The Employment Effects Of Mobile Internet In Developing Countries, Gaurav Chiplunkar, Pinelopi K. Goldberg
Discussion Papers
We examine the employment effects of 3G mobile internet expansion in developing countries. We find that 3G significantly increases the labor force participation rate of women and the employment rates of both men and women. Our results suggest that 3G affects the type of jobs and there is a distinct gender dimension to these effects. Men transition away from unpaid agricultural work into operating small agricultural enterprises, while women take more unpaid jobs, especially in agriculture, and operate more small businesses in all sectors. Both men and women are more likely to work in wage jobs in the service sector.

This paper studies a linear panel data model with interactive fixed effects wherein regressors, factors and idiosyncratic error terms are all stationary but with potential long memory. The setup involves a new factor model formulation for which weakly dependent regressors, factors and innovations are embedded as a special case. Standard methods based on principal component decomposition and least squares estimation, as in Bai (2009), are found to suffer bias correction failure because the order of magnitude of the bias is determined in a complex manner by the memory parameters. A heteroskedasticity-autocorrelation robust (HAR) test statistic is proposed to test for the presence of explosive roots in financial or real asset prices when the equation errors are strongly dependent. Limit theory for the test statistic is developed and extended to heteroskedastic models. The new test has stable size properties unlike conventional test statistics that typically lead to size distortion and inconsistency in the presence of strongly dependent equation errors. The new procedure can be used to consistently time-stamp the origination and termination of an explosive episode under similar conditions of long memory errors. This paper studies the response of agricultural production to rural labor loss during the process of urbanization. Using household microdata from India and exogenous variation in migration induced by urban income shocks interacted with distance to cities, we document sharp declines in crop production among migrant-sending households residing near cities. Households with migration opportunities do not substitute agricultural labour with capital, nor do they adopt new agricultural machinery. Instead, they divest from agriculture altogether and cultivate less land. We use a two-sector general equilibrium model with crop and land markets to trace the ensuing spatial reorganization of agriculture. Other non-migrant …

Spinoza believes that everything has an explanation. He also is committed to the ideal of aunified science, which joins natural and speculative philosophy. That said, no thorough account of Spinozistic explanation exists. In the first part of my dissertation, I formulate such an account. I argue that for Spinoza, a scientific explanation is a causal narrative which links explanans and explanandum according to laws of nature, involves their essences, and situates the explanandum against some contrast class. The dissertation traces a longer and broader history of computing in the People's Republic of China between the 1940s and the 1990s. The introduction addresses the core issues of writing a critical history of Chinese computing. The first chapter starts with the rise of cybernetics systems engineering in the PRC in the work of Qian Xuesen, which, due to Qian's unusual career path, connected some of the common themes in other chapters. The second chapter presents a long history of early Chinese programming languages and software and analyzes a hidden software development and maintenance crisis that fundamentally shaped the development …

This dissertation is a study on the motivations and practices of willful Black participation in capitalism in the contemporary moment. With two sites of inquiry, Wall Street in New York City and Accra, Ghana, this ethnographic study examines how, and to what effect Black Capitalists successfully navigate financial institutions shaped by structural racism and covert inequality. I also track and assess the afterlives of Black professionals who leave Wall Street with an entrepreneurial posture as they sojourn across the Atlantic to create financial institutions of their own in Ghana. Research on biogeochemical cycles has historically focused on plant and microbial activity; however, growing evidence suggests that animals play an important role in nutrient cycling. Predators may be especially important drivers of these ecosystem processes, as they influence the quantity, quality, and distribution of organic matter through their control of herbivore prey. The role of predators and their herbivore prey in cycling and transporting nutrients may be particularly important in arid ecosystems, where productivity is low and resources are scarce and spatially clustered. The relationship between RNA structure and function has challenged generations of scientists trying to unravel the ways that RNA functions in health and disease. RNA is known to adopt elaborate 2-D and 3-D folds that extend their regulatory possibilities way beyond those enabled by their primary sequence. The discovery, more than a decade ago, that most of our genome is pervasively transcribed has largely expanded the repertoire of known structured RNAs and their modes of action. The dynamic life cycle of an RNA begins with transcription initiation and concludes when the mature transcript is degraded to monomer nucleotides. The early steps of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) transcription, initiation and promoter-proximal pausing in metazoans, are the most complex and tightly orchestrated steps. To synthesize a single mature transcript,dozens of individual proteins must be assembled around a promoter to initiate transcription. In a reliable fashion, the initiated polymerase is halted only 20 to 60 base pairs downstream of the transcription start site (TSS) in a phenomenon called promoter-proximal pausing. Silicon is the second most abundant element in Earth’s crust and yet its seawater concentrations are far below saturation for any silicate mineral due to the activity of silicifiers, or organisms that make their shells, tests or spicules out of amorphous silica. On geologic timescales, the marine silica cycle is inextricably tied to the carbon cycle and global climate via the silicate weathering feedback and other pathways, and the concentration of silica in the ocean can vary the strength of these feedbacks. Silicifiers, primarily consisting of sponges, diatoms (phytoplankton) and radiolarians (zooplankton), are in turn affected by silica availability, and …

The Right Stuff: Material Culture, Comfort, And The Making Of Explorers, 1820-1940, Sarah Mendoza Pickman

This is a dissertation about unpacking packing. It uses the things that British and American explorers packed for their journeys as a lens for understanding how ideas of comfort shaped Anglophone exploration, colonialism, and capitalism in the long nineteenth century. It starts with a group of seemingly mundane objects that were ubiquitous in the packing lists of these explorers, like chocolate, raincoats, and tents. Tracing these objects from raw material to consumer commodity, the dissertation argues that explorers made these items essential for their comfort in “extreme” environments. In doing so, they naturalized concepts of physical and psychological comfort that …
