Measuring The Impact Of Global Warming In Agriculture, Robert Mendelsohn, William D. Nordhaus, Daigee Shaw Apr 1993

Measuring The Impact Of Global Warming In Agriculture, Robert Mendelsohn, William D. Nordhaus, Daigee Shaw

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper develops a “Ricardian” approach for measuring the economic impact of environmental factors such as climate by examining the direct impact of the environmental factor on land prices. Estimating the model using cross-sectional data on climate, farm-land prices, and other economic and geophysical data for almost 3,000 countries in the United States, we find that higher temperatures in all seasons except autumn reduce average farm values in the United States and more precipitation in all seasons except autumn increases farm values. Applying the model to a global-warming scenario finds a range of impacts depending upon whether the model emphasize …

Hypothesis Testing With A Restricted Parameter Space, Donald W.K. Andrews Apr 1993

Hypothesis Testing With A Restricted Parameter Space, Donald W.K. Andrews

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper considers hypothesis tests for nonlinear econometric models when the parameter space is restricted under the alternative hypothesis. Multivariate one-sided tests are a leading example. Optimal tests, called directed tests, are derived using a weighted average power criterion. The likelihood ratio test is shown to be admissible and to maximize power against alternatives that are arbitrarily distant from the null hypothesis. Exact results are established first for Gaussian linear regression models with known variance. Asymptotic analogues are then established for dynamic nonlinear models. Simulation is used to compare the tests discussed in the paper. The D–W ∞ directed test …

Behavioral Heterogeneity And Cournot Oligopoly Equilibrium, Jean-Michel Grandmont Mar 1993

Behavioral Heterogeneity And Cournot Oligopoly Equilibrium, Jean-Michel Grandmont

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

It is not infrequent to see studies of imperfect competition or of industrial organization rest upon questionable foundations such as the hypothesis that inverse market demand is, whenever it is positive, concave or even linear. Assumptions of this sort are not robust (i.e., “additive”) in the sense that they are not usually preserved through aggregation of different sectors that would satisfy them individually. The present paper investigates an alternative specification that is based upon the plausible existence of significant heterogeneities among demanders. It is demonstrated that specific forms of demand heterogeneity tend to stabilize market expenditures. In a partial equilibrium …

Adaptive Estimation In Arch Models, Oliver B. Linton Mar 1993

Adaptive Estimation In Arch Models, Oliver B. Linton

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We construct efficient estimators of the identifiable parameters in a regression model when the errors follow a stationary parametric ARCH(P) process. We do not assume a functional form for the conditional density of the errors, but do require that it be symmetric about zero. The estimators of the mean parameters are adaptive in the sense of Bickel [2]. The ARCH parameters are not jointly identifiable with the error density. We consider a reparameterization of the variance process and show that the identifiable parameters of this process are adaptively estimable.

An Old Keynesian Counterattacks, James Tobin Mar 1993

An Old Keynesian Counterattacks, James Tobin

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Both New Classical and New Keynesian macroeconomic theorists misunderstand and distort old Keynesian economics, alleging that its diagnoses and prescriptions depend on the indefensible assumption that money wages and prices are “rigid.” Here it is argued that all Keynesian macro requires is that labor and product markets are not instantaneously and continuously cleared by perfectly flexible prices. Assuming imperfect flexibility, not necessarily rigidity, suffices to open the door for involuntary unemployment. Moreover, once the economy is displaced from full employment, it is far from clear that economy-wide movements of money wages and prices will, in the absence of Keynesian demand …

A Strategic Market Game With Seigniorage Costs Of Fiat Money, Martin Shubik, Dimitrios P. Tsomocos Mar 1993

A Strategic Market Game With Seigniorage Costs Of Fiat Money, Martin Shubik, Dimitrios P. Tsomocos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A model that includes the cost of producing money is presented and the nature of the inefficient equilibria in the model are examined. It is suggested that if one acknowledges that transactions are a form of production, which requires the consumption resources, then the concept of Pareto optimality is inappropriate for assessing efficiency. Instead it becomes necessary to provide an appropriate comparative analysis of alternative transactions mechanisms in the appropriate context.

The North Atlantic Circulation: Combining Simplified Dynamics With Hydrographic Data, Philip S. Bogden, Russ E. Davis, Rick Salmon Jan 1993

The North Atlantic Circulation: Combining Simplified Dynamics With Hydrographic Data, Philip S. Bogden, Russ E. Davis, Rick Salmon

Journal of Marine Research

We estimate the time-averaged velocity field in the North Atlantic from observations of density, wind stress and bottom topography. The flow is assumed geostrophic, with prescribed Ekman pumping at the surface, and no normal component at the bottom. These data and dynamics determine velocity to within an arbitrary function of (Coriolis parameter)/(ocean depth), which we call the “dynamical free mode.” The free mode is selected to minimize mixing of potential density at mid-depth. This tracer-conservation criterion serves as a relatively weak constraint on the calculation. Estimates of vertical velocity are particularly sensitive to variations in the free mode and to …

Rates And Possible Mechanism Of Light-Dependent Degradation Of Pigments In Detritus Derived From Phytoplankton, James R. Nelson Jan 1993

Rates And Possible Mechanism Of Light-Dependent Degradation Of Pigments In Detritus Derived From Phytoplankton, James R. Nelson

