Recent uses to which tide records have been put have exposed limitations of the nonlinear tide well with an orifice. By replacing the orifice with a long horizontal pipe connection, the system becomes essentially linear and the limitations of the conventional system no longer apply. The analysis in this paper shows that unsteady effects in the pipe flow produce the main features of the frequency response of the system; the hydrodynamic filtering of waves due to the depth of the pipe connection and the effect of the inertia of the water in the well are relatively unimportant....

Recent studies of the non-linear response of the conventional tide-well system have pointed out the deficiencies of the system when the tide records are to be used for scientific purposes requiring very accurate data. An experimental method of checking the response of such tidewells, by means of a drainage test, is described. This provides the basis of a further method, by which the height of the water level in the well may be approximately corrected to give the height of the sea level outside the well. The decline in benthic marine fauna following an oil spill in West Falmouth, Massachusetts, permitted us to follow the responses of a number of polychaete and other invertebrate species to an environmental disturbance. Species with the most opportunistic life histories increased and declined at the two stations with the greatest reduction in species diversity. The stations with an intermediate reduction in diversity showed increases and declines of somewhat less opportunistic species....

Surface temperature and salinity maps from measurements during the period of maximum coastal upwelling in the Arabian Sea are given. The region of coldest, temperature < 14°C, and freshest, salinity < 35.15‰, surface water off Ras Mabber (9°N Somali coast) shifted northeastward during a ten-day period. Off the Arabian coast the upwelled water was not as cold (minimum, 18°C) or fresh (minimum, 35.7‰) and was found between 16°N and 20°N.

[From the Discussion] In summary, we have shown that prostaglandin E1, when injected in the rabbit knee produces synovitis and cartilage matrix degradation. The finding that salicylate cannot prevent this degeneration whereas chloroquine can, is most likely due to their different mechanisms of action in this system. Whereas chloroquine's ability to stabilize membranes is protective int his experiment, salicylate's ability to prevent the biosynthesis of prostaglandins is by passed and therefore is not.

A New Oligocene Hyrax From The Jebel El Qatrani Formation, Fayum, Egypt, Grant E. Meyer

A fossil hyrax from the Upper Fossil Wood Zone, Jebel el Qatrani formation is described. It represents a new genus and species Thyrohyrax domorictus. The type specimen as well as two referred specimens exhibit an internal mandibular fenestra whereas four referred mandibular fragments do not. One nearly complete mandible with an internal mandibular fenestra has extremely inflated horizontal rami which enclose swollen ovoid chambers opening at the fenestra. This inflated ramus, which is believed to be unique among all mammals, and the internal mandibular fenestra are thought to be sexual characters. Mature larvae of the tribe Asidini are characterized by an unsclerotized body, dorsally concave mandibles with preapical gibbosity and submarginal setose area, granulate cranium, swollen preepipleurum, and huge granulate forelegs with contiguous coxae surrounded by an enlarged sternellum. The pygidial terminus is rounded in Philolithus densicollis (Horn) and bifurcate in Stenomorpha puncticollis (LeConte). First-instar larvae lack granules on cranium and forelegs, have 2 setae on the labrum, possess egg bursters, and are very similar in both species. Eggs are large, averaging 2.5 mm in length in P. densicollis and 3.1 mm in S. puncticollis. Pupae are not known. The two …

Thirteen species of coral-dwelling sponges are reported from the reefs of Discovery Bay on the north coast of Jamaica. Seven of these are new species: Cliona delitrix, C. peponaca, C. langae, C. laticavicola, C. aprica (family Clionidae); Alectona jamaicensis (family uncertain); and Siphonodictyon brevitubulatum (family Adociidae). Two other species, Cliona schmidti and C. janitrix, are new records for the West Indies. A shallow-water and a deep-water form of two new species are described. Consequently, numerous methods and medicaments have been employed to this end over the course of medical history. [From the Summary] Reactions of cellular hypersensitivity often involve the participation of different cell types. The communication between lymphocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocytes was investigated. Human sensitized lymphocytes exposed to old tuberculin were found to have a stimulatory effect of polymorphonuclear leukocytes as indicated by the latter's increased glucose-1-14c oxidation and lysozyme production. Similar results were obtained using lymphocytes non-specifically stimulated by phytohemagglutinin. Activation of lymphocytes required a latent period (24 hour) followed by rapid stimulation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (2 ours). These results suggest that increased glucose-1-14c oxidation and lysozyme production may be related to enhanced microbicidal activity. A possible mechanism …

Beecher's Trilobite Bed in the Frankfort Shale of New York State preserves an exceptional record of the benthic macrofauna of a Late Ordovician deepwater marine environment. It has long been famous for specimens of the trilobites Triarthrus eatoni (Hall), Cryptolithus bellulus (Ulrich), Primaspis crosotus (Locke), and Cornuproetus beecheri (Ruedemann), new combination, which preserve the ventral appendages and even traces of the musculature. This fossil assemblage was accumulated when benthic animals and associated detritus were caught up and buried by a turbidity flow. Prionodactylus differs from Euspondylus in having a double row of widened gular scales and keeled hexagonal scales; it is therefore removed from synonymy with Euspondylus. Five species (P. vertebralis, P. dicrus new species, P. manicatus, P. argulus, and P. eigenmanni) are recognized. P. dicrus is related to P. vertebralis; in both, the loreal is separated from the supralabials, the subdigital lamellae are not tuberculate, and the frontonasal is not divided; P. dicrus differs in having two dorsolateral light stripes anteriorly that fuse to one posteriorly, rather than a single median light line throughout. P. vertebralis is known from Pacific Ecuador …
