"Causes And Consequences Of State Violence Against Civilians: The Rohingya Of Myanmar", C. Austin Davis, Paula Lopez, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak, Jaya Y. Wen

While the United Nations describes Myanmar’s oppression of the Rohingya as “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing” (UN, 2017), the state maintains that the violence was idiosyncratic and not motivated by anti-Rohingya animus. We assemble existing and original large-sample data to evaluate these claims. First, we document systematic economic motives: violence against minority civilians increased in places suitable for rice cultivation when rice prices were high. Correspondingly, in an original representative survey of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh we find substantial losses of agricultural land, inputs, and inventories. Although the need to address problematic language in “Library of Congress Subject Authority Headings” (LCSH) has appeared in library literature for over 50 years, it has gained momentum in recent years due to significant language and societal changes. This presentation covers the diverse approaches that librarians and institutions have taken to tackle this problem and describes a large-scale remediation project to change the LCSH for "Slaves" to "Enslaved persons". The Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee’s “A Code of Ethics for Catalogers” emphasizes the need to keep the end-user in mind and to describe materials without bias or discrimination. I posit that …

How should a seller offer quantity or quality differentiated products if they have no information about the distribution of demand? We consider a seller who cares about the "profit guarantee" of a pricing rule, that is, the minimum ratio of expected profits to expected social surplus for any distribution of demand.

We show that the profit guarantee is maximized by setting the price markup over cost equal to the elasticity of the cost function. We provide profit guarantees (and associated mechanisms) that the seller can achieve across all possible demand distributions. With a constant elasticity cost function, constant markup pricing …

In 2021, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Data Library and Archives (DLA), a part of the MBLWHOI (Marine Biological Laboratory Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) Library, received a grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) Recordings at Risk (RAR) program to catalog, digitize, preserve, and make available historic films and videos of Alvin, the first-of-its-kind manned submersible vessel that has shown us more of the deep ocean than had ever been possible and transformed our understanding of life on Earth.

This paper studies stochastic hysteresis − general dependence on the path of past decisions and shocks. We develop a new methodology for deriving the explicit dynamics of optimal policy with path-dependence and show that stochastic hysteresis changes optimal policy both qualitatively and quantitatively. We showcase our methodology by deriving new results for optimal policy with stochastic habits, tipping points, robustness concerns, limited commitment, and dynamic private information.

Opioid use disorder refers to the maladaptive use of prescribed or illicit opioids. This condition can be treated using pharmacotherapy referred to as medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), but they are underutilized. Opioid use disorder is more prevalent among people living with HIV (PLH), highlighting a target population for interventions to increase treatment. Patient decision aids have been successful in affecting decision-making in other populations. However, no decision aid for medication for opioid use disorder has been utilized among patients with comorbid HIV and OUD. Olfaction impairment is one of the earliest nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Olfaction disorders in patients with Parkinson’s disease can range from hyposmia, a reduction in smell ability, to anosmia, a complete loss of smell. Regardless of severity, olfaction loss can result in decreased well-being and mood disorders. However, there is no approved management for anosmia or hyposmia secondary to Parkinson’s disease. Insulin is hypothesized to modulate olfactory neuron regeneration in patients with post-infectious hyposmia, but its effects have not been studied in Parkinson’s patients. Bariatric surgeries are the most effective treatment for severe obesity. However, despite the benefits, patients who undergo bariatric surgery, especially Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, are at a higher risk of developing alcohol use disorders compared to the general population. There is currently limited research that evaluates interventions to decrease unhealthy alcohol use in at-risk bariatric patients. This study aims to investigate whether an intervention strategy known as Brief Intervention can reduce alcohol consumption in Roux-en-Y patients who screen positive for at-risk alcohol use. The proportion of infertile women who fail to become pregnant after an embryo transfer remains high despite advances in assisted reproductive technologies. Use of autologous platelet-rich plasma may have a beneficial effect on implantation.