Journal of Marine Research

Rates of degradation of phytoplankton chlorophylls and carotenoids under visible light exposure were determined in laboratory experiments. Killed phytoplankton cells and copepod fecal pellets were used as sources of pigments. Chlorophylls, pheopigments and carotenoids were analyzed by HPLC. Experiments included aerated and N2 bubbled treatments (light and dark), and in one experiment, killed phytoplankton cells were aged in darkness for 5 days in the presence of an active bacterial population prior to exposure to light. Pigment bleaching in solution was also examined. Pigment degradation was light- and oxygen-dependent and showed apparent first-order kinetics with respect to light exposure. The …

The Annual Variation Of Water Mass Structure In The Gulf Of Maine: 1986-1987, W. S. Brown, J. D. Irish Jan 1993

The Annual Variation Of Water Mass Structure In The Gulf Of Maine: 1986-1987, W. S. Brown, J. D. Irish

Journal of Marine Research

The annual variation in the structure and disposition of the principal water masses in the Gulf of Maine has been investigated with a set of water property observations using five shipboard surveys and four moored arrays with data telemetry. The time series observations document the cooling-induced destratification of the upper water column during autumn and the subsequent mixed-layer deepening in the western Gulf—primarily in Wilkinson Basin— during winter 1987. Unusually large amounts of fresher Scotian Shelf Water inflow inhibited winter 1987 vertical mixing in the eastern Gulf relative to the deep mixing in and around Wilkinson Basin in the western …

The Importance Of The Scotia Sea On The Outflow Of Weddell Sea Deep Water, Ricardo A. Locarnini, Thomas Whitworth Iii, Worth D. Nowlin Jr. Jan 1993

The Importance Of The Scotia Sea On The Outflow Of Weddell Sea Deep Water, Ricardo A. Locarnini, Thomas Whitworth Iii, Worth D. Nowlin Jr.

Journal of Marine Research

Weddell Sea Deep Water influences the thermohaline circulation of the world ocean directly as a component of the deep western boundary current in the South Atlantic Ocean and indirectly by cooling and freshening Circumpolar Deep Water. Because it is filled with recently ventilated Weddell Sea Deep Water, the Scotia Sea is important to both influences. The main component of the abyssal waters renewing most of the world oceans via deep boundary currents is the Circumpolar Deep Water of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Weddell Sea Deep Water is recognized as the main source of cold, fresh waters to Circumpolar Deep Water, …

On The Role Of Large Bubbles In Air-Sea Gas Exchange And Supersaturation In The Ocean, Ralph F. Keeling Jan 1993

On The Role Of Large Bubbles In Air-Sea Gas Exchange And Supersaturation In The Ocean, Ralph F. Keeling

Journal of Marine Research

A parameterization of bubble-induced gas exchange is presented in which the bubble contribution to gas exchange is expressed in terms of separate transfer velocities for ingassing (Kbin) and outgassing (Kbout). The difference between the ingassing and outgassing velocities (Kbin − Kbout) is further separated into two components, the first caused by the injection of small bubbles into the water, the second caused by gas exchange across the surface of hydrostatically compressed larger bubbles. It is argued that both Kbout and the exchange contribution to …

The Ecology Of Larger Microzooplankton In The Weddell-Scotia Confluence Area: Horizontal And Vertical Distribution Patterns, Viviana A. Alder, Demetrio Boltovskoy Jan 1993

The Ecology Of Larger Microzooplankton In The Weddell-Scotia Confluence Area: Horizontal And Vertical Distribution Patterns, Viviana A. Alder, Demetrio Boltovskoy

Journal of Marine Research

The distribution of microzooplankton > 15 μm (large dinoflagellates, foraminifers, radiolarians, tintinnids, microcrustaceans and various invertebrate larvae) was studied in samples retrieved from 10 to 400 m in two overlapping transects along 49W, between 57S and 61°30′S (27 Nov.–12 Dec. 1988, and 27 Dec. 1988–4 Jan. 1989). Dinoflagellates and tintinnids concentrated at 50–90 m (10–400 m weighted averages, dinoflagellates: 103 ind./I, 131 mg C/m2; tintinnids: 9.7 ind./I, 53 mg C/m2). Copepod nauplii had a more variable vertical pattern with maximum numbers at 100–200 m (10–400 m av.: 2.6 ind./I, 27 mg C/m2). Foraminifers and radiolarians …

Benthic Fluxes And Nitrogen Cycling In Sediments Of The Continental Margin Of The Eastern North Pacific, Allan H. Devol, John P. Christensen Jan 1993

Benthic Fluxes And Nitrogen Cycling In Sediments Of The Continental Margin Of The Eastern North Pacific, Allan H. Devol, John P. Christensen

Journal of Marine Research

The exchange of O2, N2, NO3−, NH4+, Si(OH)4, and PO4−3 between the sediments and the overlying water (benthic flux) was determined at 18 locations on the Washington State continental margin using an in situ benthic tripod. Oxygen consumption by the sediments ranged from 21.2 pmole cm−2 s−1 on the shelf to 2.85 pmole cm−2 s−1 on the slope. Nitrogen gas fluxes were from the sediments to the overlying water. They varied 5.5 to 1.2 pmole-N cm−2 s−1 …
