions are superadditivity, a very weak boundedness condition, and convexity of the payoff sets. An example is provided to show that under these conditions, the (exact) core well may be empty.

Some Remarks On The Folk Theorem In Game Theory, Mamoru Kaneko Oct 1981

Some Remarks On The Folk Theorem In Game Theory, Mamoru Kaneko

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

It is argued that although the pathological multiplicity of Nash equilibria of super games stated by the folk theorem can be removed by introducing limited observations into super games with a continuum of players, the consideration of super games in terms of the Nash equilibrium concept involves a more fundamental and conceptual difficulty.

A New Approach To Small Sample Theory, Peter C.B. Phillips Oct 1981

A New Approach To Small Sample Theory, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

It is argued that an integral part of the process by which the results of small sample theory can be transmitted to the applied econometrician will in the future be played by reliable direct approximation to the sampling and posterior distributions that are of interest in the precise setting of the model and the data set with which the investigator is working. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new technique of approximating distributions which is sufficiently general to be widely used and is developed in very general terms and should be widely applicable in mathematical statistics and …

Marginal Densities Of Instrumental Variable Estimators In The General Single Equation Case, Peter C.B. Phillips Oct 1981

Marginal Densities Of Instrumental Variable Estimators In The General Single Equation Case, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A method of extracting marginal density approximations using the multivariate version of the Laplace formula is given and applied to instrumental variable estimators. Some leading exact distributions are derived for the general single equation case which lead to computable formulae and generalize all known results for marginal densities. These results are related to earlier work by Basmann (1963), Kabe (1964) and Phillips (1980b). Some general issues bearing on the current development of small sample theory and its application in empirical work are discussed in the introduction to the paper.

A New Genus And Species Of Sphaeromatidae (Crustacea: Isopoda) With Experiments And Observations On Its Reproductive Biology, Interspecific Interactions And Color Polymorphisms, Leo W. Buss, Ernest W. Iverson Sep 1981

A New Genus And Species Of Sphaeromatidae (Crustacea: Isopoda) With Experiments And Observations On Its Reproductive Biology, Interspecific Interactions And Color Polymorphisms, Leo W. Buss, Ernest W. Iverson

Postilla

The new genus, Paraleptosphaeroma, is distinguished from the morphologically similar genus Leptosphaeroma by the fusion of the pleonites, the shape of the peni, the attachment of appendix masculina, and the presence or the absence of an endopod on the first pleopod. The term cingula is introduced to refer to lateral margins fringed with setae and the distinction is drawn between setal and membranous forms of the cingula. Paraleptsphaeroma glynni (sp nov.) occurs on cobble in tidal pools and is associated with three sessile species, two bryozoans and a coralline alga. Experiments demonstrate the isopod to be a sequential hermaphrodite with …
